Sunday afternoon parking was NOT a b**, getting here from Silver Spring definitely was! They had fresh produce, a smattering of employees who spoke real English and gave me real directions. I got all I needed and then some more. I like they have a fairly well established section for home/ kitchen goods, which was a life saver as I moved to a new place this weekend. Rolling pin, anyone?! Docking off 2 stars for the miserly sad state of the Indian food aisle.. this was the worst I ever saw at another HMart or Lotte Plaza.. I am sure they can do better! I love this place cuz it has everything you need especially vegetables, they have a very big selection and variety of type of vegetables and leaves. One good thing is they check out lines are always fast and for the most part they are nice unlike so many places. The seafood area (to me) looks a little unsanitary but it doesnt mean its dirty. One weird this is that corner bakery which has nothing to do with HMART super market. We visited out of sheer curiosity and were pleasantly surprised that we were able to do a considerable amount of grocery shopping here, as well as find a few other things we didn't know we needed... and all for some pretty great prices. I love tea, and naturally there was an incredible variety to choose from. More than that, there was a huge section of kitchen and cooking supplies: Oversized pots big enough to give a baby a bubble bath in, tea pots and tea cups of all sizes, shapes and colors and the largest variety of chopsticks I have ever seen in my life! (which reminds me...I need some new ones to replace my set that had an unfortunate run-in with the dishwasher... I don't think I need to tell you who won that one). They had such a gorgeous array of colors and designs... a little something for everyone. I think I even saw a set of smaller, kiddie chop sticks. The seafood section looked like a small fish market and they were able to pack in a pretty substantial variety (given the space), including a few I'd never seen or heard of. They also sell seafood that you are not likely to find in your average American grocery store. (ex: conch, octopus). They even had some of it prepackaged or frozen, so you didn't have to wait in that long line. The produce section was probably the most delightful part of our visit. No standard apples and oranges here. Instead, think durians and a huge drum-like container brimming with lychees. The sign on the drum invited customers to try one, but for the life of us we couldn't figure out exactly "how". (I can almost hear all of the Asian Yelpers snickering and eye rolling at us right now!) And of course neither of us thought to Google it and save face... oh well. The biggest score was that both me and my boyfriend were able to leave with some hard-to-find treats that we both enjoy. For me, it was the mochi ice cream (in green tea, azuki bean AND mango flavors!). For him, it was strawberry Pocky cookie sticks. Even though we've just moved out of the neighborhood, we'd definitely go back if we were in the area. read more

There's not that many asian grocery stores in Silver Spring, MD or close to where I live! This place is about 3 miles from me, and it has all the asian produces/spices/snacks I need! The products is cheaper buy than the other chains nearby and it's decent. I am a big fan of kimchi, and this place has good kimchi. It's worth the buy! Where else can you get your asian produce? So glad it is here. I am coming back whenever I want to make some asian dishes or even if I want some fresh produce. I spend less money here on produce even if I get more food, it makes me happy! read more

I'm an H-Mart fan, but this branch is not that great. It is on the smaller side and is a bit cramped. It isn't a problem if you come at a non-peak time, but on a weekend afternoon? As a fun place to get groceries, this place is pretty stellar. I have no idea what half the packaged stuff is, but produce and meats and such are well-labeled or easy to figure out. The reason it gets three stars instead of four is actually a prepared food problem and one that could well present problems for people with allergies. I was hungry the first time I ran through with my sisters getting groceries and suchlike, so we stopped at the prepared food section and among a few other things, I grabbed some scallion pancakes to eat. The problem isn't that they were tasty, but that the ingredient list and the contents of the food not only didn't match, but didn't match in a rather glaring way. If they can forget to note that there's octopus [no really, very hard to miss the tentacles] in the scallion pancakes, what other ingredients are they not putting on the packaging? read more

This store is amazing. There is such a wide variety of food, produce and all things Korean. They have really reasonable prices as well as bulk products of all kinds. My first trip to H mart wound up being a two hour journey of wandering around picking out strange and exotic foods. My favorite find of the day? Not the best but not the worst HMart around. It might be the one most convenient to DC, and compared to the other Asian markets near the District that might be closer, this one is the best choice. They often have samples of veggies and tofu on the weekends. The vegetables are traditional Western fare as well as the to be expected collection of Asian veggies for leaves, roots and seasonings. The prices here are comparable to other markets, but the selection is more exciting! As for staples, if you thought you were looking for some Asian noodles, this is your place! They have fresh rice, tofu, and wheat based noodles. They also have the dried noodles for longer shelf life. Pad Thai, vermicelli, soba, udon, ramen, soup noodles, lo mein, chow mein, egg noodles, starch mung bean and sweet potato noodles- best selection near DC! As for other items, you might be better off looking elsewhere like the American brands. Though, if you are looking for kitchen wares, fab choices here, too for chopsticks and rice bowls! read more

It's great to have this grocery store so close to home. Every exotic ingredient you could want, but the Hispanics working the floor may not speak English, and they probably can't help you find that one odd Thai ingredient if they do. Also, the Anglo aisle is going to fall short if you're looking for, say, paprika. But wow, more bean sprouts than you can shake a stick at, more seaweed choices than you can believe, and great kitchen items suitable for gifts and whatnot. Bonus: $500 rice cookers. The parking lot is pure misery, otherwise I'd give this place 5 stars. I park in Popeyes and walk across the street to avoid being trapped in the door-ding central H Mart lot. read more

I like this store. H-Mart moved into the old A&P location which was here as recently as the 1980s. Not much physically has changed in 40+ years. It would be nice to rebuild this entire shopping center at some point. This store could easily be much bigger. Food is going up in price everywhere, it pays to shop around. I am so happy to see that there is an H mart here after serendipitously finding it while visiting the area in search for tupperware! As a short term resident in Maryland and having frequented H Mart in California and also in Illinois, I must admit-- this H mart has the most diversity in terms of clientele and staff. (Sidenote: It is so great that diversity is embraced here! Some may even forget that this is a Korean chainmarket!) Regardless-- I enjoy the banchan (Korean side dishes) and the Asian produce as well. The produce doesn't always look fresh, but I shouldn't gripe about it since these markets appear far and few. This H Mart is one of the smallest I have been to. The food selection is small. The food court is small. However, the taste was a big deal. I ordered the Galbi Tang and the Sulun Tang. They were both oh so delicious! I was not expecting that but it was definitely better than the H Marts in Philadelphia. read more

When asked about the difference, customer service staff shrugged it off and said "the ad is a mistake." Best Asian and Latin American grocery in town. As Indonesian who moved here few years ago, this place is my life saver. It carries a lot of spices, spicy chilies and fruits and vegetables that I can't really get in regular American grocery store. They have fresh rambutan fruit (I don't know what is rambutan fruit in English, so please google it yourself. It's basically a fruit that has 'hair'), fresh longan, long beans, good homemade noodles, salty fermented duck eggs and many other more. In some chain, they even carry Asian beers and sake. The one in Virginia has a small restaurant where you can order hot Korean food with super affordable price. I also like how they sell fresh fish and seafood. It feels like you are back to asia and buy fresh fish from the market. read more

Fresh seafood, meats and produce! Large variety of seafood- much more selection than the average Giant, Safeway and some are actually alive!! Nice and fresh cuts of meat. The place to go with pre cut meats for those home versions of korean bbq, hot pot, etc. Huge selections of American and Asians fruits and vegetables. Most thing are cheaper than Giant, Safeway. Also has a tiny kitchen within the store that makes prepared foods like fried chicken, dumplings, Gimbap, rice cake, etc. The only thing lacking with H Mart compared to Safeway/Giant is the decor, customer service and no bakery. read more

Sometime in April or late March, the girl in the bakery section (to the left just by the entrance) was clipping her nails! How do you clip your nails around food, in a place of business?! I was appalled to say the least. Other than that, I get everything I need here. The people at the check out are polite. I have had positive experiences here. However, I hate that you cannot take the cart to the parking lot. Everyone has to offload their bags in the small enclosed entrance. With COVID19, it is less than ideal to have everyone squashed up trying to remove their bags. read more

This is a smaller Hmart so it doesn't have as much variety as a bigger Asian market. Occasionally on weekdays, the produce is not as fresh. But it is the closest Asian market near me and it is quite okay for picking up some vegetables, tofu, noodles and other essentials. read more

Love living so close to an H Mart. It's not as nice as some of the other locations but I can't really complain when a bunch of cilantro is $0.50, tofu is $1.19 and a package of mushrooms are under $2. I can't bring myself to buy any of these items at Giant or Safeway knowing I can get them so cheaply here. So, as a representative of the ABC ( american born chinese) career women with lots of student loans and still making car payments on a car that someone "BUMPed" the trunk of and who's living in Silver Spring, I will go ahead and comment on H-Mart in comparison to the other asian marts in the area.... what's the 3 stars for?? ( if anyone has been to an asian supermarket, you would see that it's definitely not the trader joe's or giant's you're used to..) well, i give it one star for each of the 3 categories of shoppers below.. which ever you fall in, you will most likely give the 'star rating' next to it.. CHEAPSKATES: (will give H mart 4 stars) cheapskates are like me... who don't care what the supermarket looks like, but as long as it has mostly everything you need for cheap, and of decent quality you will just ignore the fact that you haveta watch out for squished grapes in the produce section, ignore the smell from the fish section, don't mind that there are live eels in a tank somewhere, and spend the time browsing for your needed product (because you can't read korean, and you dunno how to distinguish from the million types of sushi seaweed they have) ... cheapskates, this place sells most, if not all, of their produce for half the price of giant and traders.. you will find all things asian, latin, and a great assortment of meat including things you never thought you could eat.. but that's the beauty of it, if you ever wanted to see what it looks like, you get first hand experience here.. they still carry the regular condiments you may need like ketchup and mustard, and carry toilet paper and maxipads, but you just get one brand to choose from.. so take it or leave, and go to CVS. the cooked food section is great, and cheap ( futomaki rolls for 2.99.. and they have stir fry noodles, jap chae, for 2.99 as well) .. and if you're a kimchi fan , there's a million different kinds for you to eat.. not to mention they have this lil' bakery section too with some decent goodies nice on your wallet. THE GOURMET SHOPPER: ( 2 stars) the reason why the gourmet shopper will only give it two stars, is because 1) this place isn't the 'gourmet' type you might be used to, (you won't find the 50 different kinds of cheeses or crackers or spreads here..) 2) you will prolli find the untidiness of the store disturbing to your shopping experience ( yes.. that is a broken pineapple on the floor.. and whoops! careful, there are squished starwberries right next to it), and 3) you can't believe that some people eat some of the things that are in this store (don't ask.. just keep walking). ... however, if you're a gourmet shopper, and you're making a 5 course meal that has an asian or latin spin to it, you will find some of the more unusual spices and condiments that you can't find at a local supermarket.. not to mention that there are 5 or 6 different soy sauces, pastes, curry spices, and oyster sauces for you to choose from. Holy stinking flesh rot! The store smelled DISGUSTING yesterday!! As I walked in, the smell nearly knocked me onto my rear. You know, we could say that the weather is heating up, but what does that say about their preparedness? In the back, it smelled like a shark stomach all hot and gorged with seafood - yick! I actually like coming here because it's close and it's Asian, but never again will I go on a weekday during the evening rush. Really, it's the smell, but it's also the guy outside the store talking to himself and yelling, "Why do you think I got money? I don't have any money! THEY TOOK MY MONEY!! THEY TOOK MY MONEY!!" This area is a tad rough around the edges. Sketchy is also a good descriptive word. When I came here before, I was a Saturday night around 9pm. It was clean, it was quiet and it smelled like a Korean grocery store should. It's ok for Korean grocery stores to stink a little - you gotta cut them some slack because of all the odoriferous food they sell: kimchi, fresh fish, squid, garlic, etc. I like that they carry the best gourmet ramen here, Shin Ramen (Shin Ra Myun, really). What I didn't like was the pre-prepared ban chan....no self-respecting Korean food connoisseur would say that the Jinga brand ban chan is yummy - 'cause it is teh suxor. Never again. I would have considered getting some quick food at their Korean bar; they had a lot of good looking menu items (kalbi tang) but I couldn't bear to be in there much longer than I had to be. The bonuses of this store is their Asian food variety and everyday staples for the rest of the population that doesn't do Asian. Their prices aren't too bad either. If you want to find any type of fish or meat this is the place to go. You can get any part of a chicken or pig here. From the roota to the toota! We got fish, chicken, squid, shrimp head on, red bean buns, smelt, rock fish, fresh noodles, tofu and veggies. They also have precooked food so we got some bulgogi and kimchi soup. I've never been afraid to be "the pepper" in the spice jar. The food here is soooo fresh and the market is so well-kept. The signs are posted very clearly and the people there are pretty friendly, if you have a questionThere aren't too many strange odors and the place is really well-kept. My favorite part of the market is the meat! ::hehehe:: They have a section where they sell korean-style marinated meats and kim-chi style veggies. It is sooooo good! The meat is perfectly flavored. I pretend that I make it from scratch and bring it to all my friends' parties! They also have a restaurant/carryout near the entrance, where they cook food using their own products. I love that idea!!! I can eat something there and if I like it enough, can buy the ingredients. It can be intimidating, but you gotta jump in! No one is judging you. You want food, so shop! H Mart is an excellent place to shop for produce, and seafood. But shoppers beware - while their prices are very cheap, the store is always uber crowded. The parking lot is a death trap, and can easily turn into a horn-honking, fists flying gridlock. The staff at H Mart are extremely rude, and really don't seem to care much for "english speakers", whether you are Korean or not. I've been going to H Mart for years, but usually just to pick up some of their kimchee or some noodles or some sort of Asian seasoning. Recently though I started making my own kimchee. My husband loves it and so I found a recipe, and armed with my shopping list, I made a serious trip to pick up some of the ingredients needed. I bought two heads of Napa cabbage, scallions, fresh ginger, Korean radish, and disposable chop sticks. The bills was just under $8.00, far less expensive that what I paid for just Napa cabbage at the regular grocery store. My last trip to stock up I also got 6 limes for $1. I'm not a great bargain hunter but the produce is fresh and the price is right. So I think it's fun to make kimchee and I'm now a regular at H-Mart. read more

I like H. Shopping there is an adventure! I'm an avid Asian cook and H has got what you want! BUT... It can be iffy depending on when you go. I've been there over 20 times, regularly shopped at Maxims (switched to Kan Sam) in Rockville and H blows them both out for produce selection. When its fresh its fresh when its not its rot so you need to inspect what you are buying and sometimes pickings can be slim. This has only happened a few times. For Asian produce they have it all. Every imaginable variety of bok choy and mushroom. For Indian and Thai cooking they have fresh (!) galangal (if you never heard of it then that won't change your life) They had fresh tumeric, this was the only place I have seen this. They had holly Basil, lime kaffir leaves and curry leaves!! You won't find these or galangal in Whole Food. Now my girlfriend is a Whole Food snob, but.. she will tell you that H has the best fresh tarragon she has seen and that their herbs in general are better and MUCH cheaper than Whole Foods. Now to the scene! If you want high density roller derby style shopping come here on the weekend. It may discourage some. The parking lot on the weekend is very competitive. I'm surprised there aren't a lot of shootings. It is wheaton after all. Just kidding (maybe). The have end to end Asian groceries and a good selection of Latino fare thrown in. There fish department is extensive and looks good. The girlfriend doesn't trust it. It is cheap, extensive and looks good. Time will tell on this one. I could go on but must depart to eat! I like H, its fun to shop there and I have not yet been poisoned. read more

There's a bakery and food shop in the front, which I did not have time to try. Large selection of housewares, fresh seafood, and KBBQ meats, marinated or plain. Very nice selection of produce. I was able to find some gluten free gochujang (pepper paste), but only after reading the tiny English secondary label with a magnifying glass. GF soy sauce was prominantly labeled as such. Plenty of parking, but pretty busy - probably people stocking up for the impending snow. Prices seemed a bit higher than other Asian markets, but it's tough to get direct comparables. read more

Like a wonderland of exotic foods, many of which I have never tried before. Some of the products have no English on the packaging. Even more fun! Tried bulgogi beef, this amazing sticky brown rice from Japan, chinese broccoli, lettuce, dragon fruit, baby bok choy tips, miso paste. Only thing I didn't like was the dragon fruit. They also have a lot of gadgets, if you like gadgets. Next time I'm getting some sort of fine collander I can wash rice in. They also have an assortment of very expensive rice cookers. Why does someone need a $200 rice cooker? I don't get it - mine cost $14.99. But prices on food and produce are great. Everything seems fresh and tasty! This all-around asian market carries a vast variety of fresh produce and even has a selection of indian spices and mexican food. The market was also very clean and has live seafood. Im not going to bother mentioning the wide variety of produce/meat/fish. Im giving them 4 stars simply because they carry fresh sushi grade tuna, salmon, and UNI !!!!!!. As of writing this I dont know any other place in the area to buy fresh uni, and the uni is only $6 for a tray. Sure it may not be the highest quality uni in the world, but its totally legit. They dont always have it in stock, maybe every second week but I usually buy two trays and they are ok to eat raw for at least 4 days after I bring them home. read more

After visiting the H Mart (aka Han Ah Reum) in Fairfax and LOVING IT, I decided to try their location in Wheaton since it is a little bit closer to my upper NE DC location. It is not nearly as shiny, clean and new as the Super H Mart. The store is not as large so the variety of dry goods and frozen foods is not as wide and they do not have the cool peanut buttered squid treats that are available out in Fairfax. Having said that they do have much better and much nicer produce than they have at my local Safeway, Giant and perhaps Whole Foods. And not only is the quality better, the prices are significantly lower also. I also love the small bakery at the front of the store. So this location gets five stars for quality and pricing but loses a star due to the comparison to the Fairfax store. I find that if I do not make it to this store about every other week I get a bit grumpy because I do not have beautiful, and inexpensive, fruit in the house! Big Hint -- Be ready for some extreme shopping from parking lot to checkout! This ain't your local Giant! read more

It always smells strange in the store but they have a wide range of ethnic and foreign fruits and vegetables and snacks. I Love strolling through the produce section and aisles to find new things to try or new ingredients to add to recipes. Everyone there is friendly but the store does seem a bit crowded whenever I go. It can be hard to navigate through the establishment without having to stand and wait for someone to move or having to excuse yourself often to squeeze by. I think they can benefit from a larger facility. The bakery is extremely enticing. The cakes are BEAUTIFUL... Almost too gorgeous to want to eat. When I am off my diet, I will give them a shot and update this review. read more
