I ordered the whole flaming bird for $9.99. I asked for chicken that came off the grill so it would be fresher. The chicken is served with corn tortillas and grilled onions. When I got home, the leg and thigh quarter looked small. Some of the chicken was sliced off the side of the thigh...very unusual. The chicken breast was very dry. The grilled onions had no color. It should have been grilled to give it flavor. I enjoyed flaming bird chicken years ago at the HEB near South Park Mall so it was a disappointment. The chicken was over cooked. read more

Flaming Bird is such a lifesaver on those days when we are 1. Indecisive on where to eat and 2. When we are being thrifty. Two well-served protein bowls are under $15; compared to Chipotle selling each bowl around $13-$15 this is considerable savings! The service is always good and the line moves quickly - just keep in mind they may run out of proteins like beef fajita around their closing times. I typically order the flaming bird bowl with refried beans, Mexican rice, roasted corn, and greens. Everything always tastes fresh and delicious. The morning of pickup for a gender reveal cake I received a call from the bakery I ordered from saying they did not have any strawberry cake that day. So now I didn't just not have a cake for my gender reveal, I now knew my cake was going to be strawberry meaning the gender was no longer a surprise.. In a panic to still make the gender a surprise for everyone else I rushed into the bakery explaining my situation and these ladies not only made an exception to their 24 hour notice requirement, they made me a cake in 15 minutes! They recently stopped serving the Serrano mash potatoes!! Everyone I knew loved those! Now we don't eat flaming bird as much anymore, it's just not the same without the mash potatoes. That was our favorite side!! I hope they bring them back. read more

The service more time than not is good, sometimes excellent, like this last time and sometimes very bad. Ambiance ummm, it's a grocery store. Now for the reason I'm reviewing, the Pizza station. I'll just stick with the Pizza this round, the last 3 times I've ordered my pizza, and for that matter only once many years ago they sold it to us the way we ordered. I always order extra sauce (they never make it that way). I believe they were trying to teaching me a lesson, with little or No sauce this time. Here we go! The good ol reliable, flamin bird chicken, always such a treat after a long day and not wanting to cook dinner, this hits. The meals here are always such a good price and sometimes they even offer small coupons. The chicken is always cooked to perfection and seasoned well. The sides are almost always hot and fresh. There are different variations of the plate, some with sausage and some with just chicken. Other things served are the bowls or things as such or actual whole chicken dinners, like said it's super cheap and accessible, since it's there in the store if you're shopping around. Went on an early morning shopping trip and as always, found just what I needed. And then some. However check out experience could have been better . My lane had two young ladies bagging my groceries, but things definitely took longer than they should have. V and S (first initials only) we're conversing while bagging my groceries, which definitely made the process longer. I let someone up front know about it and I believe he went over to let them know. Bananas taste like chemicals... had to throw away. Bought the ones on the left a few days after the ones on the right for when those were gone. However, the ones on the left, although very green still, started spotting terribly. I peeled one to eat and it was very very mushy and tasted like chemicals. Made me nautious... They're going down hill. Customer service used to be top notch now its random.. I'm really appalled when I had to pay .32 cents for a roll of quarters. I'm exchanging 10 for a roll no I was told they have to buy from the bank so I guess us consumers will pick up the costs. Smh go to the bank if you want a roll of quarters. Economy already bad and to think they're in on it in helping with blowing it up is sad. The store used to give free stuff if they messed up but, no more. HEB cashiers are the worst! No greeting and no thank you was to be heard from Christian R. at the Tezel/Grissom location. I put out my insulated bag at the front along with a regular bag. I mentioned to Christian about my cold items are to be in the insulated bag(common sense) and he reluctantly started taking out cold items from reg. bag and transferred them to insulated bag. I will gladly travel vast distances to find a grocery store that meets my criteria: clean, well organized aisles, numerous organic options, and friendly, approachable staff. Of all the H-E-B's I've visited (and I've visited many), the location at Loop 1604 and Bandera is my favorite by far. Luckily for me, it's only a few miles from my home. The parking lot is always full, even during off times, but don't let that dissuade you; the store is so massive that it never feels crowded. If you're a tad agoraphobic like me, then fear not. The worst you will encounter is an inconsiderate aisle hog and his or her entourage of ill-behaved offspring (this is suburbia, after all). Regardless, the aisles are so wide that I seldom experience a shopping cart traffic jam. Perhaps it's my imagination, but this H-E-B's organic produce section seems especially large compared to other stores I've visited. If you're mindful of your health or simply prefer to consume superior tasting produce, then you will enjoy shopping here. I eat an apple every day to quell my chronic acid reflux/GERD, so I appreciate the vast selection of organic Honeycrisp, Kanzi, and Opal apples. The entertainment section was scaled back substantially a few months ago, but I continue to find great deals on electronics. About a week after Black Friday, I spotted a 1TB Xbox One S with two controllers, a rechargeable battery pack, and a 4K UHD Blu-Ray movie listed at a ridiculously low price. It had been marked down from $430 to $250. On top of that, the store was offering a $75-off promotion on all Xbox One and PS4 consoles, so I paid only $175. I've seen similar deals on 4K TV's and Bluetooth speakers, so if you're in the market for a new TV or video game console, then remember to visit the electronics department toward the front of the store. Staff at this location are invariably friendly, helpful, and good natured, a far cry from what I used to experience at Central Market on Broadway. On one occasion, I asked the butcher if he had any Prime-graded blue cheese burger patties in stock. He could have said, "Sorry, bro, we just sold the last one," but he offered to make a patty just for me. Now that's customer service! The cashiers and baggers are friendly, too, and often initiate conversation about my purchases. I assume most of them are O'Connor students working a part-time job. If that's the case, then they should have bright futures ahead of them; a winning personality goes a long way in any field. I seldom review mundane places like shopping malls and grocery stores, but I believe this location deserves merit. I shop at HEB several times a week. I love the products, the layout of the store. The food I buy is fresh and packaged well. I was in there today with my son and he was in the cart. While walking around the store other customers were admiring him and saying how sweet he was. I went to check out and the cashier said he should not be in the cart because it's unsanitary. I would be willing to bet he is more sanitary than most going thru the checkout. It really hurt my feelings. My son may be a French Bulldog but he is still my son. read more

I kind of thought all the HEBs were the same until I came into this one. For the most part it carried the same items as most and it was no different than some of the other HEB Plus markets in the area. I was wrong. Each one has it's own little niche. I do wish that they carried some of the same items in each one to make it easier to shop with so many being in the San Antonio area. I noticed this one had a much larger international food area. What was impressive was the multiple Caribbean products they had. I stuck gold and found one of my favorite West Indian sauces and various heat levels of it. It might seem small but its those small things that make the difference. I have been on the hunt for this sauce in the area and not even the "Caribbean" grocers or international markets in this area carry this. This store is very large and offers a pizza place (South Flo) in it along with a place where you can get grilled chicken (Flaming Bird). With this HEB only about 10 minutes from me I can see myself making a few trips here despite there being a HEB down the street from me. read more

I've moved to town recently from the east coast and have been mourning the loss of my favorite grocery store, Wegmans. Trader Joes and Whole Foods are a tad too far for me to reasonably make my regular grocery stores (especially with this heat). The first HEB I went to was quite dilapidated and run down. But I spotted this one that seemed quite shiny and new and decided to give them another shot. It's not my beloved Wegmans, but it will do the job. Their prices are very cheap, and selections seem of pretty good quality. This one is HUGE if you can't tell from the outside and really is a the perfect one stop shop. You can get anything you can dream of here. I felt like we were in there forever trekking around getting everything we needed. Their bakery also had cronuts, fried croissants that are glazed, so that's major points in my book. Their flower selection seems good too. The peonies tempted me. Pretty friendly employees too. They also as two "restaurant" options up front near the floral area that I will have to try. Only complaint was that the bathrooms were HOT! Turn on the AC in there! Gross! Overall big thumbs up for this place. I think it will be my go to grocer. read more

The most recent additions are a pretty good pizza restaurant with happy hour between 4-7 and a new Sushiya kiosk with a larger display case for more fresh made offerings. This store is incredibly busy all the time but weekends are manic. I try to avoid this store on Sundays. There are so many wonderful friendly staffers here but we love Hunter in the Beer/Wine department. He is super knowledgeable about the products. We have been to H-E-B delis all over SA. This one is by far the best. The butchers are great too. Using the H-E-B app offers great coupons and extra goodies such as free items or savings on different departments like meat, seafood or produce. read more

The Biggest HEB in Texas! I've always heard that this is the biggest of the big. This place is humongous. This is technically an HEB Plus! Seriously, the largest grocery store you'll go in any time soon. Everything's bigger in Texas. This store has everything! It's got a gardening section even, with locally sourced plants that do especially well in Texas. They've got all kinds of deals in there! There's also a Flaming Chicken on site- they sell roasted chickens asados nortenos style! If you can't wait for a Meal Simple, this is a great option. There's a bakery, a meat counter, a butcher- they've got everything. My favorite part is the Kodi Cooler section, where they have proprietary HEB coolers that are built Texas Tough. Every time I've been, the employees have been friendly and go beyond. Be sure to check out the Cooking Connection where they sample up sauces, salsas, and give you a bite of something special most all the time! HEB even has a new app to make the coupon clipping easier! Eva Longoria says you should check it out. Parking is easy- it has a giant parking lot, under the windmill. If you're a fan of HEB's, this one is one of the best! read more

HEB is the best super market chain I have ever known. It is Christmas Eve 2015 and they have all checkout lanes open. Why can't other companies figure this out. This is the largest HEB in San Antonio. Every employee I have encountered has been friendly and knowledgeable. You can expect your typical low HEB prices here. The place is always so well kept. If you are a wino and love free samples this is your place. Inside this HEB you will find a complete bakery, a shopping boutique, an extensive fish market to include live seafood, a legit electronics store, free samples of food and drink, a pharmacy, a toy store, common household items, and oh yea a grocery store with an extensive selection of organics. This H-E-B y'all!..has soo much more than the one closer to our house. Great variety and selections IN EVERY DEPARTMENT! The parking layout is nice and even-it's not traffic heavy on one side. This one does have a pizzeria inside where you can pick up a slice or whole pie. Also offers a walk up Auntie Anne's pretzel inside. There is no membership required here. This location is my follow up to a trip to Costco. The store is huge but has variety. I can easily locate specialty ingredients or specific items without needing to buy a four pack or gallon size. Bulk items that are not available at a Membership club like a 40 oz hand sanitizer are on the shelf here daily. I see various displays that feature presentation suggestions and shopping ideas for the budget chef and those who prepare food well out of my price range. I have found that I need to allow more time for this location than other HEB stores due to parking lot, size, distance from a to b, distractions, but I think that I spend little more than usual for a better selection. read more
