The aburi sushi was such a rip off. Some of the salmon and shrimp were paper thin and didn't even cover the whole piece of rice. I didn't move any fish, I scraped the sauce to show that there was no fish underneath some of the sauce. I asked the server who asked the sushi chef who said that's just how they make it, and that they will take my feedback to improve for the future. About 5-10 min later, not sure if it's because they saw me take pics and write on my phone, but they came back offering me 15% off my bill. Nice gesture but not enough for me to recommend this place or ever return.
A cute sushi spot by Yonge and Carlton with rustic traditional Japanese decor. The staff here were friendly, and the service was efficient. In addition to physical menus they have tablets attached to the table where you can order from. The sushi was very good for the price. However, I would have preferred 13 different nigiri pieces in the dinner set rather than multiple pieces of the same type of fish. Additionally, the salad could have been fresher and crispier. Overall a great sushi spot for solo diners, and casual outings.
Decided to try a new sushi place on UberEats and extremely glad we gave Gurume a try. Sashimi was fresh, not fish at all and all the toppings that came with it paired really nicely. Sushi was good, rice was perfectly spider roll was delicious. What we got: Spider roll Sashimi and sushi for 2 (comes with 2x soup and salad)
Yummy sushi sashimi dinner. So tasty and fresh that it reminded me of my trip to Japan. The flavors and freshness are spot on!
Solid sushi and sashimi set for 2 for just under $30 per person+tax/tip (included soup and salad). Sashimi and sushi is fresh though maybe one small piece of fish was slightly fishy but overall it was a satisfying meal. I would be happy to return when I'm in the area for a sushi fix. It was easy to find a seat around 6pm walking in on Saturday. They also have enclosed booths for a more private experience. When I was there seems like a hotspot for tourists and families. Service was seamless.
Ok, I was skeptical when I only read 4 & 5 star reviews, but tonight's dinner made a believer out of me. We dropped in for a weekday dinner as my sashimi loving daughter requested Japanese for dinner. We ordered a dynamite roll (10/10), 18 pc sashimi dinner (15/10), 8pc scallop aburi hako (8/10), 9 pc sashimi appetizer (12/10), veg tempura (not pictured but 8/10) and 1 order each of Madai and Escolar a la carte sashimi. The variety of fish was great and the quality was ridiculously good. Most of the sashimi came topped with extra garnish that added so much extra flavour and truly elevated Gurume to a 5 star place for me. This is not your run of the mill korean/japanese restaurant as their sashimi & sushi are at par with even the highest end sushi shops I've been to. We left the restaurant with full bellies and happy to have found a real gem. Looking forward to returning to try their other offerings!
Excellent and super speedy service. The food was light, healthy and delicious. I could easily eat here daily. The decor is incredibly cute inside creating semi private little coves for tables.
I ordered the Combination Tray M for pickup. Friendly lady on the phone. Keep in mind they open at 4 pm Mon-Thurs; 12 pm for Friday and the weekend. The platter was a hit! My family enjoyed it. The variety was what was really nice; as you can see, there's many different cuts and choices. I think the 3 rolls they picked were spicy salmon, shrimp tempura with cucumber, and a crab roll. All were good! The slices of salmon belly were a welcomed surprise. Excellent wasabi. At a price of ~$118 after tax, for the variety and quality, it's a good deal! I'm from NJ, USA, and $118 CAD (~$87 USD) cannot get me a platter like this at home!
Monday 12:30pm I was starving and had to eat something light before my meetings . I opted for the salmon lovers lunch special. It came with 4 nigiris , sashimi and 6pcs salmon maki and soup . There were a lot of options on the menu but had to make a quick decision based on timing ( what's the fastest best thing to order ). When I walked into the restaurant, it was a good surprise , love the feel of the place , it reminds me of the show Tokyo diner , its small, cozy , well decorated Japanese style with loads of bamboos . I was welcomed by a nice hostess / waitress . While waiting she offered and served me water ( that's what you call customer service but maybe only in Canada haha, it's not a common occurrence in nyc ). The place looks inviting , simple , clean ( though I didn't use the bathroom which is a good gauge of a restaurant). Summary - happy with my order but wished the rice was a bit more soft. I'll definitely try to come back before I leave to try the other dishes if I have time .
Gurume Sushi is conveniently located steps away from Yonge & College subway station, and right across from Toronto Metropolitan University. I love the ambience of this restaurant - it has a wooden accent interior and Japanese booth-style seatings which make it more intimate when dining for two or with a small party. Inside each booth, there are hooks where you can hang up your jackets. You can order from the touch-screen tablet at each table, or regularly from a hard-copy menu. All the food came fairly quickly and they were all fresh, high quality, and tasty. I could see why this place got into "Yelp's Top 25 Places to Eat" in 2023, and why it has a high average rating among Yelpers. I liked that the Garden Salad contained mostly dark green leafy vegetables (including spinach) instead of iceberg lettuce. The dressing was typical but pretty good. The Rainbow Roll was average, but the Sashimi Dinner (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, scallops, and a few other fish types) was excellent. It came with a small salad and miso soup. I liked that some of the sashimi had fried onions and a bit of garlic sauce as topping. Aburi Saba was disappointing - mostly rice with only a very small and thin slice of saba (mackerel) on top, and an even smaller piece of shiitake mushroom that you could barely taste. Unagi Donburi was okay... very thin slices of unagi on top of rice. The Bibimbap was good with a decent amount of vegetables (lettuce, shredded carrots, zucchini, bean sprouts) and shredded egg omelette (instead of sunny-side-up fried egg like in the bimbimbaps in most Korean restaurants). You can get the Bibimbap to be vegan / vegetarian by ommitting the meat or ordering the tofu version, and you can also get the spicy sauce on the side. All the rice bowls (including the Donburi and Bibimbap varieties) came with miso soup.
Gurume Sushi in Toronto delivers a delightful dining experience that combines authentic Japanese flavors with a cozy, intimate atmosphere. The menu offers a variety of down-to-earth Japanese dishes, each prepared with care and attention to detail. The classic, partitioned dining booths add a unique touch, creating a sense of privacy and comfort, making it perfect for both small groups and couples. The staff is attentive, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable meal from start to finish. Highly recommended for anyone seeking quality sushi in a relaxed setting. Saluti
Maybe the best sushi I've ever had in Toronto... atleast the best I've had recently. I ordered the miso soup, and aburi salmon hako for lunch and both were amazing. A little heads up in case you're trying it for the first time: aburi salmon hako will have a little smoky taste due to it being torched! The service was friendly and incredibly, impressively fast. The interior is decorated perfectly with little Japanese style booths and wooden tables. Would be happy to come back here.
Stopped here during a trip and it was by far the best food I've had the whole time. Love the service and the atmosphere! The menu was also really diverse. Each dish was delicious and well. Would definitely come back here if I wasn't from out of town!
I had a chance to try out a new restaurant at Yonge and Carlton, Gurume Sushi. Admittedly, I'm not a big fan of sushi, or more accurately, raw fish. I did, however, try the California Roll, and Avocado Roll, and a Chicken dish with rice. Everything was delicious! Being an avid cook, I was fascinated to watch the chef prepare the sushi. His hands were quick and his knife was sharp! It's definitely an artform! read more

On the more pricier side, but you get your money's worth for more premium sushi selection & ingredients. TOTALLY WORTH IT IMO, especially since I've ordered from them twice in just a few days now haha :p What drew me in was their SCALLOPS. It's surprising in Toronto that not a lot of sushi places offer scallops or chopped scallops. Their unique maki rolls also peaked my interest. Creamy scallop rolls (5/5) - OMG. HUGE CHUNKS OF FRESH SCALLOPS. SAUCEY. MUSHROOMS. Absolutely delicious and easily a favourite I would reorder. Aburi Scallop Hako (4/5) - torched creamy sauce & scallops on top of pressed rice with a chunk of shrimp in the middle. Wish the rice was a bit more flavourful and pressed firmer. Vege Mountain Roll (4/5) - loved this unique butternut squash 2-ways (fried crisps and puréed) roll. I liked the refreshing corn too (wished they topped it off with more) Spicy Kani Roll (4/5) - spicy salmon with shrimp tempura with fried crispy leeks ! Sunomono Salad (2.5/5)- not exactly what I expected... it's not your traditional sunomono bc it didn't have any noodles. It was majority thick seaweed and small frugal chunks of shrimp and crab shreds. Couldn't really detect the octopus. Gyoza (3.5/5) - pork fried Gyoza with drizzled sauce on top TIP#1: They have takeout specials % off. TIP#2: With every take-out order I've had so far, they've given COMPLIMENTARY gyoza's. So sweet of them :) TIP#3: Since it's COVID and takeout is the only option, I highly recommend re-heating the maki rolls/gyoza's at 350 degrees for ~5minutes. Makes everything more crisper and flavourful. read more
I found Gurume Sushi on Yelp while looking for a restaurant within walking distance from my hotel. I was so happy when I saw the entrance and I instantly loved the vibe! The restaurant is quaint, cozy and comfortable. Much like I have experienced in Japan. They have an extensive menu and everything I had was so delicious. Their rolls were so fresh they melted in my mouth. The food came quickly and the staff was very friendly and courteous. If I am ever back in the area, I will definitely return! read more

I think this is really a spot that is underrated in Toronto, and has great quality food items while it is not very well known. It has the traditional sushi environment with some booths, that are hard to find nowadays. Given the environment with a booths, it means that there is some less seating available. I find that all the items are incredibly fresh, and it's made the quality of a superior Japanese restaurant where the items would surely cost more. It has a great central location in downtown core near Carlton and Yonge street, adjacent to many busy streets, still has a relaxed vibe given such a central location. The menu has lotta items, including Bento boxes, some Korean food, and of course sushi. They also have a variety of cocktails that are all very surprised at around the $10 range. Would easily come back. read more

Went for in person dining this time and it was delicious! Bulgogi was so tender and flavourful. Sushi was great, Salmon was fresh, avocado was perfect. Tempura was crunchy and not oily. All and all great place for great food. Will come back read more
Cute little restaurant on Carleton. They don't take reservations, so expect a lineup wait time. But oh! It's worth it. We ordered: 1. Shrimp tempura - lightly battered and not greasy. 2. Sashimi dinner - a variety of seafood from different types of fish to scallop. So fresh! 3. Tako wasabi - this dish is the one that's foreign to me. It's raw octopus pieces in wasabi juice. It was so good that it brought tears to my eyes, and I thought I would breathe fire through my nose. After all the initial reaction, there is a gentle after taste of sweetness. My friend aptly observed that this dish will relieve your stressful day by making you momentarily forget the troubles of the world lol. Overall the service was very prompt. The servers were very attentive as they kept coming back to see if we were still doing ok and to clear out the dishes. I guess it's their indirect way to hurry us along so that they can seat the next diners. That's how it is with a small space and limited tables. But totally worth the food. read more

Had the bento box (bulgogi), sake, and edamame. Everything was great! The bulgogi was flavorful, Salad had a nice dressing, the tempura was crispy. We had to put our name down for a table of 2 and had a 30 minute wait. Service was very helpful! I am surprised that this place isn't more well known, but I'm thankful this place is here and will keep it a hidden gem for as long as possible. read more

Great little restaurant with nice cubby holes where you can enjoy fantastic sushi's in privacy. Welcoming staff, great customer service, and delicious food! read more
The Best Japanese food I've had in years. Even the miso soup was a richer, more flavourful offering than usual. The Unagi was excellent. It didn't need a bunch of sugary sauce covering it up because it was so fresh, and thankfully that didn't happen. The tempura was crunchy, flavourful and had excellent veggie choices. It also came in a paper box instead of a Styrofoam box which I am very grateful for. The salad also came in a paper container, I just needed a paper lid and the miso soup could've come in a paper container as well for sustainability because Japanese food is traditionally really poor at sustainability - - let's aim for no plastic! They're halfway there! I would give five stars if I knew where the fish came from and if it was sustainably caught/wild/farmed but nothing about this was mentioned on the menu. Yes it's a little pricier but it's way worth it! This is a step up. Thank you. read more
My local sushi spot!! Love this place so much -- the sushi is fantastic and tastes so fresh! It is never fishy and is always prepared beautifully. They even have my name listed as a contact so they know exactly who I am when I call haha. read more
I found this restaurant on Google and the previous name was DIAO Japanese restaurant .. they told me they recently changed their name to Gurume. We ordered the Salmon Bento Box $20.95 and also Sashimi Dinner $24.95. 20% off was given for the grand opening. I have to say, the food quality here is amazing. I haven't had a satisfy Japanese meal in a long time. The Sashimi was so fresh, and tasty. It all came with miso soup and salad. They gave us a a free appetizer Gyoza, and few pieces of sashimi which was also very fresh!! The salmon from the bento box was huge piece! Not only size but quality was excellent, salmon was thick and juicy and not dry at all! It was the best dinner in a long time. Last time I went across the street and paid almost the same price , but quality and quantity of food was not even on par. Sorry I couldn't take better pics.. read more

Phonemenal yet completely unassuming sushi spot on a busy, bustling (& honestly, pretty sketchy) street. The waitress was lovely & so sweet as she seated us immediately in a cute, little, intimate wooden booth. The menu was a bit overwhelming but we got right down to it, ordering a cold Ginjo sake & perusing the menu. For starters, we chose the Vegetable Gyoza & the Tuna Tartare. Dumplings were good but the tartare was some of the BEST i've ever had!!! For the sushi, we went with the Aburi Ebi Hako (ebi , tempura shrimp, garlic mayo, unagi sauce, spicy sauce), Spicy Salmon Dragon (dynamite roll with spicy salmon, tempura bits, and jalapeño on top (unagi sauce, spicy mayo), Creamyscallop Roll (scallop, mushrooms, fish roe, green onion, creamy garlic sauce, and cheese on top of california roll, unagi sauce, spicy mayo). Such interesting textures, flavours & combinations. Definitely some of the best sushi i've ever had! read more

Comfortable Japanese-style place (although not Japanese run), service was fairly quick. Had the sashimi lunch ($19) - sashimi was fresh and tasted better than I had expected. California roll was not that good as the rice was not very flavourful. Portion size wasn't that big but the quality is worth the price. read more

I had the nigiri plate with miso and a salad. Everything was so fresh and delicious. I would definitely recommend this place and plan to go back. It's small, seats maybe 25 people. I got lucky and got a table right away. Everyone else coming in had to wait so be warned it's popular with limited seating. read more

Ordered their Aburi Salmon Hako ($13) & sushi sashimi dinner ($24) and wow this place is fresh compared to other sushi places at a similar price point (considering I'm from Vancouver this is a pretty high compliment)! Beautiful presentation and flavors, just a little difficult to park for pickup during rush hours. They have a grand opening special of 20% off your order until Dec 18. Highly recommend and will return. read more
We've been here a few times and considering it's take out only, it's been pretty good. The salmon and tunas have been really fresh. We ordered the Sushi dinner for 2. It came with 2 salads and 2 miso soups. They do allow substitutions for 1 of the rolls and you would be asked to pay the difference. read more

Fantastic, outstanding, delicious succulent sushi/sashimi!!!!!! I had the sushi/sashimi lunch combo. Everything excelled. Miso, great. Salad, great. Free beef gyoza....great. The sushi/sashimi assortment was even better than great. The service was great. I got help with what I wanted to have, told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I walked to Tim Hortons for a coffee and when I came back everything was packaged nicely like a gift set! I ate it in my hotel room and thought this the best meal I have had in weeks. Great Place to get take out from!!!! read more
