We have been loyal customers for about 12 years, usually regularly going early on Sundays for the buffet lunch. We loved the atmosphere, saw other repeat customers and got to know several of the friendly, on-the-ball servers. The buffet food offered country-cooking foods with a variety of selections.  We liked the atmosphere and food so much that we drove about 2 hours round trip to just eat at The Hitchin Post. We took a break for several months then recently returned to learn that there was a new owner. We didn't recognize any of the staff. We were told by our server that the owners were making some positive changes. OK, we thought, we will give it a chance.   Today we arrived on Sunday again and we were so disappointed. First off, the music was blaring (saying a lot coming from a person with a hearing loss!) with pop music which is disconcerting in a western-themed, country restaurant. We nicely mentioned the loud music to our server but nothing was done.  And, no I am not some ornery codger who hates contemporary music.  But who the heck wants their eardrums punctured early on Sunday morning?  The Hitchin Post is usually busy on Sundays at this time, but there were few customers today. I would not be surprised if other regulars are unhappy also.  The fried chicken, cornbread, rolls are still good. Overall, the food quality has also gone downhill - definitely not enough vegetable choices.   Plus, no one should ever mix butterbeans and corn together.  My gosh, the cake slices are so small, close to paper-thin and not tasty to boot. Sadly, we won't be returning. I hope the new owners can turn this around before they lose more regulars. read more

This place definitely was under-reviewed and deserves lots more photos and great reviews. The buffet serves delicious soul food, variety of great plates , salad bar, and yummy homemade deserts! We were on the way back home from OBX to up North and would definitely come back if we ever get the chance to. Service was great the waitresses were very attentive. read more

Traveling in town & thought I'd stop to grab a quick dinner. They have a dinner buffet & was pretty busy. Vibe is like an old barn/ saloon. The food at the buffet was just ok. Fried chicken & fried fish was mediocre. Veggies were mostly canned or frozen. If you're looking for a quick bite & large quantities, then the Hitchin' Post may fill that need but be aware that the hours are erratic. read more

People should know this restaurant has limited hours and days of availability, so always check ahead. We happen to go on a Sunday where the only options were the salad bar at $10.99 and the buffet with the salad bar for $17.99. In my opinion, they were both overpriced for the options available. Take them both down by a couple of dollars it might be fair pricing to culinary items. The salad bar was adequate with options and yet limited to what you would get at Jason's Deli. Many of the items on the buffet were OK but not items I would want to come back and have again- with the exception of the trout and the fried chicken. The service was good. Drink cups were not down even to half a cup before refills came. The wait staff are sweet. I am saying I just paid $92 for four adults to eat we're one of us left satisfied and none of us wanting to return. Let me add, they had a nice stream of people coming in after church to eat there so it's a good match for some people. It was just not a good match for our group. I have no idea about the weekday menu and that may be a complete game changer. read more

Service was great, Kim was our server. We stopped for lunch on Saturday. Buffet only. Great salad bar, offerings were plenty. Main buffet had assorted chicken and fish, country beef and all the sides. I tried one of the baked chicken dishes, chicken a bit dry, green beans were good, hush puppies were excellent. The bbq chicken was also dry but the country style beef strips was best. Desserts were blueberry cobbler, needed whip cream and peach cobbler both were good. I have been eyeballing the restaurant for a few months, but the hours seem scattered so I haven't been able to get in to try it. Finally did on a Sunday, it was meh - the fried cabbage in the buffet was good, the sweet meatballs were good - that was about it, but for 17.99 I'd like to eat and enjoy more that cabbage and meatballs. I HIGHLY recommend eating here! This is one of the best restaurants we have ever ate at!! We live six hours away and were in town to see our grandkids for Christmas. We stopped in not knowing anything about this place and I'm certainly glad we did. The food was FANTASTIC and even though they were closing, they still cooked our food and were extremely nice about it. They kept apologizing about cleaning up even though it was closing time. I have never had better service at any restaurant I've ever ate at. Also, the food was very reasonably priced as well. Everyone that works there are all very nice. Food is good. Buffet is delicious. Lunch sometimes doesn't offer cooked food from the back only buffet. Service is always fine. My only complaint is they lock the doors super early before closing at night. It kinda makes you feel unwanted. read more

I have to admit that over the years I've grown to be very picky about chowders. I've tried lots of different types of chowder from Florida up through Maine, and without a doubt, the Hitch'n Post's 'Clear Rhode Island Chowder' ranks as some of the very best I've ever tasted. It's worth going way out of your way to get, and if you don't try anything else on their menu, try their clear chowder, and you will see why I call the Hitch'n Post a chowder destination! read more

The food was very good, I got the steak wrap, my husband got the burger and the kids all got chicken tenders and broccoli. The staff was incredibly nice. Very quick and friendly service. We just moved to the area and wanted to try a local place and will definitely be coming back to try the buffet. read more

Very casual restaurant but the food is excellent. Wife and I were travel and stopped overnight at the Hampton Inn in Williamston. Asked the front desk clerk for a restaurant recommendation and without hesitation suggested The Hitch'n Post. Before going I checked yelp and tried to go to their website which wasn't working. We figured we would give it a try anyway. Happy we did. The server was pleasant. We both ordered the seafood platter. We first received a generous size salad. Dressing was adequate. The seafood platter was great. Good size portions, fish was cooked perfectly and everything tasted fresh. We would return if ever in town again. read more

My first pure try of Southern cuisine but not sure what I'd like. A buffet is a good choice. We came in during the dinner rush. The restaurant is large and busy. Ladies in the front showed us to our table quickly. We saw the line to the buffet table on the way, a good sign. I picked small amounts of everything first. I like: chicken, mash potatoes, pineapple casserole, the green bean casserole. Not liked the collard greens. The dessert table was sparse and disappointing. The friend chicken and mash potatoes were the best choices. I can see why southern fried chicken is so popular. Service was nice and quick. Place get full during lunch and dinner rush. The people were nice but the food was mid. I ordered to go a 2 Seafood Combination and a 3 seafood combination with Cole slaw and Red Mashed Potatoes and Cole Slaw and Baked Sweet Potato and a side of Macaroni & Cheese. The only things that was really good were the Baked Sweet Potato and the Red Skin Mashed Potatoes. They only gave 1 piece of fish with each combo which didn't taste so great and approximately 10 small salty shrimp, I didn't bother asking my wife how her scallops were. The Macaroni and cheese was creamy and didn't taste like it had any seasoning at all, not even salt. They were very busy though so people do like the restaurant but we were very disappointed with our meals. read more

It's been four years since my review, Time for an update! Went here for lunch while staying in Williamston. I had the lunch buffet which includes the salad bar. The Salad Bar had a very good variety - much better than the average "local" restaurant. The buffet had eastern NC style barbecue, fried chicken, and seafood with several vegetables. My only concern is that the pans of food are not labeled. They had a couple of large pans of food that had a melted cheese topping but I couldn't determine what the food was under it. Had some delicious spiced baked apple slices - which I thought were boiled potatoes based on the color and texture and their location next to the pan of barbecue. They had a nice variety of desserts that was nicely displayed on another table. price was reasonable for the meal. read more

The food was not great (fresh but lacks taste/flavor) and apparently the customer service is absent. The ambiance leaves much to be desired. It is a restaurant that people tend to got to by default due to its location (centered around smaller towns). You don't have a lot of choices for large groups when traveling through Williamston. Next time I will wait to eat at the next town and I strongly suggest you do too. read more

We were there on a Wednesday night. This place was not overly busy just enough to keep the staff working study. Were seated quickly and a friendly and efficient young lady proceed to get our drinks and order. The order came out and everything was correct with generous portions. We cleaned our plates. What more to like than fair prices, great service, quick service. Not rushed but efficiently done. Will go again. read more

This time I got a rib eye dinner to go I was disappointed that the side salad was tiny. The green beans were mushy and flavorless. That was also a small serving However if you like yeast rolls... We go to a lot of country buffets and restaurants in the south. This is one of the better ones we have been to. Lots of really good food. Excellent service. Highlights include sweet mustard pork chops and sweet potato soufflé. Will go back every time we have to be out this way. Also it's right off the highway. read more

Went to the Hitch'n Post this past week for the first time. I have to admit that I was a little hesitant on being excited about this place. I mean, the Hitch'n Post is a name that did not resonate great food items, but I was told it was a must so I agreed. First, the staff could not have been more hospitable and awesome! We were taken care of the entire time, and as if we were the only customers in the restaurant- even though it was super busy! They had a general menu that I didn't even look at because I was told the buffet had a huge selection and was wonderful. Smarty Shannon, I went for the buffet and was pleasantly surprised. Not only did they have a very large buffet with lots of options, the salad bar had so many fresh veggie options, I almost filled up on that alone. They also had a mean corn pudding (tying with my grandma's recipe-shhhh, don't tell her I said that), homemade mashed potatoes, and green beans that were so flavorful, it could have been a meal in itself. Next time I am in Williamston, I will definitely visit Hitch'n Post. Williamston doesn't have much to offer with restaurants, so it is nice to know that the one and only option, other than fast food, is something this good! read more
