Here is a gem in a far off place from the basis of its inspiration. I'm on a strict diet and could not try many things and I don't like wasting money so I got a small dish that I could tolerate eating. The BBQ shrimp it was. Now anyone who knows about this dish understands it's not the same type of BBQ like we do ribs and chicken. This is a butter sauce that's seasoned to creole standards and served with French bread. Typically it's served in shell however these were peeled and served in the sauce. I'm not mad at this as I didn't have to get messy to peel the shrimp and dip the sauce etc. it was nice to eat it with a fork and already doused in the sauce. The bread was easy to dip and it wasn't salty. I'd love for my New Orleans born friends to make the trip in order to check this place out. I went early in the day shortly after opening so it wasn't salty not crowded at all and the host whisked me to a table with a good view for people watching. They were able to handle greeting, serving, and bartending between the 2 of them and not lose any grace or standards of service. I explained my dietary restrictions and the young lady was happy to navigate me through the menu. They have a full bar that I'm interested in delving into but I had to work later that day so water and soda were sufficient. read more

I will say they are 5/5 for friendliness. But for Cajun food they are lacking. What they did good was their French fries and nuggets which their fries are battered. For a kids meal this is a really big portion. For Cajun food it lacked flavor and was kind of just weird. The red beans were bland, Lacked real seasoning, salt and had chunks of carrots. The gumbo was alright but not good or exceptional by any means. I did like that the okra was fresh enough to not be slimy. But it had no spicy appeal, and lacked the holy trinity. It also wasn't oily which was nice. The jambalaya was outright bad. It tasted sour and just really off. It was also like a soup instead of a rice dish. To top it off there were chunks of shredded cheese in it. Crab cakes were alright but the dressing for it was incredibly mustard seed heavy. My husband was a fan of the sauce, but I really wasn't. The buttered bread was good. I can't foresee myself coming back just because it lacked the bold flavor I expect from Cajun food and tasted pretty weird. If I ever gave it another shot I'd probably try a poboy. read more

I'm really split on this place for sure. The gumbo was good, a bit darker and plainer on the roux itself but the sausage and other fillings more than made up for it, and the po boy was incredible. Definitely do the combo if you can it's a good way to get a chance to taste both. I went with the oyster and shrimp po boy and it was one of the best things I ate on my trip. Where things fall apart a bit for me is the beignets. We were looking for a quick convenient spot to grab some food and my husband loves beignets so it felt like a no brainer. The menu did not mention them being filled with anything or served with chocolate sauce drizzle and ice cream. He can't have chocolate or dairy so when the first set comes out and they have chocolate drizzle on them so we tell the waitress he can't have the chocolate so she takes them away and comes back with another set almost right away but without the chocolate drizzle. Then he tries one and it's full of chocolate. We mention that and she's like well half of them are lemon. We didn't expect any of them to be anything since our prior experience is just light and airy sweet dough covered in powdered sugar and maybe served with a sauce. These were more like doughnut holes with filling. So despite the amazing service otherwise and the restaurant being so spacious we didn't even notice a huge party this is a 3.5/5 for us. Definitely could have been a 4.5 if they had stuck the landing for sure. read more

A rainy day prompted me to head to this little spot. I ordered the chicken gumbo and at the servers recommendation, the jalapeño cornbread. My server was so sweet and accommodating. The whole staff really seemed happy you were there which was a nice touch. They set me up at the bar so I could enjoy the World Cup final. The gumbo arrived hot and loaded with chicken, andouille sausage, okra, rice and more. It was love at first bite. The roux is so flavorful and it really hit the spot on a rainy day. The cornbread accompanied with butter was served steaming hot. So good! A bowl of their chicken gumbo and the cornbread came out to about $21, a price I will happily pay for such a great bowl. I'm struggling to review gumbo house as there was many bright spots, but also a particular miss for me personally. As a person who loves Cajun food, I was excited to try Gumbo House. I ended up ordering a bowl of Chicken Gumbo and Cobbler as I wasn't in a particular mood for seafood. The Gumbo had hearty, had a good amount of sausages and the okra had a good consistency with a bit of crunch left in it. The flavor of the gumbo was a bit more bland then what I was hoping for, but the flavor profile would be better for someone like my wife who would've enjoyed it. I honestly wasn't expecting some INSANE Gumbo experience when I came here but sadly I was still let down. I like the interior of the place and the service was pretty good it's just the food wasn't a hit at all. Tried a few things and some were ok and some were just not good. Ordered the Crab cakes and Jambalaya both were bad. The Crab cakes felt like those frozen crab cake patties you get from the grocery store and the Jambalaya wasn't even a rice dish, it was some form of soup. I've never in all my years seen Jambalaya as a soup. The Wings were pretty good and the Catfish wasn't terrible but nothing special. We heard some good things about Gumbo House and had a friend playing music there, so we got a group of friends together to give them a go! While I'm not big on several Cajun foods, I was still looking forward to it! The space is quite large and it appears it's been updated from some reviews saying there were only a few tables up front. We ended up with several tables pushed together off to the west side of the kitchen, right in front of our friends playing! Difficult spot to socialize but that was perfectly okay! The temperature in the restaurant was uncomfortably hot... and that's saying a lot from someone who is almost always cold. Some of the prices were a bit hefty on alcohol, which was unfortunate as well. While it was mentioned after giving me our checks, nowhere did I see on the menu or anywhere else that gratuity was going to be added to the check. Our server made a killing off of 5 couples! Along with that, they've jumped on the credit card fee bandwagon. Disappointed with both of those. As for the food, everyone enjoyed it. Several mentioned how amazing the cornbread was! Everything from jambalaya, bisque, ribs, pasta, fried okra and calamari are what I remember seeing everyone enjoy. Overall pretty good. I remember when this place was at the pink house - the shrimp po'boy was overflowing with blackened shrimp. Now, maybe 5 small shrimps in a full sandwich - a bite is mostly bread. The halibut po'boy (the nights special) was a thin sliver of a filet that was over cooked and dry. And the gumbo had a layer of grease on top. I went to an event where the catering was from this place and I have a bowl of jambalaya. First, there was a bone not visible when I had the bite. I managed to take it out from my mouth quickly. Second bite was okay and the third bite, a second bone was stuck in my throat. It was very hard to take it out and I was choking. I was in a ski place in a mountain. An ambulance would take a long time to get there. Luckily for me, I was with some friends but when I told the guy from this restaurant, he wouldn't even care. Trivia: What is the tasty green veggie (abelmoschus esculentus), with white seeds, in the gumbo, that looks like jalapeño slices? Great service! Friendly and helpful. Attentive without being overbearing. Beer available. Limited selection, but good variety. The Gumbo, Jambalaya, Red Beans and Rice meal is a great introduction to the fare. It comes with French style bread that I ONLY ever get at places with Jambalaya or Gumbo. It's soft and tasty and delicious. The type of bread you just can't NOT eat. Ambiance: Awkwardly, the restaurant is huge but they only sat people in the front part. This was problematic for two reasons: 1. Close quarters to the tables with screaming kids. I am not a parent and I have the utmost respect for parents. Tough, TOUGH job. 2. The draft. The door that says, "Go to the next one" was slightly cracked bringing an unpleasant and cold draft through the front of the restaurant. I know it is hard to appease everyone. Some like it hot, some like it cold, some like (fill in the blank). I guess I wish a hostess would ask, "Would prefer a breeze of chilly air or a pleasantly warm and toasty atmosphere?" Notables: Don't feel like you have to eat all the meal. They will bring separate containers and a bag for you to carry them in. Cleanliness: bathrooms were well stocked and clean. To start, the house lemonade was great it had nice hints of ginger throughout the drink and was very refreshing. The calamari remoulade was ok. Came out hot and fresh with bread on the side, but that's about it without the remoulade the calamari was leaving a lot to be desired The Crab Cakes were probably the most disappointing thing that was ordered besides the price the flavor wasn't really there. Also, the Crab Cakes were so dry, so thank goodness it came with its own remoulade sauce, which has carried two appetizers so far Now to the main course, the Crayfish Etoufee. First of all, it was ok. It had a nice tomato flavor, but I had a little bits of bay leafs that I would have to pick out. Like most dishes at this place, it was just ok. The last couple times I was up in Anchorage I've been thinking about the Gumbo House and finally gave it a try. I went with the Kitchen Sink Gumbo with chicken, oysters, shrimp, and sausage. The flavor of the gumbo was great, though I could have used a little more spice. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the chicken. It very mushy and the shrimp were over cooked. But the oysters and sausage were perfect. The Po-boy was great! Good bread, the shrimp were cooked perfectly. I would certainly have one again. The service here was great as well. Though I didn't completely love my experience, it does have potential and I would be willing to try the Gumbo House again. read more

Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for a late lunch while in town visiting. The place was moderately busy and we were seated quickly. It's well-decorated in the style of New Orleans. They seemed to be a little short handed, so service was a little slow and lost at times. Servers stopped by our table twice with food for other people. Our server was friendly enough, but there was clearly some service confusion. That didn't bother us, and we rolled with it. Ordered a cup of the crawfish gumbo, calamari, and corn bread. The calamari appears to be "formed" calamari, which appears made from real calamari formed into sticks. Not what we expected, but we went with it. The breading was light and crispy, but the "stick" form of calamari didn't work for us. Having said that, we're in a remote area of the country getting calamari so we can give them some slack. Not sure how easy it is to get fresh calamari up here. The crawfish gumbo was decent, with a little heat, but a little underwhelming in the end. Again, getting gumbo in Alaska is still a treat. The real treat for us was the jalapeño cornbread. That made the meal worth the stop. read more
