This is a great little grocery store specializing in mainly SE Asian groceries and I enjoy coming here when in town. Owner is a nice guy and always very helpful and chatty with his customers. Today I came in and saw fresh mango with chili available, so I picked up some. There was also papaya salad in the fridge, so I grabbed one of those too! The sliced mango with chili was $5.50 and the papaya salad was $7.95 and both were excellent! I also picked up some incense sticks, vermicelli, some Asian drinks including pennywort and Mr Brown coffee, preserved plums, and soy sauce. I was disappointed that no buffet style food was available and I guess they may not serve it on Sundays but hoping to try some next time I am back. They have a great selection of Asian condiments and seasonings, many of which you cannot find in H Mart or Great Wall, including a good selection of Indonesian seasonings and sambals, and the best selection of Vietnamese seasonings outside the Eden Center. Hung Phat Grocery One of the best asian grocery in my list, locally owned by a Vietnamnese. The aisles are well stocked and organized, some freezer items in freezer aisle along with fresh veggies. Some ingredients like fish sauce or certain brands of rice that you can only find here, nowhere else. I have had very little luck finding any kaffir lime leaves recently. I've gone to Hmart, and 99Ranch in Gaithersburg and Fairfax. I've checked Lotte. No luck. And then I looked up Thai grocer and of course Yelp suggested Hung Phat Grocery which I had no idea it existed till today. What a gem of a place! Talk about a hidden gem alright. It's right by Nava Thai, and across from Safeway and close to Wheaton Mall. I was thrilled to find frozen shaved coconut which is essential to create kerisik --a dry roasted shaved coconut. I haven't had very good luck finding them in the area but now I know where I can find them. They also carry Arroy-D Coconut milk, which in my opinion tastes better than other brands. It was less than $1.60 per can beating the price of $1.89 at 99Ranch Fairfax. I thought that was a steal too. They also have fresh Vietnamese noodles perfect to accompany homemade pho or making other noodle dishes like pad thai. All in all their selections of essentials to create Thai, Vietnamese, or Malay or Indonesian was phenomenal. Given the location it's in, it's normally not the easiest to find good parking much less FREE parking in front of the store. They've earned themselves a loyal customer today just with the ease of parking part! Perhaps some of the only complaints I have are how narrow and cramped the store inside is and how unfresh the keffir limes were. I mean I originally came in just to purchase some and all I got were $3 fistful of sad sad frozen brown leaves. I mean you put those leaves in curry dishes as aromatics and what's the damn point of it if it's so browned and stale? Next time, I'll know better and just skip it. Lastly, figuring out where to queue up for register is very confusing. Just a warning though! read more

This grocery is rad! I have been here several times and I have all the stuff that I need for my cuisine.

Great store. There are a lot of Thai and Vietnamese ingredients and foods you can't get at the big Korean grocery stores like Lotte and HMart. They have some prepared food that usually come in on Saturday around noon and it always pretty good. I really like their bubble tea also. The people who work there are nice and friendly. read more

I ran into this cute little grocery store while visiting Wheaton. It is walking distance from the Wheaton metro station, and so is pretty convenient. They also have their own parking, so you can skip the street parking. Hung Phat not only makes their own meals in the store, but also have a selection of bubble tea recipes. As a fruit milk tea hunter, I can verify how good their mango milk bubble tea recipe is! I was happy to have ran into this spot whilst craving some bubble tea. I also took a walk around the store and found a selection of Asian drinks, snacks, condiments, and some general groceries as well. Worth the visit! read more

Pro: specializing in Asian ingredients & food, friendly service/ staff. Con: small parking lot, meter parking. My family have been shopping at this store for Asian ingredients for years(20+) and the owner is a very nice man who get to know his customers. They also offer boba tea and have a food station. Anything you need from rice noodle, cha( viet pork) , Asian oil, banh mi, and more they got. The only down side for me is that the parking lot is small and lot of Asian people drive big cars so when they try to reverse out it a mess :( There is the option of meter parking on the street but the rate is so trash, for one quarter they only give you 12 minutes. Meter maid do go around looking and give tickets so be careful. All in all this store is great and help provide a benefit to the Asian community. read more

This is a neighborhood Asian grocery store that is small in size but huge in options. They have a hot food bar and everything that I have had is great, especially if you are looking for truly authentic home made style dishes. They also have great cafe su da and other boba drinks that are spot on. Their vegetable section is so fresh and very good quality. They even sell vegetable plant starts for your garden. The owners are so warm and friendly with good recommendations for good local eateries. I love going here. It is one of my favorite places in this area. read more

I'll just echo what others have said - if you're cooking southeast Asian food and can't find an ingredient at Hmart, come here, or just skip Hmart entirely and start here. As a Korean chain, Hmart understandably gives more attention to Korean and Chinese items, so it's probably unsurprising that the selection of Thai and Vietnamese items at Hung Phat is simply in a different league altogether. The owners have also been friendly and helpful on multiple occasions and despite some slight language barriers have always been incredibly patient as I try to explain what I'm looking for...despite not entirely knowing myself :) read more

I am a novice at shopping for Asian foods, but the friendly owner(?) at the register made me feel welcomed. I popped in to buy some eggs and browse. Of course, my eyes wondered towards the desserts near the register. If I didn't have a full bag of Oreos back at home (go ahead and laugh at me, I'm vanilla) I would have bought some sticky rice. I had take out from a nearby place, and I wanted to get home and dig in. They have a small lot that was heavily trafficked. My favorite Vietnamese-Thai grocery store in the DC area. It's too bad I have to settle on the Cho Saigon supermarket in Eden Center due to distance, because the finds at this joint are better. What makes Cho Saigon good is that all the places next door where you can pick up fresh this-or-that, freshly made tofu & soy milk, goodies, etc. But as standalone grocery stores, Hung Phat is where it's at. Super nice family-owned joint. Fresh Rice-noodle rolls and cut rice noodles (like, for char-kway-teow / pad ki mao/ beef chow fun). The Southeast Asian herbs they sell seem to be consistently be fresher than what I find at H Mart, and it's a little closer to me (I think they're growing them themselves.) I'm now sold on this grocery store when I'm making anything south of the China/Vietnam border. I did see signs for a few lunch curries, stews, etc. but didn't see anyone manning that station. If they do a khao kang sort of thing, I doubt I would be the only person interested in knowing the particulars. If you're into Thai curries that use khanom jin, I did see that they have guilin rice vermacelli in the back which to me has been the best substitute. read more

This is a small mom and pop asian grocery but it was clean and the selection quite large. The very nice owner was at the register and he was transparent and careful in calculating my purchase and provided helpful hints on how to reheat some of the fresh-refrigerated food items. Aside from offering a wide variety of hard-to-find items, the owner is the sweetest, most lovely person. Once he heard me coughing a little while I was shopping (pre-COVID times and I had just swallowed wrong), and he pressed some tea with honey on me to help my cough. Some of my favorite prepared items are the green papaya salad in the tubs in the fridge near the entrance and the fried bananas (with coconut in the batter). Also in the early spring they have Asian vegetable plants like malabar spinach and Thai basil. read more
