One we have been to was closed for the holiday, understandably so. We happened upon Rouse's and so glad we did. The food was hot and fresh and delicious. The atmosphere was very traditional with a bit of vintage quirk. I had the bbq chicken with okra and onion rings. My husband had fried chicken with squash and fries. He was a tad disappointed that we were too early for a baked potato (they start serving those at 5). The chicken was fall off the bone delicious!! Our server Esli was quiet, very sweet and very attentive to our drinks and requests. Don't pass by without stopping at the little gem.

I recently took my mother to have an early lunch during the Sunday buffet on New Year's Eve. She can't stop talking about it. It is a wonderful value for $15.99 a person AYCE. My favorite menu items are the fried chicken, hamburger steak, sweet potatoes, turnip greens, squash, Lima beans, hush puppies & fried fish. The options are plentiful. You should plan to arrive early. It was crowded but the staff kept things replenished in a timely manner with wonderful friendly service. The dining room is very vintage and traditional. I loved the Christmas decor, real wood burning fireplace, and the deer in Santa hats. The restaurant staff provide excellent southern hospitality. I can't wait to come again or plan a family dinner in the event room.

Kim, our very delightful and great waitress told us they have them on the weekends. So, we will definitely have to come back on a weekend. We loved the atmosphere, saw other repeat customers and got to know several of the friendly, on-the-ball servers. The buffet food offered country-cooking foods with a variety of selections.  We liked the atmosphere and food so much that we drove about 2 hours round trip to just eat at The Hitchin Post. We took a break for several months then recently returned to learn that there was a new owner. We didn't recognize any of the staff. We were told by our server that the owners were making some positive changes. OK, we thought, we will give it a chance.   Today we arrived on Sunday again and we were so disappointed. First off, the music was blaring (saying a lot coming from a person with a hearing loss!) with pop music which is disconcerting in a western-themed, country restaurant. We nicely mentioned the loud music to our server but nothing was done.  And, no I am not some ornery codger who hates contemporary music.  But who the heck wants their eardrums punctured early on Sunday morning?  The Hitchin Post is usually busy on Sundays at this time, but there were few customers today. I would not be surprised if other regulars are unhappy also.  The fried chicken, cornbread, rolls are still good. Overall, the food quality has also gone downhill - definitely not enough vegetable choices.   Plus, no one should ever mix butterbeans and corn together.  My gosh, the cake slices are so small, close to paper-thin and not tasty to boot. Sadly, we won't be returning. I hope the new owners can turn this around before they lose more regulars.

One half feels historic and the other half feels modern with the artwork, mirrors, and finishes. The lighting is dim but you can still read the menu. It wasn't busy while I was there but quiet enough I couldn't hear other conversations. Initially the host wanted to seat me at the bar but when I declined, gave me a seat near the open kitchen. My waitress was friendly and helped me select the strawberry blonde to go with the strawberry salad. This was smaller than expected and just one or two strawberries. There was a little too much dressing for my taste as I forgot to order it on the side. I did like how the flavors came together. I also had the chocolate torte which was rich and decadent. I left here a little squeamish from what I witnessed. After all, I was seated at a booth table with a full view of the open kitchen. I noticed the food runner repeatedly touching his nose then the plates of food. I watched him reset a table and was touching the silverware by the tines, the part that goes in your mouth, rather than the handles. I'm not sure if the hands had been washed when he added by hand garnish to my dessert. I immediately removed the garnish but should have returned the dish to get it remade. Also, a table of six was seated then left a few minutes later and the glasses and silverware were not replaced while I was there, leaving me to assume they were not replaced for the next guests. I also noticed the restaurant had many cameras, so these hygiene lapses were likely recorded. For an upscale spot, these hygiene issues were disappointing. I truly enjoyed the flavors and the atmosphere, and I would be happy to return in the future if I could be confident that basic hygiene and service protocols were being strictly followed. I'd particularly love to come back and try the strawberry cake next time.
