We came as a small group with friends (two couples) on a random week night and the place was lively, but not packed. Super cute neighborhood bar in south loop. I was surprised by how extensive the drink menu was. Interior is very lively and casual. There is bar seating at the front and tables in the back. The service is very friendly. The menu has a ton of cocktails, and some of them are really creative. I had a mule with kombucha which was a fun take on the drink. There's an extensive beer list as well. It's clear the bar takes their drinks seriously. The food came in heaping portions and were generous for the price. They have a large selection of sandwiches. OH. MY. GOD. THE. BURGER. A Chicago food influencer that I follow on instagram posted about the burger a couple days ago and we decided to try it out. We love burgers so much. There's a couple places in LA at the top of our burger list, they are mostly gourmet burgers but this is just something else. This is, hands down, the BEST classic burger I have ever had. Every thing about it is perfect and goes so well together. The sauce and grilled onions would almost be a bit too sweet, but the pickle balances it out for in the best way. We have lived in the neighborhood now for a couple years and I can't believe this is just now coming into our lives. I can't wait to walk here in the summer. I had high hopes to eat from here. I drive past this place on a weekly basis and have told several coworkers that one day, I want to check out the restaurant. The menu is a little confusing. So, I ordered a cheese hamburger. The menu did not say that it's a double patty burger. That's too much to eat in one setting, especially for my daily job. After driving away and going back to work to eat it, I was disappointed in the look, texture, and presentation. My hamburger was half done. I eat my hamburgers well done. It was too raw and pink. I couldn't eat it. The only thing that I could eat for a short period of time was the French Fries. Our time is limited. Therefore, I can't go back to exchange or ask for a refund. I'm stuck with a $15, half done, double patty cheese burger that can't eat. There's a few things that I can do with it: 1. Trash it... but i dont like to waste food. 2. Feed the wild animals. 3. See if my dog wants it 4. Refrigerate and cook it more in the next two days because I am off from work. I don't eat mayonnaise either. I can wipe that item off as much as I can. This was once a Blackies, and we loved it. But Half Sour has become a gem in its own right, and it is welcomed to both the South Loop and Printer's Row. The menu items are creative and the execution is what you would hope for in Chicago. It's possible that the building is relatively new, or that its history isn't widely documented, but maybe built in the 20th or 21st century. That's old to me. Enjoy! read more

Went here with a friend on a Friday night just to get out. It was pretty open very few people there. The staff was pretty friendly and attentive. Music was pretty decent. Food was pretty good. I am a huge Half Sour fan! I've been many times since moving to the South Loop/Printers Row area a few years ago and have never been disappointed (except one time when they were actually out of half sour pickles, but I've gotten over that). Their bagel chips are out of this world! Any dip we've had them with (artichoke or salmon) is just stellar. Our favorite is the salmon dip - it's super rich and creamy and full of that salmony goodness. I'm also a fan of their namesake half sour pickles. I'm a sucker for most pickled vegetables, and they do a great job with their cucumbers. I'll also give a shout out to their fried chicken sandwiches (any of them) - they're all fantastic. Juicy chicken, flavorful batter and spices, just a winner every time. If there's anything to skip here, in my opinion it's the latkes. There are better places in the area to get them and better things on the menu to try. They also have a great beer selection and tons of weekly events. A local favorite! I've come in a few times and overall the food is okay and the service is great. Waitstaff is friendly and most of the times you can just seat yourself at any open spot. When I came most recently for brunch my friend and I were severely disappointed. This was my 3-4th time coming and the food has increasingly gotten worse. My salmon Benedict was swimming in a soup of hollandaise sauce and the fish was so dry. In the past, their fresh bagels and latkes have been fantastic. It was about to start raining on their patio and they told us there was no room for me and my wife to move inside. I assume the comedy set downstairs would be a bit more of a mingle situation but think bar and restaurant, it's not a lounge. The food ... I'm going to say it's good but not amazing which is where they lost a star. The smoked salmon was very dry. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say I would still order it again. Even though the texture could have been better the dish overall was good. The service is where it is at for Half Sour! I don't know who hired their manager, waitstaff, table busers, and bartenders but very good job! They get it right every time. You aren't going to go in there and have a bad experience because someone was rude, or having a bad day. My experience is they know how to put their customers first and expect their needs. My husband and I come here probably once a week and it is consistently wonderful. The chef made a drink is my absolute favorite cocktail, friends who have moved away get jealous when I send them pictures of it. Called up to order to order the fried chicken dinner for pick-up, but all sold out early! Kudos for using compostable packaging! The burger and chocolate cake were recommended by the man on the phone, and then I added the fried artichokes when I arrived - 2/3 were great! The burger is massive - two perfectly cooked patties. Though I like typically like to have fresh lettuce and tomatoes, the burger was still delicious. Their fries are thinly cut, seasoned, and tasty as well. They were mushy because there were no holes punched in the box. The fried artichokes were really tasty, probably because it's heavily battered and really greasy (again, mushy because there were no holes punched in the box). I popped them in the oven to make them crisp. The chocolate cake was a #fail. It was suggested to me as just made; but if it was, then it was just not for me in terms of taste and texture because it was like eating a Cliff bar with Sculpey clay- textured frosting. I like fluffy, moist cake. This tasted artificial, for lack of a better word. It ended up in the the trash bin. If you like chocolate cake, carrot cake, cheesecake, I recommend Eleven's desserts, which are good size portions and delicious. read more

Our company holiday lunch was virtual this year and I decided to ignore my waistline and order a spicy fried chicken sandwich. I had seen some fine creations, but Half Sour photos were drool worthy so I went in. It's HUGE. Like they cut both chicken breasts off one bird and stuck it on the bun. Still crunchy after delivery, but the buns were super soggy (I should have ordered coleslaw and aioli in the side). The chicken itself was juicy. My wife and I were pleasantly surprised to find this neighborhood gem. After spot hero-ing nearby, we wished to grab a bev and bite and try our hand at stub hubbing for the bears game. The service was very friendly and pleasant. Lots of bev options to be had, we also arrived on half price bottle wine night (Sunday). The food we had, was OK. She had the reuben but would not get it again, she likes for it to be a bit more decadent (think grilled). I opted for the dry rub bbq wings and while they were good for the most part, I did note that some of the larger size ones were not cooked evenly to the bone though. All in all though, compared to the sparse options found in this area of town, it is nice to have a go to to hang your hat. My husband and Stumbled upon Half Sour on a lovely Sunday evening when we were trying to get lucky on Stub Hub to see the Bears vs. the Chiefs. We didn't get lucky in that department, but we did have a nice time at Half Sour. If we lived in the area I think this would be a lovely little third place to hang out. Everyone there seemed to be having a wonderful time connecting with friends and loved ones....this vibe really rubs off and gives the place a warm vibe. I loved the decor and the staff was friendly and efficient. I had a lovely sour raspberry beer to go along with my Ruben sandwich. I thought the sandwich was oak...the bread was lightly toasted and I prefer a slightly more charred exterior to my ruben...I need to learn to ask for this. I thought the meat was also a bit dry. As a member of the South Loop community, it has been overwhelming to try and go to all the local spots... Man, am I so glad that I finally got around to going to Half Sour! My friend and I met for dinner on their patio tonight and had a great time. I also brought my dog and she got her own little water bowl when we sat down! The staff was FANTASTIC and had great senses of humor. There was a wide variety of food and drink that anyone could find something to enjoy! I had the Printers Row Book Binder to drink and the Rainbow Burger to eat. The beer paired perfectly with the burger and fries. I felt the beer was a good size for the price. Now onto reviewing the burger, YUM! The burger was a special for Pride Month and portions of the proceeds were donated to the Trevor Project (we love an ally!), which is what ultimately led me to choose the unique burger. The burger had pico de gallo, chipotle aioli, pepper Jack cheese, corn salsa, avocado purée, tortilla chips, arugula, and blueberry molita salsa all on it. While a bit on the spicer side (and someone who isn't a huge fan of spicier foods), I found having enough water and beer made it completely tolerable. The fries that came with the burger were also seasoned so well. For a good summer weekday spot, Half Sour is the place to be. I moved into a nearby apartment complex and wanted to see what was good around there to eat. So many options but stumbled upon Half Sour since it was so convenient to walk here. There's paid parking all around, but very walkable if in the area and CTA is easily accessible around there as well. I got the salmon and OMG it was so good! I also got the Chef Made a Drink. It was soo delicious! It was also my server's recommendation. Everyone was so friendly and food came out so quickly. This place is on the pricier end, but it was well worth it.
