Took my niece and mom for the tea service here on a Sunday mid-day. The experience was lovely, the food was delicious, and my family LOVED it! It's a great deal for $50. And the explanations of everything and the pride radiating from the owners is just priceless. This continues to be one of my favorite places in Atlanta!
Adorable Indonesian cafe! I really enjoyed my es kacang and the kaya toast. The es kacang was just a tad too sweet for me. I would get the kaya toast again but ask if I could get it without butter. I know that's the classic way to have it but I can't get used to it haha. Def worth a try if you want to try something different!
The restaurant is in the same plaza as Bo Bo Garden, next to ICE NY. There are plenty of parking spots in the plaza. I booked a tea party lunch session on the weekend with my friend, and we both had a wonderful experience. They also accommodate a vegan menu for tea party bookings. Our names were printed on the menu, which was a very nice touch. There is a large collection of teas to choose from, along with a detailed menu. They let you smell the teas from a tea tray, which helps a lot when choosing the one you like. The staff explained each tea and recommended flavors based on our personal tastes. They also introduced and explained the sweet and savory items on the menu. We had panda tea and hibiscus tea. The sweet and savory tea party lunch set was delicious and represented Indonesian desserts well. We enjoyed the savory items more than the sweet ones, but we loved the great variety of desserts. We especially loved the presentation. Everything came together to create a lovely experience and a wonderful girls' hangout time. The place is quaint and cute. The staff is super friendly and attentive. Her posture while pouring tea was very elegant. It happened that the weekend we chose was right before Valentine's weekend, so the restaurant was not too crowded, which was a plus for us. However, their lunch party sessions are normally fully booked and busy, especially on weekends. You should definitely call and book ahead if you want to experience this lunch tea party. 12/10 highly recommend this experience, especially for girls' dates. I will come back to try other à la carte items from the menu.
This is another great addition on BuHi! I knew I had to try this place when I found out they have Kaya toast. I've been looking for Kaya toasts in ATL since trying it the first time in Singapore. The ambiance of this place is so chic and adorable! You order at the counter and they will bring your order to your table. I had a friend already snag a table before I got there. I'm not sure what she ordered but I of course had to get a kaya toast with pandan and bajigur. My order came out super fast and I couldn't wait to get in the kaya toast. The toast was delicious but quite messy to eat since the butter was melting fast. The bajigur was very ginger heavy but had a nice sweetness and addition of coconut milk. The employee said I could ask for less ginger next time! Overall, I'm impressed with this place and would love to try more Indonesian treats! They also serve brunch on the weekends now.
I will start by saying gratuity is included. I saw my bill as a total on a screen not knowing this. So I added a gratuity of $20. The included gratuity was already $25. So let them bring the bill to your table or pay attention to the fine print. Besides that happening my visit was great. The place looks nice and the tea sets are beautiful. The staff is helpful, parking is easy and I loved most of the food. If I didn't love it, the experience of trying something new was satisfying. This is good for a group of 6 or less but the place is small. Any group bigger than 6 will be a tight squeeze. I will be back for more tea and maybe a few sweet potato treats.
Overall Gula was an interesting and refreshing find. They specialize in Indonesian sweets, and it was fun to discover a different kind of dessert third space in the neighborhood. If you've never tried Indonesian desserts, this is absolutely worth a visit. What makes it unique The menu felt genuinely different from the usual Asian dessert spots. Lots of tropical and Indonesian flavors like: * Pandan * Black glutinous rice * Durian * Passion fruit * Lychee and other tropical fruit drinks and desserts Tea party set and value They recently started a tea party set that looked amazing for about $50 (around $48 per person depending on how it's listed). For comparison, a similar experience we saw in Victoria was $109 per person (Canadian dollars), so this felt like a strong value for the experience. Flavor highlights * Pandan squeeze or pandan paste: a standout. It reminded me of ube, and honestly sometimes it tasted even better than ube. * Black glutinous rice: really enjoyable, though sweeter than my personal preference. That said, compared to many US desserts, it still felt relatively not too sweet, which was refreshing. Important note about coloring A lot of the desserts use artificial coloring. If artificial coloring puts you off (same for me), you may not love every item visually or conceptually. But if you can look past that, the flavors are still worth exploring. Ambience and seating The ambience is very quiet, calm, and pleasant. There's a decent amount of seating, and the space felt like it had enough room for a wheelchair. It also seemed kid friendly. Would I recommend it? Yes. Strongly recommend going at least once for the experience and to try Indonesian desserts, especially if you like pandan, tropical fruit flavors, or want a fun tea set without luxury pricing.
Gula Indonesia Desserts is as the name states: an Indonesian dessert spot! It is located in a plaza on Buford Highway, so it is in a great location for all things food. The interior is a bit small with some seating here and there, but it is aesthetically decorated with lots of earthy tones. The service is quick as well. We got the Dirty Matcha Latte and Es Campur. I liked the Es Campur as it tasted very familiar to me, kind of like a variation of Southeast Asian desserts such as the halo-halo and chè thái. It is a very refreshing and sweet dessert, although I probably could have done without the avocado topped inside. I would come back to try their other desserts and drinks!
Never had an Indonesian dessert place in ATL! Gula just opened about 3 weeks ago and replaced the old mango mango dessert place. We ordered Es Cendol and Bubar Campur. It was so unique and delicious. The Es Cendol was made of Palm sugar, coconut milk and then rice flour jelly. It tastes very similar to coffee but yet there's no coffee in there! It mixes very well with the pandan rice flour jelly. The Bubar Campur was great as well! With black sticky rice, pandan custard, sweet potato ball, taro ball. The combinations work really well and it was a flavorful combination. Will definitely come back
I was NOT ready for this aesthetic cafe filled with delicious and beautiful desserts. This is Gula, the FIRST Indonesian dessert café in Georgia, and their soft opening is already changing the game. Think refreshing tropical treats you've never had before--like shaved ice covered in fruit and avocado, rich carmelized palm sugar and coconut drinks. Cendol, silky pandan jelly in icy palm sugar syrup, and shaved ice creations that taste like a vacation in Bali. It's sweet, it's cold, it's vibrant, and it's a flavor journey you can't get anywhere else. I'm obsessed. Amazing service also.
We were eating at Bobo Garden and saw that this place had just opened! It's a cute interior and the folks working are really nice. They also own IndoEats, the indonesian grocery store a few doors down. We tried the Cendol, which was great! We love the flavors and hope that this place can grow!
Been excited to try this Indonesian dessert spot and ordered the Es Durian, Es Cendol, Bubur Campur, and Pisang Bakar. The Es Durian was really good with chunks of durian and refreshing taste. The Bubur Campur was unique and colorful with different flavors and textures. The Es Cendol drink was plain and too sweet. I was not a fan of the chocolate sprinkles in the Pisang Bakar. The interior is warm, cozy, and has an elevated vibe. There's small tables for drinks/desserts and large tables for afternoon tea. Overall pricey for what it was and I wanted to like it more. I do want to come back and try the afternoon tea.
This space was very clean and nice and comfy. The drinks were great I recommend the matcha over coffee drinks and their traditional ice cream deserts. the matcha was very floral and strong I could actually taste it wasn't too busy when we went on a Friday night
As I was walking past to get to another restaurant, Gula's sign caught my eye. As an Indonesian-American, I rarely see anything written in Indonesian out in the wild! So of course, I had to wander inside. What a sight to see in the U.S.! All my favorite desserts available! I ordered Es Cendol and it brought back so many sweet memories of being in Indonesia with my loved ones. That's the true power of delicious food! The cafe was so adorable and the staff were kind and attentive too. Would recommend -- for Indonesians looking for a slice of the islands, or newcomers to our culture!
Such a cute and clean place with a beautiful tea set-up at the long table. I got the mango sago dessert and it was very pretty, great textures with a smooth creamy sauce. I earnestly wanted to love this dessert but the mangos were still tart and it really took away from the overall flavor of the dish. I added sticky rice but it was unflavored so no additional sweetness to cut the tartness of the mango. I wanted to note that the sticky rice was perfectly cooked with right amount of chewiness. I understand that Asian desserts are made with less sugar but being overly cautious made this dish less fulfilling for me. read more
Gula ('sugar' in Indonesian) is a wonderful addition to Buford Highway's rich Asian sweet treat scene. I've never had Indonesian desserts before, so was very excited about this. We tried the: - Es Cendol (coconut milk, palm sugar, pandan rice flour jelly): The more I drank this, the more it grew on me- a little reminiscent of brown sugar boba. We added jackfruit, but I don't think that's needed. - Bubur Campur (black sticky rice, pandan custard, sweet potato & taro ball, tapioca jelly, side coconut milk): I liked all the toppings, but the texture of the rice wasn't really my vibe. Glad I tried this, but probably wouldn't get again. - Kaya Toast: This was my surprise favorite, loved the kaya ('coconut') jam, which was on the sweeter side with notes of caramel. The bread was perfectly toasted, and the slabs of butter were complementary. Persimmon is also my favorite fruit, so points given for that haha. I may or may not have gone to my local Asian grocery store to purchase kaya jam the next day. Service was friendly and fast. The only thing I'll mention is that some of the larger tables had tea sets but nothing indicating that sitting there wasn't allowed (later we learned they have afternoon high tea most days). The shop is relatively small and was packed when we went on a Saturday night so not having 3 large tables available was a bit inconvenient. I'd maybe suggest setting up before/after hours, rather than when other paying customers could be using the space. Regardless, this was a unique experience, 8.5/10 would recommend! read more

Super aesthetic and cute spot! I got the cendol drink. It was soo good and fragrant. The pandan jelly was so fragrant and had a good texture to it. The palm sugar and coconut milk was such a good mix. Would definitely come back to try with durian. This drink was super filling as well. Will definitely be back and can't wait for the full menu. read more

Not too shabby. The 'durian crushed ice' was pretty good. I gave 3 stars cos they could have given more crushed ice. We grow up eating this , so the volume of ice needs to be more for a more complete experience of eating this dessert, if that makes sense . read more

This is my second visit @Gula. I love every bite. This time I brought a friend with me to try their desserts. Surprisingly, the owner "daughter" remembers my face. We both love our dish. "Es durian & es doger" not too sweet. This place becomes one of favorite place to stop by. read more

We got the Es Campur and the Es Buah -- both so delicious. Everything we saw on other people's tables also looked amazing. The cashier was very friendly and accommodating. It was a great experience and I highly recommend to anyone interested in Indonesian desserts! Had not tried anything like it before and have 0 regrets! read more

Authentic, exotic and unique flavors, extensive premium tea selection, impeccable service, and relaxing ambiance. Our party of 8 tried their high tea and we were thoroughly impressed. They are so attentive to details. Each one in our party had their menu cards personalized. They served us fresh tropical fruits when we went in December (rambutan & dragon fruit). Came here as a stop on a road trip and it was so delicious! My daughters and I shared a couple of the desserts and we thoroughly enjoyed trying them! The owners are super sweet and checked on us to make sure we liked everything- we will be back!! read more
