This review is for their coffee/smoothie bar only: Be aware Central Market is under major renovation. Half of the market was closed off, but something new that popped up near the front of the store was a coffee/smoothie bar. We stopped in for a quick to go order of a coffee, pastry, and smoothie. I loved the fact that there is an option to make your own. I was able to choose my base, 2 fruit options, and a veggie. I chose - blueberry, strawberry, (comes with a banana), spinach, and almond milk. Perfect! Healthy and fresh. The girl behind the counter was friendly and accommodating. There's also a gelato bar. Okay, I never thought I'd be reviewing a grocery store but our experience was so annoying I felt compelled to. So they just re did a portion of the store to expand their ready made foods. My husband and I go in to get a couple of sandwiches. We've done it before for little weekend picnics, but my bread was so tough today it wasn't really pleasant. It felt like it had been left in the fridge section for too long. Then we knew the brisket and prepared meats weren't going to be ready until 4, we had asked one of the employees there and they told us it'd be ready at 4. We ordered a couple of sides for dinner and both of the sides were labeled incorrectly. One of them triple the price of what the item should have costed. We came back at 4 and then were informed the brisket might be out actually closer to 5. What? Why tell us 4 and then push it to another hour? We decided to leave and check out and at the checkout lane I noticed they started putting the meat out?? Did they just not want to serve us?? Their customer service specifically was rude but our cashier who helped us with the overpriced ticketed items was nice and helpful. It just doesn't feel good to be treated with disrespect and to basically be lied to because the same guy who said it wouldn't be out until 5 literally started to put out the meat as soon as we walked away. This site has been under construction for years. My phone thermometer said it was 87 degrees in the canned goods section. Foods in the freezer has were half thawed, and the produce was full of mold and flies. Either close this mess to finish the construction, or wait out the day when HEB is inevitably sued for selling spoiled food that got someone sick. After 20 plus years of shopping here, I have had enough. I don't want to weigh my moldy strawberries. I don't want to struggle through a user hostile, miserably hot store where I am afraid to buy mílk because the refrigeration isn't working. Billionaire Butts? This is the worst CM in Texas and it is supposed to be your flagship store. Either RUN THE STORE OR CLOSE IT DOWN. read more

Central Market is a grocery store and I want you to think of her as H-E-B's "trad-wife bougie sister". Don't let the dollar signs next to the business name scare you off from coming to take a stroll down the aisles and experiencing Central Market. Currently undergoing construction, this grocery store is still open to the public and the team here is actively keeping the store a pleasant place to knock a couple items off your grocery list. A couple highlights that would put this grocery store at the top of my list is the quality of organic produce and proteins. I personally come here because the self serve spice station which is very reasonably priced, some make even say they are cheap. Central Market also has chef-prepared options and will allow you to sample to the veggies, pastas and even some of the proteins like chicken salad, egg salad, shrimp salad and tofu. I personally was enjoying talking to the staff about the different options when they pointed out a sandwich and burger station. I was recommended to grab a California Connection Sandwich at the full service station and I swear the cook made my sandwich with love. It had the perfect balance of flavors between the tomato and basil pesto with the chipotle mayo. I was intrigued by the 210 Carne Asada sandwich because of the pickled onions but decided to just add the pickled onions to my California Connection instead and I was so glad I did. Once they are done with the construction I'm Sure there will be a lot more to see. I'll be back. read more

I specifically went to the burger section because it had great raves since the renovation was partially completed. It has a relaxing seating area by the coffee & burger bar. I ordered the classic burger. To my surprise, it was absolutely delicious! Chef Carmona did an amazing job preparing these burgers! I will be coming back for more. I love heb, and this store is like fancy heb so ofc I love it even more! They have lots of inventory, all types of things including bulk food, massive meats selection, and tons more. Staff here was very attentive and helpful. The store itself very neatly and nicely organized all throughout. I love that this store has unique features such as local honey, extra selection in chips, coffee, etc., and not to mention a ton of florals. Very nice touch. The store looked very good and clean. False advertising! We picked up catered Thanksgiving food and it was so bad we had to go out again the next day to find real Ham and more food! Really? Would you put this out for a Thanksgiving gathering? Small pieces of ham looked like leftovers! Thank God we checked before we brought it over to the dinner home. Everything was as such small portions. What they gave would only serve 2 ppl at best, AND you can't even make sandwiches out of the ham! They are the small end pieces shaped like a diamond. Turkey, stuffing, cranberry, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes would have been good but barely enough. Look at the photo they show, compare it to what we got... feel ripped off. We are not big eaters either, we are both in shape, same with our family that was awaiting the meal. No way we are returning for our Christmas catering and you shouldn't either! read more

Christmas spot to visit during the holidays. They usually have an excellent selection of food, side, dishes, and desserts. What makes it stand out from the other HEB stores is the prepared foods and a couple of food booths that you can find in the store. I usually visit H-E-B Central marketplace, to purchase some of my Christmas sides and entrées. They also have the delicious pies at H-E-B sells but with some twists. For example, one of their fruit pies is in four different fruit selections. Service, of course, is up to Heb standards so spectacular and this one has the Christmas feel for me. The prices are a bit higher than another HEB, but the selection is different, as well. This makes it ideal for trying to find items that might not be sold in other HEBs. read more

This place is full of just great stuff and ready to cook or even ready to eat foods. Looks like there is so remodeling currently, there is so many items to choose from that you can stay for more than one hour. It's been five years since my last review for Central Market and I still feel like I have a love and hate relationship with this grocery store. First of all, let me warn you that they are currently going through a huge renovation which is a big pain in the butt. With the current renovation, a huge part of their parking lot is not available to customers, which always creates a big traffic jam. Because of this I highly recommend for you to visit early in the morning when they are not as busy. On a more positive note, their meat selection is still one of the best in the city. Every time I need a good brisket or steak to cook at home, I know I have to buy it at Central Market. Their bakery section is also amazing and I highly recommend their cakes and cupcakes. Every time I get something from their bakery people asked me where I bought it. Last but not least, if you are hosting thanksgiving or just having people over and you don't have the time to cook, I highly recommend checking out their "food court" section. They have a huge selection of main dishes as well as side dishes. During big holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas they will have seasonal items that are perfect for gatherings. read more

Central Market probably has the most beautiful fruit and vegetable and mushroom displays. I love to peruse the options that you don't find in the typical HEB locations. The bakery and cheese sections are equally impressive. I mean honestly, so is the meat section and the fish section and the bulk section and the coffee and the floral.... You get the point. You can certainly get lost in browsing and thought in these stores. I like to pop in to the bakery for the fruit tart. It's so beautiful that I like to pick one up to take as a hostess gift whenever I'm invited to a gathering nearby. It impresses and is delicious. If you don't want to pick up food as a gift, check out the deliciously scented candles. You can't walk away empty handed. Also, don't snooze on the gelato station. I love the variety this store offers because you really can find anything you're looking for inside! We spontaneously grabbed a bottle of wine and ingredients to make a homemade carbonara at home and were happy to find a guanciale that didn't break the bank (it's rare to find it in other supermarkets so typically costs more) -- the butcher was super nice and actually told us next time that we could order from the counter exactly the amount we wanted in case it was too much. I loved that they had an assortment of cheeses with varying sizes/brands to pick from too! We went to Central Market today and came home to find my raspberry and chocolate ice cream runny and all the chocolate was one big blob at the bottom. This is my gourmet lunch spot. The sushi is awesome. I really enjoy the olive and salad bar selections to add variety to a healthy lunch. The array of drink options makes the meal even more unique. My family really enjoys going Central Market. My kids love that they can get free balloons and coloring pages, and they always make sure to bring quarters so they can buy fruit from the little fruit stand (if you don't have cash, you can pay at the register)! I love the bulk spices. You can get so many great options at a fraction of the cost of your standard spice jars. Sometimes I will swing by just to stock up on that. Aside from the grocery offerings, you can get several ready to go foods from the sushi bar, hot food section, gelato and coffees, bakery, stir fry and more. Maybe even Whole Foods on some level. Don't expect this to meet your expectations for your local HEB. It won't. That said, it's a classier, far more expensive supermarket...but the variety is OH MY GOD. Like other reviewers have stated, if you are looking for that ONE ingredient that seems impossible to find, you have a darn good chance at finding it here. Walking through the aisles, I could tell that Central Market carries QUALITY ingredients. There was many different "areas" depending on what you are looking for which made it easier to get what you need, but it was still nice to roam. We mainly came for their SOURDOUGH bread but unfortunately we didn't get the plain one. I LOVE that I finally found a place that carries ELLENOS yogurt (Marionberry is the best flavor, imo)...and I'll be back even if it's just for this particular item. All in all, I could spend a good two hours going from place to place in this market. read more

We love Central Market. The specialty vegetables, the cheese selection, the loose spices selection and the Deli are awesome for take out or eat. We take all of our out of town guests there to show it off. We usually finish the visit with a stop at the Gelato bar, but our last visit left us disappointed. Mind you, we have visited this store for more than 10 years and the small Gelato portion was always ample. But our last visit the clerk barely filled the cup and she said they had to weigh them all now. Central Market used to be a favorite haunt of ours. We used to drive to Austin to visit the original before they came to San Antonio. Well, they have been in SA for 30 years and we decided to pay for the 30th Anniversary Foodie Stroll. What a mistake. $10 per person for the event. And we waited in line to get our VIP wristbands. In return we would each get a $10 coupon. But what they failed to tell everyone was it's was $10 off $50 purchase and only good that day. If you are on their email list, you routinely get this coupon. Total fail! I would gave gladly used the coupon at a later date, but the store was so crowded I just wanted to leave. The first fail was the parking lot. So you have an event that will draw thousands and a third of your parking lot is closed. I wasn't going to give an parked a couple blocks away. We queued up outside in a long line to get our VIP wristbands. I was excited. Until we got inside. They had sample stations, but they were for everyone. Lots of long lines for samples. We finally got into a line for the VIP experience that was in the area that has tables close to to the sushi station. After a long wait we made it to the VIP area. They give you a bag and a $10 off $50 coupon only good that day. It was more samples and one beverage table. There was a band..not playing. And it was crowded. The samples were decent, but not excellent. We left the VIP area and had some more samples with the rest of San Antonio. We had a 3PM reservation, yet may of the stations were out of the expected food. The lady serving Caymus seemed to be overwhelmed and out of her element. I just walked away as her vibe was just too negative. The store was so crowded that we left without using either of our $10 off $50 coupons. Central Market you can do better. I feel like I wasted $20 for an overcrowded event where I did not feel like a VIP. read more
