Best donuts in the northern Chicago land area. Made a quick stop before going to fright fest at six flags. We got half a dozen and they were so good and flaky. The glazed were my favorite along with the blueberry glazed. Wayy better than Dunkin' Donuts. I will try to always come back before riding the coasters. read more

This is our second attempt to get ube doughnuts from here, but still no luck. Apparently they only make these purple delights on Saturdays and Sundays. (Not Friday like a previous reviewer wrote.) The Boston Cream was very good, with delicious custard inside. The cinnamon roll was fluffy and lightly sweetened. The unglazed was soft and not very sweet (as expected). The woman who served us was super friendly, often running to the back to get us fresh doughnuts. Hopefully our next visit will finally yield ube. :) read more

Its Gurnee Donuts come on. Where waiting in line is an experience of mouth watering joy. The smell of the coffee and the jockeying in place to get that bacon donut before the person in front takes the last one (lol). Filipino pride! When I first read about the raving reviews of the award winning "Ube" donut, I knew in my gut that there's Filipino love going into those donuts. Ube (purple yam) is a famous starchy vegetable like potatoes, taro and other root vegetables, that we enjoy making desserts from in the Philippines. My mom made the best Ube Halaya(purple jelly) when I was growing up.. Sorry, I got carried away. Anyway, back to Gurnee Donuts.. I went to Gurnee Donuts at around 8:30am today, Easter Sunday(they open at 6 am until around noon to 2pm, or when they've sold out their donuts). Once I entered the donut shop, I did not have enough strength to take pictures inside because the oh so good smell of freshly made donuts was overwhelming! There was a line of customers ordering boxes of donuts but there were a couple of staff who were on top of things. I got the Red Velvet, Ube cake glazed, Ube topped with coconut, and a few chocolate glazed pieces. Everything was fantastic. Not too sweet and yet the flavors stood out. Each piece was packed with the sinfully goodness of a donut. My favorite is the Ube topped with coconut. The coconut had little crunch on them and went so well with every bite of the Ube cake. The Glazed Ube was very good as well since the little crunch from the glaze, covering the donut added the yumminess level on the ube cake piece(same goes for the Red Velvet). Fast, friendly and efficient service. I had to ask if the lady who helped me is Filipino...she is! The owner is married to a Filipina who created the recipe for the award winning Ube Donut. Woohooo! I will come back for sure to try the other drooling worthy products that they have. The glazed blueberry is on top of my list next time. Fyi, the Ube products are only sold on the weekends(Sat & Sun) and available only until they run out so get there early if you want to try them. read more

I am not a big donut person at all, or a sugar fiend in general. But I do love taking car trips over the weekend. Zoom zoom, little Prius! Today's adventures led J and I to Milwaukee, with a little breakfast pit-stop in Gurnee. Yup, the home of Six Flags and every chain restaurant you can imagine. BUT, great things can happen in Gurnee and this place is one of them. Small, local, family-run, and located in a strip mall (...these are a few of my favorite things!) I fell head-over-heels in love with their red velvet donut. It has white icing on it and sprinkles. YES. RED VELVET DONUT WITH SPRINKLES. Not only the prettiest looking donut I've seen in a while, but it was SO delicious. Perfectly moist (super impressive compared to other cake donuts I've had), perfectly sweet, and with that textural crunch from the rainbow sprinkles... this is essentially happiness in donut form. Their raspberry jelly donut and frosted blueberry cake donut were really good. 4 donuts only set us back around $5, AND you get 4 free donut holes with your Yelp check-in. Eat these! The worker was so generous when I stopped in. She gave me a free boston cream donut for cryin out loud! Now personally I'm not a huge fan of filled donuts, but I really can't complain as it was free...This place also advertises that they'll give you free donut holes after checking in on yelp, so that's awesome. I announced I was checking in and she stuffed tons of donut holes in my bag - all of which were of the yeast-raised variety with a light sugary glaze. Truthfully, I wasn't a fan of these guys either, but I'm more of a cake donut gal so that probably explains it. Their buttermilk donut is reeeeal good - dense interior with a sugarily-crunchified outer portion. Easily my favorite. The red velvet was pretty good and looks beautiful, a deep red in color (see pics!) I must say that it wasn't especially flavorful though - all you taste is the slight sugary-glaze which coats the outside of the donut. I should have skipped on ordering the cinnamon sugar; it was decidedly dry and nothing special. And I'm proud to declare that I successfully resisted my urge to order an apple fritter!! They were peering out at me from the glass display case, and just by glancing at them I could tell that they were the kind I liked. Dangerous. One day... I'll ignore the internal warning and polish off one of these sugary masterpieces. read more

I was in Chicago visiting some family and was in the Gurnee area and my kids were craving donuts and we stopped by Gurnee Donuts. It is such a cute little family owned store in a shopping center. The owners are very friendly. I've heard people talking about the bacon maple long johns but the sound of that wasn't appealing at all. Having said that, I will tried anyone once before giving my final judgment. Wow is all I can say. It was delicious. Its the combination of sweet and savoy. They also have a variety of donuts and coffee. Being there makes you want to try everything they have. I definitely recommend this place if you're in the area. read more

We've lived in Gurnee for two years (and on the border of Gurnee for two years before that). I'm embarrassed to admit that we had our first Gurnee Donut experience just a few days ago. With the in-laws visiting, we wanted a quick grab-and-go breakfast option, especially one that would please the littlest of our visitors. They are three years old, six year old, and both want sprinkles on everything. Challenge accepted. My husband made the donut run with a vague list of suggestions from my sister-in-law and me. He did not disappoint. The nephews split a vanilla long john and another donut that had Fruity Pebbles cereal sprinkled on it. I didn't get to try either of those. Based on the kids' sugar high and sheer delight, I'd say they were winners. I requested a glazed old fashioned, which is the donut I use to evaluate all donut shops. It was heavenly. The donut itself had a good crumb and a nice flavor. The glaze was sweet without being overbearing. My only wish -- and this may have been a timing issue -- was that the glaze was dried a bit harder for a touch of crispness. I plan to make up for four years of neglect of this place with frequent visits in the future. read more

Even though these are not my personal favorite donuts, they very ably earn four stars for quality donuts and a very friendly and attentative owner. The apple fritter tastes like what an apple fritter should - old leaven dough mixed with apple bits. Its sweet and heavy. The cake dough is very cake cakey. The raised is delicious. The crueller was glazed just enough that it wasn't mushy. The old-fashioned was a good thick crust and a subtle sweet taste. The buttermilk had a REALLY good thick crust. The chocolate cake left me really wanting to taste more cocoa, but the texture makes up for the difference. The creme-filled tastes just like a Dunkin'. Still not bad. Red velvet- actually pretty good. Decent coffee. The owner counts the donuts as you pick them to save confusion. Bless her, b/c when picking my victims behind the glass, I lose count really fast. She also spoiled us and gave us sprinkle frosted velvet. Again, not a favorite according to my own flavor palate, but very good donuts, nonetheless. Skip the dunkin. read more

We love Gurnee donuts! During the summer, our house is filled to the brim with visitors - and we make sure to grab a dozen donuts here for breakfast. Our favorite is the Maple Bacon long john- so good. The old fashioned donut is also a favorite of mine. The kids always love the double chocolate or the sprinkle variety - and several folks adore the blueberry. Red velvet cake donut is tasty too. If donut shops were a woman, and if I were single, I would marry Gurnee Donuts. This place is the essence of what a donut shop ought to be. Family owned. Fresh donuts. Delicious aromas. Elderly gentlemen who meet there everyday and help the owner by folding donut boxes. It's just perfect. So outside the ambiance, these truly are perfect donuts. My fave is the chocolate chocolate, and I am partial to the cake donut. But you are guaranteed a trip to donut nirvana when you enter this place. We now live in Wisconsin, but every time we're driving to Chicago we get off 94 and pick up at least a dozen donuts. Do yourself a favor and donut miss this place! read more

I was looking for a place nearby Six Flags that was a locally owned, non chain eatery. This seemed to be the best choice given that it was walkable. I walked in around 2 PM on a Saturday (one hour before closing). I know that this is a bad time to have donuts, but I was planning on having one meal hold me through my time at Six Flags. It worked reasonably well. This place had a reasonable selection of donuts. It was locally owned by an Asian woman and her son (I believe) ran the counter. Donuts went for $0.85 a piece and were pretty good. I got a jelly filled donut, a butterscotch long john, and a glazed red velvet donut. The jelly filled donut was fine. The butterscotch was a little old, but still great. I was somewhat disappointed with the red velvet, but it was still passable. I sat down to enjoy these while taking a break from the chaos that is Six Flags. While I was sitting, another customer came in who asked about their famous cake donuts, which were not available. He asked if they had previously been closed down, but was told that they had been operating for 18 years. He seemed perturbed that the donuts weren't fresh, so they threw in a fresh, hot butterscotch long john. This place is a nice, family owned joint. The prices are reasonable and the donuts are fine. I've definitely had better, but they were very pleasant. By signing into Yelp, I got free donut holes too. I would recommend trying this place, as I like to get local flavors. read more

Best donuts ive had in my life. Across all chicago suburbs and 7 states ive lived in. Best part is they are consistently good everytime i go. Only downside is the dont have a full selection.
