Good vibe, very friendly and helpful staff. I didn't love my meal (but that was personal preference to what I got...) but everyone I was with LOVED their food. We went for a casual double date night with friends and it was perfect for that. It does close earlier (9p) but they didn't make us leave immediately which was kind. They could have also been more efficient with service as there was a long line and only 1 cash register open BUT overall great place to go. They have a ton of outdoor seating which is perfect for this time of year. We'll be back! read more

The food and atmosphere is great. It's a nice little place. It's gotten a bit too big for its size/design. The counter ordering style model means we were waiting a half hour before even ordering our food. Again, I love the food and my whole party was satisfied, but by the time we got our food things were getting desperate. read more

Surprisingly quick service on a weekend at lunchtime. Food is yummy and fresh. Not over-flavored, but not bland either. The scene/ambiance is bright, comfortable, clean, and natural- feeling. Great for a sunny day, because there are lots of windows. read more

Food is good for the price. Service was fast. Great ambience for a meal with the kids. However, when I asked for a cup of tap water, the person taking orders and manning the register said I would have to buy their branded bottled water and that they can't do tap water because of ... Covid! That certainly tarnished my experience. read more

Casual southern comfort. Grub's space is standout, rooftop and ground level patios fit all of the fresh-air-seeking brunchers. The menu is subdued, but has a bit of anything you'd want: sandwiches, salads, soups, breakfast favorites. Did I say they make both sweet potato and buttermilk biscuits to rival Rise? Perfectly tender, and not greasy. Fried chicken done right with bread and butter pickles and a sweet sauce make the perfect breakfast sandwich. I enjoyed their grits, myself, this weekend and couldn't have been more pleased. Creamy, textured, and topped with tender brisket. They serve breakfast plates with a green salad and fresh fruit, a sign of a great brunch. read more

Based on Brunch only. Do yourself a favor and sit at the bar (if open) for some quick and friendly service. Tamika was the highlight of our meal, making great mimosas and the BEST spicy bloody mary, with a smile and good convo. The food was also great, the grit bowls are well sized and the grits are cooked just right. The nut butter is DELICIOUS, make sure to get it with the bagel and ask for a side of jelly, best combo around! Ordering is done at the window outside or at the register up front (unless you sit at the bar)! Overall the space is very welcoming and open, even when crazy busy. Truly a bright spot for Durham! read more

OMG what a find. We were in the area and looked up places to grab a bite. The menu looked interesting so we tried. The restaurant is in an old gas station and it's wonderful what they have done with it. We were greeted immediately and were told to seat ourselves. Sorry to say I can not elaborate on our exact meal as our visit was a month ago and do not remember what we ordered. I can say the meals we both had were very satisfying. Also enjoyed a beer. Very upbeat. Would love to visit this location again. read more

Went here for a quick dinner and ordered the burger and fries. I ordered the burger well done and it was very tough and dry. I admit that it can sometimes be very hard to cook a well done burger just right to still maintain the quality of the meat, so I won't judge them too hard because of this. The burger toppings were good. The one I ordered came with bacon and a special sauce. The sauce was tasty. I ordered my burger with the chips and they were pretty good. I love the decor and the fun colors and bright vibe of the restaurant. They even have a roof top. I didn't visit the roof top but I could see it when I pulled up. I like that they have covered outdoor seating. And they also have a good amount of parking which is good considering that they are in the downtownish area and there sometimes isn't a lot of parking in this area. Overall the burger was just okay. Next time I might try medium well but over all, because of the atmosphere and the fast service I will give this restaurant another try. read more

Grub could be better if they cared a little more about their customers. Some of its reviews mention an extremely unpleasant cashier, and you'll know exactly who they're referring to the second you arrive. On my first visit, after waiting in line for 15 minutes, she announced she was ready to take my order. The second I started to speak, she cuts me off and ambles away. She looks around with no clear intentions in mind, has some unrelated back and forth with the cashier opposite of her, and then finally returns her surly gaze back to me a couple of minutes after telling me she was ready to take my order. No apologies or reasons offered, just an awful first impression and extremely rude. I ordered a $3 16 oz. iced coffee, which came with two inches of room at the top and half ice cubes, a poorly seasoned burger that was otherwise overpowered by its saccharinely sweet maple bacon, and some pretty standard house chips with an upcharged half ramekin of sriracha dipping sauce. My group had to ask multiple times for a single round of drink refills. On the way out, I cleared room for the same cashier to come through the door with an armful of plates, and my effort was met with her awful glare. When your entire experience at a restaurant is sandwiched between poor encounters with such an outwardly miserable person, it becomes really difficult to recommend it. read more

My first trip in wasn't awesome, but my return was memorable. I opted this time for the cowgirl bowl, which was a cheesey grits bowl with slices of brisket on top. Absolutely some of the best grits I've had in the Triangle. A nice improvement over the last thing I'd ordered here. The table also got some of their wings, which were spectacular. First smoked, then fried, these were incredibly flavorful and stood out from most other spots. Will definitely be back before long! read more

A decent sandwich joint downtown. We tried their cod sandwich and an Angus burger. The cod sandwich was quite good, we liked the dill tartar sauce that accompanied it. The burger was of great quality and had a really good texture (it is an Angus steak, after all), but otherwise was quite bland. We also got a really decadent chocolate cake for dessert that was very good. They also have a really good malt+vanilla ice cream+ coffee milkshake. The rooftop dining was a neat touch. This would definitely be a good place to have a small bite and maybe read a book while enjoying the mild Fall weather. read more

I am excited to say that I finally made it to Grub last night for the first time! I was excited to see Gator bartending-I have gotten to know her from other bar tending jobs she has had here in Durham and she is always on point with her drinks and customer service skills! Gator suggested the Peruvian Sangria with pineapple piece on top when I took my seat at the bar and I wasn't super excited about it until she poured me a little sample. It was sooooo good, I have never had anything like it before! I ended up ordering 2 glasses of it and I'm very much looking forward to having it on future visits! My friend ordered a Long Island iced tea which I really enjoyed bc it had fruit juice instead of a mix-I found the sip I had to be very refreshing! So I gave the taco Tuesday a try and was shocked that 3 tacos were only $5! I opted for the variety-one pork, one fish, and one brisket taco! The pork was a little dry, the fish was decent but the brisket was hands down my favorite! The decor was super cute! It was pretty busy, with a great mix of people. I anticipate many trips back here! read more

Super cute renovation of an old gas station. Love the menu choices, and the cocktail selection (and full bar) were very nice. Nice, spacious rooftop bar, although there was no bar service at the time that I was there. Wait staff was quick and very attentive. The smells outside were amazing from the smoked meats that were cooking. I was just here for a pre-wedding drink, so I didn't get a chance to eat anything. However, all of the nearby plates looked super tasty. Definitely will be back in the future to try a meal! read more

My husband, my friend and I went for our first visit to Grub last night. The food was delicious, perfectly portioned, and reasonably priced. We were greeted warmly upon arrival, and treated very well by everyone we encountered. There is a variety of seating, we opted for the comfy booths at ground level, but there is a patio, and a rooftop area as well. I ordered the barracuda (cod sandwich) and the mud pie for dessert. My husband, and my friend both ordered burgers which were devoured. I definitely recommend this little gem to anybody visiting Durham in the mood for something decadent with a twist. read more

Went in on Saturday afternoon. Place was backed up to the door although the place was mostly empty. Problem turned out to be a hostile, inept cashier taking orders. She took forever taking any order -- and the menu isn't all that complicated. She was snippy and unhelpful and more interested in talking with the family sitting in a nearby booth, people she apparently knew. Seemed mad at me for ordering an item exactly as it was shown on the menu (half sandwich + sides), walked off while I was talking to go into the kitchen and throw up some sort of sign with her arms (looked like a big "W", though I won't speculate about what that means), and husband had to ask twice for glasses for our drinks. Meal was meh: My BLT had overcooked bacon and bland butterbean & corn salad, no dressing for the chips although cashier had made a big deal of us choosing some; husband's tomato soup was the best thing we had. I can get a BLT somewhere else without being treated badly. Restaurants should pay more attention to the customer's initial moments. That can make or break the experience. read more

Food wise this was amazing, full marks for food no doubt. We sat on the roof top and weather was cloudy so our group has nice time while chit chatting. It's behind the gas station, and there is not enough place for parking so it take us 10 to 15 minutes to find the parking. There was long queue to give your order and and they give you flag and this guys serve your food at your table. Place was very crowded and inside tables are occupied as well as counter is occupied so there was very little room for queue and server are going from one place to another ( it's little annoying for me ). I have some suggestions plz look your menu here on yelp and decide what do you want have and I think it's credit of the chef or food that restaurant is crowded. read more

I loved the appeal of this place from the time we pulled up and love the concept of a gas station converted into a diner. It has a super chill, hipster vibe with lots of bright colors. We went early on a Sunday morning (8ish) so we didn't have the trouble finding parking that other folks have had. The crowd did start to pick up while we were there though. At first I liked the fact that it was counter service (think, no tip), but when it came time to refill my coffee and the line at the register was to the door, I was wishing it was "full service" (no pun intended). I didn't end up getting a refill on my coffee for that reason. We sat at a booth but there is also an old fashioned type dining counter. I ordered the cowgirl bowl (Stoneground cheddar grits, scrambled eggs, BBQ beef brisket, black bean, salsa and Heirloom cherry tomatoes), which was delicious! The other people I was dining with both had the best bird chicken sandwich which they said they enjoyed but didn't rave about. The biscuit on my husband's sandwich completely crumbled apart as he was eating it. I would highly recommend giving this place a try, I know we'll be back. read more

I was really satisfied with my brunch experience at the grub! It's right by downtown Durham, so it's a convenient stop if you're making a day out of the area, but down a less commercial road so it doesn't feel like you're surrounded; it's more secluded. There's a downstairs eating area as well as an upstairs rooftop seating area and when I arrived for Saturday brunch it was fairly quiet and unpopulated, which I really enjoyed. Their grits bowl is so hearty and tasty, I loved my smoothie and my companion loved his mimosa and chicken biscuit sandwich. I will come again when I'm not looking to spend a lot, and I want to relax outside and enjoy a quiet brunch! read more

I go to this place usually twice a week. It never fails to impress with how local and high quality the food is. The buffalo chicken sandwich (special item not on menu) is perfectly breaded, drizzled honey, and has an unreal brioche bun to it. The rooftop with firefly lights is also a vibe. read more

Fun spot in Durham! The outside area is especially nice, so this place is great in warm weather. The sandwiches are really tasty, and I find the portions to be quite large for the price! I wouldn't say there is anything that totally blows me away on the menu, but Grub is a really solid, consistently good spot with options for everyone on the menu. read more

My girls and I went to brunch this past Sunday at Grub Durham and I really enjoyed my meal. Please be prepared to wait - pack your patience. We waited in line for about 40 minutes. I'm not a fan of southern food...little rich for my taste. With that being said, OMG...I would literally get SO fat if I lived in Durham...Best Bird Basket breakfast sandwich, I adore you. Crispy chicken, bacon, pickles and onions on a biscuit. I know, sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen. Well, if that's my fate, then so be it. Crispy, light chicken on a meaty bacon with sweet pickles on a flaky biscuit. Nothing was greasy about this sandwich....not too big, not too small, perfect start to a robust morning! The decor and the architecture was refreshing and the staff was super friendly. The restaurant tees were way in fashion. I grabbed one myself. Next time you need super power energy in Durham, check this place out. You won't regret it. read more

Excellent food! I'm still thinking about the "Barracuda" sandwich. The dish was crispy, seasoned perfection! My friends all had breakfast entrees and they all looked great. I didn't get to taste the pancake but it was the lightest and fluffiest I've ever seen. For Covid-19, Grub Durham is handling dine in very well for a small space. They're doing their best to maintain distance. Tables are spaced and the young lady taking the orders kept monitoring. All servers had masks. I'd go back. read more

Great evening with good friends at Grub. We had two fried chicken dishes, one Cubano burger and one Shark (fish sandwich), plus sides (the bean & corn salad is utterly fantastic). Established in 2017.

GRUB Durham opened in June of 2017 at the corner of West Chapel Hill and Gattis Streets in the historic West End neighborhood of Durham, NC. The restaurant was a full renovation project of an existing 1960's building that originally housed a PURE Oil Filling Station. The project revitalized the corner and added some 25+ jobs to the community.

Meet the Business Owner: Wendy W.

Wendy Woods, a Durham native and her partner Stacey Poston opened GRUB Durham with the intent of cultivating community in their West End neighborhood with good food, great outdoor spaces and a cool interior diner-style vibe. I had high hopes, but there is reason why fries made from fresh potatoes aren't widely offered at restaurants and it's mostly bc they have so much water content and easily come out soggy. And these came out exactly that way - soggy and limp. The chicken sandwich I ordered was a special, limited time offering, and it was also ok. It was advertised as having a slaw on top and that's a strong word for what was served. When I think slaw, I think robust, crunchy veggies with some vinegar bite and while I got a bit of that, it wasn't enough to balance out the fried, savoriness of the breaded chicken patty and bbq sauce. Service was friendly, but I wouldn't say they went above and beyond. I was eating alone at the bar, and I'm usually accustomed to more touch points than I got here, but it wasn't bad. I they checked in more, I may have felt more comfortable bringing up my dissatisfaction with the fries. Beer selection (on tap) was only ok. Definitely a personal preference but I wouldn't say say they had a wide variety of beer styles to select from - at least while I was there. Giving two stars bc I won't come back here on purpose - especially by myself.

Yum! My boyfriend and I split some dishes at the Federal and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. They were crisp on the outside without being overcooked, and the mint, peanuts, and pickled onions added both texture and freshness. It was also a large enough portion for leftovers. The Shrimp Dumplings were excellent. The flavor was outstanding, and the Thai chili oil, garlic, scallions, and sesame worked beautifully together. My only criticism was the portion size. The accompanying rice was simply prepared and didn't add much to the dish. The flavors were enjoyable, although slightly sweeter than my wife prefers. Service Service was excellent. Our server took the time to walk us through each dish, explaining ingredients, spice levels, and preparation so we could choose items that fit our tastes. We especially appreciated her knowledge of the menu and her attentiveness throughout the meal, my iced tea was never empty. Overall Juju offers an attractive setting, excellent service, and several very well-executed dishes. Our biggest challenge was simply that much of the lunch menu leans toward spicier offerings than we typically enjoy. While we probably wouldn't return specifically for lunch, the dinner menu appears to offer a much wider variety of choices that fit our tastes. We'll likely be back to give dinner a try.

During the height of the pandemic, they offered free bagged lunch to anyone who needed one. They also were (are?) part of the pilot project for Durham's guaranteed income. It looks to me that the owners/company are concerned about being good citizens of the community and that's a great thing. These days, so many companies get bought out by private equity companies. I hope this bakery continues to be locally owned and operated! (Also, generally this bakery isn't offering the very fancy European/European-ish style pastries which is fine by me. The prices are very reasonable, possibly in part because they aren't trying to make their baked goods a "high end" item. There are other good local bakeries that offer "high end" pastries, but they are also much less affordable and for my taste, too rich.)

I was the only customer at the bar. The 2 older women gave me no attention at all. Hey, guess I'll go across the street and grab a 6 pack at the Coop. I hate it when people on yelp say that they're in the service industry so they know what they're talking about, BUT... I am. Your customer is drinking and their glass is empty. Started a timer when I finished and it's been 11 minutes. Again, I hate customers who write reviews like this, but here I am. Please just care about your job a tiny bit.
