I was headed to a store to go buy my veggies & stuff when I spotted these three little farmers set…read moreup. Let me tell you when I say I did a NASCAR stop & turn around - I mean it! Right there in the middle of McCullough, I did just that! I figured why go to the store when I can support local farmers!?! So, I did just that! Got me 2# of pecans (shucked), 2 jars of spicey okra (mmmm), some tomato preserves, apricot jam, & jalapeno jelly. I got there as they were packing up to head home. They had a ways to go. I'll get there earlier next time. Maybe get some meat. I come from an old cattle ranching family, & he knew my great grandpa's name. He even said "you're from the old families." I smiled & said yup. My grandpa's family set up some of the neighboring towns. So, my love & support of farmers runs deep! Support American Farmers! Then, I moved down the line to the next gentleman & bought a bushel of each of his veggies. $20 got me some delicious tomatoes, sweet & little red potatoes, zucchini (aka courgette), & onions. Gonna eat well! Finally moved over to the last farmers, The Perlata's. I got the last little bits of my veggies & a yummy jar of salsa. Kale, cilantro, bell peppers, yellow squash, green beans, cabbage, & broccoli that I'll be cooking tonight. The two things that were best part about all of this accidental discovery were I needed, & had all this on my list to go get for my shopping at TJ's. I got to meet some farmers, give back to our community, & keep the money local. This was such a great fund for me. Plus, it was a beautiful day. There was also a City of San Antonio employee out there cleaning up the area at the time as well. The park area was clean, but, he was out there doing rounds. The only issue was the sign. Maybe a local company could donate time, funds & supplies to fix it? Or some street art is could create an amazing sign? ‍

I had forgotten about this…read morelocation and used to frequent the parket back in the 90s when it was in a grove of shade trees. Not sure why they moved it to a hot parking lot. They had live music on this visit in June. There were only three vendors, but they had a good selection of local fruits and vegetables. I also saw eggs and grass fed beef, as well as some baked goods. Maybe if we get more people to patronize this market it will grow.

This is the Leon Valley location for the San Antonio Farmer's Market, which is open on Wednesdays…read moreonly, 7:30am - 1pm year round in the parking lot by the Leon Valley Community center. I grew up going to Farmer's Markets and was excited to finally get a chance to check out this one close to me. There were 8 vendor tents when I arrived and all were selling a variety of vegetables and fruits. While there were some commonalities between the tents (since certain things are in season) there was also a decent variety for it being a smaller gathering. Most of the stands had little baskets with the produce priced around $3-4 per basket, which was on par or cheaper than what I expect at the big HEBs in town. They also had some harder to find items, like lemon cucumbers, different types of kale and leafy veg, and all of it was WAY fresher than the big stores. Everyone was very friendly and they can take cash, debit, or lonestar cards (a huge plus since I don't always have cash). They also provide bags, although I bring my own out of habit. I don't know if they carry goods like oil or honey at any point during the year at this location, which is the only minor drawback I can remotely think of. The chance to buy fresh and support the immediately local growers is also great. Look forward to going back again for some squash (which they also had tons of) for a big picnic I will be bringing grilling vegetables to in the near future. If you go to the main website and click on "market schedule" in the left side bar, you can find the other locations in town where the vendors set up through out the week, so if this isn't the closest one to you, I bet you can find another. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would!

Visited Bulverde Market Day yesterday for the first time as I wanted to see the vendors. I wanted…read moreto buy some produce and sourdough but the sourdough vendor was already sold out of 47 loaves that she had baked that day! We stopped by a produce stand that had fresh carrots, tomatoes, garlic, cauliflower, bell peppers, lemons & limes & apples. Some produce was already sold out so that's good. I picked up huge carrots & fresh garlic that were $0.50 a piece. Rosie, the proprietor told us about where and how the veggies are grown in McAllen Texas, her family story and then proceeded to tell us about the Microgreens. It's her husband's business. We were able to hear how much nutrition they have even though they are tiny and how they are grown. They're so fresh and it's amazing how you could have a few strands of the microgreens that are equivalent to eating fully grown veggies?! Mind-boggling. We were able to try the Rambo Radishes as those were the only ones left as well as one more varietal, the China Rose Radish. They were pungent & spicy as radishes are but saw how nutrient-dense they were. Since they aren't mass-produced, they have a longer shelf life. We asked her how to incorporate them into dishes? I've seen them served in restaurants and I believe this company also sells to restaurants? I'm hoping to try other microgreens and add it to my diet. Rosie also showed us some Coconut Peat Moss that you can add to your soil since it's very clay-based in this area. It was a very educational visit with Rosie. Support local!

The value is fantastic, and the meat is perfect for throwing on the grill, cracking open a few chelas, and spending the afternoon with friends and family. Beyond the meat, their chicharrones are excellent, the carnitas are delicious, and the tortillas are always a must-buy. Half the time I go in for one thing and leave with a basket full of food I wasn't planning on buying. One thing I especially love is that they carry a lot of the brands, snacks, and Mexican products that are hard to find elsewhere. There are certain things that instantly remind me of home, and Culebra Meat Market seems to stock all of them. My only wish is that they sold liquor and not just beer. But hey, beggars can't be choosers. Great prices, great selection, and a place that feels like it understands its customers. Five stars.

Alamo Heights Farmers Market is conveniently located in The Quarry parking lot near Gold's Gym. This farmers market is not as big as other ones in the city but it has a lot of good options; plants, grass-fed beef, honey, aguas frescas, organic health products and much more! The best find during our first visit here was a Brazilian baker which was selling delicious brazilian baked goods. We decided to order two of his savory options; Pao de Queijo and Coxinha. The Pao de Queijo was so soft and delicious. The Coxinha was filled with shredded chicken and cheese, which made it the perfect breakfast bite. We will definitely be coming back!

Just as the name implies, the owner wants to get back to making tortillas without any artificial ingredients. He is passionate about tortillas and wants to make healthier options including a flax version that he is hoping to perfect by August. He is set up to mass produce so I'm hoping restaurants consider his tortillas because they are made in house everyday with corn, water and lime. No artificial colors or stabilizers. I tried the red corn and blue corn and I'm a superfan. Colonial also carries traditional corn in different sizes and some flour options. If you want to save for later they can also vacuum seal the pack. Closed on Sunday, all other days 8 to 230. There is street parking right in front.

Here in town is different, there are very little tortillerías. This is definitely one AUTHENTIC tortillería. When you walk in there's tortillas everywhere, the smell is amazing, you can watch the people in the back packing them and there's a small variety of different cooked products. Chicharrones, chiles rellenos, cheese, sour cream, sodas, etc... In my visit I just stopped by for a kilo of regular house tortillas. Saw some fresh chicharrones and snagged a bag. The gentleman at the door was very friendly and talked to me about different varieties of tortillas they make. Also, told me how to heat their tortillas to perfection. Very cool very friendly. Amazing customer service. I will definitely be back, want some of the chiles rellenos, definitely one of my favorite Mexican dishes.
