I was in the South Belt/Ellington area for work for the first time, and good thing I tried Gumbo Mama. I really liked it. I went with two coworkers and we all agreed the food was yummy. Real comfort food, very tasty. The staff were very nice and very courteous. Super accommodating. I called the place first to confirm they were still open, and even tho they were close to closing, they still waited for us. They even asked for our order ahead of time so it will be fresh and ready when we arrive. That was really appreciated. The restaurant is on the first floor inside a corporate building. Depending on the time, parking can get busy, but when we got there, there were still plenty of open spots so it was easy for us. Food came out hot and flavorful, and you can tell they put care into it. Overall, great experience. I would come back again next time I'm in the area. read more

This place is a hidden gem in the Ellington Field area. It's tucked inside an office building, but once you turn the corner, you're pleasantly surprised--proof that an office-building restaurant can absolutely deliver great food. Tina is the real deal. Her down-home, honest, patriotic personality makes every diner feel right at home. I grabbed my food to go, but the atmosphere is welcoming and definitely worth dining in. I had the Gumbo Burger, and it instantly reminded me of the burgers my mother used to make when I was a kid--well seasoned, smoky, and served on sliced bread. Tucked inside a gas station in a questionable area near the med center is a Cajun influenced southern soul food menu with flavors that will knock your socks off. I was initially hesitant to enter due to the location and vagrants congregating in the parking lot but was greeted at the door by the gas station attendant who held the door open for me and closed it behind as I entered (possibly locked it too). The sweetest lady (I think Gumbo mama herself) greeted me and immediately told me about the specials they were offering and told me that all new customers got a free slice of cake. She was so pleasant and excited to have me there, it was genuinely touching and you can feel how much care she puts into her food and business. I decided to just try the seafood gumbo and the cake slice. The cake didn't even make it home. So moist and the sugary crust was perfection. The gumbo was absolutely delicious. Thick and flavorful and full of bite sized sausage and small shrimp. I ate it when I got home after a 30+ min drive and it was still nice and hot. The medium wasn't very big, maybe 6-8 oz, but still very filling. I would say prices are more than I was expecting to find for a gas station but the food and service are high quality. There are a few stools at the counter if you can't wait and want to eat it there. Definitely recommend and will return! read more

The food and the owner are both absolutely wonderful, I highly recommend -- 10/10! We came in for an early lunch. Unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures of the food because I was pretty hungry on arrival (whoops). I had the seafood gumbo, and my grandma had the lunch special -- fried shrimp and French fries. The gumbo was cooked to perfection. Not too salty, fresh, and lots of yummy okra. I loved that there were no tails on the shrimp, it makes it much easier and more pleasant to eat for me. The shrimp and fries were equally divine. The owner told me she uses cornmeal instead of the store bought batter, and I could definitely tell the difference in quality from other fried shrimp I've had elsewhere. The batter was delicately light, not over-breaded or over-seasoned, so you can enjoy the taste of the actual shrimp. There was a healthy amount of fries as well. She even had spicy ketchup on the side, if you're into that as I am. She also makes the tartar sauce herself, and you can taste all of the love and care poured into it. I finally made it & the reviews are true! Ms. Tina is the sweetest! And the food is OMG too good! Haven't had good food at a gas station since I left Louisiana #iykyk I initially went in for fried fish but the Gumbo Mama Burger was calling my name! The patty was well seasoned and THICCCC! Called in a order for lunch and was meet with a friendly loving voice. Gumbo mama herself took my order and she was so helpful and customer service was excellent. Now, I order the medium Gumbo and a piece of fried fish. The fried fish didn't even make it back to work. Crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. Baby that GUMBO was soooooo good. Filled with chicken and shrimp and sausage. Also came with a crab leg too! Really did taste like my grandmothers gumbo. Just because it's on the inside of a gas station don't look past it. I googled the best gumbo in Houston and Gumbo Mama was a favorite. I decided to give them a try, so happy I did. Mrs.Tina the owner greeted me with a warm welcoming smile before she took my order. She was very kind and wholesome, definitely makes you feel like you're with family. I ordered the seafood gumbo, fried shrimp and catfish basket. Wait time wasn't long and she even gifted me a slice of vanilla pound cake as a first time customer. The food was incredible. The gumbo was the best I've had. It was seasoned perfectly and had generous portions of seafood inside. The shrimps were large and crispy, fries and catfish were seasoned and flavorful. Even the toast included was buttered and tasty. The food was definitely made with love. I would've posted pics but we ate all the food . I will definitely be back to try her seafood pasta and some more gumbo. This is a great small business to support. read more
