It always smells strange in the store but they have a wide range of ethnic and foreign fruits and vegetables and snacks. I Love strolling through the produce section and aisles to find new things to try or new ingredients to add to recipes. Everyone there is friendly but the store does seem a bit crowded whenever I go. It can be hard to navigate through the establishment without having to stand and wait for someone to move or having to excuse yourself often to squeeze by. I think they can benefit from a larger facility. The bakery is extremely enticing. The cakes are BEAUTIFUL... Almost too gorgeous to want to eat. Love this store! They have all the exotic fruits for cheap prices! Fresh produce and seafood. Meats are packed already. Sometimes the really cheap fruit need to be consumed within a few days because they are ripe. Great deal and still delicious. Free samples on the weekends! Sign up for their membership card and earn points each time you shop. 1000 points is $10 in store credit. Each month they will send you a coupon book for better discounts and the discounts are on things you would need or eat! Not useless stuff. All your Asian needs in one place! Fish are fresh, meats are priced reasonably. They sell household items such as chopsticks, rice cooker, heater, containers, brooms, etc. They even have a beauty section to get your Asian products from. They have a large produce section and probably the most well-organize and well maintained produce section compared to other Asian groceries. Their aisles could fit two carts side by side - it's not cramped. Their freezer section has a lot of different things. I always come here to get ice cream. I get the mochi and the ice cream on a stick, all green tea flavored. They are delicious, try them! They just recently (maybe 1-2 years) offered a membership card called Smart Savings Card. Han Ah Reum or H-mart as it is now named, pretty much sums up its' evolution through its' name. H-mart used to be geared more toward Korean only patrons, but as time went by 2 things started to happen; they began to open more stores and the patronage began to expand to just about every continent on the planet. Africans, South Americans, Eastern Europeans, and Asians of all types started coming in droves to by things they couldn't get at the local american corporate supermarket and the folks at H-mart did a smart thing.... they started bulking up on things that all these different folks liked, such as; tamarinds, okra, tortillas, mangos, etc. So, H-Mart is like a little UN of grocery shopping with a bunch of cheap fruits and veggies and various kinds of home made kim chi. It can get very crowded (annoyingly so), the parking lot is a train wreck, and the cleanliness isn't up to Trader Joe standards, but if you are looking for a little something that you can't get at the Giant (i.e. chicken feet) than this is the place for you. read more

Since we were in the neighborhood, we decided to check in to see how it compares to its other stores in VA. Availability of items are comparable to the HMart in Merrifield but the place is barftastic. Stay away from the seafood section if you care about nausea. This H-Mart is small compared to all the other ones around the country. However, don't be put off by the selection. They still offer a 90% of what the larger stores offer. I go here for most of my grocery shopping needs but still rely on American grocery stores for any sort of western needs like almond milk, ice cream, and bread. Nonetheless let's start with my favorite thing: their selection! They have a wide variety of: fresh produce, seafood, meats, Asian snacks, Asian canned foods, kimchi, ramens, Asian condiments, and etc. Other pros: Momo's Bakery Small food court (I love their Korean bbq wings, sweet and sticky.. yummy) Samples on weekends $1 for 1 point system. Can redeem for grocery credits Cons (not enough to keep me away): Can't look up phone number for points if you forgot your card Very busy on weekends Large Hispanic cheese selection, not American ones Super packed on weekends (I suggest you park a little farther so you don't get stuck in the jam) Overall this grocery store does a great job providing the neighborhood with a nice selection of non-western products to make tasty recipes. On the weekends when they hand out samples, some of the people do demonstrations but that's usually once a month at the beginning of the month. read more

The reason for the 3 stars is as follows: For the actual store and selection I give it 4 stars. For the service and my most recent experience, I give it 2 starts. This is a Korean grocer but they carry some Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai and other Asian staples. If I can't make it out to Great Wall then I'll come here. Overall, they have most of what I am usually looking for. But in terms of freshness, their seafood and produce can be a hit or miss. I do love coming here for kimchi and their other banchan choices. The only real downfall about this place & the reason why I gave them 3 stars versus 4 the SERVICE. Now mind you I am Asian and I understand Asian markets. The service is never amazing. However, I thought this was incredibly uncalled for: I was unable to find anyone that was available to answer my question which was extremely frustrating. When I asked a female employee, she directed me to ask someone in the fish section. So I continued to look for what I needed before having to ask someone. After attempting to locate the frozen Pollack Roe 4 times, I approached a male employee that worked in the seafood section. In a friendly demeanor and well mannered way I asked him where it may be located. I asked if he could just direct me in the right direction. He looked at me and turned around. I then asked him again, under the impression that maybe he did not hear me. He then refusing to look at me, yelled "I don't know! I don't know!" and shooed me away aggressively, literally an inch away from hitting my face. He then shoved me out of the way and went back to his cart that he was pushing. I then thought to myself he must really be having a bad day... and decided to let it go. I then saw him assist another woman in a very well mannered way immediately after me in English. He even took the time to escort her to the proper section she needed to be in. At that point, I would not let it go. The way that he addressed me was incredibly bizarre and uncalled for. I planned on speaking to the manager but fortunately for the employee he/she was out. I did grab a business card and do intend to call them about it. I know it won't do much, but no matter where you go service should be fair - at the minimum. I shouldn't have almost been hit in the face with an employee's fish/seafood smothered hand for no absolute reason. UGH. read more

If I could give it no stars, I would. A few observations: - The only produce I saw was badly bruised, wilted, and/or moldy. Not just old or a little tired looking - Moldy. - I have no problem with fresh mackerel or squid next to the paper towel aisle, but come on, at least cover that stuff. - I understand canned/bottled goods have a pretty long shelf life, but is it that hard to dust or clean every once in a while? - The mochi did look tasty, but why are they selling individually wrapped mochi that's unsealed/partially open? - I figured at least the frozen food section would be ok, but unfortunately I wasn't able to sample the frozen red bean popsicles because the box was stuck to the freezer shelf with its own oozing red bean goo. I've shopped at a lot of Asian markets in my time, but this place was not just an embarrassment to the H Mart brand, it was a disgusting health hazard. Not going back. Ever. read more

There wasn't as many options as the store in California. I was able to find a few items I wanted. I would like to explore the other Hmart's in the area! If you're looking for foods not usually found in the traditional supermarkets around here then H mart is perfect! My husband and I love to go there to find rare sauces, spices, and ingredients for some of our favorite recipes. The best part is that the prices are as great as the selection! Their seafood section is exceptionally fresh as well as the meats and produce selection that expand to a good part of the store. Now for the con; beware that said seafood section appears to give off a smell that permeates through the whole store. It can be debatable on whether customers take this as freshness for the seafood or a negative strike against the rest of the store. It also should be noted that the employees can appear to be standoffish and the same is true for other customers. I will be the first to say that I also don't require much from staff as long as I get the products I need. I will Never buy the "fresh" fish again. Two times I have gotten white fish, today it was cod, that is not expired according to the package (today still had 2 days to go), and it smells so strongly of ammonia when the package is opened that I almost gagged. This review is for Hmart and the awesome little food court inside! I like this Asian grocery store a lot. It is run by Koreans (I think) and caters largely to Korean and other South/East Asian tastes. They do have a good selection of Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Vietnamese foods, spices, etc, plus a few Indian spices. Their selection and prices on produce are, in general, awesome. They have tons of mushrooms, Asian green veggies, and a nice fish counter. Prices on everything are quite good. There is also a great food court (with reduced hours) inside the store; the portions are great and it's nice to get all the traditional Korean sides with the food. read more

food court: 4 stars actual grocery store: 3 stars the spicy beef stew was absolutely delicious and perfect comfort food on a cold winter day. they prefer you pay in cash and, if not, no worries, you just wait a few minutes for the counter person to go to a cash register and come back witha receipt. the seating area was completely empty when i was there which was in the afternoon around 3:30 or so the produce did not look very fresh, which was pretty surprising and it was not that cheap either. lots of people are commenting on how bad the parking is. tbh, i had no issues. like most super market plazas, i suspect , if you avoid going shopping when everyone else goes shopping , you should be fine. there's nothing amazingly odd about the parking lot here. my overall thoughts would be to only go for the food court. i really prefer gmart(grand mart) which has fresher produce and cheaper prices. read more

The produce is always fresh, as a great testament to ethnic food stores, you will always find this place packed, and with good food circulation. the lines are long, so be prepared with your Yelp! app, and it will go a little smoother. H Mart is as close you can get to the broad produce variety available on the West Coast. Fruits and vegetables are much cheaper here than Giant, Trader Joe's, etc. and of much better quality. Also, they have a great selection of fresh fish. The salmon fillet is always odorless and goes for about $7.50/lb. They have aisles dedicated to rice, Goya products, noodles, and inexpensive canned specialty items (bamboo shoots, lychee, baby corn, hearts of palm). read more

I'm a fan of H Mart but this location at Silver Spring is mediocre at best. The ready-to-eat and food court area is much smaller than other stores. The selection is not bad but everything is packed in tiny aisles. Service can be extremely unhelpful and unfriendly. Still, it's a reliable place if you're looking for Asian items/ingredients. I love this store. The first international supermarket I went to is Lotte because my mom had been going there for a while. But one day I was craving Korean melon (best melon ever) and Lotte did not have any so I googled the closest international supermarket, HMart ended up being very close. As soon as I got in, I was very impressed. The best selection of fruits and veggies!! And everything is so fresh and reasonably priced that this is my go to for any fresh produce, as well as seafood and meat. They even have beef tongue which in Russia is a delicatessen and it's impossible to find at Giant or Safeway. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. A wide variety of many different types of fruits and vegetables, including the really exotic. You do need to be wary when picking out fruit/vegetables as there are always a few over-ripe or in some cases (potatoes/onions) that are nearly rotten. The fish market is outstanding, alot of different fish and they will clean them whatever way you like. The prices recently seem to have crept up a bit and I have been overcharged for certain items. Though we prefer the SUPER H Mart in Fairfax, we're happy that this "mini" sized H Mart is close to our Silver Spring apartment. Like other reviewers have said, this location boasts an impressive fish selection, including some sashimi quality salmon, tuna and shrimp, which is great for making homemade sushi. Though smaller than their Super bigger brother in Fairfax, this store also has a nice selection of vegetables and fruits, along with a small Korean diner, where one can enjoy some classic Korean dishes before (or after) shopping. It is important to note, that due to Montgomery County law, this location also does sell beer or wine, which is unfortunate. Bottom line: If you don't have the opportunity to visit Super H in Fairfax, H Mart on Georgia Ave. is a decent alternative. read more

Having H-Mart in the neighborhood has revolutionized my cooking - we have stir-fry at least once a week now because of the cheap and delicious produce that H-Mart somehow always seems to have in stock. There's also a lot of fun frozen food - it's inspired me to try lots of new things! A downside is that I suspect they keep their prices low by limiting hiring - there are rarely people available to answer your questions. Also, this is a personal thing and not necessarily universal: I can't treat H-Mart as a one-stop shopping grocery - I usually have to go here and somewhere else to get everything I "need" (e.g. pretzels, certain kinds of bread, etc.). read more

Since Costco Wheaton opened, we started to drop by Hmart weekly. Recently I just found out how delicious the traditional Korean deserts are. There are tons of soy bean and red bean related products freshly hand made every day, and I am addicted to them now. Only discomfort is the narrow aisles in this store. This Korean supermarket is the closest thing to something like 99 Ranch Market out on the west coast. On weekends, it's ridiculously crowded but that's because produce is pretty cheap and you can find a lot of your Asian grocery staples here such as soy sauce and Sriracha (aka cock sauce, hehehe). Since it's a lot larger store it beats the selection in smaller places like Maxim, but still I find that there are many things that are cheaper at Maxim or certain brands that I'm used to that I can only find at Maxim. read more

H-Mart great produce for really low prices. The fish is all fresh and most times still alive in the store. If you like ethnic foods there's something here for you. I tried some of the kimchi and the Korean version of calamari. Loved it. Alot of the stuff they have in their pre-packaged area looks nasty to the average American. Me being a frequent viewer of Bizarre Foods I expanded outside of my comfort zone and I can happily say I have some new fav foods now. read more
