Oh My Goodness!!!!!! What a great burger this place makes!!!!! Traveling back to Utah from the Oregon Coast we decided to stay overnight in Pendleton, Oregon. Decided we wanted something quick and uncomplicated. Was driving by Hal's Burgers and seen the "Drive-Up Windows" had numerous Costumers lined up and figured it must be good if they're that busy. I ordered the Jumbo Bacon Cheeseburger, Onion Rings and a Strawberry Shake. I can't even begin to tell you how delicious EVERYTHING was. Burger was cooked perfectly and made exactly the way I like my burger. Onion Rings were crunchy and sweet. The shake was great. If your driving through Pendleton I strongly suggest that you plan getting something from Hal's. My plans are to stop here every chance I get. Almost ready to plan a vacation to Pendleton just to try all the other Menu Items. Great Great Burgers. read more

Ever driven from Boise to Portland??? Not much between the two, except miles and miles of sagebrush and lava rock... oh, and of course Hal's Hamburgers. On my most recent return trip to Boise, I found myself with empty tanks while near Pendleton, Oregon. After stopping for gasoline, I turned on the trusty ol' Yelp app and checked the nearby function for a suitable dining locale... search 'drive thru'. Up popped Hal's Hamburgers. Just what I was looking for, the classic American story... you know, the 'burger shack located on the old highway that runs though town and they used to get tons of business before the interstate re-routed traffic' story... that's Hal's Hamburgers. Been here for decades, and now, thanks in part to Yelp, will probably be here for decades to come! After getting our burgers, fries and shakes (which, by the way, were all well worthy of their "Yay! I'm a fan" rating) we were back on the interstate barreling down the road toward Boise. Moral of the story... next time you're near Pendleton, get off the interstate, take the 'old highway' through town, and stop at Hal's Hamburgers for a classic American burger, done right! read more

Their shakes are excellent. The wait staff have always been great to us. I have previously recommended the place to friends, but will not do so going forward, and will never spend a dime of my own money there again. On 5/24/14, we stopped by for lunch. I ordered an avocado and bacon burger, add the cheese for a little extra cost. My wife's cheeseburger was exactly as she ordered it. I opened mine to find only bacon. Not to worry, I thought! I'll just take it back and politely ask them to add the cheese and avocado since that's what we paid for. "Excuse me, ma'am?" "What's the problem?" "I ordered an avocado bacon burger, add cheese, and there's only bacon. I was wondering if I could get the cheese and avocado?" "I gave you avocado," the older lady standing over the grill says. She sounded so incredibly sure of herself that I inspected my burger again. "Well, no, I'm sorry, but there isn't any on my burger, and no cheese." "Then it must be on your wife's burger!" she snapped. Now, I've seen thirty-nine winters come and go without EVER returning anything to a restaurant kitchen until now. I'm not a picky guy. My order can be too cold, too hot, a bit under or over done, I'm just really not that particular. As such, you can be sure that I asked the wife to check her burger for the errant avocado before I even bothered to walk my burger back to the counter to explain that I would like the two items that I paid for but hadn't received. "No, we checked her burger, she got what she ordered. No avocado." "Well, one of you got it!" By this time, she had snatched up my burger, tossed the hamburger patty back onto the grill with a slice of cheese, and angrily fished around for a couple of slices of avocado to throw onto my bun. "I know you got it!" "Are you calling me a liar?" "Yes I am!" Well folks, there is no point in arguing with crazy, and there's no excuse for such poor customer service. It's hard to accurately rate a place that provided many fond memories from my childhood. We lived somewhat close by (by rural Pendleton standards) and would walk here after catching frogs from the pond under the nearby bridge to get flavored cokes: Vanilla, chocolate and cherry made with syrup instead of the new commercial products. A drive-thru with soda fountains, greasy burgers, shakes, soft server iceam: Americana still stands here. This place really is a local icon, so if you find yourself in town (Hell, I don't know why you'd end up here other than to visit family, the Round-Up or just passing through), be sure to stop by for the experience. I ordered: Jumbo Bacom Cheeseburger $5.75 Onion Rings $3.40 Large Huckleberry/White Chocolate Milkshake $3.15 The pricing isn't to bad, its actually quite affordable for the large amount of food they serve. My onion rings were cooked just right, they were delicious especially with the fry sauce that was so good! My husband had ordered a hot dog with everything, he gave me half of that because he got full from his fries and Jumbo Bacon Cheeseburger. The hot dog was wonderful, with the sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles with cheese it was the best hot dog I had ever eaten, the bread they used was soft and flavorful it mingled well with everything else, it was positively delicious. My huckleberry/white chocolate milkshake was awesome just the right amount of flavors to not be over powering, I am glad I got a large and not the quart I don't think I could have finished that much :-) I ate only a small amount of my jumbo bacon cheeseburger because I had gotten so full from everything else, it was so good what I did eat. So delicious! Thanks Yelp friends! We ordered using the square site which said they didn't have shakes or tots. They did, so we added those when we arrived. Cattleman's burger was delicious! This used to be the spot to go for hamburgers but it seems as if the food and the service have gone way down hill. We went in a few weeks ago and it was way too hot to sit and eat so we told her we couldn't eat there. She became upset with my wife for unknowingly using the bathroom without purchasing food there. We also had an order that was wronge once we did not want free stuff but the kid that was in charge at the time became rude with us then also basically calling us liars. Hal's was just what needed, a classic drive in with quick service and and outdoor seating on a road trip. The staff was friendly, the burgers were wolfed down, and I know the ice cream snacks are what you can expect from a top notch drive in. Bring a four legged friend and they might get a nice treat as well. read more

The burger patties are so thin you can practically see through them. The cost is high for what you get, also, I don't think the grease in thier fryers are changed very often the few times I've been here I've gotten a terrible stomach ache. read more

Tater tots were good, but unfortunately that was about it. Burgers were okay but overcooked. The Hawaiian burger didnt have ham?! French fries tasted like 2 day old fries that were redipped a couple times, horrible. Monster burger was again okay, but dry and overcooked. This has been one of my favorite places since I was little! My fiancé and me went here today and had a fairly normal sized order. Two burgers, two fries, and two shakes. It took a fairly long time to make the order which was weird because we were the only ones there, but it was fine. Then a girl swings open the window and says "two burgers, a fry, and a tot?" We ordered two fries but my fiancé likes tater tots so we just took it. Then she grabs the shakes my fiancé grabs them and we drive off as we don't have air conditioning and it was hot. My fiancé goes to take a drink of his and it's a small, we ordered two larges. The burgers were good but they messed up over half our order and we were the only ones there, I was not impressed. read more

Stopped at Hal's to try their hamburgers. Have stooped before, but only had their milk shakes - maybe 3 stars, but nothing great. So this time we decided to order the burgers and then go to Wendy's for their shakes ( did this once before ). Hamburger was great! Probably the best I have had in either Pendleton or LaGrande. To me this is a five star burger. Downside of our visit, though really not that bad, was that the young man doing the cooking was all alone. He had to take orders from both the counter and the drive thru, cook all the orders, then collect for all of them. He was extremely rushed, but remained polite through the whole ordeal. For those of you who have followed our quest to find the best burger and chocolate shake, know that Pendleton has it share of problems. The first time we stopped for a quick meal at Burger King, their grill was broken, as was their shake machine. Another time we stopped at a diner downtown, I had to order a cheeseburger w/o the cheese in order to get a regular burger. Then another time we stopped at a char-burger spot and their shake machine was broken (this was the first we took our burgers to Wendy's for shakes). This time Wendy's ice cream machine was broken! I have lived in Pilot Rock for 2 years, normally I drive To Pendleton just to get Hal's it's my favorite place to eat. The customer service has always been great, as well As the food. I had my first bad experience, the server young girl blonde hair tied back working on 06/03/21 during 5:35 pm, was so rude to begin with all I asked was if I had already requested what I want on my burger. I ordered a shake waited for a long time, while this individual served two other cars that had showed up after I did. Hal's normally gives you your shake right away when you order one. Mine was given to me when I got my food, my shake was melted as if the server made it and left it sitting on the counter top, my lid on my shake was also popped off the cup. I had requested the server to remake my shake explained that it was really melted as she replied that well it is really hot that's why it was melted. The server than took my shake back stated she re made it. I shake was melted it looked like the server just put more ice cream and re mixed it. I was so fed up I just drove home and threw the shake away. Staff is always friendly and really nice, after this visit I will not be going back. read more

No, not the elegant eatery. But, yes, the best shakes in the world and I am not kidding. My husband and I have traveled to various places in God's great world and Hal's crafts the best. I ordered a peanut butter shake and the delicious peanut butter kept working its way up my straw ... so taste-pleasing. A couple days later, I ordered the strawberry shake, and yes, the sweet strawberries kept surprising me through the straw, like they were just picked. When I opened the lid after finishing, there were still strawberries on the bottom to enjoy. My husband had a Butterfinger candy bar flavor combo with Butterfinger chunks which rode up his straw, and when he opened the lid, there remained a great deal of Butterfinger on the bottom of the cup. This is true for several of their flavors that are not syrup based. read more
