Location, location, location...this more casual sibling of Harvest is right near the Dobbs Ferry train station, on the banks of the Hudson River. The view is beautiful. There's also a big bar outdoors, along with an area to hang out riverside. There is seating outdoors. The restaurant is cavernous, with a lot of good views. When it's warm, there are some temperature control issues in the main dining area. I have eaten at Half Moon 3 or 4 times. The food has varied. Last night the seafood was well prepared. Previously the seafood entrees couldn't be salvaged even after a return trip to the kitchen. The wine list is reasonable. The martinis are good. The service is variable. Last night it was somewhere between benign neglect and abandonment. Maybe it was because as a party of 8, a 20% tip was guaranteed. On other nights, the service was better. The bottom line is that Half Moon is a great setting to spend a pleasant evening The food and service are both luck of the draw. When weather is nice, I can get past ditzy service and uninspired food. It would be awesome to take the train to Dobbs Ferry and have a cocktail outdoors. read more

Hostess just handed us the menus and pointed to a table in the back of the restaurant...should have known that was a bad sign! Went for Valentine's special menu...very, very disappointing...didn't even get my appetizer or dessert...very bad service...and my entree was ice cold, inedible and served to me about fifteen minutes after my husband's. Food was not good, but so expensive that I asked to have it wrapped so we could bring it home. They just dropped a broken box on our table and walked away. No bread on the table...no apology for forgetting courses...in fact, the wait staff was arguing that they didn't forget! Had our anniversary dinner & drinks here on Saturday night! We had to wait a long time since we didn't make reservations but the wait was beautiful right on the water with nice drinks. The patio is being built so that would be great and quicker to get drinks. :). We had the shrimp & oysters for app so fresh and the shrimp were huge!!! The duck tacos where so husbands favorite. So delicious. I had the steak that was over cooked very little pink but someone from the restaurant who didn't introduce himself said there was some pink in the steak which made that medium rare. And continued to argue with my husband. Very awkward. Made my husband upset the rest of the night. They removed that from the bill but it was very embarrassing and completed rude. The dessert wild berry sorbet and strawberry short cake were delicious. Was not as expected, we went for nye dinner with our kids, one we actually pulled into the restaurant there was a fight between a 2 couples right In front of the entrance we had to maneuver around, we were seated in appropriate time. The food was great can not complain on that but the service was absolutely terrible, the server had no idea of the menu and was rude. 2 stars. 4 for the food negative 2 for the poor service!! read more

So ridiculously disappointed. Come here for happy hour OFTEN. We always order a selection of crostini's from the happy hour menu. The steak tartare crostini's were literally GREY. Absolutely inexcusable to put out a product that looks like that. I don't understand how any chef could feel good about sending that out to a guest. Best/worst part is-- the bartender told us that she herself made a comment to the kitchen when she received our order to bring to us. She said they didn't look OR smell right. They sent them out anyway. I don't go out with the expectation of receiving anything for free. But to be served (by the kitchen) with such lackluster laziness as we were, and not even be offered a drink by a manager or an apology -- to still be charged for everything and not even have our tartare taken off (happy hour would have been like $8 off) is just ridiculous. They'll give you the 20 minute wait trick, bit by the time we ordered drink and went to the patio to catch the sunset, my phone was buzzing and our outside table was ready! PEI oysters were fresh and tasty, mushroom app was OK, draft beer, Brooklyn Summer ale was actually very good, Bartender outside was prompt and attentive! My Salmon dish over cucumbers was interesting, Salmon was seared very nicely, but the pairing with cucumbers was kinda strange. I remember when this was the Chart House, such a beautiful place and location. While the food is good albeit a bit overpriced for the quality, I understand you come here for the ambience. Unfortunately service here is horrible. It took almost 10 minutes upon sitting for anyone to even acknowledge our party after being sat down by the hostess. Finally the waitress comes but was very short and we felt like she was hurrying us, maybe it was end of her shift. Most of the dinner we wondered if our waitress went home because she was MIA. The servers were a mixed bag, some were attentive with filling up our waters, some could not even give the right plates to the right people, instead they left it with the wrong person and just asked them to pass it down. It is a shame as this place has so much potential, now I get it when people describe half moon as "oh yea the place that used to be chart house, it has real nice views, foods ok but good luck with the service ..." read more

Only thing this place has going for it is the view. Food is ok. Service horrendous. We sat outside on the south patio. The hostess told is it would be a 1 hour wait for 4 people and it ended up being a 5 minute wait. Easiest way to lose customers is telling them its an hour for seats and them leaving. We sat down and the waiter took the order. 40 minutes goes by and not even apps came to the table. Then i call the waiter and he looks baffled when i ask him where the apps are. Tell me there was a problem with the computer. Oldest excise in the book. Food finally comes and the burger has no onions as promises on the menu. Not even an add on but a standard thing with the burger. I ordered the crab sandwich and i get the chicken sandwich. Everyone is eating but me. The food looks like a child put it together. See pics. We have dined here often and usually go for the pretty setting on the water and have appetizers and drinks overlooking the gorgeous river. The bar menu is more limited than the main restaurant which is fine however we ate inside this time and found the food quality to have gone down . A pasta dish with fresh tomatoes was bland and flavorless , the duck tacos - a gold standard were so spicy they were inedible , my husband used to love them but the new chef changed the recipe and he found them too spicy . Clam chowder was good but has a strong bacon taste, the menu is tired and over priced for the size of the portions - it's too bad the food is not inspiring because it's such a lovely location . Came here for restaurant week with my boyfriend. We ordered the mussels, clam chowder, calamari, and ceviche. Everything was good. I enjoyed the calamari however, they were a little soggy so my boyfriend didn't enjoy them as much. I have a hard time finding places that have good ceviche but Half Moon's is good compared to the others I've tried. The mussels were pretty good and so were the drinks. Pretty ambiance, bad food. I ate the Blackened Salmon Sandwich. It looked like a leftover sandwich you put together when there's nothing else In the fridge. It came out on a soggy hamburger bun and fell apart within two bites. I asked for a side of sweet potato fries and they were undercooked. The avocado that came on the sandwich was a spread that tasted like pre-made guacamole you get from ShopRite. My girlfriend got the muscles and they were underwhelming as well. We also had three waiters which was confusing. It's a shame because it's a beautiful place. But the food is not worth the price, especially with better restaurants in the area. read more

Great view of the Hudson, seeing as it's right on the banks, so definitely come when it's nice out and pick the outdoor seating. You pay for the view... unfortunately my view was a foggy, rainy night. The wine was delicious but that comes in a bottle. For the price you pay per meal we were all disappointed. The calamari was delicious, the other appetizers were fried and nothing special. The pizza was doughy, falling apart. I had a lobster roll.. well I ordered a lobster roll, I received 75% french fries (which we the best part of the meal), 5% coleslaw which was horrible, 15% roll and 5% lobster meat. I was expecting a nice hardy meal of lobster and boy was I disappointed. It was not very tasteful and was maybe four bites worth of food. When the plate was placed down in front of my I immediately regretted my order. The wife had a fish special which she said was good but it looked like it came in a bowl of soup. I will be back for the outside bar, hoping the clientele does not lean toward trashy (sorry). Nice place inside, but EDM music (and crowd) a bit loud. Was waited on by 4 separate servers - 3 were very polite but main waitress was inexcusably abrupt. For $40+/entree, I expect polite at least. Spent $16 for a wedge salad (good but small butter lettuce), $19 for 3 duck tacos (good but $19) $43 for a strip that I had to send back - 1/2 was well-done and other 1/2 medium-well. I ordered medium rare. Replacement was rare, but better. Worst was additional $36 for HALF a broiled chicken lobster that was awfully dry. I asked for steamed but they don't do that for 1/2. ($72 for a chicken lobster is... too much). Again, 3 stars (would be 2) because I loved the patio. At 25% less, this place would be 4 stars. Food just wasn't good enough to ever get 5. read more

This restaurant is pretty good on the weekdays. But it's really good for brunch on Sunday. Someone back in the kitchen loves Mexican food and they let them loose for brunch. Breakfast burritos, guacamole, huevos rancheros - it's all great. Of course they've got all of the regular menu items as well. But weekdays are straight down the middle, primarily seafood. So I took my family here for my birthday. I haven't been here in many many years since it was the chart house and wanted to try something new. The place was very busy for a Saturday night the atmosphere is very nice. A couple of us ordered the strip steak, and I am a very big steak person, the steak was horrible. Full of muscle and fat. And it wasn't just mine, they were all the same. I don't mind paying for good food, but the one thing I hate is paying high price for bad food. $32 just for the steak. No sides included. Then was the salad for my 14 year old son, $13 for a piece of iceberg lettuce, and then charged me another $13 for a small piece of chicken cutlet on a plate to put in the salad, which didn't come out with the salad, he had to wait another 10 minutes after everybody got their meal, I guess they forgot. And then came the cake issue. My daughter bought a really expensive cake, which she gave to the host, instead of them cutting the cake vertically, like a normal cake, they cut it in half horizontally which ruined the cake. She was very upset. They didn't charge us for "cutting the cake". Seriously? Very disappointed. The staff was really nice, just bad food for the price. We will NOT be returning there anytime soon I Miss The Chart House and their black steamed bread and great food!!! read more
