Hamburger King is one of those classic Oklahoma gems that just hits you with nostalgia the moment you walk in. The 50's-style diner setup is awesome, but the real fun is picking up the phone at your table to place your order. You don't see that anymore--and I absolutely loved it! We arrived just past the lunch rush, so things were nice and relaxed. I walked in thinking I'd order a burger... but the Chicken Fried Steak called my name, and I'm glad it did. Perfect portion size--not one of those giant plate-hogs--and served with mashed potatoes and cole slaw. The cole slaw deserves its own shoutout: rough-cut cabbage, creamy mayo dressing, and served cold just the way I like it. Everything on the plate was delicious. My wife went with the Chili Cheese Burger and potato wedges, and she gave it a big thumbs-up. And since it's a diner, I had to finish with a slice of Coconut Cream Pie. Let's just say--mission accomplished. Creamy, flavorful, and exactly what I was hoping for. Have been coming here since I was a kid with my dad. Love this place. The food is always delicious and fresh. They make the best burgers around in my opinion. Love the old school diner feeling and ordering by phone at your table. You can also watch them cook your order fresh from your table. The atmosphere is always welcoming and warm. I was in this afternoon, May 27th, to get me a late lunch/early dinner and as I was trying to enjoy my food I heard some voices being raised and I saw and heard a cook start yelling and cussing at another worker.. This worker looked like maybe a waiter and looked around maybe 16-17 years old. I am not sure what initiated this to happen in the first place, but I do know that it was very uncalled for and very inappropriate, not only for a work place, but just being a decent human being. This grown man (the cook) was yelling and cursing at this young man. This young man looked startled and upset. I heard the young man try to apologize, but the cook kept going anyways. It seems like this is an occurring situation with this cook because it seemed to not faze the other employees too much as it took a minute for someone to get over to the cook that was yelling at the poor kid to just get the cook to stop and walk away. Me and my family will never support this business again, this supposedly "family" business. Not until I know that cook is no longer working there. And I will be telling others about this. So sad my heart aches for the kid. read more

Nice old fashioned hamburgers. Simple but good. Several people order the chicken fry , I noticed. Service is really good. Our waitress was really pretty and nice. They all seemed clean and nice. Some smaller towns have questionable workers. I watched as they sprayed and cleaned tables. Floor could use a sweep but I bet they had been busy for a Saturday. I ordered a single burger with grilled onions. So mustard, lettuce, tomato, pickles is the norm. You can add bacon. The grilled onions are little chopped ones , ok, but I like the long stringy ones browned. Lettuce is chopped also. The basket comes with like potato slices. Really good. Husband ordered a double patty one with onion rings. All tasted good. Just don't pass up pie! We shared coconut! Yum! We passed on the pumpkin or pecan, because my understanding they don't make those. Chocolate and banana has a strange name and think it's the favorite. One more detail is the Dr Pepper is so good there. I know sounds funny but some places the syrup is weak. Love to try the chili or other things on menu too. The current owners apparently should not be running a restaurant. Worst service I've ever had at a restaurant and the iced tea tastes like it was made in a septic tank. The cook is more worried about cleaning the grill than cooking food. He cleaned it 3 times in the 30 minutes that I waited for him to not cook my food. For me to ever go back it would need new owners and an entirely new staff. Oh and entirely new decor. That place is depressing. And I'm very surprised that the health inspector hasn't shut them down. read more

First off, I looove the small town charm and old-time character of this place. And the people here are great. These alone are worth the trip. Classic double cheeseburger is pretty good -- not great, just pretty good. This burger is wide. Patties are thin, preformed, seared on their giant griddle which imparts some flavor, but they need more s&p. And while not exactly dry, they aren't juicy either. The American cheese is plentiful and melty. Complimentary grilled diced onions were few but made an impact, so be sure to request them. But iceberg lettuce was in giant clumps that wanna fall off. And tomato a ways from garden fresh. Bun smashed down and held together nicely for the entire meal. Total was $10 along with some below average fries (their famous potato wedges are gone due to supply chain issues). I didn't add bacon since it's kinda pricey right now. Service is great here -- fast, helpful and friendly. The kiddos had a blast phoning in our order. We were surprised how many patrons were already dining early evening on a Saturday. Sign says they often get a line out the door. But is it a line-out-the-door quality burger? Hmm, that's debatable. There are other options on the menu that the locals in the know were eating, like $3.50 slices of delicious looking pie (banana cream loooaded with banana slices!) I decided to try this place today since I had to go to Shawnee. I was craving a good old fashioned cheeseburger. I came in probably close to 12:30, but managed to find a seat pretty quickly. It had such a charming diner vibe to it. I was really admiring the color scheme and the pattern on the booth. I thought it was absolutely adorable that they had the telephone-style ordering system. We perused the menu, then picked up the phone to order our meal. Our order was taken efficiently. Our food arrived in a timely manner, despite how busy the place was. My burger didn't disappoint. It was exactly like the diner burgers of my youth. I also got a side of potato wedges. They were absolute perfection! The service was excellent and the staff were all so friendly. I went with a friend and some of their family and was not impressed. First impressions are everything and this was not a good first impression. One of the waitresses is absolutely unsanitary and does not practice safe food handling. Sad to pass on a bad review but if I am paying money to eat out I want to know my food is being served in a safe manor and not by someone who digs through other customers uneaten food like a homeless person. The atmosphere is what we were looking for expecting something of a blast from the past. It's a quaint hamburger diner in downtown. The staff was great and the ordering process was unique. We had potato wedges; they were terrific. The entree was a "kicker" burger. Bacon, lettuce, tomato, dill pickles, mustard, jalapeños, and pepper jack cheese. The downside: they should upgrade their all beef patties. I'm not sure who the supplier is but they aren't great. The burger as a whole is very good. read more

I may not be able to return to Shawnee after this review. I tend to call 'em as I see 'em (or taste 'em, if you will). Hamburger King is obviously beloved. As you might imagine from any place making burgers since 1927, there is a lot of nostalgia here. And nostalgic it is. I ordered the cheeseburger with wedges combo and a slice of monkey tail pie. Using the phones at the table reminded me of a similar set up at Ballard's Drive-In in my hometown of Pauls Valley. The burger was instantly recognizable as the exact same thing I grew up on in the 1970s. It's the burger I would have been served at Dairy Twist, Tel-Star, Barton's Drug, Ballard's or anywhere else: a thin beef patty with mayo or mustard, a slice of cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion on an untoasted bun. Now, there was nothing wrong with the burger at Hamburger King. It was fresh and cooked right, but like seeing the Harlem Globetrotters as an adult, the memory of a nostalgia burger was tastier than what was on the plate. On the plus side, the potato wedges were nice and crispy. I had to force myself to stop eating them to save room for the pie. Monkey pie is essentially the marriage of a banana cream and a French silk pie. It looked to me like the crust was homemade, with banana slices lining the bottom with a banana pudding filling, then a light chocolate pudding, finished off with a whipped topping. It was decent, but nothing to make you detour off the highway to revisit. So if you want to know what a burger tasted like when your parents were teenagers, this is the place. read more

My family went to here for lunch Saturday and while the food that was being served looked good we quickly lost our appetite when we saw an older waitress with a braid that was digging through people's uneaten food on their plates. She kept putting the food under a counter for some reason and never washed her hands. She would just go up and start handling other food that she was serving. I even saw her dig through a big bin of food on a roll cart then grab a pie and take it to someone. Never washing her hands!!!! We witnessed this several times while we were in there and they were very busy so we had some time to sit and observe. She wasn't our waitress thankfully. This is absolutely disgusting. The other 2 staff they had were excellent but we won't be back. That woman is going to make someone very ill. Touching people's food that has been chewed on off of their plates is bad enough but then to carry on with your job from serving food to getting people's drinks and pies and not practicing basic handwashing is unacceptable. read more

Cute place and great service! You order on a phone at your table - a server brings it to you and checks on you often. My cheeseburger was solid but the grilled onions could've been cooked more and the finely chopped lettuce tends to fall out of the burger. The tomatoes weren't great quality (not their fault) so I would leave them off next time. I think I would just opt for mustard/pickle/onion! I enjoyed the potato wedges but would like to try the onion rings next visit. Another plus to this joint is they have PIE! Truly a local's favorite! You have to fall into the classification of one of two types of people when you eat here, those that have never picked up a phone on the wall inside a restaurant to order their food and those that have, but it was a long, long time ago. It is an old time burger dive that puts out the classic hamburger and fries. I recommend the "The Kicker" and potato wedges (hold the Miracle Whip "please!"). We ordered the onion rings too, they were good, but I liked the crispy coated potato wedges better. There is nothing fancy here, no gourmet specialty whatever burgers, just good honest hamburgers that has kept this restaurant in business since 1927. I understand why the local continue to vote this little place a one of the top places to eat in Shawnee! Oh! Their pies seem to be a big favorite too. I am not sure where folks were stuffing them after the hamburger and fries, but there were a bunch of slices of chocolate pie being delivered to the diners tables! read more

This is really a 4.5 star review but I can't quite get to 5. Had lunch at Hamburger King on a Thursday right at noon. It was busy the entire time but never full, so there was not a wait. I sat at the counter and was immediately served by a very friendly waitress. The staff was excellent, everyone I came in contact with was very nice. Refills were quick as well. I went with their special the "Kicker," which is a cheeseburger with pepperjack and jalapenos. I added grilled onions and bacon. This was a very strong burger, right in the vein of what I prefer. It had thinner patties which get the slightly crispy edges. The veggies were just standard iceberg lettuce and onions (I got both grilled and raw) and they were finely cut. I prefer the finely diced veggies to gigantic pieces of onion or lettuce on the burger. I could have used more heat to be honest, I was expecting it to be hotter. That said, it was a fantastic burger. I wanted to get the tots but they were out, so I went with cheese fries. They left them under the salamander too long to melt the cheese, so in some spots it had gone from melty to hard. This is the reason for the ding on the stars. The majority of the fries were good but some were too tough. They were HOT though, clearly fresh. I had a piece of monkey pie (or something like that, can't recall the exact name) which was basically a chocolate cream pie with bananas. It was good but I probably would have liked a strawberry pie more. This is the kind of place I wish we had more of. I was told the place has been open almost a century, and I can see why. The burger was really strong, I would absolutely get it again. It's not fancy and they're not reinventing the wheel, but they can make really good burgers. Highly recommended. read more

I was checking my activity on Yelp and saw that my review for Hamburger King was in the draft folder. Funny, because before that when I was at Hamburger King a week ago I noticed I had no review of this wonderful eatery. I plan my road trips to include a meal stop here. The unique thing is that you order on antique phones at your table. I've had a variety of meals here over the years. The catfish dinner is one favorite. The Hamburgers are good too. They keep the place clean and the servers and cashier's are friendly. I first learned about Hamburger King from my deceased wife. She attended school in Shawnee so we visited Shawnee and Hamburger King on our honeymoon as and road trips. I still go there to honor memory. If you're driving through Oklahoma on I 40 and near Shawnee I recommend you pull over and stop in. It's worth the sidetrip. read more

Visited here on 6/26/24 for a late lunch. Our family has been coming to eat here for over a decade. Quaint little place to eat, nothing fancy here but the food & service are both good. You place your order on the phone at your table & they bring your food out shortly. The ham sandwich basket which came with potato wedges are good. The day my sister & I ate lunch, we split the chocolate pie which was really good & more than enough for 2 people to share. If you're in Shawnee, stop in for a visit & don't forget to bring the kids/grandkids so they too can see how to order on an old fashioned telephone at the table :) read more

I ordered a cheese burger basket with potato wedges and a slice of fruit salad pie. The hamburger was good. The patty was thin but standard dinner fare. It was un remarkable but decent. The potato wedges were pleasantly fluffy but had a coating that plaid and detracted from the quality and taste. Overall I would say a decent but unremarkable offering. The fruit salad pie was worth ordering. The filling had a good balance in consistency and sweetness. They used fresh fruit in the thin but pleasant filing. Stopped in to this cute little diner in Shawnee Oklahoma last weekend. I loved everything about the food and service! Had the cheeseburger and it sure was really really good. Then got the potato wedges and man were they 100% perfect! Nice and crispy cut on the outside and nice not dried out middle! Then got an order of hush puppies and they were delicious!! I've wanted some good hush puppies and these hit the spot! I will be back in the far out future. Things to note: no masks worn by anyone. They did have the normal call in phones at each booth used to call in your order were covered by masks so people didn't use them. Normal circumstances I would have walked out as I want to ensure when I venture out people preparing my food wear masks these days but I took a chance.
