Maybe I went on an off day? I stopped into Gurnee Donuts because I saw all of the good reviews here on Yelp. The gentleman behind the counter was very friendly and helpful, but the donuts themselves just were not good. The Boston cream had maybe one tablespoon of cream inside. The chocolate glazed didn't have any flavor. The blueberry was just ok. I hate saying this because I love going to mom and pop shops, but honestly Dunkin Donuts is much better.

Gurnee Donuts is always great on ube weekends or regular weekdays. Donuts are always fresh, service always friendly, prices reasonable, and the place is always clean. Ube Weekends -- get there early!

I used to love this place! I would wake up early to get there and get some ube donuts before they ran out! But its been a couple years and I am in town so I decided to come in and get a does around 10 in the morning. This inside had a few chairs which people could sit inside. The server was very quick when taking my order. I walked in ans it looked the same as it was before. I ordered a dozen donuts and I was so shocked at how small they are now.. i got chocolate glaze, ube sprinkles, vanilla sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles and some Boston cream donuts. The donuts were smaller than I remember but using the same recipe so the flavor was more concentrated and they were way too sweet.. honestly they werent made with love.. another example of what happens when business prioritize profits over quality. So disappointing..

Gurnee Donuts is a gem! A small, family-owned business with super friendly and helpful service. We went in planning to grab just two donuts and left with a dozen--and a coffee! There's a steady flow of regulars, which says a lot. Great variety, fun flavors, and everything was fresh and delicious. You can tell they put care and love into what they do. We'll definitely be back!

I decided to try this place based on Yelp reviews. The shop is located in a strip center alongside several other ethnic restaurants and stores. I got a chocolate cake donut and an apple fritter. There are a couple of tables for those who want to sit and have coffee. The staff member who helped us wasn't particularly friendly, but he wasn't rude either. The donuts aren't labeled, so we had to ask about the options. Overall, the donuts were average--not the best, but not the worst.

It is located in a unit of a multi-use commercial building. Upon approaching, the location is clean and clear of any trash or hazards. Very small area in the front to sit and eat. The hours are clearly noted on the door. When entering the building, there was a sweet aroma that was inviting. The facility was clean with a display of donuts just in front of me and a cooler with drinks to the right. I was looking at the purple donut, which the kind gentleman advised was the "purple sweet potato" donut. The display is nice with purple frosting and purple sprinkles. He also advised that this is one of the biggest sellers. I hear this business is locally owned and operated. All of the donuts looked delicious in a nicely displayed. They offer long John's, crullers, sprinkled, glazed, honey buns, and many more. I purchased two of the purple sweet potato and an apple fritter. I was not too impressed with the purple sweet potato, but the apple fritter was delicious. The price, I'm not too sure about that. Roughly $10 for 3 items seems a bit steep.

I had to hit up Gurnee donuts because I was in the area on a Sunday morning. Most of the donuts sold were traditional. The raised dough was a little off on texture/taste and not so sweet. The cake and buttermilk were alright. I really liked their ube donut the most. It was soft, fluffy, and moist.

Gurnee Donuts is good but not something I would drive out of my way for often. If your coming from Chicagoland area like most of us, it could be an hour drive or more. My wife likes coming here cuz she's Filipino so she wants to contribute to her people in the small business community. I would say it's worth the drive if you're also heading to Six Flags, Gurnee Mills mall or the outlet mall in Pleasant Prairie, WI. We definitely make a day out of it for our shopping trips. The donuts are fresh & made daily, their ube selections are what we mostly desire but there's also other variety like a red velvet cake donut & cherry old fashioned which was surprisingly good as I don't eat much cherry of anything. They also had an ube cinnamon roll for once which I had to try, needless to say it wasn't to my liking..too sweet for me with the glaze then added cream cheese frosting & sugar sprinkles as well. Overall, I would recommend this establishment if you're a big sweet tooth fan & if you're Filipino, at least make the trip out here once just to satisfy your curiosity. All in all, I would say it is a definite must try if you're in the area or passing through Gurnee on the highway but not a solo reason to make the trip up here for.

I have personally never been to this place, but have had donuts brought to me on 2 separate occasions. The first time I had them, I had their ube donuts that were a day old. Even after a day they were still soft and delish. Love their apple fritter! read more

Having lived in Chicago, I'm well versed in the modern donut scene with Do-Rite Donuts earning all of the puffy hearts from me. Since moving to the burbs, there's a lack of those awesome donut shops. Gurnee donuts reflects the Chicago suburban donut scene: no nonsense donut shop in a strip mall. What it lacks in ambiance, it makes up for with a solid donut selection and tasty treats. I came here in the afternoon after dropping off some baby stuff for donations. The day's donuts were nearly done. I managed to snag a few for my family to taste. These donuts are pretty delicious and measure up to the modern Chicago donut tradition I got used as a city dweller. If I'm ever around that part of Gurnee again, I'll stop by for some more donuts. read more

Sooo good and fantastic service. During these strange times it's nice to have nice people. I called to place an order and asked if they could bring them outside to my car (I had my kids with me and didn't want to bring everyone in) and they said they would and it was no problem! After 2 years of being here at Great Lakes this place has kept me afloat. Great donuts great atmosphere. I loved walking in on Sunday's to see the retired gentlemen enjoy their coffee and donuts with their friends. Loved seeing the friendly faces that helped me pick out my donuts and made my coffee with condensed milk. Whether I got a blueberry, red velvet, Ube, or just a plain glazed it always made me very happy. Thank you for giving me a little piece of home while I was away from home. read more

Do yourself a favor and get the best donuts you've ever tasted. Yes, they're in gurnee but so worth the drive! They also have their famous ube donuts on the weekends. This donut shop has won awards and you will taste why. You will not be disappointed. read more

Literally the best. Better than an Chicago or surrounding area donut sho! I've had all the usual suspects, Stans, Do Rite, Firecakes, etc and Gurnee far surpasses them. I love the blueberry donut and the fact they can create gigantic donuts and be custom with them! Keep it up! read more

I can see why this tiny shop has been selling donuts here for so long. THE DONUTS ARE AMAZING. So light they melt in your mouth. Take a lesson Krispy Creme. The double chocolate has a great crunch on the outside and amazing dense chocolate flavor on the inside. My favorite is anything glazed. Gurnee Donuts has a great variety of glazed donuts. Get in there early seems as if everyone else likes my favorite also, you guessed it: Chocalate Glazed. Gurnee Donuts even has a unique donut that they have won many awards for it's called :MAPLE GLAZED LONG JOHN WITH BACON!!!! that's right bacon, who wouldn't like bacon on anything??? We live in Michigan, while visiting our Daughter and Son-in law waiting for our Grandson to be born we stumbled into this place, thanks to Yelp! We just happen to mention to the Owner we were heading home after a month of being here ( 3 trips for donuts) we were glad we're heading home, can't afford the extra poundage. We had just purchased 2 doz. donuts to stock freezer, help with withdrawal symptoms. He added another half dozen for the trip home. Can't wait to get back. Our family brings donuts whenever they visit. read more

KNOWN FOR - Ube Donut (6/10) I ALSO TRIED - Original Glazed (4/10) - Old Fashioned (4/10) - Red Velvet (3/10) - Boston Creme (4/10) Man...it's been a LONG time since my last review! Life is busy! Anyways, a bunch of us were out in Gurnee and had some free time, so we were looking for something to do (read: eat). Someone mentioned there's a good donut shop nearby, so we decided to head there. I've tried out some donut shops lately, and while I do like (and in some cases, love) donuts, there's not a whole lot of impressive places I've seen, outside of Voodoo Donuts in Portland. I'm not one to scope out donut places, but I am definitely the last one to complain about going to one...at least to most. The conversation about going to this place was like, "Hey there's a donut shop near by. Wanna go?" "Sure!" And...Scene. Clearly, there wasn't much happening in Gurnee. Now, I'm glad this wasn't brought up, or else my expectations would have been raised even higher, but this place has been featured on the Hungry Hound. Crazier still, it's been around for over 20 years! UBE DONUT Ube (pronounced OO-bay) is basically a purple yam that's commonly found in Filipino and other Asian desserts. This would be like the Filipino version of Korean's "Gogooma." If you're familiar with the purple Filipino dessert Halo Halo, bingo! They had 2 kinds of Ube donuts when we were there, one topped with coconut and one with Fruity Pebbles. It's basically just a purple frosted donut. It's been a long time since I had ube, and I never had it by itself, so I can't even really tell you what it tasted like. It was like a less sweet vanilla frosting, but minus the vanilla. I'd expect it to taste something like sweet taro, but it was too light of a flavor - just sweet. The coconut is the standard one, and it was..ok. Nothing to go crazy about, even though I hear that there's a place in Miami that sells this for $1,000 a dozen (though it's covered in gold flakes too). Because of the weak flavor of the ube, it just tasted like a sugar frosted donut with coconut. The Fruity Pebbles one was better (the reason it's a 6 and not a 5), mainly because the extra sugar from the cereal made it pop a bit more, but if ube was too light for coconut, then it didn't even stand a chance against the Fruity Pebbles. The cereal took it away, using the sweetness of the frosting and donut as microphone for its fake fruity flavors. All in all, not impressive. ORIGINAL GLAZED I think the only place I like a regular glazed donut is Krispy Kreme. I don't not-like glazed donuts, but I don't like them from here, that's for sure. The glaze is so thin and weak, so you just get a sticky donut. The sodium in the donut actually matches or outweighs the sweetness, which really sucks. Instead of complimenting, it clashes. Unfortunately, this is the basis of most of their donuts. OLD FASHIONED Unremarkable. Yes, it's an old fashioned. Yes, it tastes like an old fashioned, but just dull. RED VELVET Look, no one eats the just the bread of a red velvet cupcake and says, "Oh man, that red food coloring tastes AWESOME!" Nope, zero! The only reason anyone eats it is for the creme. So how the heck can you make a red velvet donut without ANY of the creme?! The donut is basically a blood red old fashioned donut that has a bit of a dull taste. That "sodium is saltier than the sweetness" problem is even evident here. If the old fashioned is "unremarkable," this one is inedible! BOSTON CREME I'm not even sure why I got this, but I'm not a huge fan of it. The chocolate frosting was generic, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the creme also had a tiny bit more sourness to it than I'm normally used to...which kind of made it unenjoyable. GUR-NOPE! I don't understand this place. Their donuts suck. Continuing the note from up top, do you know the most amazing bit of news about this place? They freaking won DonutFest once! There is NOTHING remarkable about these donuts, and in some cases, they are actually just plain bad. I'd rather go to Dunkin! read more

Was pretty impressed! Bought a dozen so took a bite of several flavors- my favorite was the ube with oreo's and red velvet. The glaze twist was good too. Considering it's in the middle of nowhere, it was very comparable to donut joints in NYC for half the price. Would love to come back if I could. read more

This is a small family owned business that can easily be missed if you're not looking out for it. Overall, there donuts are good. The selection is very standard. Nothing out of the norm compared to some other elaborate donut shops. The staff was nice and ambiance was chill. Its definitely a grab and go place. There were a few tables for customers who choose to dine in but in my 5-10 minutes there no one did. read more

These are hands down the best donuts in Lake County! The family that runs this business is always welcoming and they have been known to occasionally throw in an extra donut for free! I can easily say no to a donut from that chain across town, but I can NEVER resist a donut (or two...or three) from Gurnee Donuts! read more

This is THE PLACE to get donuts. The family owned shop is full of resilient people who don't let things keep them down. I was so happy to see it come back after a fire destroyed the business. Their donuts are amazing, you can email them to pre order on busy days. The Ube donuts are AMAZING, which is their "signature" donut. But let's be honest... ALL their donuts are amazing. Prices are fair and again, the family who owns Gurnee Donuts really makes the business. I love supporting our local community by coming here. read more

The Ube beverage was great, the ube flavor stands out pretty strong unlike most ube coffee drinks I've had elsewhere. The mango sticky rice was delish, it was sweet but not overly sweet and the cream made a huge difference in the drink. Highly recommend. Overall we had a great fine and would recommend if you're looking for a fusion coffee shop to try!

We were the only ones there at the time so we were able to place an order right away. The display of different types of mini donuts needs a little bit of work I thought. They just put up old donuts against the glass and it didn't look very appetizing. They make fresh donuts right in front of you (which is amazing). I wish the dipping and sprinkling process was a bit more efficient and presentable. They dipped the donuts in buckets of frostings with their hands (gloves on). Perhaps using a tong and keeping the frosting in a more presentable container would help. It also takes a bit of time to make since it is freshly made. The donuts are very good, especially when they're fresh. They do get a bit chewy and the frostings start to taste a bit stale after a day so need to make sure to eat them all the same day. I ordered the chocolate, French toast, strawberry, cinnamon sugar, m&m, pebbles and the cookies and creme flavors. The chocolate dip doesn't really taste like chocolate but more like runny chocolate syrup. The white sugar frosting is good. I would definitely go back for some more fresh cinnamon sugar donuts.

With a quick Yelp search, I stumbled upon a place that claimed to have the holy grail of doughnuts: red velvet doughnuts. Excitement filled the air as I discovered that this seemingly magical doughnut haven was just a stone's throw away. As the super dad that I am, I decided to surprise my family with these tantalizing treats. Now, let me paint the picture of disappointment for you. Brace yourselves. Picture this: I walk into the doughnut spot, my heart racing with anticipation. But lo and behold, they didn't have the legendary red velvet doughnuts! My hopes were crushed like a doughnut under an elephant's foot. But, undeterred, I decided to go with their bow tie doughnuts instead. Big mistake. The donuts here at Gurnee Donuts are simply amazing! Let me tell you about their maple bacon that I had, it was hands down the best I've ever tasted. But that's not all.
