Maybe I went on an off day? I stopped into Gurnee Donuts because I saw all of the good reviews here on Yelp. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly and helpful, but the donuts themselves just were not good. The Boston cream had maybe one tablespoon of cream inside. The chocolate glazed didn't have any flavor. The blueberry was just ok. I hate saying this because I love going to mom and pop shops, but honestly Dunkin Donuts is much better.

Gurnee Donuts is always great on ube weekends or regular weekdays. Donuts are always fresh, service always friendly, prices reasonable, and the place is always clean. Ube Weekends -- get there early!

I used to love this place! I would wake up early to get there and get some ube donuts before they ran out! But its been a couple years and I am in town so I decided to come in and get a does around 10 in the morning. This inside had a few chairs which people could sit inside. The server was very quick when taking my order. I walked in ans it looked the same as it was before. I ordered a dozen donuts and I was so shocked at how small they are now.. i got chocolate glaze, ube sprinkles, vanilla sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles and some Boston cream donuts. The donuts were smaller than I remember but using the same recipe so the flavor was more concentrated and they were way too sweet.. honestly they werent made with love.. another example of what happens when business prioritize profits over quality. So disappointing..

Gurnee Donuts is a gem! A small, family-owned business with super friendly and helpful service. We went in planning to grab just two donuts and left with a dozen--and a coffee! There's a steady flow of regulars, which says a lot. Great variety, fun flavors, and everything was fresh and delicious. You can tell they put care and love into what they do. We'll definitely be back!

I decided to try this place based on Yelp reviews. The shop is located in a strip center alongside several other ethnic restaurants and stores. I got a chocolate cake donut and an apple fritter. There are a couple of tables for those who want to sit and have coffee. The staff member who helped us wasn't particularly friendly, but he wasn't rude either. The donuts aren't labeled, so we had to ask about the options. Overall, the donuts were average--not the best, but not the worst.

It is located in a unit of a multi-use commercial building. Upon approaching, the location is clean and clear of any trash or hazards. Very small area in the front to sit and eat. The hours are clearly noted on the door. When entering the building, there was a sweet aroma that was inviting. The facility was clean with a display of donuts just in front of me and a cooler with drinks to the right. I was looking at the purple donut, which the kind gentleman advised was the "purple sweet potato" donut. The display is nice with purple frosting and purple sprinkles. He also advised that this is one of the biggest sellers. I hear this business is locally owned and operated. All of the donuts looked delicious in a nicely displayed. They offer long John's, crullers, sprinkled, glazed, honey buns, and many more. I purchased two of the purple sweet potato and an apple fritter. I was not too impressed with the purple sweet potato, but the apple fritter was delicious. The price, I'm not too sure about that. Roughly $10 for 3 items seems a bit steep.

I had to hit up Gurnee donuts because I was in the area on a Sunday morning. Most of the donuts sold were traditional. The raised dough was a little off on texture/taste and not so sweet. The cake and buttermilk were alright. I really liked their ube donut the most. It was soft, fluffy, and moist.

Gurnee Donuts is good but not something I would drive out of my way for often. If your coming from Chicagoland area like most of us, it could be an hour drive or more. My wife likes coming here cuz she's Filipino so she wants to contribute to her people in the small business community. I would say it's worth the drive if you're also heading to Six Flags, Gurnee Mills mall or the outlet mall in Pleasant Prairie, WI. We definitely make a day out of it for our shopping trips. The donuts are fresh & made daily, their ube selections are what we mostly desire but there's also other variety like a red velvet cake donut & cherry old fashioned which was surprisingly good as I don't eat much cherry of anything. They also had an ube cinnamon roll for once which I had to try, needless to say it wasn't to my liking..too sweet for me with the glaze then added cream cheese frosting & sugar sprinkles as well. Overall, I would recommend this establishment if you're a big sweet tooth fan & if you're Filipino, at least make the trip out here once just to satisfy your curiosity. All in all, I would say it is a definite must try if you're in the area or passing through Gurnee on the highway but not a solo reason to make the trip up here for.

Never again. The donuts are ok and there is wide variety and a unique selection not offered at other donut shops. My issue is with the help. This is a family run business. They need to get family members with a vested interest in the business to help and greet customers. People who will listen. They consistently make mistakes, giving the incorrect donuts. They fill the box behind the counter and out of view and then tape the box closed making it impossible to quickly check your order. Today makes the 3rd and 4th mistake they have made that I can remember. I will never step foot i to this place again. read more

After seeing it on Chicago's Best and reading all the reviews, finally convinced my hubby to take the 30 minutes drive to Gurnee Donuts to try them out. Super friendly. And the price is very reasonable. Got 2 ube and 1 glazed donuts, an apple fritter, Boston cream and they threw in old fashioned donut and it was $8. So far we only had the ube and apple fritter. Apple fritter was so good! The best I've had. Just enough crisp on the outside and so nice and moist and juicy (apples) on the inside. And the ube donut. Definitely different. But very good. Nice and fluffy. If these 2 are on point, I'm sure the others are too; and I'm looking forward to eating them. read more

Great place to carbo-load before you hit Great America! Small place, I don't think there was any seating. Located in a strip mall. Full disclosure: I showed up 20 minutes prior to close (2:00 PM) and asked for the "Closing Soon Special" (which isn't really a thing) and the guy behind the counter gave us three free donuts with our six donut purchase. Yes, that is affecting my review (deal with it). They have a great mix of old favorites (vanilla/chocolate donuts and long John's) as well as maple glazed (with bacon, if you like -- and I like!) and purple yam (so delicious!) with Oreo topping or plain. Lots of others, too. Just go check it out already. read more

Best donuts ever. Wait a minute, I need to repeat that last sentence to emphasize how much I mean it: best donuts ever. When it comes to donuts, I don't really need all the bells and whistles. For me, I find joy in your standard original glazed yeast donut. And it is seriously the best original glazed yeast donut you will ever taste. The consistence of the donut is soft and the combination of the dough and glaze just melts in your mouth. Ugh. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I know that many people come here for the ube donuts, which are also terrific. Definitely one of their staples and a must-try. That said, I really haven't had a donut here that didn't get hoovered down with such satisfaction. Yes, this place is a bit of a hike if you're not located in the north suburbs, but they do sell their donuts in select coffee shops in the city, as well as some other suburban locations. You must have one. Or two. Or ten of these donuts. read more

I've been having Gurnee Donuts since elementary school at O'Plaine school when it was called O'Plaine. A local favorites, a lake county household staple. Customer Service is always on point and this family business is always a feel good experience! I've used them for professional events as well and they are wonderful! I love those donuts!! read more

The donuts from Gurnee Donuts definitely live up to the hype. I've been trying to get my husband to go with me and it's finally the day! The main reason why I chose Gurnee Donuts, not only for their awesome Yelp reviews, but to try their Ube donuts. I read that they only have Ube donuts on the weekend, but we got lucky on our first try. THEY HAVE UBE DONUTS ON CHRISTMAS EVE, which wasn't on a weekend this year. My husband loved the Ube flavor donuts, however, I wished there was a stronger taste of it. It's just personal preference. I think I prefer original gazed donuts. We gotten a few of the original Ube donuts along with a few of the sprinkled ones. I didn't realize there were other varieties of the Ube donuts. I'll have to give that a try in the future. I really like the fruity pebbles on original donuts and the knotted donut logs/twists. Can't go wrong with classics. Donuts are so fresh, chewy, and soft. Since it was our first time there, they offered us an additional donut free of charge. My husband called it a bakers dozen. A dozen classic donuts will ring up at $12.99, but if you can a mix of classic and speciality, it will ring up more. Our first time, we did a mix of classic and speciality and it rang up to be about $20 with a medium black coffee. Our second time, it rang up to be about $15 for a dozen of classics and a small black coffee. They did offer us a military discount which I don't think they normally offer. The staff has always been helpful and nice. Overall, would continue to be a patron of Gurnee Donuts to get my donut craving fix. read more

Top notch donuts - alway fresh and lots of options to choose from - and if they don't have something in the case, maple glazed for example, sometimes they can whip one up from the stock in the back. They have a handful of donuts with neat/unique flavor combinations and all the staples (glazed, Boston creme, filled, powdered, coconut, etc). The glazed is among the best they have to offer because it tastes like a true yeast raised donut, has a nice glazed shell and gets the right amount of gooey when you take a bite. Perfect with a cold glass of milk or hot coffee. The only reason I don't give it five stars is I'm comparing to other donut shops in Chicagoland and it isn't quite to the level of Stan's or Do-Rite, but it also isn't far behind those at all - and it is worlds better than that run-of-the-mill chain donut place. read more

Atmosphere: 5/5 (super casual) Food: 5/5 Service: 5+/5 School consumes my life. Most days I debate sleeping that extra hour or eating a really nice meal. Well this morning, I was determined to get some good donuts. Cue Gurnee Donuts. I've heard good things about this place and the longer I stay here, the more it keeps coming up. I scrolled through the reviews and saw they sell out rather early so I set my alarm for 7am, determined to get their raved ube donut. When I walked in, I was greeted by 3 people behind the counter. There were a couple people in line with me but the workers were very efficient in getting everyone taken care of. At first, I was devastated thinking they ran out of Ube donut for the day but alas, I saw it behind the counter. Since I believe in treating myself, I asked for a dozen. My choices included: Red velvet, ube cake donut, maple bacon, and apple fritter, just to mention a few. The lady was putting out more donuts and when I asked what it was, she gave me one to try! Honestly, it might have been because I looked like a mess and she felt bad, but hey, that is still quite the customer service! Now the important part. The donuts were fresh and super chewy, just the way that I like them. Surprisingly, they tasted as good as they looked. I've never tried ube outside of halo halo (Filipino dessert) and I was pleasantly surprised. Since it was a cake donut, it helped cut out the sweetness and the coconut added a good nutty flavor. Overall: Want carbs? Want them beautifully arranged in a box? Want unique donuts you can't get at Dunkin Donuts? Well, I'd set your alarm because they open at 6:30. read more

I've had this place bookmarked on my Yelp for a really long time now and finally got around to checking this place out. I've heard and read so many positive things about their ube donuts so I was super excited to try them. I ended up trying the coconut ube, the glazed ube, the red velvet, and plain glazed. I reallyyyyy love donuts, but I thought they were all just ok. Maybe ube just isn't my thing. But I liked how all the donuts were really fluffy and moist in the inside. The one I ended up enjoying the most was the basic plain glazed surprisingly. The people running this place were really nice. Overall it was a good experience. read more

I was craving donuts today and heard about Gurnee Donuts. I am so happy I came. I got a half-dozen donuts and a honey lavender latte. The donuts were delicious and moist. My two-year-old approves. She loved the chocolate frosted with sprinkles. I loved the ube donut and strawberry the most. The honey lavender latte was great as well. I will definitely be back and earlier so I can try everything I want next time! read more

Stopped by before going to six flags for some donuts. For being around 10 am I was disappointed that they didn't have a lot to choose from. I ordered the fruity pebbles and a plain donut. Both were really good and tasted really fresh. Prices are good and you can pick more without breaking the bank. read more

I've been venturing further and further afield to try new apple fritters, and the latest excursion took me all the way to Gurnee. Every once in a while, on a random day off, a trip up or down 94 brings the promise of discovery...or disappointment. The flavor of this fritter was really good. It also had a nice crisp exterior and not too much glaze. The big problem was the interior, which was underdone to the point of being downright wet in the center. The fritter wasn't even that thick, maybe an inch at most. In contrast to the over-moist fritter, the chocolate-coconut cake doughnut was dry (or stale?) to the point of hardness. Hrm. And the chocolate icing was very, very sweet. I also tried a boston creme which was all right. If I lived in the vicinity, this would definitely be a regular stop--you've gotta support your local independent doughnut shop. Perhaps I would find that the wet/dry issues were an unfortunate fluke. But I can't see making another trip this far to find out. read more

I wish I could make another visit to this place, as I really enjoyed it. We got a chocolate covered red velvet donut, a blueberry donut, and one of their speciality ube donuts. They were awesome enough to throw in a few extra donut holes with my purchase! The red velvet donut was good and the thickness of the chocolate and how on point the chocolate glaze was made it good. The blueberry donut was a nice thick delicious cake donut. The Ube donut was something I never had before (I would like to actually taste ube now!) and I can't really pinpoint what it tastes like, but is a nice sweet donut and a tasty frosting. The staff was nice and it wasn't terribly crowded. I wish I could come back again in the near future! read more

Yum! Yum! Yum! My husband and I had to try Gurnee Donuts after we heard that they won Donut Fest not too long ago. It is a very unassuming place tucked away in a strip mall. I love that there aren't any gimmicks to it! It's a simple place with a couple of tables and that's it. I LOVE that it is family owned! :) The first time I went, we ordered a variety of donuts; cinnamon twists, traditional cake donuts, chocolate glazed, red velvet, Boston Cream, and of course...the award winning ube donuts! The cool thing about the Ube donuts is that you can get them plain or with a topping of toasted coconut, nuts, or just icing. To be completely honest...my favorite was the cinnamon twist! It is sooooooo yummy! I crave that donut!!!! It's nice and fluffy! Yummy! My tummy was really happy. I'm so sad that Gurnee isn't super close, so I can grab a donut more often. I guess it's good for the waistline! Haha! The donuts aren't pricey either. A lot of the gourmet donut places are like $3 for a donut...not this place! You can get a dozen donut holes for $2! I look for reasons to go out to Gurnee just so I can visit Gurnee donuts! :) You must go! read more

Super friendly service & while we were picking out our donuts we were offered the 'bad batch' of blueberry donuts & omfg they were scrumptious!! As a Filipino, I came here mostly to try the ube donuts but I got a variety of items to get a taste of everything. The ube donuts are definitely the best donuts that they have. The dough was so moist and soft it would practically fall apart in my hands when holding it. The ube flavor of the dough and icing was subtle yet perfectly balanced. The oreo or fruity pebble cereal toppings would accent the ube flavor well and give each donut a different flavor profile. The other donuts were a mixed bag. I tried almost every type they had and nothing was spectacular but they were all decent. The cinnamon roll donut was definitely the best, after the ube donut, as the dough was fluffy and the cinnamon flavoring was a nice touch. The old fashioned donut was also surprisingly good, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside. The apple fritter was fairly good as well with a crunchy outside and apple-filled dough that was soft and flavorful. The bear claw with apple filling had a strange, unpleasant taste as if it had gone bad somehow. Overall, the ube donuts are definitely worth the trip from the city and depending on your flavor preferences you might also enjoy some of their other offerings. read more

Literally my favorite donuts ever. I have never liked glazed donuts, but my husband and I will literally fight over the last one. And their raspberry filled and Boston cream...don't even get me started. You have been warned....they're deliciously addictive. read more

Gurnee Donuts has been family owned and operated for over 21 years. We have over 30 different varieties of donuts made from scratch daily. You can smell the aroma of our creations everyday if your driving by. We open daily at 6am and attempt to stay open until 2pm. We'll only close our doors early if we run out of donuts. They have a pretty vast menu. You can see the love that goes into this family owned business. I decided to try the mango sticky rice matcha and the ube hojicha latte. The Ube beverage was great, the ube flavor stands out pretty strong unlike most ube coffee drinks I've had elsewhere. The mango sticky rice was delish, it was sweet but not overly sweet and the cream made a huge difference in the drink. Highly recommend. Overall we had a great fine and would recommend if you're looking for a fusion coffee shop to try!

We were the only ones there at the time so we were able to place an order right away. The display of different types of mini donuts needs a little bit of work I thought. They just put up old donuts against the glass and it didn't look very appetizing. They make fresh donuts right in front of you (which is amazing). I wish the dipping and sprinkling process was a bit more efficient and presentable. They dipped the donuts in buckets of frostings with their hands (gloves on). Perhaps using a tong and keeping the frosting in a more presentable container would help. It also takes a bit of time to make since it is freshly made. The donuts are very good, especially when they're fresh. They do get a bit chewy and the frostings start to taste a bit stale after a day so need to make sure to eat them all the same day. I ordered the chocolate, French toast, strawberry, cinnamon sugar, m&m, pebbles and the cookies and creme flavors. The chocolate dip doesn't really taste like chocolate but more like runny chocolate syrup. The white sugar frosting is good. I would definitely go back for some more fresh cinnamon sugar donuts.

With a quick Yelp search, I stumbled upon a place that claimed to have the holy grail of doughnuts: red velvet doughnuts. Excitement filled the air as I discovered that this seemingly magical doughnut haven was just a stone's throw away. As the super dad that I am, I decided to surprise my family with these tantalizing treats. Now, let me paint the picture of disappointment for you. Brace yourselves. Picture this: I walk into the doughnut spot, my heart racing with anticipation. But lo and behold, they didn't have the legendary red velvet doughnuts! My hopes were crushed like a doughnut under an elephant's foot. But, undeterred, I decided to go with their bow tie doughnuts instead. Big mistake. The donuts here at Gurnee Donuts are simply amazing! Let me tell you about their maple bacon that I had, it was hands down the best I've ever tasted. But that's not all.
