Clearly the stylist was not a loctician...she sucked because she knew she didnt know what she was doing. Needless to say Angie the stylist said she didnt like it. She said let me make it up to you. This review is long overdue due to the fact that I've been going to this salon for more than two years. This salon is fabulous. For a woman of color I can get the best of both worlds. Stylist are exercised in doing both natural styles and treated styles as I've gone to this salon for both of my phases. Point #1: the salon is clean. Sam is an educated and welcoming receptionist. No matter if your getting dreads or coming for a weave, she will make sure to give you the right information. Phones are always picked up and it is a breeze to schedule appointments. Point 2: affordable. As a woman who's tried a bunch of these new trendy natural salons, I've gotten some of the same results (or even better) at this salon. I've experienced some ridiculous prices (I.e 100 bucks for a rod set...girl bye) Here it is approximately half the price. I'd rather get more bang for my buck than pay huge prices at trendy salons. I visited the salon on Saturday, 10/10 after making an appointment earlier in the week for a full set of Tammy Taylor nails with Nikesha. I had been searching for a certified Tammy Taylor nail tech forever and finally got a number from the company that brought me to Hair Studio 1724. The first thing that pleased me was the security door. It's good to know that no one can just walk into the salon unannounced, you have to be buzzed in. Once you're in, you feel a sense of upscale-ness (i know it's not a word) because the salon is neat and tidy, and the decor is modern and well designed. The staff I encountered were all friendly and accommodating. The banter was light and fun - no gossiping or cursing which can be a real turn off sometimes. We laughed and talked about the great soul music that was playing, and all in all I enjoyed my time with the ladies. So about my nails...I wanted a full set of pink and white sculptured extensions and I got exactly what I asked for. I told Nikesha that i wanted my nail bed extended to make my hands look longer and more feminine. I also wanted a slight curve to them and she provided. She took her time and made sure that my requests were granted, and i could also tell that she takes great pride in her work. She was easy to talk to and I'm happy to say she's my new nail tech. I had to drive a great distance to get to her (from the Bronx to Brooklyn), but I'm happy with my nails, so the trip is worth it. Once you find that person that knows how to take care of you, you cant stay away! If youre contemplating a visit to this salon, I highly recommend it. My first impression was much greater than I expected and I'm looking forward to exploring more of their services in the future. I've been here a few times now so I can give a pretty good review of this salon. I come here for a press and trim. I have natural hair so I good salon and stylist is hard to find. I see Joan when I come. Every time I come my hair is done very well. I have absolutely no complaints. I always get compliments. She is very consciousness when doing the trim. I have been to salons that go crazy once they get a pair of scissors and you wind up with a haircut instead of a trim. Staff and owner are very friendly The do take appointments but they also take walk ins. So this means you could have made your appointment a week ago for 11am and then someone can walk in 10:30am then when you arrive you are waiting for an hour before you get serviced. This has happened to me a couple of times and it is frustrating. Just walking in doesn't work that well either. What does work is calling the day of and asking if your stylist is free or busy and make an appointment based on the current flow of the salon. read more

RUN! RUN! And never look back. CON ARTISTS! I came across this hair salon early one morning. It was the only salon opened that accepted credit cards. I met with Angela (Angie) - a Jamaican lady. She was super nice. I told her I was there to get my hair Washed & Blown out as well as get my split ends Trimmed. The price on the wall stated: "wash & blow out - $25" ... Now, I did not see any price for hair trimming and Angie did not bother to tell me the price, but I assumed it couldn't be no more than $10 since I am only trimming my ends, NOT cutting off my hair. At the end, when I am ready to pay, Angie took my credit card and charged it. She did not provide a receipt for me to sign. She claimed the machine was out of receipt paper. Out of good faith, I trusted that she would not charge me more than $35 since she displayed such a friendly personality. My credit cards are linked to my phone. I always get a text message on my phone when my card is charged. However, I did not receive a text message. If I had, I would have said something before leaving the salon. When I got home, I had this gut feeling to check my credit account and I am so happy that I did. I was charged $65.41 for WASH & BLOW OUT! At first, I told myself it had to be a mistake. I decided to call Angie. She had given me her phone number before leaving the Salon. I told her that I was overcharged. She told me, it was no mistake. She explained that I was actually supposed to be charged over $100+ but she had given me a discount because of the holiday. She also explained that there is a 3% credit surcharge fee. Now, I don't know what other people normally pay for Wash & Blow out. But I've never had to pay over $40 with hair straighten and trimming included. My hair is natural, soft, no colors or treatments, etc... Many people are not aware of this but It is actually illegal in the state of New York to charge consumers with surcharges on credit card transactions. It is the merchant responsibility to pay those fees. This is why many stores tell consumers that they have to spend a certain amount of money in order to use their credit cards such as convenience stores, etc... I can honestly say that I was CONNED! Angie was persuasive and friendly, and she gave me one price then overcharged me. When confronted regarding the charge, she became rude and hostile over the phone. Looks are deceiving! But I will definitely have my credit card company despute the charge! I will report this company to the Better Business Bureau of NY as well as all other review sites. Beware of this hair salon!!! I found out about this salon from the website of a product line for a treatment I was interested in using. I called (more than once) to inquire about the treatment, appointment and most importantly the price. I got to my appointment and not only was Lola extremely welcoming and pleasant she and the other staff members made me feel like I had known them for years. Yes, they are pricey but I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for and you pay for what you get. The treatment that I received is normally pricey but it was actually the cheapest that I've found in the area. My first encounter was in July of 2015 and not only am I still a client, my mom is now one too! I'm grateful that I did not read the reviews prior to scheduling my appointment, they are a black owned business which is a plus for me and they will continue to have me and my mom as clients. Well the staff seems nice. I called for a walk in and was told a lady was coming in to braid my hair so I went to the shop, and I get there and she's doing someone else hair. Okay. So by the time she's ready I can only wash and straighten my hair. 40 bucks okay. You u don't get one hair dresser they switch around as you're getting it done. Well my hair is shoulder length and she trimmed it, not even an inch. I'm still trying to understand how I paid 75 bucks for this service. Reason because we washed and blow dried your hair with flat iron and trim service... What? On the service list it said 35 for wash and flatiron so .....how is it that I paid double and then some. My overall experiences were less than spectacular. I gave the place 2 stars for the following pros, but I'll more than likely never patron this place again and will definitely never recommend it to anyone. The pros are... 1. The shop is nice and clean. 2. Twist out/dread stylist (forgot her name) can do a style from a picture and does a fairly neat/tight job. The cons are... 1. They never start on time. What's the point of making an appointment if y'all have no intentions on honoring it?! I'm not talking 10/15 minutes late either. I'm talking more like 30 minutes to an hour. 2. The price quoted over the phone is always severely less than what I actually get charged in the shop. WAT? 3. The same twist out/dread stylist that I mentioned above can't seem to work without adding hair. My hair is long and thick enough to be braided/twisted without additional hair. She always pushes to add hair because she claims the style will last longer. That may be true, but then she goes on to add way too much and it's a pain to take out. I personally think it's a ploy so they can charge more for the style. 4. On my last visit, I made an appointment for two people with two different stylists so that we could get serviced at around the same time. Upon arrival, we were told that we'd have to get serviced by the same person which meant we were there all day. They should have called us beforehand to alert us to the change to see if we wanted to reschedule or something. #rudeandwrong As you can see, for me, the cons outweigh the pros, so I'm done with them. read more

The price seemed great so I went along and scheduled an appointment for 9:30 am thinking she will do a thorough consult day of. When I arrived at the salon there was only one stylist there washing her clients hair she had no idea that I was there for a scheduled appointment. I told her who I had the appointment with and she ask me to wait. She continued to attend to her client ignoring me not giving me any notification of where my stylist is. I waited until 10:30!! I have been coming here to get my hair done for a little while now and I am never disappointed. This time I tried the massage. It was awesome!!! I had not gotten a massage in a long time and this was well worth it!! Jamelah was sooo good she worked my body so well it can tell you stories. The spa is clean and quiet. Jamelah suggested some stretching exercises I can do to ease the tightness in my lower back, I will do them as well but also this will definitely be a monthly ritual! I have natural hair and went in to get a weave. My hair was over washed (5 repeats!!), and though I did not ask for my hair to be washed, I was charged on top of the price originally agreed upon. I haven't gone in for a weave for years but I never remembered them to be as painfully tight as it was bing done. Even after complaining that my head felt like it was splitting in half, se did not cut the threads that she tied in my braided unweaved head. Let me start by saying the salon is quite nice and clean and very modern all the equipment seem to be quite new. I walked in, I did not have an appointment; I came in for a wash and to add a pony tail. I waited about 45 minutes before the receptionist came over to tell me that somebody cant remember her name would be taking care of me; almost 2 hours later she came over washed my hair, let me just say the best part of my whole experience there was the wash, she could wash the hell out of your hair I was in heaven; it went downhill after that. She finally called me over to do my "pony tail" now I did not ask her to make me look like Beyonce; she could not even do a simple pony tail, she tried 3 times to pin a pony tail that I have had done a 100 times somewhere else off course. Another hair dresser had to intervene and pin in my pony tail and it was still a disaster because she pinned it in up after about an hour and styled my hair and made it look like I had a stupid crown on my head, lols, off course at the time this was no laughing matter. And then then she sprayed my hair with all kinds of spray to high heaven. After all is said and done, the receptionist is obviously right there watching me and at the same time looking in the mirror making sure her weave is on point, doesn't even apologize for the disaster with my hair; all she tells me is the price and tax not even, let me take something off for your bad experience at my salon. Since it was my first and obviously last time there. FIRE THE MASSEUSES!!!! I had a Groupon for two 60 min Swedish or relaxation massage and it was everything but that. I've had plenty of massages, from 30-90 and I am always relax and sometimes doze off. NOT THIS TIME!! this lady was so rough! Even my husband complained about her. I told her multiple times. It hurts and all she will say "just take long breath". "Inhale with your nose and exhale thru your mouth". Like really!!! I WAS UNCOMFORTABLE!! I couldn't relax one bit. What makes the experience even worse. Hours later my whole upper back hurt really bad. Like when u let someone that is not a masseuse give you a massage and it feels good but you suffer the consequences after. Like that!!! But I didn't enjoy it while she was doing it. I've been naturelle for over a year now so my weekly/monthly visits to the salon have been over for quite some time now. I really wanted to get my hair braided after rocking my 'fro for too long, so I was referred to this salon by a colleague. From the moment I saw it, I couldn't believe how stylish it was. The staff was friendly, the place was spic and span, and managed by strong African-American women. This salon is definitely a step up from most beauty salons that I've gone too. I absolutely loved the decor and how close knit the hairstylists are with their customers. I was waiting on one particular stylist so I wasn't too happy on the wait time before I even sat in her chair, but the finished product and her willingness to make sure that I was completely satisfied with my do, won me over. An added bonus are the emails I now receive thanking me for visiting, hoping I return soon for other services, and updates on deals and discounts. Brilliant! I had set up an appointment with them 2 days before.Their website insisted that no walks were allowed. On the day of I was running a little, so I gave them a courtesy call an hour before my scheduled appointed to let them know that I would be at most 1/2 hour late. I was told that it was okay and that I could still come in. I travelled from long island to brooklyn for this appointment. I had heard that this was a clean, and professional environment, I value these things a lot so the 2 hour trip would not have meant much to me. As I was arriving at the hair salon, with 10 mins to spare, I was informed that the hair stylist would not be available, that she would be leaving soon. I am not mad the hair stylist became unavailable, however when you decided not to grant me the same respect i granted you by not giving me a courtesy call prior to my arrival that is COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL. They had three hours to call and tell me that she would not be available, she knew that she would have to leave early before my arrival, yet nothing was said. Instead, they waited 10 minutes before the appointment to tell me. NOT A VERY GOOD WAY TO DO BUSINESS, especially in an area where hair salons are a dime a dozen. read more
