I have huge respect for anyone who makes a good goat curry, home style. I had ordered the Lamb curry but they were out of lamb the other day, so very skeptically I settled for the goat, assuring myself not to have high expectations because not everyone gets goat meat right. I am a British punjabi woman and since I moved to Boston last year I cannot for the life of me find a decent Pakistani/North Indian food place that tastes authentic and not altered for western tastebuds. This is the first asian food delivery that has invoked a sense of home cooking and authentic flavour. The cumin and spice level is *PERFECT*. It's not exactly my grandmas biryani (noone can cook better than her) but the lamb biryani here is as close as I have tasted. I won't be ordering from anywhere else now! read more

Great food for a great price! Went there for a quick bite to eat the other night and loved the meal of chicken curry and the lamb dish. The sides were also well done with some great spices and came with the best (I'm not sure what it is called but it is a flat bread) that I have ever had. The place is more designed for take out and only had a handful of tables and chairs. However, the ambiance made up for it completely. It seems like a family run place and there were the cutest kids playing inside and outside the restaurant. Also got to meet a lot of cute pups while eating on the porch. I went for dine in the other day and for $36.00 ordered two veg samosas, chicken biryani, and a chicken karahi/saag paneer combo. They gave achar, a great yogurt raita that was nice and chunky, and sauces for the samosas. I also got chicken pakoras but they weren't impressive I felt the batter and pieces were too thick. Over the past month this Indian hole-in-the-wall has gained quite a reputation with yelp users for quick, delicious eats at shockingly low prices. (motions to girl nearby to chat) Now, are you what they call a "yelper"? Girl: Why, yes! What gave me away? (She points to a blue t-shirt with a yellow and red flower looking graphic and smirks.) Reporter: And what is it that yelpers do, exactly? Girl: Well, basically we enjoy exploring all the cool things the city has to offer and share our opinions online with a community of folks that we often hang out with. Reporter: Sounds like fun. And is that how you came to find out about this place? Girl: Indeed it was. I'd seen it on the welcome page for weeks in the top restaurant category, and had to make the pilgrimage. Reporter: Well, how was it? We've heard people complaining there's no where to sit. Does that bother you? Girl: Not at all. They close fairly early, 7:30pm, so I had to hop on the T right after work to give us enough time for the 15 minute walk from Davis. The menu consists of a few staples and a special, both veggie and meat, so it helps the decision making process move along quickly. In five minutes flat, and $20 later, we were awarded with two main dishes, two veggie sides, samosas and mango lassis. Then after a brisk stroll to the park at Powder House Square, you have the warm, scrumptious makings of a picnic. Climb to the top of the hill, and the sun will be setting in the horizon as you're taking your last bites. It's rather romantic. Reporter: Just lovely. And is this the only way to enjoy Guru's creations? Girl: Nope, they deliver combo lunches to nearby drop-off points in Cambridge. If you've got more than 8 orders they'll go wherever. But I'd recommend dropping by so you get to see the owner's adorable three year old daughter who fetches dixie cups of waters for patrons. She's precious. Remember The Guru? Yeah it sucked. Heather Graham's hot and everything but that movie was for girls. Now what about The Love Guru? Mike Myers has been off the radar recently but has made me laugh, somehow though the trailer for his latest just looks terrible. And Guru The Caterer? On yeah, he's fantastic - he even has a nicely coiffeured mustache to gawk at, facial-hair fans. Unlike the lame comedy versions on cellulose though, he's not going to sort out your love life with 'hilarious consequences', instead - this guy will fill your belly with the best Indian food in Boston and for very little cash as well. This is authentic Indian food. Ok, I've never been to India but he told me that and he has a nice mustache so I believe him. What I'm used to is amazing curries in England that are 'banquet food'. Stuff like naans and all that. Well, not here sadly. But by not monkeying around with all that stuff that never seems to work when they try it here in America, Guru can instead make a handful of dishes each day that are cooked with lavish care and are a bucket of satisfy. So throw away the choices (who likes choice anyway? choice is overrated) and let the Guru guide your mouth to some fuckin A cooking. Bitch a little while you're there about early closing time and the lack of onion bajis, but don't be too much of a chump because you're going to get served and you want it you slut. read more

Laura says, "Maybe they want it to feel like India in here, and that is why it is so hot." I say, "But I am not in India! I am in America! So it shouldn't be this hot in here!" Even one of the cooks/cashiers was pretty pumped when my friend Negin went to open up the door to this greenhouse like restaurant, to let in a bit of the cold Boston winter air. You could see the smile on his face grow by the second, when that cool air poured into this place. I really hope a) for their heating bill and b) for the sake of the cooks and staff that have to work there all day, that the immense heat we felt, literally almost sweating while eating our food, wasn't because their heater was on way too high...There are huge windows at this restaurant, and the sun just seems to penetrate them, but man, maybe invest in some better shades? No one should be that hot indoors, unless they are at a sauna! And by restaurant, I mean they have two tables total. Not really a place you go to in order to have a sit down meal. Most people come here for take out. And don't come here if you are expecting the big bread like naan with your meal. This is the first Indian place I have ever been to that serves naan that really seems to resemble tortillas. So not sure if I can be mad that I didn't get the type of naan I wanted, but the thicker naan just picks up the food better! So be prepared to use a fork and spoon here. Those things aside, and if you can manage to eat here without sweating into your food, the food itself is cheap and pretty tasty! Some of the better Indian I've had in Boston so far. For $7.95 you can get a lunch combo with a meat dish, rice, naan, and one veggie side dish. $6.95 for this if you want a vegetarian entree instead. And the amount of food they give you is MORE than enough for lunch. You will definitely have leftovers. There are not a ton of options on each day, since their menu changes all the time, but anyone that comes here should be able to find something. The pluses? Their rice is just plain awesome. I don't know how they do it, but it is some of the best rice I've had at a restaurant hands down. Their chicken palak is also pretty good too! I wish I had gotten a bit more chicken in my entree though, it was mainly just the sauce, but that sauce tasted more flavorful than the palak paneer I got as my veggie side dish. I should have gotten their aloo or their potatoes since they actually came with a bit of spice on them, so I'll be sure to do that next time, because, yes, despite the fact that I am pretty sure this was a negative calorie meal since I was soooo hot while eating here, I would definitely come back here again, just maybe in a tank top :-) Really a 3.5 star, but rounded up because that palak sauce was just so tasty! Have you ever been to a bank with one of those drive-thru windows where you have to put your deposit in those fancy pneumatic tubes? I want one that goes from Guru straight to my apartment. I wish fax machines had the ability to fax food from Guru to my office. I'd settle for an email foodtachment. Sometimes I think about installing a zip line from my apartment to Guru, as well as a gondola system to take me back. I've measured the height drop and I think it would be safe. Last week I called a bike messenger service to deliver my order, but they would not accept the request because it is only 287 meters from my apartment. One time I bought a remote control hovercraft and an iRobot Roomba and combined them into an autonomous Guru Delicacy Delivering Device (GD^3), but it was run over by some jerk 5 feet out of my apartment on a food pickup run. Recently I organized a flash mob on Craiglist to take up all of the space on Broadway between my apartment and Guru so I could crowd surf all the way there. It actually worked and I made it there in one piece, but on the way back with my food the crowd turned into a hungry mob and stole my order. Over the summer I stole a Segway from one of those stupid Segway tour companies in Boston, took it to the same garage that Xzibit / MTV's Pimp My Ride use, had it outfitted with hydraulics, spinner rims, 29 separate LCD panels, a crème fraîche dispenser, and a bubble machine (next to the exhaust because this thing runs on jet fuel now), but it broke down 5 feet out of my apartment on the inaugural pickup run because I hit some stupid hovercraft robot thing. I am currently working on a way to teleport food from Guru straight to my face. Will update review soon. read more

I was confused when I first walked in; two tables and one menu that sat at the counter. I went up and saw four items listed under "Meat" and four items listed under "Vegetarian/Vegan." I asked for the full menu and was told I was looking at it. The menu changes frequently, if not daily. For $11 I got two entrees, rice, and bread (it's not naan, I think it's more South Indian cusuine) and vegetable samosas. The guy at the counter saw my confusion and guided me through their very simple and easy menu. The food is really good. The chickpea in spicy tomato sauce was unreal. Wow. I really like Indian food. I've eaten a lot of it in my time. But while I've always liked it, I've never absolutely loved it--it's never been on my list of all-time desert island foods. Until eating food from Guru. Specifically this chicken biryani. It's such a bland dish usually, I only hesitatingly ordered it at the enthusiastic recommendation of a patron. And wow: it blew my mind completely. It's like getting assaulted by savoriness. It's spicy without being overly hot. It's umami without being aggressively salty. I just... I just can't get over this dish. Also on the menu today, I got to taste saag paneer (very spicy, almost the consistency of a spinach emulsion), and the aloo mattar (peas and potatoes) tasted, I guess smooth and clean would be the best way to put it. Where else can I find out about a hole-in-the-wall (litteraly) in Somerville called "Guru the Caterer" that serves the most delicious, inexpensive, indian food you can find! Hmm. Lots of yelp hype. Always wonder why, sometimes it's the deals they offer fore good yelp reviews. Not here. It's deserved 1000%. As a chef, this is the kind of place i actually enjoy eating at. Why do i go out, to actually eat the kind of quality ethnic food people of Indian descent actually eat in their homes. Selection: Small choice of about 6 meats and 6 veggie entries. My brother and i go for the Goat Curry and the Chicken Dilruba?? Some Bindhi (Okra) and Paneer Saag (Spinach with Cheese). Homeade Tandoor Roti, apricot chutney, and some of the most spearminty chutney and 2 perfect obviously homeade Samosas. Quality: I've eaten and cooked some great indian food in many parts of the country. All the food was cooked with a quality not seen in other boston area indian spots. Whole Bay leaf, peppercorns show that they only mess with fresh Garam Masala to season their lovely curries. The ghee comes on nicely to flavor but is mellow as all the foods have just the right amount of fat sans the layer of grease you see on so many indian dishes at other places. Everything was great but the Okra curry was absolutely unbelievable. The goat was better than most, but the chicken was actually not overcooked which is almost always the case at other indian places.This is the best indian food i've ever eaten at a restaurant anywhere. Service: I met the owner and i will just say. this is the kind of attitude that i love love love to see. Passion and love of food you can't fake. He let us know that Theirs a mother cooking these roti all day long the real way. A real nice guy. Price: $21.00 for everything and it came out in less than 10 minutes. I've lived literally one minute away from Guru for more than two years, and I tried them for the first time tonight. I cannot believe that I deprived myself of such cheap, convenient deliciousness for two years. A friend of mine who used to live in Teele has been berating me about this since she heard that I had never been. Now I see why. I was living a lie. Guru is easily the tastiest Indian food I've paid for in Boston. For the uninitiated, this is how you Guru: pick a combo (chicken, goat/lamb, fish, or veg). Then pick an entrée. Pick a vegetable side. Wait five to seven minutes. Run home with your Guru in hand. Shove your selected entrée and app into your mouth with roti and rice. Repeat. For my inaugural Guru-experience, I got the goat curry and veggie keema. First of all, for $10, I got food for at least two meals. Awesome. Second of all, hermagerdsotasty. The goat was tender and spicy and everything a good curry should be. The veggie keema, which I'd never had before, was excellent. According to the menu, they make it with "soy granules, peppers, peas sautéed wtih ginger, onion, spices." Alls I knows is, it made me very happy in body and spirit. I'll be back to try more of what Guru has to offer, and I'm guessing that when I do, they'll get that last star from me. read more

So this place keeps popping up as the number one yelp spot in Somerville. I finally broke down and gave it a shot. I even had to drive to get there. The verdict: Not worth the drive. If you live next door (and perhaps you are a Tufts student), I'm sure you go to Guru at least once a week. It's cheap. It has that warm family vibe and the food is decent. But if you don't live next door... and you have a fair-enough Indian joint near your house... then trust me. You need not bother making the trek to Ball Square. Having read so much about Guru on Yelp, I decided to take the joyous pilgrimage on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon. We called ahead of time to find out the offerings of the vegetarian palette (I had a picky vegetarian for company) and found out that they had 4. So we get there around 12.30 pm and there was just one couple ahead of us in line and no one behind us. Once it was our turn; we found out to much to our disappointment that one of the veggie dishes mentioned on the phone wasn't on the menu. When we asked for it they said it wasn't for the regular menu but for a catering order they had, but will give it to us nonetheless. We are happy again!! So we get our order for one vegetarian meal and one chicken tikka masala meal. Instead of picnicking at the near by park we took it home to enjoy. Being an Indian appreciating Indian food cooked outside of home is very challenging, but Guru didn't let me down. They have maintained the authenticity of Indian cooking with distinct flavors in each preparation unlike the rest of the pack. Our meal: Saag Paneer - Delectable Aloo Mattar - Surprisingly and remarkably fabulous Chana Masala - Good (slightly greasy) Chicken Tikka Masala - Extraordinarily delish & tender chicken (slightly greasy) Rotis - Soft and excellent Basmati Rice - Regular Pickle - Good Portions - A meal and half or even two for the price of one ... I says pretty darn good!! Missing - Chopped raw red onions (Ok! That's an Indian thing ... but it does bring out the flavor) Absolutely torn between 4 and 5 stars .... No Seating .... Let's judge a place by their dessert because Indian desserts are in such poor showing at Indian joints. Guru's kheer schools all other kheers. I make my own kheer and I know how time consuming and attentive you have to be to stir that pot, boil down the milk and spice it. Oh, theirs is heaven! TERRIBLE! I've tried most of the Indian places in town because I like the stuff. This is not the worst, but close. Sorry all you other big star reviewers, but you guys either have no palate or no comparative experience with Indian food or simply do not understand a five-star rating system. (which why is the average review on yelp is 4 stars and thus useless much of the time) This place serves (if you can call it that) cafeteria style volume fast food. And it is not so cheap either: I'd give it three stars if the prices were half of what they are because we need to weigh all parameters and not just taste. But I see no reason to give more than one star and neither should you. If you are a two star plus reviewer for a place like this, you have below average standards and are a worthless person who probably still watches TV and thinks the military is a good thing. I suggest you check out the Waffle Houses in South Carolina for your kind of food and your kind of people. But if you like bland baby food pap that you can walk out the door with in 5 minutes, THIS IS YOUR PLACE because YOU are a person who prizes volume over quality and I look down on you. read more

The rice: ghee-ed, salted, and spiced to fluffy, white perfection. Who came up with the idea to steam rice with cardamom? A GENIUS! The bread: instead of naan, they serve two rotis with every combo, lightly greased. I usually prefer naan, but the rotis are lighter and make the meal extra homey. The kheer: nobody has said anything about the rice pudding but I think it's the most amazing pudding in Boston, the Hasty variety notwithstanding. Extra cardamom and extra condensed milk make Guru kheer taste like liquid peda. The people: The staff is always super friendly and patient. They know all the regulars by face if not by name, which makes a visit feel like going home, especially with the adorable kids scurrying about. The value: $8 to $12 gets you a combo meal that serves 1+ grown man with high metabolism, and 2+ 5'2" Asian girls. That's less than McDonald's price per meal, and you get fresh food with loads of delicious veggies. These are a few of my favorite things. In my opinion Guru is more like restaurant food than homemade. It's much greasier than any of the Indian-mom meals I've had in my time. Still, it's definitely an all-time favorite of mine. read more

Three words: nom nom nom. This place freaking rocks. As you'll read in the other reviews here, there is a menu that changes slightly from day to day. I usually get the tiki masala which is soooo yummy. And they give you rice, a side and bread too. All for 7.50. SO good, and there's a chance you'll have a bit left over as the portions sizes are great for the price. It's not a sit-down place. It's almost literally a hole in the wall, and you're in and out in under five minutes. They only have a few things on the menu (usually one chicken, lamb and vegetarian dish -- I think) so ordering's quick. The sides change I think...one time I got some delicious potatoes, another time I got some lentil concoction. Parking is street parking, but they do have a couple of 15-minute spots outside, so I've never had a problem with that. The first time I went, we saw that the Web site said they closed at 7:30. So we got there at 7:29. But the sign on the door said they closed at 7:00pm. Which is probably just to keep the strays out. That's the only downside -- how early they close. Anyway. If you're looking for a cheap date, grab a couple of meals from Guru and a dollar video from Red Box and you're all set. read more

The other night, as we left Guru with another bag full of curried goodness, the line stretched well onto the sidewalk. A police officer on meter patrol stood gawking on the curb, and asked us what, exactly, was IN that little place that had 20 people patiently waiting on a hot July night, ten minutes before closing? We explained: it was merely heaven in a pakora, and she had to go in, now, if she wanted to feel truly alive. She got in line. We also love the place because Pushpinder and his family work as hard as his staff, who seem extremely happy, and everyone who works in the place exudes authentic friendliness. Um, yeah, it might be a cult--but seriously, just go and get some chicken saag and you won't care anymore. read more

It's places like Guru that make me thankful I've joined Yelp. I've walked by this unassuming little take-out place countless times and thought nothing of it, but when I looked up Boston's best "Cheap Eats" on Yelp, I was led right to it. It's ranked so highly for a reason. For $7.95 you can get a chicken entree (I chose the chicken and mushroom curry), a veggie side (I opted for the saag paneer), rice, and two pieces of roti. You can't beat that (and if you can, please let me know). I also got a side of veggie pakoras (among the best I've had) and an order of bread pakora. The owner, who is basically the nicest guy ever, told me I had to try this last dish, and I'm glad I listened. He actually gave it to me for a discounted price because they were out of samosas. The one condition was that I had to try it there and let him know what I thought. I can only describe the pakora as a fried sandwich filled with potatoes, and I know that makes it sound repulsive, so please just believe me when I say it is delicious. Dip it in a little cilantro-infused raita and...mmm I'm salivating all over again. The owner (whose name escapes me, unfortunately) says he loves to try new things with traditional Indian dishes and accompaniments (like the aforementioned raita and a smokey tamarind unlike any I've ever had), and for the most part he is very successful. The only reason I can't give "the Guru" five stars is his saag paneer. I like spinach, and I usually like saag, but this dish was hard to stomach. It was strangely lacking in spice, making it taste like little more than stewed spinach. Oh well, I'll just have to be sure to avoid it when I go back. Oh yes, I will be back. : ) read more

This will be probably nothing new, as all my preceding reviews already have stated. Awesome place which is unfortunately somewhat far away and not within reach of the normal hotspots. Regardless it seems to have a very loyal fanbase :) If it wasn't for all the yelp reviews I would have probably never step foot into this joint but I'm glad I did. Now to the food, the system is that there are 4 combos (chicken, lamb/goat, veggie, fish) which change every day. In addition you will get rice and rooti bread (not sure if spelled that right). I had chicken khorma and it tasted as indian as it gets. The only place which I would call as authentic is probably only Punjabi Dhaba in Inman Sq. Anyways, if you haven't been it's worth the trip. After seeing this place on Yelp for YEARS, I finally decided to head up to Teele Square to check it out. I brought my friend and tried not to delay the usual customers by thinking about our choices for two long. My friend got a veggie combo and I got the salmon curry, which was spicy and awesome. I think it was meant to be that I went here today for lunch..... I pull up and there is a spot outside with minutes still left! The service was friendly, fast, and they take credit.....A little weird at first, I am not going to lie....No tables, just a counter with one menu with 4 choices on it-2 veggie and 2 meat Vegetarian gets 2 veggies, rice, and bread-$6.50 Non-veggie gets chicken or meat with a veggie, rice and bread.$7.50 It was fresh. The bread is a cooked tortilla....it is not the nan that I am used to but....besides that....soooooooooo good for the $$$$. This is easily the best Indian food in the greater Boston area. Here's why: the food reminds me of home. Pushp's food puts all the other much higher priced places to shame. We haven't been to Kashmir, Tamarind Bay, or any of the others since finding out about Guru the Caterer. Punjabi Dhaba? We'll probably never go again. We took some food home to my in-laws when we visited out of state and the response was: "we would never cook at home if we could just buy food like this." Yeah, it's that good. Get the samosas. They're made incredibly well. Eat them fresh while hot. Don't be shy. We do it while driving back home. The rotis are really nice and the tomato based subzis are to die for. Pushp is incredibly friendly. You can call your order in ahead if you're in a hurry. He'll deliver a minimum of 5 orders to your office if you can't make it to Somerville by 6:30. I absolutely love this place! It is THE BEST INDIAN FOOD in greater Boston! Hands-down - I am a Bengali and I love to eat, i would like to think that makes me a bit of an expert here;-) The food is so flavorful and the spices are perfectly balanced. My only complaint (being the Cambervillian that I am) is I wish there was an option to eat on-site that didn't involve so much packaging, plastic bags, and styrofoam. I understand it helps them keep the prices low (around $7-$8 per dish - which by the way feeds two people eating appropriate portions). I live in the neighborhood so will absolutely be back, and often!!! read more
