wow this place is tiny. I LOVE IT! I swear I am in the downstairs of my grandma's house. Very homey and great food. The bar takes up one side of the restaurant while the other half is pretty tight with tables. We came at a off time to enjoy dinner as a party of 4 and didn't have to wait. If you come on a weekend I would suggest planing on getting there earlier than when you want. read more

Great, old school funky vibe...tasty food...but I gotta say, not as over the top amazing as Guy Fieri (Diners, Drive Ins and Dives)always makes it seem. Don't get me wrong, if I lived locally this would probably be a regular stop, but after almost a week of eating in a different restaurant for both lunch and dinner every day, I was ready to have my fat kid socks knocked off and it just didn't happen. I did like the old school dark, neighborhood vibe this place had. The staff seemed to know many of the regulars, and the bar looked like a nice place to have sat as well. The menu has a German flare, and the house specialty onion loaf looked amazing, although we did not order it. I had the signature "Inside Out Burger" on the house dark rye. The pleasant dark brown sliced bread was a nice change from a regular old bun....but it was not a wise choice for a juicy stuffed burger and it quickly became soggy and no help at all in holding on to the great sandwich. We also had the homemade apple pie with cinnamon ice cream, very good...and the bread pudding with the toffee sauce...both fantastic and leaving us on near food coma on our drive back to the hotel. read more

I used to come here all the time when I lived in the area. It's still the same cozy joint with good eats. The onion loaf was great. Could have used a little more time in the frier. The only good hackneys left. Lake Zurich uses meat they've left out, lake street is just plain dirty and downtown is hit or miss on service. This place has held the test of time and the outdoor seating in the summer is classic Glenview thoroughfare! read more

So my girlfriend flew back from California for a couple of days (she's there for work). She looked up this place and thought it would be a good try. Driving up there wasn't bad but the parking situation was stressful, especially if you go on the weekend. We had to wait 45min but well worth the wait. The restaurant is hidden in a cozy little neighborhood where everyone is riding their bikes and trees are so lush with color. As we sat down our waitress came and gave us the specials. Funny thing, I actually met her at my job when I use to be a manager at DSW . So that was nice, she was very good making sure our food was up to par. I had the famous hamburger with Swiss cheese and my girlfriend had the crab sandwich. The burger was amazing, very moist and full of flavor. My girlfriend on the other hand did not like her crab sandwich. She said it taste like imitation crab and had a weird taste. My advice would be to use Fresh crab. My girlfriend is Asian so she knows her crab . I would recommend this to anyone who wants to have a nice hamburger. read more

This is a great place to go for a good burger and an onion brick. I personally always stick to the grilled cheese but everyone else I go with always gets the Hackney Burger and they are always very pleased. Also, you get a huge plate of really good fries for the table, and their coleslaw is delicious. Any place known for its meat burgers that can get special vegetarian requests 100% correct deserves 10 stars in my book. I ordered a black bean burger prepared like the pretzel burger, with swiss cheese, grilled onions and a pretzel roll. And that's exactly how it arrived! It was excellent, and I can't wait to return. The preferred Chicago area Hackney's location. The outdoor patio is a great spot when the weather is warm. They still have the same great onion loaf you remember as a kid, and the burger selection has only gotten better. So I finally made it here for the first time and I had the 2 staples, the Hackney Burger and the fried onion loaf thing. The onion loaf was OK, it was really greasy and did not have much flavor. The burger was big and nice and juicy, but also really did not have much flavor. The fries were the best part of the meal, nice and crispy and not too greasy. We sat outside so I can't speak for the atmosphere inside, but the patio was pretty nice and the service was good. 3 of us split the medium onion loaf and I had an iced tea and with tip it was $18. I don't really get why so many people love this place. I've had much better onion rings and burgers for much less. read more

This place used to be THE place to get a burger. Stopped in today and got some tall male server that was not happy to be there. Soda was $3.50 each and the bathrooms smelled worse than a horse barn. This is the worst dining experience I have ever had. The water glasses all had old lipstick stains on them! Then a fresh set straight out of the dishwater were brought out and they had food caked on them. Plus we waited for our drinks for over 20 minutes. It's been years since I came here and decided to come back yesterday. They haven't changed a bit since the last time which was maybe 10 years ago. I love the patio seating. The food is excellent. Gotta get the onion brick. Get the half brick for 4 people. It's enough especially if you have ordered other appetizers. A 70 year-old, family owned and operated local business, yes please! This place is a total throwback from the long mahogany bar to the no nonsense service. In the winter it is limited to the main restaurant that cozily holds about 100 people. It's fair to say that most of those 100 are on a first name basis with the staff but newcomers get the same familiar service. Summer is prime time here. They have an outdoor patio that holds three times as many people as the inside. On a Friday night, the wait can be up to an hour but it goes quickly with the help of a variety of imports on draft, I always get a Steigl from Austria. DO NOT SIT BY THE PLAYHOUSE!!! If you are looking for a kid free dinner ask to be seated away from the playhouse that is always full of kids. On the other hand, if you have kids, by all means, tear it up. They appear to be having a blast. For food, definitely get the onion loaf. It's deep-fried and unhealthy but really tasty and quite unique as far as onion rings go. Entrees, the Hackney Burger is tops. I prefer it to all of the new burgers they've been adding to the menu to reach the masses. Stick to The Original with cheddar cheese. The dark rye is what they recommend but I always get the bun. Both are fresh baked at Hackney's on Lake down the street. If you don't want a burger, they have an amazing cold turkey sandwich. They actually roast a turkey and slice it. It's like Thanksgiving! I make it a club and add bacon, also on fresh baked bread. Sometimes I get a French Dip with provolone and sauteed mushrooms, YUM!! Over all, the place is a lot of fun and the kind of spot I like taking people to. People are always impressed and ask how I know about this place. It pains me to only be able to give Hackney's three stars. Maybe it's that what was fantastic as a kid doesn't measure up, but it seems more likely that the cost of operating the place got too high and they had to take some shortcuts on the food quality. I've been coming here since 1966, and paying for my own meals here since probably 1985. I've moved away from the area, so now only make it there 2-3 times a year. The burger is still very tasty. But it's certainly smaller than it was in the 70s, 80s, and early 90. If I had to guess, I'd say 25% smaller. The onion rings are good, but what used to be a half order is now a full order. The french fries have gone to Sysco commissary hell. But the rye bread is still outstanding, and eating at the bar on a lazy Saturday summer afternoon watching a baseball game is still a blast. And friends of mine who have had the fish on Fridays think highly of it. So if I want the experience, I make my way up there. But if I just want a burger, I'll probably go to someplace like Paradise Pup instead. I prefer the original Harms location to the Lake location, mostly because it's a little more consistent and cozy when they're busy. I really don't like any of the other locations, there is a noticeable drop-off in quality. read more

Wow! What a great burger! I went for lunch today and had the Inside Out burger on dark rye bread.. Thats a 8 oz burger stuffed with cheddar cheese and bacon. It was so moist and full of flavor. They also give you lettuce, tomato, and onion on the side to build it yourself as well as cole slaw and french fries. Great burger, great service, great place! I'll be back! read more

After an afternoon art fair, me and my honey came upon Hackney's. We all know what they are famous for- their onion ring roll. As we waited for our outdoor table, the weather was great, we saw "most" tables had an onion roll on their table. As an aside, I was surprised their Milwaukee Ave location was closed. Well the franchise remains the same. Good, no very good burgers. Sorry, but I haven't diverted from what I know they serve well. We were seated promptly, drink orders taken, delivered, and asked if we could get the fried onion roll before our entree. Our wish was fulfilled. We did not go overboard as we wanted to leave room for our burgers. Big and extremely tasty, cooked to our request. What more can I say to end a beautiful Chicago summer afternoon. read more
