Some of the coupon items require customers to download the Safeway app. The aisles are a bit small. You can't easily have two shopping carts "pass" each other. I used to really like this store. Been shopping here for many years. They recently did a complete remodel and now its TERRIBLE! Aisle are narrower. Lots of things are in glass cases where the doors open out, blocking the narrow aisles. I have seen MANY people run into the open doors with their carts. How soon will they start breaking. When staff is stocking the shelves, aisles are completely blocked. When its crowded, the store is impossible to navigate. The other day I tried to alert a staff member to a meat case where packages were leaking, it was gross. I was very polite and he completely ignored me!!!! I hate to write this review, but I also hate the fact that my favorite store is ruined. read more

On more than one occasion, I have attempted to pick up prescriptions from the pharmacy but, upon arrival, the pharmacy was closed for lunch or for a break. On each of these occasions, the times were different. The hour listed on the website are Sunday - Saturday 5:00 AM - 11:00 PM. I enjoy shopping at the Kensington store and have been for more than 20 years. I am retired now and travel approximately 30 minutes to Kensington. Safeway Pharmacy lost my payment information despite me having a FreshPass Subscription and being a weekly customer with them for food, I checked my bank statements and everything was in order. I am home-bound with Parkinson and after calling them 4 times and corporate twice and billing once they several times refused to send me my medication even though they had billed me. read more

Eh, not a bad location and the clerks and managers there were decent and will help if needed, but my problem on this is the fact that they almost never clean the bathrooms and while I get that it's a stressful job to clean all that up, but it's a bathroom, what do you expect? The welcome sign was the only engaging aspect of my visit. The employee at the door was unpleasant & too concern with snacking on his candy when I asked if there were any cart wipes, hand sanitizer or gloves. The latter, he told me with an attitude while walking away "We ain't got none for customers but there's some behind customer service"...as if I was going to help myself. The employee's demeanor & the store's disarray across all fronts made me not want to spend money here. To that end, I remember what our beloved MDBurbs CD Mike B. stated about being patient & understanding during these times. Instead of giving the employee a good ol' fashion MK addressing, mentally I was like "You is smart, You is kind & You is important - I needed help from The Help. However, this sort of customer service is not acceptable. We are all enduring & everyone should extend & receive the basic courtesy aka decent customer service as we traverse forward. This safeway has a good selection but is frustrating. One of 2 elevators is out of order as is the escalator to the garage. The store is on 1 level except for the garage. There is also limited ground level parking. There is small eating area in Starbucks if you want to eat your ready to eat food in the store. However finding utensils is a challenge. For some reason lots of spoons, no forks or knives. So even if you're taking it to go for a picnic you still won't easily find knives and forks. The layout is a little odd--most safeways have bakery and deli adjacent. This store have them on opposite sides of a regular grocery aisle. Usually by the time you get to bakery and deli you are past the grocery aisles but not in this case. This makes the groceries in those aisles hard to find, namely junk food in this case, chips and candy. This store has lots prepared food but certain things are limited such as no store brand lil smokies mini hot dogs, refrigerated prepared foods such as shepherds pie, etc. The boalthouse farms drinks selection seems limited unless some flavors were discontinued. a few more chairs in starbucks would be helpful and plastic utensils. read more

This store has fallen apart. It has a broken escalator and elevator, both since August, and the one working elevator has all of its buttons broken off. The store staff say that parts are on order. The store is routinely dirty. I tried to buy food for dinner tonight but the line for the self check out was to the back of the store and the two open registers had substantial lines with big orders. I am not a self serve checkout person. I am always disappointed no matter the time that I have visited that there is rarely more than one register open. The shelves are often empty. I don't think anyone has ever spoken to me or been polite. The coupons can rarely be used, wrong size, wrong flavor, any reason to not honor their own coupons. Not at all handicapped accessible. If you go in the evening self check out is the only way. That is not an option if you are disabled. read more

Never, never, never order a grocery delivery here at the Kensington Safeway. They said it was running late, but actually they cancelled it on me. Horrible. No one knows what's going on, and the delivery service clocks out whenever they feel like it. And... you don't get a full reimbursement. This store has just lost a star for lack of customer service. By that I mean, literally no employee behind the customer service stand, and no manager in sight. Yesterday I was overcharged for three items. One was b/c they left the old sale price up. If it was under a dollar - no problem, but $5.29?! I want my money back! Today I went to the Customer Service counter and waited... and waited... finally I asked a bagger where the manager was. He pointed to a guy at Register 3. The bagger went up to him to tell him I needed him. I saw him ask the guy what I wanted. The bagger (whom was a bit "challenged") came back and asked me what I wanted. He then went and told the manager/cashier and he did not even turn around. Five minutes later, the gal who was manning the self checkout aisles came over and helped me. She was courteous, but didn't really care that I was ripped off. She trusted what I said about the items being a lower price and gave me the difference without question. I still like this store. It's new and clean. It has great produce and bakery goods. Although, just because it is 2:30 on a Friday, that doesn't mean you can skimp on employees. read more

Normally I shop here once in a while and have been satisfied. Since the pandemic, I have been using their delivery service, which turns out to be DoorDash employees. While I think Safeway has been doing okay with the food, I have had two bad experiences with the DoorDash drivers. One of them entered my kitchen when he was not asked to do so, and he contaminated several of my counters because he failed to ask me where I wanted him to put the groceries (if he asked, I would have said leave them on the floor outside the door). The second horror was a dude who texted me when he arrived and said he was refusing to bring the groceries up to my apartment door (he wanted to just leave them in the lobby of my building). I had to beg him to come to the door, telling him about my disability and risk status for COVID-19 (high risk). After hearing his complaints that "there were too many bags," he finally came up. The "too many" number of bags was 6--and most of them were fairly light because like everyone else these days, I didn't get much of what I ordered. This guy should be fired. Shame on you, DoorDash, and Safeway, you might want to consider hiring some of the people out of work who need the money and won't do things like this. read more

The Kensington, MD. Safeway is one of the few food markets in the DC area that is generally open 24 hours every day. (On rare occasions I've found "closing at 10 PM" signs in their windows; wish they wouldn't do that without an online warning!) Strong in the Southwest US, Safeway has had a strong presence in the Washington DC area for at least three decades. Europe's Aldi Sud recently opened Aldi markets here in the DC area. Locally-developed Giant Food also has a strong presence. We shop all of them, but Safeway has earned more than half of our supermarket spending for 16 years. Their house-brand offerings are always worth trying and often a better choice than the comparable name brand. Others have commented here about "rude"employees". Can't say that I've encountered employees I would call "rude" at any market in this area. read more

This Safeway has done something I never though possible - made it cheaper to shop at Whole Foods. I went here recently and noticed a sudden price hike ($2 per bell pepper, $4 milk?!) so I price shopped around, and this place was by far the most expensive. (Cheapest place for produce was the H-Mart in Wheaton). So while I am sad to lose the convenience of shopping at this location, I am glad that I can finally enjoy the quality of Whole Foods and feel I'm getting "bargain" prices. read more

Having no checkers available and forcing customers to check out their own groceries is not acceptable, especially at 8am in the morning. Also, this store is terrible about removing long expired products from their shelves (more so than most Safeway stores) and the employees here feel as if their treated terribly by management. I go here often; I like that it still has a small town feeling. I find the staff and management great; so friendly. My only complaint was recently, I purchased some packaged potato salad and macaroni salad and my family said that these must have been previously frozen as their taste and texture was horrible. I love this safeway location because it is never really packed when I go and when it is kinda busy there is more parking in the back of the store. It is also situated near other places. It also has a starbucks like most Safeways do. I stopped in here to pick a few things up. The lines were not long as there are a lot of check out counters as this is a larger safeway. The sandwich counter where you make sandwiches is great. The starbucks is great too. Like all safeways, their products, I find, are a little more pricey, but you can save a bundle if you get the Safeway card. It is clean, the staff is friendly, and the store is huge. This Safeway is the only thing of substance in Kensington that doesn't involve antiques. I know the town has its charm being nestled between legs of the Red Line, but it is the place development forgot! Anyways, the one bit of recent development they've gotten is a good one. The prices may be higher than Giant and they're sure higher than Shoppers (and even on some things Harris Teeter), however it's a nice, clean, and modern location that reflects the 21st century. I remember visiting on the first day and being blown away, since it was so much better than the Giant up the road in Wheaton. It serves its role as a suburban supermarket well and is worth the trip for those living in areas with other, lesser Safeways (or any lesser grocery shopping). read more

I would have given a 4-Star because this is my neighborhood Safeway for years. I took off two for what happened last night, Al was in the 15 Items or fewer lane and all the other lanes had long lines. I didn't have 15 items I maybe had 25? That's debatable, either way i step into the lane and he is like "whoa whoa whoa 15 items or less" Now I knew this, but I figured since he didn't have anyone for about 5 Minutes prior to me attempting to go in his lane I'd give it a shot. I think Customer Service would be the key here, maybe even being a team player. Seeing that your Coworkers are swamped why not help out a little? Well That's minus one star, I'll take off a star for him being rude and obnoxious about not attending me. I went to another long lane, waiting for like 5-8Minutes and he didn't get a customer for another 3 Minutes or so. Really dude, you want 15 items or less or not do anything at all? I see it like this, one don't raise your voice or be rude, two as a Manager myself I know if it gets busy I should step in and help. No Manager Presence. Nonetheless I'll keep returning, with not even 1Min from my house, I've seen this Safeway go through the remodel, I've seen the good staff and the bad over years. As I visited this morning, there was 1 line open and a huge back up at the self service stations (while two white shirted managers sat at the front desk). Safeway is not a one stop shop kind of place. This location caters to a more affluent clientele and sometimes you'll be hard pressed to find the right herbs for your recipes- sometimes they have leeks and fennel, sometimes they do not. Sometimes they have fresh string beans, sometimes they do not. A lot of their products are overpriced (Sabra individual pretzels and chips are twice the price of Giant's!) but they have a pretty good lunch-time selection. My favorite is coming up to the cold counter and getting a six dollar entree- you get one main (like a chicken breast) plus two sides. The sides are relatively healthy- like a greek vegetable salad, kale "superfood" salads, quinoa salads. They're usually lightly dressed and not overly greasy like you'd expect. The chicken breast is frozen and they just leave it out to thaw, but it's quite tasty and at 6 dollars, quite the bargain. I like it better than Whole Food's entree selections (and their salad bar quality has plummeted within the past few years). read more

Parking, never a problem, as they have a garage in the basement. not so produce-heavy, although an gourmet mix of interesting food products intertwined with the run of the mill stuff. The overall setup is wierd and tight, and reminds you of a local grocery, not a corporate store. They carry items giant does not, so I make sure this is one of my monthly stops. read more
