Why 4 stars? Because this was a solid pregame meal. --- --- --- On our walk to Dodger stadium, my friend recommended that we stop in at Guisados. I didn't know it was a chain until I ended up seeing what felt like 50 Guisado's locations throughout my few days in LA. That same friend recommended the taco sampler, which I was happy to oblige so that I could try as many as possible. The only bummer was that it did not include the seafood tacos, so naturally, I ordered the sampler + two full size seafood tacos. Between the 6 mini tacos which were all essentially, one large bite each, and the 2 full size tacos, I didn't dislike any of them. A couple were of the 5-star variety, while the rest were solid 4's. But convenience wise, this was a really good rec from my friend. Our walk from our hotel to the stadium was probably close to 3 miles by the time we actually got in our seats, so it was nice to have a little break here about halfway in between. read more

I ordered a Mexicana Breakfast burrito. I was so completely disappointed. That burrito was so tiny! It was a 3 bite burrito for a petite woman, would've been a 2 bite burrito for a big man. I paid over $10.00! Mind you, it had zero meat product. I did not order a drink or anything else. The burrito was equivalent to one egg, 1/4 tsp of jalapeno, 1/4 tsp of tomato, 1/4 slab of Velveta cheese and a small tortilla. To think I passed 4 other breakfast places to try their breakfast burrito. Super disappointed! Not at all worth its value. I will stick to their sampler platter and fish tacos! Now excuse me while I rummage my refrigerator to find something else to eat. PS: I've uploaded a picture of the burrito so you can see that I am not exaggerating. Guisados, I am a loyal patron of your establishment and have taken many people there for dinners. Please be mindful that this burrito was on the level of price gouging. We work HARD for our money. On average most people work for approximately $18 an hour, so someone would have to work 30 minutes hustling their tails off to eat these two measly bites. That's not ok! There's a place in Glendale named Lupita's tamales on San Fernando road, they have the same price point but their burrito is about 2lbs and is LOADED with eggs, rice, salsa, chill rellano! I came here one night in between visiting sports venues and decided to get something filling and affordable. This is one of my go-to spots if I decide to eat outside of Dodger Stadium. I got a few tacos including the steak picado and chorizo. The steak picado had flank steak that was simmered with green bell peppers and bacon. It was also served with black beans and green serrano chile. Next up, I got the chorizo taco, which was a Mexican sausage served with green serrano chile, black beans, and red onions. These were so good and the amount was just right! I also ordered pollo tamales, which were filled with shredded chicken in green chile and it was delicious as well! Lastly, the Quesadilla con Chorizo was a great addition to the meal! It had queso panela that was grilled and combined with chorizo along with a serving of mild chipotle sour cream. Got lunch here with coworkers. Parking can be a real challenge as they have a small parking lot and there is limited street parking. You order at the counter and they bring your food out if you're eating it there. They have limited counter seating by the entrance and also some patio seating. Ambiance was nice with some colorful mural art. I got the chorizo breakfast burrito ($8.50) which includes pork chorizo, egg, cheese, and chile verde. I excluded the beans. These are my favorite tacos. They're not your normal tacos. These meats are slow cooked. Which means tons of flavor, juicy, and tender. Everything here is good. The tortillas are unique. Super fresh and a nice chew. My favorite is the cochinita pibil. It is pork with pickled onions on top. It's spicy and you can ask them to adjust the spicy level on a 1-10 scale. I like mine at 7. It's a tradition when we go to a Dodger Game we come here first. I'd rather eat here than stadium food. This location is great, love the patio seating outside & some seats inside as well. I always love the Sample platter cause you can try Different ones. I personally love their chicken Mole and their black bean mini tacos. Their ceviche tostada is also another favorite. Their drink selection and their Aguas Frescas are always refreshing. Whenever there is a Dodger Game they make a blue Horchata it's good but I rather have the melon water it's so refreshing. Parking is a bit tight you can prolly for 5 cars near the restaurant and that's it it's always a drag to wait and just move around for a parking. They used to have a different lot close by for extra cars but as of recent they don't have it anymore, I asked and she said they don't have access to it anymore. Parking can be a bit difficult and can make the experience meh but we waited maybe 10 min and then we were able to get a parking. It's def worth for the tacos. This is my preferred Guisados location. This is the one that looks like the Los Angeles the movies promised us. It's in a hilly area. Hills that are not comically steep like in San Francisco, but the undulant L.A. type of hills. Matching these vertical curves are the horizontal curves of Sunset Boulevard. The cluster of downtown skyscrapers is over there in the background. And, let's face it, Guisados began as L.A.'s hipster taco of record. The hipster shall reside ever in Echo Park. I realize the original is in Boyle Heights. But Guisados is not a Boyle Heights taqueria. Al and Bea's with its Pachuco style burrito runs Boyle Heights. The mariscos trucks on Olympic run Boyle Heights. Boyle Heights, by and large, does not smear black beans on its tacos, does not do veggie tacos. Most Mexicans from anywhere will prepare veggie tacos at home, few will accept them at the TQ. This became evident when ordering the tacos calabaza or ongos at the OG location. They weren't bad, but they had no zip. They tasted like they were passed their prime. Not spoiled, but like they were on the other side of their peak. I chalked it up to the veggie fillings not getting the rotation of the meat fillings. I had some of the papa y chorizo and it was loaded with potency. I really believe - as good as the meat and fish tacos are - the best of Guisados are the veggie selections. They get so much flavor out of zucchini, mushrooms and nopales. Of course everything is enhanced when its surrounded by their fresh tortillas, so deeply corny, and even slightly creamy(?). Having placed the laurel over the veg tacos, I still have to say that the chuleta verde is a flavor spectacular, as is the camaron. But the true explosion is the novelty, taco de chiles torreados. An assortment of chiles, to wit, serranos, fresh arboles, and habanero are seared over a flame. Then, they're tucked into a tortilla. To top it off is a glug of habanero salsa. I'm talking a Yucatan style habanero salsa, which is pretty much habanero liquidized with water and salt, maybe a little onion and very little garlic. To balance the heat, you have the tortilla, and the smear of black beans. That's all you have to protect you. It's like if Wyatt Earp showed up to the O.K. Corral with only his brothers and no Doc Holiday. You prepare for certain death. The first bite of the chile torreado you taste the sweet frutiness created by the beta carotenes in the habanero. For whatever reason, the mechanics of our palate makes it so sweet flavors are tasted before the capsaicin is felt. You believe for a brief moment that all is manageable. Then the pain and the tears and the snot come running. read more

The food may be small in size but it's big on flavor. And their shrimp tacos hit every time. I've been here a few times. Once before a dodger game, another we placed a Togo order and last was on a random Tuesday before the usual lunch rush. When I went before the game, the tiny parking lot was packed. I suggest taking the first spot you find on the street and walking. I loved that their Horchata was Dodger blue that day. I'm not sure if that is a regular thing during baseball season, but it was fun and festive! They offer so many different options of filling, accommodating vegetarian options, different proteins, etc. The mole, the tinga, the cochinita pibil, the chicharrón...WHEWWWW all of them are amazing. Also, if you make it early for breakfast, their breakfast tacos are delightful too. I HIGHLY recommend getting the sampler platter the first time you go--it's the best way to try a bunch of tacos with fewer bites. Then you can go in with your favorites for the full-size. The drinks are delicious, try an agua fresca! Parking at this location is pretty simple. This Guisados is located in Echo Park, closer to Silver Lake / Chinatown-ish. They are off of Sunset Blvd where it's like a trash marsh. The area looks really dirty with trash and overgrown weeds. Luckily they have a tiny parking lot - only four spots though - and free street parking adjacent to the restaurant. Their order window faces the street. Then you can go into the dining area to the right. They have a larger outdoor seating area, which feels less claustrophobic. They take your name for the order, and they bring the food out to you. You have to grab your own utensils. There is a water dispenser at the door that leads to the outdoor patio. Their tortillas felt almost mushy/sticky (?), compared to dry, store-bought corn tortillas. They put just enough filling in the taco so that it's not terribly messy imo. The bistek con salsa roja were really good. I decided to try the chile relleno because it was the special. It wasn't bad, but it made me feel like a vegetarian. I want to try the shrimp next time. It def looks better and tastier. read more
