It was nice to cleanse the pate before our meal. We ordered the Hummus and Baba Ganoush. Both were tasty but not extraordinary. We ordered the Chicken Soltani. Both my colleague and I decided that this was some of the best Koobideh and Chicken Kebab we had had in a while. The rice was cooked to perfection and I am always a big fan of Grilled Tomatoes. Having not experienced authentic Turkish food before, the mention of authenticity made my group eager to give Cafe Istanbul a try. Ordering was painless and easy. There are entrees for individual meals and easy options for groups to share family-style, which we opted for. We ordered an appetizer platter with beef meatball, baba ganoush, hummus, and phyllo borek (ground beef with spices and onions inside a deep-fried phyllo wrapper). It was a bit odd that there were different amounts of each (2 meatball, 4 phyllo borek, and dollops of baba ganoush and hummus were only enough to get a small taste each) but it was balanced out by the portion size of the entree. For the entree, we opted for the mixed grill plate to share. It had chicken shish kebab, lamb kebab, adana kebab (ground lamb, pepper, and spices), grilled chicken wings, and chicken beyti (ground chicken and spices, grilled). This was served with rice and red cabbage on the side. Individually, each amount seemed small, but given that this plate was meant for two, we were still pleasantly full after polishing this off. Everything was well seasoned. The meat was juicy and perfectly cooked. I'd especially recommend the chicken beyti. The here service was swift and outstanding. We were quickly offered menus, waters, and utensils. Our waters were refilled quickly, and the kitchen took our request to plate the lamb separately in stride. The moment after my fork fell to the ground, a member of their serving staff swooped to fetch it (it was behind my chair) while another brought me a new one. It was a very well-rehearsed dance. Worth mentioning is also the fact that there were two separate groups dining that evening (a large family, and a group of friends) to celebrate a birthday. Taste was surprisingly better than the last time for whatever reason. I don't know if it is under new management or chef, but they have improved a lot when it comes to taste. Price is reasonable but I felt like portion sizes were small. I got the combo for an additional $4.99 & it came with fries & a drink. Size of fries was so small that I could literally count 10 pieces! Had I known it was going to be that small I would have ordered it separately as a side! The main reason I gave only 2-star rating is because of them applying sneaky charge without telling customers or asking for their permission when paying. If you look at the attached receipt, there is an extra charge of 1.5% under the name of "Convenience Fees." This extra charge is nowhere listed on the menu or anywhere for the customers to know beforehand. They think that no customers check their receipt & they can sneak in whatever charges they want. Unfortunately, this is true majority of the time. However, I have always asked and checked my receipt and this is how I found out. No explanation of what this "Convenience Fees" is for. How is this legal to not ask, tell, or advertise these extra fees to the customer & just charge it to them? How come I was not explained about this extra charge before paying & asked if I still want to continue with it or not? Is this because I paid with the credit card? Even with that, they should not charge like this. If extra charge is indeed because of the credit card, then just tell the customer as I may have paid with the cash. Think how many transactions they do daily & how many times have they done this illegal transactions & ripped off customers! Of course, extra 1.5% is not much for most of the customers, but for the business it does add up at the end of the day! I really don't care that this extra charge maybe going towards the vendor of the card processor, but why not advertise it clearly. How hard & difficult is it? What is going on & wrong with these businesses? This is really getting ridiculous & out of control! How is this even legal when you don't advertise these charges, don't tell customers about these charges, & then just charge without customer's permission & then just hand over the receipt as if nothing has happened! Some customers don't even ask for the receipt let aside checking their receipt to make sure they have been charged correctly. These businesses are taking full advantage of those types of customers & just cashing in. Again, how hard is it for the business to be honest, transparent & clearly advertise with a sign if there will be any type of additional charge on top of the menu price? If putting a signage is a problem, then how about training cashier & have them tell the customer clearly if they will be responsible for any additional charges. In my opinion, there should NOT be any additional charges, besides the applicable taxes, & all "hidden" charges should be added in the menu price or just clearly advertised. It is expensive for EVERYONE & not just for businesses. It is really not fair for these businesses to rip off customers with their hidden sneaky tactics like this! If it is because of taking credit cards, then just don't take it. Hopefully this business will pay attention to my review & fix this issue & will be transparent to the customers when it comes to payment. If not, then I will have no choice but to file a complaint with the applicable enforcement office(s) regarding these unauthorized charges. Businesses like these do make extra money in short amount of time with these hidden charges, but they don't realize how quickly others have failed & closed down when they were doing similar sneaky things.
