Just the fancy restaurants and the tourist hotspots which don't really need a review where your review will get lost in a sea of 20,000 others. This place is super cute with a lot of great stuff and fun stuff and I've stopped in here on several occasions when coming to San Antonio, and I'm sure they will come back here on many occasions in the future. And they have the word five in their name so what rating did you think I was going to give them? This store is a dime.

I marvel at the fact that so many stores -- mere spitting distance from one of America's most…read morehistoric places (The Alamo) -- get no love, nor even attention, from Yelpers. Here is a general store across the street from a site with more than 2,500 photos, almost 1,000 reviews (and an inexplicably low 4-star composite rating) and has a paltry EIGHT reviews and 4 photos (which I'm going to double today). Maybe I just love general stores with the amalgam of touristy stuff, toiletries you forgot to bring, and temptations of the sweet and salty kind. They sum it up best with their motto, "Travel necessities. Hometown setting." First, yes, as you would expect, there is PLENTY of Alamo-related stuff. Neither cheap nor chintzy, there are plenty of Alamo t-shirts, cups, magnets, mugs souvenirs, and other ephemera at prices (at least based on my experience) a bit less expensive than at other establishments. An, if you want to show some Texas pride, there's plenty to buy to remind your friends where you're from and what state not to mess with. And yes, it has the feel with the old-time pharmacy catch-alls, from medicines and ointments to phone chargers and travel bags. The convenience of an airport gift shop without the high prices and drab formulaicness. Five and Dime ain't for the cynic. You'll find the kind of cowboy hats you'd find on a sorority girl at a Saturday night party. You'll find the kind of sombreros you have lying around awaiting the moment when your friend passes out drunk and you can place it on his head and Sharpie a Zapata-style mustache on his upper lip. Yes, there's plenty of humor in the Five and Dime collection! In the end, Five and Dime is a great store for both local and tourist alike. Their hometown philosophy can also be found at their other locations: On the San Antonio Riverwalk, on the Landing in Branson, in Old Town San Diego, Market Street in Charleston, Old Town in St. Augustine (FL), Cannery Row in Monterey (CA), River Street in Savannah (GA), and the Historic Plaza in Santa Fe. All great places, and all where I'll be making a stop at the Five and Dime when I do. See you there!

Have you ever been in the middle of flossing when all of a sudden the last string of floss exits…read morethe dispenser and you're left with no floss? That was the horror I experienced during my work trip. "Why didn't I bring backup floss!?!?!?!?!?" Kidding, who brings backup floss, maybe you do, if so, kudos to you. Enter the RiverCenter Drug Store inside the RiverCenter mall. I refused to pay $4.99 for a single pack of my favorite floss from the hotel store, so I headed to the mall to find a lower price and found it at this store for $2.67. Still overpriced than the usual $0.99 I find at Target but cheaper than $4.99 so I was happy. And, no spend limit to use a credit card like the small kiosk inside the mall who said I had to spend at least $4 to pay for my floss with them. The drug store is large with lots of stuff so if you don't feel like walking to the Walgreens or CVS this is a great option. And yes, I just wrote about buying floss for my first 2018 review! :) What a way to start the year!

No issues at all. Now the food was...well it looked great! Just wasn't executed well. The taste was there though. I got the street tacos, which was 3 regular sized tacos on white corn tortillas. They grilled up the onions and a jalapeño fresh. They added some oil, and 'cooked' the tortillas. But they just took the meat out the warmer and put it in the shells in the container. That was whack. The red salsa was good. The green salsa was not. The actual food was disappointing because the tortillas fell apart soon as I bit into em. A small thing of beans came with it- I don't mess with beans like that. The order came to $10 and some change.

When I need a cup of sugar..Or eggs I need for a recipe.. this or that..My list is endless that Molina's has saved me from leaving downtown and having to go to a big box store for that ONE thing I desperately need! And now about the staff... Since I'm mosDefinitely one of their many regulars and because of this.. I know EVERY single one of their staff and just the same.. They all, including the owner, Know me very well and always go above and beyond for me and treat me with the utmost respect.. If there's something that they're out of that I'm there for.. they (their staff and at times when the owner is there, she as well will ALWAYS ALWAYS write down and make a list of the things I had originally came for and within a mere few days, I'll stop by and it's usually one of their lovely employees inform me that what I had been looking for is back in stock... Now..Tell me how many other corner stores happily and proudly deliver THAT level of QUALITY service and follow through? Yea..NONE. PLUS! From the moment they open until they lock their doors they have onsite security officers there! Now -The owner- She's wonderful, very professional and truly Kind. A year or so ago.. I was talking with one of her employees about a... A rather awkward yet serious issue I had with one of the individuals that had been sent from the security company she had a contract with that were supposed to come there to enforce "security" To the point where i found myself avoiding the store if I thought he might be there..Bc he harassed me every time I would swing by the store for one thing or the other.. Finally one evening I went in to the store and it was actually one of her very professional employees that just came out and asked me about the situation with this individual and my gosh was I thankful they asked me about it.. And I was Ahhh!! Oh my gosh yall HELP!! I even shared with them that how I had been avoiding coming.. And just so happened that the owner was in the back and came out to the front bc I think she could hear bits in the back.. And she IMMEDIATELY just started apologizing (so so sincerely) And was so sorry from ALL aspects and assured me (and I believed her 1000%) That to not worry I wouldn't EVER have to see this individual EVER ever again and she would be addressing this IMMEDIATELY.. And I said.. I am so NOT the type to cause drama or..ya know..Do anything that might cause a fuss... And she made me feel so.. So HEARD and understood. I do get that this is a rather long review for your lil corner store...or rather MY CORNER STORE But from ownership to her employees.. Who all know me.. Every time I go there.. Raise the bar to any corner store from our downtown area to across this city. Much love yall

But this one in downtown San Antonio was the worst. When we were in El Paso, we had to wait 10 seconds to get a new bottle of creamer and the guy was so apologetic. So I said OK good it's not just me. The app didn't work and a ton of employees standing around texting when myself another customers were looking for help. Only reason I gave it two stars instead of one it's because it was an inner city gas station, which I'm sure gives them a lot of problems. Two of their four coffee machines were down and many of their pull handle coffees were empty with just water coming out. Of the machines that were working, we had to let the staff know that they were out of coffee. Only one gentleman who is running a register seemed to be really trying out of the whole staff.

I suppose the self scan as you walk in is good. Self checkout usually runs quick and smoothly. I don't know why they don't have a self scan to check your groceries against your receipt on the way out. That's where the lines back up. The food court would be my main complaint. It makes no sense. You have to order at the kiosk; there's no convenient place to wait; if you order in advance by phone you have to ask someone about your order and it always feels like your interrupting. One time I ordered pizza for a party by phone and even I got to the kiosk to pay, the pizza was out of stock. It was confusing and added an additional challenge, but I got my order. Obviously, that's not a deterrent and I'll probably come back for other party needs.

Now I know Arlan's is not actually only in San Antonio, but it is at least a smaller scale grocery business. And if you've been in this location, you know that it is almost entirely employed by people who live inside the immediate community. This means shopping at Arlan's provides jobs for your friends and neighbors. Easy access - I just can't take the parking lots at large grocery stores. Sometimes you need to stop just for that one thing; cookies you promised you would make with your daughter or the beef broth you forgot to pick up on shopping day. At Arlan's you can park quickly and run in, without making this a big fiasco. A little pricey - Since it IS a quick stop, and since it is getting so much competition from the big box store just built down the road, the prices are a little high at Arlan's. It's just so worth it if you don't want to spend 15 minutes in a store for one item, and accidentally leave with 3! My Yelp rating system: 5 stars= Driving across town just for this! 4 stars= I would recommend visiting. 3 stars= Average, acceptable, positive. 2 stars= You might be able to drag me in. 1 star= I will definitely not be returning.
