And finally, there are some freshly prepared foods that make the co-op a destination store for me. Sushi. And those spicy samosas that are kept in the warmer near the soups. Especially the cabbage one! Apparently they are made by Zemen, the Ethiopian grocery on Maple, so you could also look for them there. That is the co-op the way I experience it. DO NOT USE APPLE PAY HERE!!!!!!!…read more There is no sign posted saying that Apple Pay is currently not working, so I had no reason to know there was an issue. I placed my order, they rang everything up, and the payment was declined on their end. However, the charge still reduced my Apple Cash balance and shows as "pending" on my end. The employees told me the pending transaction supposedly will not authorize, but apparently this has happened before. If they already know there is an issue with Apple Pay, why is there no sign at the register saying, "We are currently unable to accept Apple Pay"? Had there been a sign, I obviously would not have used it and this entire situation could have been avoided. Now my money is tied up in a pending transaction, I have a screenshot showing the charge and the reduced balance, and I couldn't leave with the items I had already attempted to purchase. I asked the employees for help and asked to speak with a manager. I was told the manager wasn't there. I asked if they could call the manager, and they told me they didn't have a manager's number and refused to call anyone. The only solution they offered was for me to come back tomorrow and talk to the manager. So, essentially, their payment system has an issue, they apparently know about it, they didn't warn customers about it, and now I'm expected to rearrange my plans and come back tomorrow to deal with the consequences. The employees also seemed completely lost about what to do. The only response I kept getting was, "I apologize for that." I appreciate an apology, but an apology doesn't resolve the fact that my balance has been reduced and I don't have the merchandise I attempted to purchase. I ultimately had to buy the item using a credit card instead, while now having to wait and see whether the Apple Pay transaction actually processes or eventually gets reversed. If it does process despite the store not completing the purchase, I'll have to contact the card issuer to dispute the charge. The frustrating part is that this could have been prevented by something incredibly simple: PUT UP A SIGN. If Apple Pay isn't working, tell customers before they use it. Don't let the transaction fail on your end, leave the customer's money in pending status, and then tell the customer to come back tomorrow because you don't know what else to do. One star because the actual problem wasn't just that Apple Pay didn't work. Technical issues happen. The problem was the lack of communication, the lack of a warning, and the complete lack of any useful assistance once the problem occurred.

Whenever I saw something I was interested in buying, I held it right up to my face to make sure that I had the right item. During this time, something else was right up in my face---the store clerk. A woman had pointed at me and presumably said something negative about me ("He must be a thief! Don't you see that he doesn't have 20/20 vision?") I was just trying to mitigate the effects of my poor eyesight. After that woman pointed at me, the store staff followed me around the store as they would a suspected shoplifter, even though I have been a regular customer for years; literally since the day that this store opened, and far longer than that woman. Overall, it was an extremely disappointing experience. Is this how you treat your shoppers with disabilities?

I was saddened by the decision to close the base and I think having a facility to care for veterans inside our city limits was important both symbolically and practically, and while the complex was still in various stages of construction when I stopped in, the hospital that once stood near here was not recognizably present. As to the store itself, it has a lot of standard things you'd expect to see, but I found some nice items on clearance. Self-checkout was available, if marginally functional, and I found a set of single-stall bathrooms to be a welcome development, but they were only available after checking out at the register. There was a lot of weird bush league behavior going on, including a car standing out front double parked after the driver dodged in for what I assume was an online order pickup. It seems like this largely vacant complex should have easier parking and more efforts to discourage bad behavior, but apparently I expect too much.

I want to give a special shoutout to the international foods Trader Joe sources. This is generally a TJ strong suit, but here I want to mention a few they absolutely nail: Mini samosas: most Indian restaurants in the US serve samosas that have thick doughy shells and are overstuffed with potato filling. But the ones I really love are the Gujarati kind, with thin exteriors and better proportioned, more flavorful filling. This is the kind TJ carries. Oh my heart! Beef Birria: cooked long and slow, so the tomato, vinegar and chili meld into a deep, complex sauce to flavor the beef. The meat itself is so tender it falls easily apart, perfect filling for a tortilla. Takes me right back to Mexico. MultiPurpose Japanese seasoning: I originally bought this to make a seaweed mayonnaise that I wanted to serve with salmon. It turned out beautifully, but pretty soon I was sprinkling the seasoning on all manner of dishes, bringing them alive on my tongue and giving me a new reason for being excited about food!
