I visited this place on Valentine's Day and ordered the sushi omakase and chirashi don, bento style meal. The tempura was underwhelming, some items like a large carrot, seemed overly thick and unappealing, while the shrimp tempura was too thin. The sushi comes pre brushed with soy sauce, but it was overly sweet. The scallop tasted fishy, and the bento style plate took over 30 minutes to arrive after we finished the sushi. The bento plate didn't have much on it just soy marinated egg, a small salad, and not much else to enjoy. The sauces on the main proteins were all too sweet. The worst part, unfortunately, was the service. The older Asian female servers were rude and unprofessional. Requests were ignored or pretended to be unheard, and it took an unnecessarily long time to receive our togo boxes after paying. Overall, it made for a very unpleasant dining experience. read more

Sometimes what you are searching for is right there in front of you. This plaza is near my home and I frequent the Starbucks, the Omomo Tea Shop, the Trader Joes. Gurume is a new restaurant, and from the pictures, I thought it was a sushi and sashimi place. We discovered one of the very best Japanese restaurants around. The decor was wonderful. Each seating area was private and not crowded. There are a lot of angles, wood, windows, art, and style. The portions are huge and the food is perfectly prepared. Look at my pictures. Came here with a friend for an after work meal, and it was pretty good! It was my first time here, and I had heard about them on Yelp. We came around 9pm, and was still able to sit and order without feeling like we were rushed. We ordered the mixed tempura, fuego roll sub spicy tuna with crab meat, suki yaki, and takoyaki. Their menu offers a lot of variety, so it feels more like a Japanese restaurant overall, instead of just a sushi spot. The restaurant itself was really spacious, with a separate sushi bar, actual bar, and patio dining. Out of all of the items we tried, my favorite was the fuego roll which came with yellowtail and was spicy. I also really enjoyed the takoyaki, and how it came out super hot. This sushi spot is definitely more on the expensive side I'd say, but for the amount and quality of food you get, it's definitely worth the price. Parking was fairly easy here too. It's shared with a ton of other businesses, but you'll definitely be able to find parking. read more

Loved the interior decor and the water feature in front of the establishment. It was a bit hard to find parking, but eventually I found a spot. I really appreciated that the music was soothing and nothing annoyingly loud, too. It's hard to find places that are more calm and quiet these days. Service was also great and attentive, thank you for a great dining experience overall. I liked that the servers all checked up on us to ensure that we were attended to and didn't just ignore us. Pretty cool that they do that here. I fell in love with their Hokkaido Gurame roll, which has asparagus and real crab meat inside and features salmon and Hokkaido scallops on top with yuzu sauce. Just a party of flavors in your mouth! I like that their wasabi isn't just made of the powder kind either. This roll is reminiscent of a special nigiri creation from an authentic Japanese restaurant's Omakase that we've been to for my birthday recently, so it definitely is a huge favorite of mine. The chirashi don lunch special and premium chirashi don both come with miso soup as starters. The fish selection was superb and you can tell the quality and freshness in each bite. Simply, this place is my favorite spot for sushi and sashimi in Irvine. The fish quality is always fresh and the sashimi slices are thick and generous. The price is reasonable, a bit on the higher end, so definitely a place for special occasions. However, they do have affordable sushi sets and chirashi sets that are delicious. That tempura, they even used Japanese sweet potato unlike many restaurants that use the generic orange, sweet potato. I was initially curious about this restaurant because it offers omakase at a relatively fair price. However, after this visit, I would say that the price matches the experience. The interior design of the restaurant is interesting as there are separate sections (sushi bar, general dining area, bar, outdoors) and each section appears to be themed differently. It's interesting to look at, but it also feels very disconnected from one section to the next. They have shelves with decorations next to the tables but said shelves were extremely dusty. I ordered the sushi omakase ($50) that comes with a side salad and miso soup. The miso soup was good and the salad was fine for what it was. The omakase part came out all at the same time on one large dish. It's good for those who know what they like and want to save the best for last. However, the waiter just placed the entire dish on the table and went on to the next task. We didn't get any information on what each piece was and just had to guess. We turned it into a game to test our sushi knowledge. The fish to rice ratio was slightly off. There was a pretty large amount of rice per piece, but the rice was seasoned well. The fish was on the more firm side, but tasted fresh. The thing that made me give this place even 3 stars was the yuzu cheesecake. It's a more dense cheesecake and the yuzu flavor stood out. Everything was served well and the slices of fresh fish across the sushi were HUGE in comparison to the rice underneath. This can be good or bad depending upon how you like your sushi as the ratio is a bit off. My daughter and I went on a Wednesday afternoon (approximately 12:30 pm), and the wait didn't seem too bad (1 party of 4 & 3 parties of 2 ahead of us), so we put our name down and waited... and waited... and waited... The quality of the fish was very good and the rice to fish ratio was on point. The sushi rice was cooked well and seasoned nicely. Service was very good. The only reason why it did not receive 5 stars is there is no interaction or eye contact with the itamae's at the sushi bar. All the ordering is done completely through a server. Their phone is always busy, like it's not hung up. I called constantly for 2 hours, busy. I wanted to make a reservation. So we just decided to head over there. I told the host about the phone issue, she never acknowledged it and instead said, "even if our phone worked we don't take reservation on the same day". As she was saying that another customer walked by and said the same thing about the phone. Still the host did not acknowledge. Luckily I was persistent and the host "found" a table. Food is always great, that's why go there. Not an issue. Fix your phone and don't make the customers have to explain to you why we're couldn't make a reservation. For us, it checks all the boxes--amazing food, quality and attentive service & a perfect ambiance. We love their spicy edamame and their rolls are to die for! Our go-to favorites are the Hokkaido Gurume Roll, OMG Roll, and Fuego Roll--each one has such a unique and delicious flavor profile, very different in comparison to other sushi spots we have been to. Gurume Sushi also offers great cocktails. I personally love lychee, so the Daitoryo cocktail was a favorite for me! We've visited multiple times and every visit has been met with friendly, attentive service. Every employee wished us a good night on the way out! I enjoyed the omakase for its presentation but taste wise some dishes tasted the same, the salad we started off with had a citrus taste and for almost all the other dishes that had sauce tasted similar. I was kinda disappointed that we didn't get more sushi, it was mostly crudo style dishes. I would definitely opt for the sushi or sashimi omakase instead, we wanted to try their main omakase to see if it was well worth the money. I wouldn't say it was a waste, but I've had better omakases, the quality of fish is not to the highest standards so I wouldn't choose the Gurume omakase due to the lack of flavor profiles and quality of fish. And while the oyster looked very appetizing it didn't taste fresh, it was room temperature which didn't sit well with me. I do want to give this place another try and focus on their sushi/ sashimi omakase instead. Given that it is Korean owned I do understand that it has a Korean twist so I wasn't expecting much of an authentic sushi experience but it is always important that the quality of fish or oysters should always be fresh. Perhaps a cooler temperature to keep the protein cooler? Just a suggestion. The service was quick and the staff is friendly. I've tried this dish from a fair amount of restaurants but Gurume's is my favorite! Theirs seemed to have added ingredients (eg two versions of roe) and flavors that other restaurants don't. We went for late lunch and it was quiet. We were the 3rd table in the entire restaurant with 2 servers readily waiting the table to clear plates, trash, refill drinks. Service was amazing. Food was beautifully presented as seen in the pictures and the taste is just as amazing. Definitely high quality fish used for each dish prepared and love the generous serving sizes for each dish. Considering it's an omakase, the price of $100 per person wasn't bad at all. I've tried a few omakase restaurants, but for the price, it's definitely quite delicious.
