Sri Lankan cuisine is a niche. There is one restaurant in Northern Virginia, but other than that, you'd have to go a long way. This place is a very modest grocer that also offers buffet-style food to go. I arrived to be greeted by a fairly regular-looking American dude who explained to me that his wife is Sri Lankan and does all the cooking. The spread of fresh food was impressive. I got okra, green beans, stewed banana blossom, mango curry, and some kind of South Indian pickle. It was a colorful bowl and a dynamic array of flavors. And while I eat a ton of Indian restaurant food, I also get home-cooked meals in this idiom on occasion, and the food here definitely has that kind of taste. Tangy, spicy, but not overly oily. Having said that, I came hoping for some appetizers to go like samosas or vadas, which maybe they sometimes have but did not have much of when I arrived. Extremely disappointed with the customer service here, and shockingly, the rudeness comes directly from the OWNER herself. They rarely answer the phone, you can't leave a message, and when someone finally does pick up, you're immediately put on hold indefinitely. I called 24 hours in advance to cancel a small order I had placed the day before, as any responsible customer would. After three attempts with no voicemail option, the owner finally answered, only to put me on hold even after I clearly said I needed to cancel the order. Then, the next day, she called back just to berate me for not calling again! Absolutely no respect for the customer's time. How does that make sense? You have time to call and lecture a customer, but not to set up a voicemail, take messages properly, or learn basic customer service etiquette? This kind of unprofessional behavior might fly elsewhere-in an another part of the world. but not here. As a small business, you'd think they'd value and respect the few loyal customers they have. A fairly small grocery and limited supply store, but if you come here, you already know what you're coming here for. I was specifically coming here to get some rolls and fish cutlets. I can't get enough of them and when I get the cravings, I just go all out and buy a bunch. They only have food available to buy from Friday to Sunday. They have a buffet type offering on Saturday lunch too. Not too much seating, but I cannot think of another Sri Lankan place to visit in the immediate area so this place does supply a niche audience. The parking lot is pretty empty most of the day so I doubt you will have problems finding a spot. The people here are nice and friendly and I have not had any issues. read more

Also, ate another fish roll the last one of the six that we got and it it was just as good cold as it was hot and that's a huge compliment! When I was in Maryland this month I bought a bag of curry powder and a bag of chili powder here, because I had been wanting to try something from a Sri Lankan cookbook and we in Boston can't get the real spices here. (Though if anyone _does_ know where the real stuff is here, please let me know). Wow. Both may be the hottest spices I've ever tasted. And so much flavor. I cannot wait to start using them. They also have take out. I had a dinner engagement later that day so I couldn't get a full meal, but I did have a chicken roll. Delicious. The store has all the standard Indian subcontinent rice, beans, flour, et cetera. Not a big grocery, a small store in a strip mall, but they have what you need. If you're looking for a unique new cuisine to try, this lovely local Sri Lankan grocer will let you call in advance and order an authentic staple dish called Kottu Roti for carry out. We called on a Friday and asked for 5 chicken kottu rotis for dinner the next night and sure enough, they made them hot just for us. It's like a better version of fried rice, but with chopped buttery roti bread instead of rice (because "kottu" literally means "chopped"). I don't think you can get this dish anywhere else in the area. You can thank me later. Very grateful to the owners for accommodating our craving for a delicious Sri Lankan meal! read more

Excellent food especially their Patties (chicken, fish)! Beef rotti and other specials available over weekends really hit the spot. Always stock up on Patties, mutton and chicken lamprais, mutton or fish rolls and unique Sri Lankan groceries. Make sure to get cans of Ginger beer to pair with the yummy food. read more

OK, admittedly, I know nothing about Sri Lankan grocery stores, so all I can rate is my experience at this one. We decided to make a Sri Lankan dinner (the result of a college study abroad experience) and with recipe books in hand, headed out to the grocery store. It's small, similar to many other ethnic groceries that I've been in (except that EVERYTHING is labeled in English, which is kinda nice) and clearly frequented primarily by South Asians. Everything seemed pretty cheap (we mostly got spices) and it was well organized. The owner was positively delightful and they had 98% of the items on our list. Apparently they also sell homemade hoppers, rotti and the like, I assume later in the day, so we'll definitely be going back to check them out. read more

I absolutely adore Spice Lanka. A couple decades ago, I was a University Student at Peradeniya campus. Stepping inside I found premade (and the ingredients to make from scratch) appam, idiyappam, pittu, and many more along with many of my favorite snacks. I am excited to share some of my long lost favorite snacks and meals with wife. The proximity to a Brazilian store and H mart are an unexpected bonus as well. Add on top the kind and friendly gentleman who helped us and I am certain I won't be waiting so long to return and in likelihood will make sure it is during lunch because the fresh food was absolutely delicious as well. read more

Great hidden treasure, there are alot of Sri Lankan spices; for the novice (i.e. me) Indian-like spices. I know they are a separate nation (ha); but the spices are very simliar and they have a great selection, excellent prices and the folks in the store a very helpful and friendly. The selection of Sri Lanka spices is not to be beat. The store is clean and well-lit, the owner not particularly friendly. They have a brunch, which we did not try. All authentic looking. "Spice Lanka" stands for it's name. By now , I have tried almost all the food items there. Fresh food (cooked at the store) is always delicious-spicy and hot! Hot patties are my favorites. String Hoppers (Indiappa) also are always fresh (They have machines to make them) offered with mild "Kiri hodi" , coconut sambol and spicy fish curry. I like there almost complete South Asian stock of groceries. From curry powder to Nestomoalt and Horlicks! I , sure will go there many more times. read more

Not only can you find items not offered even in Indian stores who sell Sri Lankan items, but their ready made food is delicious!
