Went Friday to have lunch with my sister. Our server was Naomi. She's excellent. I give her a 10. We ordered the raw oysters, a dozen and the shrimp bacon wrapped jalapeños. The ambience was good and we took our plates to go for dinner. She had catfish and shrimp and I had oysters and shrimp. It was also so good. I think the french fries should be double fried though. I called in on 2-8-2025 at 7:47pm and the knucklehead didn't want to put my order in to go because I had to pay first over the phone I've been going there for over 30yrs and they give me this bs when I arrived they hadn't placed my order because i hadn't paid over the phone but the guy didn't tell me he wasn't going to put my order in so when I arrived they acted stupid like they didn't know what they did. Food quality has gone downhill over the past few years and the quality of the patrons have also gone downhill. Years ago, I would find it a pleasant place to eat at at the patio area and enjoy the nice beauty and quietness of the scenery. However due to changes in the surrounding areas, I cannot find any enjoyment in eating at the place we will just say, that the trash from the surrounding areas use that place as a meeting area to get drunk and out of control. Coupled with the foot traffic and the close proximity and the several incidents that some of my friends have experience there in the past, I find it prudent to order to go and eat in the safety and serenity of my home. I always order the seafood gumbo, which that night it appeared that they had skimped on the ingredients or the person that scooped the gumbo into the container did not attempt to make sure there were any shrimp, heck even the vegetables made it to the container. It was almost all broth and very little rice. Also the flavors were not there. In the past, the gumbo was so good, it did not need any additional condiments. However that night, it needed a lot of Tabasco sauce to make it edible. The Mate's Plate was absolutely horrible. The cornmeal breading was so thick (and bland) that I could not taste the shrimp (heck at that point, how did I know I was served gulf shrimp since I could not taste it). The breading in the fried oysters was also so thick that I could not taste the oysters, but rather the breading. French fries were terrible and I did not even eat more than 3. To make the fried food more palatable, I make my own homemade cocktail sauce with A LOT OF HORSERADISH, in order to give flavor to the food and hopefully breakthrough the overpowering crunch of the cornmeal breading. The Stuffed Redfish was so salty that it was not even edible. And the stuffing was also even salty. Was it worth the price I paid? Hell fucking no! Waste of money! read more

I love this restaurant for an authentic southern experience and even better food. We have come here twice on business and left completely satisfied both times. We have ordered almost everything on the appetizer menu and we're surprised with the quality, flavor, and unique seasoning. I heard they have the best gumbo in town and I would have to agree, it was delicious! The boudin balls, spicy shrimp, and key lime pie were amazing. This place was my rainout hang out starting back in the mid 80's when I lived in the vicinity. I knew all the waiters like Alfred, Solo, Isaiah, and the manager John at the time. All really great guys and fun to be around!!! They really made it a great dining experience always cutting up with the customers! The food was always great!!! Their cook at the time was a fellow named Van. Van could cook the best Gumbo, and everything else for that matter!!! His Gumbo reminded me of my dad's who was from Louisiana and was a great cook himself. The place hasn't changed much, a different bunch of people, not quite as lively as the original crew I was used to. The food is still good and Pretty much the came menu. I always went for the oysters on the half shell. And Alfred was the one who waited on me the most, he was a really great guy and we got to be good friends. I'm a little disappointed I one thing and it seems like most of these seafood places have really cut back on some things oysters being one. I've grown up in this area all my life and I've been around seafood all my life. Anytime you went somewhere to get oysters on the half shell they were always, and I mean always served by the bakers dozen. That means you were always served 13 oysters on the half shell, sometimes more. I guess since the oysters have gone up in price most places are only giving you 12, and on one occasion at this very spot I got less than that!!! I didn't say anything, but never forgot it! I ordered a dozen this last visit and that's exactly what I got, a dozen. I didn't complain add the food though is still just as good as it was when I first started coming here. I had ice tea with my lunch this time. Back in the day it was always a cold beer to go with my oysters. Alfred would see my car coming down beside the old golf course and set a beer in the bar. When I walked in all I had to do was look for the empty chair with the beer on the bar!!! I gave it two stars because the restaurant is pretty cool. Its a boat on actual water. The food though, was horrible. We ordered the seafood gumbo, the combo basket, the jumbo combo basket, and the shrimp poboy sandwich. When the server placed the gumbo in front of us, there was obviously a very long black hair in the it as the hair was inside the soup, mixed with the rice, and draped over the side of the bowl. We told her there's a hair in my soup, she pulled it out and said "well do you still want it?" I started laughing thinking it was a joke, until she stood there waiting for our answer. The fish in the baskets was mostly thick breading over very think pieces of fish. The shrimp in the sandwich was the same. Popcorn shrimp with very thick layers of breading. The bread was also very hard. I only ate the shrimp and only because I was so hungry. This place was also kind of expensive and the food was not horrible. We would never go there again. read more

Came here to get my fried shrimp fix. Unfortunately they serve their fried shrimp the two ways I don't like: butterflied and cornmeal breading. The coleslaw was OK. The fries were good. The place is pretty neat. You sit inside a large boat. The bar is at the front of the boat and you are actually sitting on a incline, which I thought was cool. First time trying Capt Benny's even though I've driven past it for years. As a newbie, I didn't realize there were separate entrances for the bar and dining room. I didn't want to look stupid so I went ahead and sat at the bar area. Started with a Bombshell and cup of seafood gumbo. The roux was lighter than I prefer but the flavor was good. The okra must be frozen because there were so many pieces of stem in it. Overall, the gumbo was just ok. Not the worst but not the best either. I had the Mate's plate with fried shrimp and fried scallops. Hallelujah! THIS is how shrimp is supposed to be fried: butterflied and cornmeal crusted. The scallops were perfectly cooked and sweet, no fishy taste. But those shrimp were the bomb. Exactly like momma used to make. I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. I'm going back just to eat the fried shrimp until I pop. Hubby got the stuffed shrimp and they were also amazing! He loved them. Good experience. There's even great outdoor area to eat in. Basic fried seafood. The boudain balls were pretty good and delicious. The fried crab fingers were fried extremely hard, could barely chew them. The crawfish etouffee tasted like a zatarain's mix you can buy from the grocery store and just add crawfish to it. I paid $17 for the fried crawfish plate and it was only like 15 little bitty crawfish, definitely not worth the money. The toast that came with the plates didn't have any butter and was barely toasted; tasted like plain white bread. This place is way overpriced for what you get. I can't believe I haven't left a review for Captain Benny's yet. I'm a total regular and I'm here like once a week it seems. Not only is the food incredible and the crawfish priced lower than anywhere else nearby but the staff is absolutely amazing. From Angela, Heather, to Jelly and the other staff, I've never encountered a problem. They're all super friendly and helpful when you can't decide on what you want. My favorite things to order are the hot and spicy boiled shrimp, the fried alligator, the chicken and sausage gumbo and the crawfish! The crawfish is always spicy and fresh and much cheaper than Guidry's on Center. They also have delicious hushpuppies which I always get a side order of. The outdoor seating is awesome for spring and summer and the bar is a nice place to grab a beer and a bite alone. Best seafood in the Deer Park area, hands down. read more

I've probably driven by this location over 100 times in the 30+ years I've noticed the boat-shaped restaurant sitting alongside the freeway, but I never had visited it before. I've been to nearly every other location of the Captain Tom's/Captain Benny's mini-chain of restaurants. I came on a Sunday morning to see if this location was any different. Upon pulling up, I noticed that there was the large outdoor patio to sit at, plus a side room they added on to the boat. For comparison, I don't remember any of the Captain Tom's to feature this additional seating. There were only about 7 customers around 1130, which was just shortly after they opened, so there was no problem finding seating at the bar. I ordered some of my typical items on this visit, which included: a cup of gumbo, half dozen oysters, and the catfish plate. The oysters seemed a bit fresher than the Capt. Tom's on 1960, and the gumbo and catfish tasted about the same. One thing I noticed was this location had redfish on the menu. I don't remember seeing that at Captain Tom's. Overall, an easy quick meal with excellent, prompt service, but I guess you get that when you come in at off times. I will be back again read more
