*sigh* Ya know when you go to a new restaurant and everything is so perfect and you're so happy and you can't wait to go back and you swear that you've just found your new favorite restaurant? But then you wonder to yourself how it's possible that everything was so perfect and you hope it wasn't a fluke? Yeeaaah. Our first visit to Half Shells was perfect. Perfect food, perfect service, perfect bill. We gushed to ourselves that we'd eat there once a week. Whelp, we didn't eat there every week. In fact, we waited a couple of months before we paid Half Shells another visit. And it kinda sucked. Man, I hate when that happens. To start, our server was very confused. Or maybe we were confused. No, we were definitely confused. We had 2 waiters for the first 20 minutes or so and each of them were doing double duty trying to get our drink order and upsell us an appetizer. It was only a little annoying and they finally got it worked out. Unfortunately, we ended up with the slower and more inattentive of the two. Bummer for us. The boys didn't want to share the Beach Party Platter with me, so I got the Crab Leg Platter and substituted all of the sausage for more crab legs. When the platter came out, I had the 2 sets of legs that come with the platter, 2 extra legs, one corn and one potato. Let me just explain that by 2 extra legs I mean 2 single legs, not the extra set like before. *sigh* It was still pretty good so I was willing to overlook it. My husband ordered the Herb Crusted Sole with a tomato basil crème sauce from the specials chalk board. It came with chipotle mashed potatos and steamed veggies. To be blunt, it was horrible. The crust was extremely overpowering and tasted like they threw in every herb from the garden, the fish was pretty dry and overcooked and the chipotle mashed potatoes were inedible. Our server came by to ask how everything was as my husband was throwing in the towel and I couldn't get him to say anything about it. He just wanted to be done with it. My son ordered the hamburger and thought it was pretty good. When I took a bite I immediately knew why. It tasted exactly like a school cafeteria soyburger. If you attended public school at all you know exactly what I'm talking about. I ate those things for 12 years and can identify that particular taste in my sleep. I'm hoping that we hit Half Shells on a bad night. The boys did agree that we should've stuck with the Beach Party Platter. You can bet your sweet ass that's what we'll be getting next time. Half Shells can only be described as an oft-forgotten, underrated gem of a restaurant. While located within earshot of SMU in Snider Plaza, were it not for the young servers, you might forget about how close it is to the thousands of obnoxious university students who fortunately eat elsewhere. Seafood in land-locked Dallas isn't going to blow fare from Louisiana or New England out of the water, but Half Shells makes a great attempt. The restaurant is casual table dining with a few booths and bar seats available. When the weather is nice, ask for a table in the New Orleans-esque patio outside (side, literally). For food, start off with the oyster nachos which are a top-selling appetizer, and for good reason. The crab cakes are also quite tasty. A number of entrees are available including po-boy sandwiches, gumbo, fried catfish, shrimp, crawfish, fish tacos, and a variety of fresh fish dishes featured on the chalked, ever-changing "specials" board hanging from the wall. Entrées typically come with a number of sides and the apple coleslaw, as healthy as it is flavorful, is a great option. To finish, try the bread pudding. Really, try it. A number of draught beers are available, Pyramid Hefeweizen being the most popular, in addition to the wide selection of bottled choices. While Half Shells is no wine-lovers paradise, a satisfactory offering of red and white wines is also available. The service is generally quick and kind, though not memorable. The facility itself is no architectural masterpiece. The food, however, does not disappoint, is more than affordable, and doesn't skimp on the portions. Whether from the Gulf wanting a quality taste of home, from the Northeast trying out a different side to seafood, or from the West Coast learning there is more to seafood than sushi, Half Shells is absolutely worth a look. read more

Half Shells is just down the plaza from Penne Pomodoro, which has become one of my weekly dining habits. This past weekend, during the All Star Game, I went to Penne and then ventured down to Half Shells for some libations. They have very friendly service that was prompt to greet us and requested that we choose our seat. Our waiter was very attentive and got our drink order right out and was ready to take our food order. When we told our waiter (David) that we were just going to drink, he said, "No problem!" and carefully kept an eye on our drinks. Complimentary, David brought us some oyster nachos, which I would highly recommend! They have a great outside side patio, and if had been warmer weather I would be tempted to sit outside. They only have one small TV in the bar area so it's not a great "sports bar" place to watch TV. They only have one unisex restroom, so I can imagine if it's packed in the restaurant, that might not be fun. The restroom was very clean, though :) read more

Can't believe I forgot to review this place. It is really a great neighborhood low-key joint with STELLAR crab cakes. Seriously, I never get those at most places because they're 90% filler like a salmon croquette. These, however, are fried crisp but still thick with moist big lumps of crab, served with a good cocktail/creole type creamy sauce for dippin'. While I often get fried oysters (great!) , there are always tempting offerings on the chalkboard for that day. Good cold beers--they've got a small bar crammed in back there where a few people will sit on the tall stools. Very friendly place. You see a lot of families in here with small children, I've noticed. Probably walked from their nearby Highland Park/University Park homes. Oh wait, we're in America. Okay, scratch the walking part. I enjoy this place for a quick lunch once in a while. The location is a little small, so try to avoid the typical lunch hour if possible. All of the servers are friendly and quick to bring you refills and your meal. Seating can be problematic, so make sure you like the people you're with since you'll probably be pretty close to them while eating. The seafood is always fresh and well seasoned. I cannot resist this place if I'm in that part of town. Definite dishes to try out: * Red beans & rice - has a spicy, bold flavor; * Coconut shrimp - coconut + shrimp = win in my book anyday and the batter isn't too thick; * Fish tacos (or shrimp) - light breading, is never overcooked, and the sauce adds a nice kick; * Raw oysters - these are usually fresh, though you run into a bad one every now & again; * Crab cakes - The crab is piled thick and is always juicy. I think you can get this in sandwich form, too. If you're not a seafood fan, there are alternatives on the menu as well. Let me start this review by stating that my mom lived in New Orleans until she was 30 years old, so she KNOWS good seafood. I've actually taken her here twice (once to the location up on Legacy) and it's gotten her stamp of approval. I always get the crab cake sandwich and it is one of the best crab cakes I have ever had the pleasure of eating. It's all crab with a handful of bread crumbs and just the right seasoning. It's not one of those crab cakes that deep fried in a thick crust of batter with hardly any crab in it. This is the business!! it comes on a whole wheat bun and your choice of a salad, fries, cole slaw (the good vinegar kind!) or soup -- and let me digress here, because they make a pretty killer cream of jalepeno soup. And my mom can attest to the fact that they make a pretty darn good poboy too. According to her, it's all about the bread -- not too hard, but definitely not too soft or doughy... Needs a nice crust so it holds up to the messy insides. At Half Shells they give you the option of having your poboy insides (choice of shrimp, crawfish, oyster, etc...) fried, blackened or grilled. I LOVE their grilled crawfish poboy, but mom went for the grilled shrimp version and it was equally tasty. This is one of those places I always forget about, but am always pleased when it pops into my head and I stop in for a seafood fix. I can not say enough great things about Half Shells. We are there every couple of months and every time we go we are nicely greeted and seated. The restaurant is small so it's almost always packed but we have never had to wait to long for a table and that goes for today too. Typically, we split and appetizer and entree because the portions are so ample but today we were with the family so we over splurged and got two appetizers, soup and entrees. Wholly miserably full after. Appetizers: A must are the oyster nachos. If you have never had oysters because you think it's gross or slimey you will change your mind after biting into one of these little treats. I'd say if you are not brave enough to order them, ask if you can try one....I've never done it but I bet they would let you and then you will be hooked. We also had the fried calamari. It was okay, not great but palatable. I had calamari at Eddie V's last night and that was the B-O-M-B. Oh I forgot, I ordered a crab cake for my entree from the app menu. It was moist on the inside and crunchy on the outside and a little larger than the palm of my hand. Great and recommended. Soup: Clam chowder yes please. Very tasty with large chunks of clams and little chunks of red potatoes. Kinda soupy (not thick)...I liked. I had Kenney's wood fired grill's Clam Chowder last week and that was thick and oh so yummy too. Entree: Fish Tacos are another must try. The tilapia comes wrapped in a flour tortilla with...I think cabbage and a sauce then the taco is grilled to give a slight crisp to the tortilla. The entree comes with FOUR large pieces, probably as long as my hand then it also comes with rice and salad. Be prepared for a doggie bag. Service: attentive, relaxed and generally upbeat. We've had some "meh" experiences at Half Shells since the first review, so it's time for an update from the original 5-stars...sad day. While it's still a contender when we discuss oyster options, we don't automatically run here anymore. I am an oyster fiend, and the raw gulf oysters just weren't that good last time we visited. I was hoping to get the Atlantic oysters (which I loved before), but they were out. I was less than thrilled with the gulf oysters I received, although they were better than the one shucking catastrophe we've encountered here before. I'm originally from Louisiana, and there was a pretty big difference in taste and quality of the gulf oysters I'm used to...not sure exactly how to describe it. If all they had was their regular menu, this place really wouldn't be much to talk about, but their specials are fantastic! They have around 6-7 every time you come in and they are different every time. Always delicious! Off the regular menu the cajun pasta is definitely my favorite. Perfect amount of spice. My big complaint is that there isn't really anything healthy on the menu unless you're in the mood for raw oysters. So while this is a seafood place, the type of food served here is typically fried and/or has a very heavy sauce poured on top of it and is served over rice. read more

Came to Half Shells for the first time before an SMU football game and had a great experience. We didn't have a full dinner, just some beers, oysters, and crab stuffed mushrooms but everything was delightful! Beer was on special and icey cold. Oysters were fresh and light with wonderfully tangy horseradish (hotter than most) to supplement. The crab stuffed mushrooms were a nice addition. I've been having a taste for lobster bisque for a few days. This place wasn't too far and had great reviews so I decided to try them out. I started with the soup sampler and picked the bisque. I also wanted to try the trout because I had never tasted trout before. Food came out pretty fast and looked delicious. My first bite was quite disappointing. No seasoning on my filet so I picked another section to try and then I tasted the lemon pepper flavor. Basically it wasn't completely seasoned. Not sure why because there was only 1 other couple there and they already had there food delivered to their table so there was no other orders in the kitchen. Green beans were good and tasted really fresh. The cheese grits were average. Got home and heated up the lobster bisque because I ordered it to go and it was too salty to even enjoy. The only reason I'm giving them 2 stars instead if 1 is because my waitress was a doll. I thought about ordering a cocktail and she gave me a sample and it was a 5 star drink. Titos lemonade. I would come back just to get the drink and for the cool down to earth staff and decor. Not sure I would eat there again though. read more

I typically don't eat in Snider Plaza, but if I do usually I will go here. The waitresses are especially nice. Highlights: Red Beans and Rice(heavy dish but haven't had better in D-Town) Coconut Shrimp(i realize this is a common dish but they do it well) Fish/Shrimp Tacos(you just have to try them) Oysters(raw and fried) Shrimp Po Boys Frozen Margaritas, these are strong (with a damn good happy hour, get drunk fast and cheap) The specials/sides are good too. If you want seafood but are looking for something on the lighter side, just ask for a piece of tilapia, trout, or salmon grilled. They will serve it with steamed vegetables/spinach/broccoli/other vegetables that are available everyday. They almost always have spinach which they cook with some thin red bell pepper strips(always perfectly cooked and flavorful) Make sure you say no butter if you are really going light. It tastes great without the butter. This is the sort of place a parkie may pass by a million times in their life but never give it a chance. Spicy shrimp appetizer sitting on top of shredded iceberg lettuce like from McDonald's or something like that, boring and very uninspired. Lol. Crab cake came with a salad on plate but these were quality greens but no dressing and crab cake was mushy, yet almost burnt on one side, quite a bit fishy so it couldn't be all that fresh and there was no sort of sauce for crab cake..?? It seems to me like you should stick to oysters dishes when coming to this place but that's just my first impression. I am a fan. Nothing overly amazing or compelling but good service, good atmosphere and good food. I shared their steamed pot (crab, shrimp, corn, sausage, and potatoes). The corn wasn't good and wasn't hot, but you also don't normally get a steamed basket for the corn, you get it for the crab and they had a good amount of crab and shrimp in their steamed basket. Lets start with the food that was excellent: the jalapeño soup, the nacho oysters, the bloody mary with a jumbo shrimp and the oysters that are in the normal menu. The cobbler as dessert was really good too. I love the ambience of the place that transports you to the southeast and another decade, the friendliness of the staff and the fact that they give you samples to try all their soups. But most of all: the prices! You can have a delicious meal for not a lot of money. I tried the crawfish and I thought the experience was amazing. I personally was not a fan of the flavor, I think I prefer shrimp over crawfish but it is really fun to eat them and the way they prepare is very unique. At a half Shells, you can enjoy different types of oysters, as they receive fresh shipments every day. My experience with eating oysters on the half shell had been limited to just Gulf oysters, dressed in a variety of ways; but not the variety of oysters or species that exist. At Half Shells, I tried two types I never had before, and could really taste how not all oysters are the same. My dining companion and I arrived at 9:30pm on a Saturday, and our server was named Drew. It is always refreshing when the server truly understands the distinctions of the products he is presenting. Drew was enthusiastic about the selection of raw oysters, and accurately described the flavor differences and origins of each type. We ordered Blue Points, Katama Bay, and Gulf oysters. Our server brought us a complimentary sampler of soups and a fried oyster nacho. The nacho was delicious, and I almost ordered that, but the soups were somewhat salty and did not appeal. Seafood soups are usually salty, so that was just normal. Because their special of the day included soft shell crab, we ordered two, and enjoyed those on mixed veggies. I added soft shell crab as another of my first time experiences. I ate my crab slowly, to savor the experience of the creamy flavor and delicate texture. It was mild and delicious, but I now know that I prefer the stronger flavor and more chewy texture of crab in a shell. Everything we tried was at the recommendation of our server Drew, who also politely told me the prices when I asked. Enthusiastic presentation by a server can be suspicious in an unfamiliar restaurant, but it was clear to see that our server really understood his product. Our expectations were fulfilled. I am no novice to unique foods, international cuisine, or seafood; but dinner tonight was a chance to have three items that were new to me in one sitting. I visited with two friends tonight who had not been here before. We arrived at 6:30, had a 30 minute wait, and left around 10. We had crawfish (no spice, medium, or spicy are options), oyster nachos (cornmeal-crusted oyster that aren't greasy on corn chips with pico), and a steamed seafood platter (lots of steamed seafood to choose from. Crab!) It was all fresh, clean, and delicious. Our order was taken promptly but it took some time to get our food, which was fine because we sipped on cocktails and had a lot to discuss...and that tiny kitchen handles every order as quickly as they possibly can. Upon arriving, expect to wait your turn for a table in this small, narrow, cozy, festive, bustling space. Waiting inside can be arduous (because it's narrow and bustling!) so I recommend ordering a drink and sitting outside in the outdoor covered alley. The servers stay very busy so if you feel ignored or slighted, simply grab the attention of a server or manager and they will make sure you're attended to. If you're in a hurry, want a quiet dinner, or are not comfortable in cozy spaces, you might not like it here. If you aren't pressed for time, are in the mood for delicious seafood, have patience, and want to mentally transport yourself to the Gulf for a couple of hours, you might just love Half Shells. There is a tiny bar, one restroom (meaning one toilet and sink), and a little outdoor alley that's covered which is quaint (but could use some nicer heaters!). As far as I'm concerned, this is a GEM of a restaurant nestled in Snider Plaza near SMU. Five stars for all of the above, I just wish I could be right next to the ocean when I walk out of the door. read more

This is one of favorites in Dallas. The food is great. Seafood is fresh and prepared so that you can taste it-not a lot of sauces and other things to cover taste. They change the menu a few times a year to keep in new. Good sides-their slaw is one of the best ever. Appetizers are great- try the chipolte shrimp, oyster nachos, and buffalo shrimp (not on the menu any longer but worth asking for). Beyond the food, the staff is friendly and knows the food. Manager is superb and always walking around to check on diners. The place is small but cozy. Reminds me of places line I grew up around Galveston. You definitely should visit this place. We decided to try Half Shells last weekend when my family was visiting from out of town. There's a really good fried seafood, beer bucket kind of place in Houston that I grew up going to, so I was kinda looking to recreate the experience in Dallas. Well, except for a few small things, we had a great time at Half Shells. The food was delicious. The hush puppies were served hot and were SO good. The fried catfish was yummy, not too much breading. The platters offer a ton of food. It's definitely enough to split between two people. The gumbo was good, although I thought it could have been a little spicier. Now for the things I didn't like. The fries. They have a funny taste. I'll just make sure to order a different side next time. The seating. It was a beautiful day, and I had been hoping to sit outside or at least in an area that let in a lot of the light. Half Shells has a small outdoor area, but it's not conducive to groups larger than 4 (and that looked like a squeeze). The restaurant itself is dark and hardly let in any light. So, the atmosphere wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but the food is so good that I'll definitely be coming back for more. read more

I lived less than a 2 minute walk from here for my four years at SMU and I didn't discover Half Shells until graduation week. I would have frequented this restaurant easily, had I had the slightest knowledge of how great their food is. I never heard anything about it, so I never thought to try it. Half Shells is great- they have a HUGE menu and pretty great prices for being in the Highland Park area. I got their raw oysters, which are comparable to the oysters in Boston. Fresh oysters in Dallas?! Who knew?! Also ordered their crab cake, and it was simple and delish. I'll be back there for sure, even though I am no longer a block away. Preface: my wife and I have been trying to find good Cajun food since our New Orleans vacation in 2014. Fast forward past Dodie's and Razzoo's to put visit here. This place has it going on. The gumbo tasted authentic, not over salted like the other "Cajun" places. The crawfish poboy was excellent, the French loaf was soft on the inside, perfect crust. They have waffle fries, win! The dusting on the fries are perfect and even better when dipped in the chipotle tartar sauce. Catfish was crisp, fresh and not over seasoned. Great server, Amanda, recommended everything we are and we loved it. My wife even ate the cheese grits, she hates grits normally. She said they were the perfect consistency and flavor. Half Shells is a great seafood place to eat at! We're visiting out of town from California and I actually work at a seafood restaurant and I must say this place has some very tasty dishes. I started off with a seasonal cranberry cinnamon sour, it was very good, just not a traditional sour with egg white, but great nonetheless. Then I had a mix of crab bisque and clam chowder, would highly recommend doing the mix! We told the bartender it was our first time and the manager brought out a little sample tray of their soups and their signature app fried oyster nachos, all very tasty. I went with some Alabama raw oysters which were great and fresh. For my entree I had blackened shrimp over red beans and rice and let me tell you how delicious this dish was. Lots of seasoning on the shrimp and great fresh flavor, the rice and beans had sausage mixed which made it extra tasty. Would highly recommend this place and the prices weren't bad at all. I don't remember our bartender's name but she was very nice and attentive. All I know is she has long brown hair and is half Japanese I believe. Again great place definitely try it out!!! read more
