Nice patio, friendly service, and great grits bowls! Highly recommend the grits bowl with turkey sausage, red pepper paste, green onions and an egg on top. Very filling for under $10! The grits had good flavor and consistently. The egg was perfectly cooked and the quantity of sausage was a good balance to the dish. The red pepper sauce the dish is topped with give it a good bit of flavor and adding some hot sauce made for perfect bites! I also ordered a sweet potato biscuit on the side for $3, which came with raspberry preserves and butter. The toppings made the biscuit edible - it was a waste of $3! The biscuit seemed over cooked with hard edges and barely any parts of the entire thing were soft. I picked it apart to find some salvageable bits but would never order again. My dining companion also ordered one and hers was equally unappetizing and seemingly over cooked. Not sure if we just got a bad batch or if their biscuits just aren't that good. The iced coffee here comes with coffee ice cubes which was a nice touch! I would go here again for a cheap bite if I was passing through town again, but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. It was good for a quick pull off the highway breakfast that was fast, friendly and filling. read more

Grub is a neat restaurant. In all of my time exploring and eating in Durham, I didn't know it existed until recently. It was packed and busy so I knew from the jump that I was getting into something good. They have a very cozy space on the inside where you can order, but the staff seems to handle traffic well. I had Saturday brunch and the food was decent. I would love to go back and dive into their menu. It's a great place to eat but it also has nice outside seating and rooftop area that's perfect for chilling on a warm summer day. Overall thumbs up! read more

Wonderful food and atmosphere. I went when there was a big snow storm and they were one of the only restraints open. Even though they were very busy they were kind and very intentional in their service and conversations with the customers. They also seemed happy to be there even on a day most would rather be home. Grub had a pretty long line on a Sunday morning so I was hoping it would be really good. They were sold out of baked goods by 10:30, and were not able to make hot drinks. Also they were very rude which was kind of disappointing considering it was $16 for a sub par breakfast. read more

The atmosphere and food was great! However, I am extremely disappointed in their Bloody Mary. It was just downright terrible and I couldn't do it. The table next to us said the same thing. It was very astringent and watered down. I cannot get that awful taste out of my mouth. A new Bloody recipe could be huge for this place as it's a popping brunch spot. read more

My family celebrated my mother's 98th birthday at Grub. The service was exceptional, the food was phenomenal! But the Red Velvet Cake stole the show!!! What a cool place! The building is really nice, looks like a repurposed gas station (doesn't sound nice, just trust me) food was so good. Best bird sandwich is highly recommended. This place was fantastic! My friend and I sat at the bar. We got there around 11. They were serving both breakfast and lunch. Fun fact: they serve breakfast/brunch until 3pm which is really nice. I ordered the Rocket, scrambled eggs with cheese, fruit, turkey sausage, and a biscuit. My friend ordered the Best Bird Biscuit. Both dishes were absolutely amazing and the lady at the bar was super friendly and attentive!! She was not only working the bar but also running everyone's food who was sitting down and ringing people up. Major props to her! Went here for brunch this morning and fell in love. New V family hangout for sure! First of all, it's built in an old filling station with modern kitchy-cool decor. I especially liked the wallpaper in the bathroom: custom made of local Durham places of interest/historic significance. Little V's insisted on rooftop eating, and it wasn't too hot. They have pretty good shade coverage although the gaps meant moving the table throughout the meal to stay out of the sun. FYI stairs seem to be only access to roof, but if you are unable to climb stairs fear not: the inside and outside lower level are just as great! Now, on to the food... Best. Grit bowls. In. Town. Mrs. V had the West End bowl, I ordered the fried chicken, bacon, and sweet pickle relish biscuit (can't remember the name). We got a homemade donut and cinnamon roll and the little V's shared chocolate chip pancakes and turkey sausage sides. I've tried to break down this miracle of a meal into sections: Price: reasonable. Portion size: a tad smaller than I'd like but not a big deal. Flavor: YUM. The food really really tastes homemade. If your grandma ever made homemade fried donuts that JUST what Grub's tastes like. The cinnamon roll had a lot of vanilla (maybe a little almond extract) in the icing, which was not your typical icing: softer and more like a thick whipped cream. The little V's couldn't get over the homeade donut, which was sweetened with honey rather than a dumpload of sugar. The grits bowl was a mouth-gasm of tomato relish, PERFECTLY cooked grits, sausage chunks (sausage also tasted very 'made in house btw'). What Mr. V's hypertension really liked was the salt... in this case the lack of it! How refreshing to eat a grits bowl, normally a salty thing, and not taste searing salt. Of course, you can always add salt but too many places just assume you want a ton and dump it on. Not Grub Durham. They let me choose how salty I wanted my food. My cardiologist and I thank you! OK, long review but I am so into this place I had to pour out my heart and judgements. Go here. The atmosphere and food here is spectacular. The service is fantastic. We ate here for both lunch and breakfast in two days. Breakfast is served till 3pm I think. I had "The Rocket". OMG. Best eggs ever. Best grits ever. Maple bacon and Sweet potato biscuits. I had never had sweet potato biscuits but I took four home with me. Their homemade mud pie and peanut butter pie is legendary. This is a tough one. Three-stars is a compromise between a five-star rating for a cool, friendly and mostly flavorful place, and a one-star rating, all because of one totally tone-deaf aspect of one dish. The coffee was good and my wife liked the standard scrambled eggs, sausge and biscuit. I had the Cowgirl Bowl - grits, scrambled eggs, onions, tomatoes, etc, and beef brisket. Overall, it was good. But, silly me, I saw beef bisket and assumed that it would be shredded, moist, and flavorful. I never considered that any restaurant would be dumb enough to cut dried-up, day-old beef brisket into 3/4-inch cubes and expect their customers to gnaw through it. Unbelievable! We'll go back - we especially want to try their lunch or dinner - but the Cowgirl Bowl is off the list of choices unless they seve it with moist, shredded brisket or if they will substitute sausage patties for the brisket. Give them a try. But be warned. read more

We've been to Grub several times now, and each visit was excellent. The food is top notch--carefully prepared, expertly seasoned and appointed, well priced, and delivered relatively quickly even when they're busy. The "order at the counter" model works well for them, and everyone who works there is friendly and helpful. The roof-top dining area is great even when it's hot outside-- it's well shaded, has ceiling fans, and gets a good breeze. The inside is great, too-- they've kept some of the original architectural features, and wblend well with the hop cafe vibe they're cultivating. Some of my favorites are the wings, which they smoke in house, the greek salad, and the pastrami sandwich. read more

Mediocre at best. I had the pimento sandwich with the house chips. Sandwich came out cold, maybe I'm weird but most pimento sandwiches i've had come out warm. Chips were good though! My partner had the slammer, which was a lot of food for the price but the sausage was overly salty, so disgusting that it wasn't worth eating more than a bite. We both had the sweet tea and it was also good. We went shortly after 12pm on a Saturday and it was very crowded and very very loud. At least the food came out quickly. For the spot it's in in the Lakewood area, it's an affordable option. But you get what you pay for, which is mediocrity. At least the ambiance is cool. read more

Yuuuuuuummmmmmmmmm!! Wow we finally found our burger place. Their burger is less than 10 dollars and absolutely amazing. Cooked to order, always to temp, and just made with fresh ingredients. I have not had anything else but I'm sure the rest of their menu is similar. My impression is that their style is homemade and locally sourced. The beer is also super cheap! eat up! read more

We ordered curbside for lunch, I got a breakfast plate and my spouse got the chicken salad. The food was melted into the plastic container so that was off putting. They gave me toast instead of biscuits and I can't be sure but I think they gave me pork sausage instead of the turkey I ordered. Chicken salad was good and fresh though. read more

Love the design and decor of this place. Lots of cute drawings and pictures in a chic, rustic cafe/bar with ample seating outside and on the roof. It's very smart to have a separate window for to-go orders and rooftop dining since this place gets packed on a Sunday morning! Not enough parking to accommodate all the customers, and anyone sitting at or near the bar has to deal with a long line of people waiting to order brushing up against them. The food took a little while to arrive, but it was good and not expensive. The sweet potato biscuit and raspberry preserves were super tasty. Best Bird is a solid chicken biscuit, and Wonder Woman Eats Her Veggies is a filling egg sandwich. Pretty pleased with the experience overall. read more

What a wonderful addition to the Durham scene--fast, flavorful, inventive food served with funk. We thoroughly enjoyed the British style of pub ordering at the counter with the added benefit the staff cared about you and helped with the menu selections. A nice variety of unexpected combinations of food made our selections all the more challenging. Since we dine with differing appetites (one vegan, one carnivore), its always important to see attention on the menu to accommodating both of us. That is certainly the case here--in particular the beer-dipped mushroom sandwich was exceptionally flavorful and enjoyable. Service was very quick and, yet, the meals were clearly hand-made and freshly assembled. My wife specifically noted she wanted to remember their salad as "Best Salad in Durham" for the next Indy awards! Everyone there cares about succeeding; several staff and the owner stopped by to check in on our meals and, as we left, the line was, indeed, out the door with incoming new guests. We wandered up to the rooftop dining area; it was a pleasant surprise and definitely a destination on the next trip. I hope you enjoy Grub as we did; definitely will be on our short list for quick, wonderful meals, especially heading down to a ball game or show. read more
