Loved this place. Unique, creative, casual atmosphere, converted from an old service station. Amazing biscuits. Sweet potatoes biscuits are a must-try! I had the Best Bird Biscuit. Delicious. Very dog friendly! Owner and staff went out of their way to make our visit a special one. Lots' of outdoor seating for COVID safety. Also, authentic very good sweet tea. The atmosphere and food were great. However, the eco-conscious side of me was cringing. Two of us were given metal utensils and the other 4 were given the individual plastic bags with plastic utensils. They also only served water via disposable plastic bottles. I really enjoyed our first visit to Grub Durham! Why have I waited so long to try this place?!? A friend and I split the Veggie Hash Plate and the Greek Cous Cous Salad. Both were excellent. I especially enjoyed the salad. Light and refreshing, the dressing was delicious. A child in our party got the Mac Bowl which I obviously had to try a bite of. It was EXCELLENT! Fun setting for a restaurant! Plenty of seating indoors or outdoors. I believe they even have upstairs seating. My friend and I came here for brunch. I had the Country Road that consisted of roasted ham, a fried egg, sharp cheddar cheese, and mustard on a sweet potato biscuit. Honestly, I probably wouldn't recommend getting this if you're really hungry. It's more a snack than a meal since it was much smaller than expected, but still tasty for the few bites it lasted. The Greena Colada smoothie was pretty satisfactory - not too sweet like some smoothies tend to be. My friend got one of the breakfast bowls, which was much more filling. I had some of hers, but it was a little too salty for my liking. Overall, I thought Grub Durham was okay. I thought the price of my biscuit ($5.29) was a little too expensive for such a small portion size. If you're coming on a busy day, parking is also super inconvenient so keep that in mind as well. Don't know if there's anything that special on the menu to get me to return, but I would not be opposed to coming back so take that for what it's worth. read more

Good, hip, tasty meal. I had the pastrami sandwich, which was pretty good, though unconventional, with thick pieces of house-made brisket pastrami and sweet and sour beet relish. The slaw side was ok. I also had a side of cheesy grits, which was very good. I also had a some of my daughter's pancakes, which were thicky and fluffy. I thought they were fine but had hoped for more of a buttermilk tang. Good place to grab brunch; I was there on a Friday, so it wasn't busy. Visited for the first time on a Sunday around brunch time and the place was PACKED and the wait was in excess of 20 minutes and the food was DEFINITELY WORTH THE WAIT. Nothing complicated, a simple breakfast platter, but it was very tasty, well made, and presented in a professional manner. When I am in the area again I plan to try the Grub at a less busy time. One caveat: If you do happen to visit while they are busy, be prepared for parking issues, as the demand for the great food and service exceeds the available parking. There is a another business across the small side street from the Grub with more than ample parking but be prepared to have your car towed as parking is only for the two businesses located at that location, Da Kine's Kava and a yogurt shop, both of which are very good. My suggestion is to get a dessert or accompanying stress relieving drink from one of these two establishments to take advantage of the close parking. read more

I was really excited about trying this place. I ordered the brisket sandwich. When it came the bread was not what was listed on the menu. It was supposed to be a toasted brioche bun, but it was, I believe, marble rye bread, not toasted. I don't like marble rye bread so I just ate the contents. My friend was supposed to have ciabatta bread for her sandwich but received the same kind of bread that I did. If your menu is not up to date with what you are serving, then let a person know when ordering what the change is to the food vs. what you are advertising. read more

Came for brunch. I knew that the parking and line were going to be issues as I'd read some reviews before I got there. Luckily parking was fine on the weekend as I just parked across the street in the parking lot of one of the businesses. But the line was a disaster. It was out the door (which is fine, we don't mind waiting in line). But then the server came out and told us to turn the line so that it stayed indoors. Also fine, so we moved inside. But then new people joined the line and it extended it out the door. This is sometimes fine if everybody is playing nicely. But then a minor super passive aggressive scuffle happened in front of us with one of these "we were here first" fights. This also might have been fine -- it's nothing against the establishment -- the issue was with how Grub dealt with it. They didn't. There was one person at the register who was taking orders and filling up any coffees that were ordered. Have two people do this! I understand no second register if you rarely need it. But for goodness sake get some help back there. Meanwhile, more people were getting confused in the line. As now there was the main line immediately in front of the register and then two parts of the fork each with a dozen people and no idea about who was there first. My partner and I watched with bemusement for about five minutes and then just left. I might go back during off hours when there won't be a line as the menu did look awesome. But if these problems aren't fixed it's gong to be an issue going forward I imagine. read more

This review is based on attitude and bad service, not food because we actually did not eat here. This place really wasn't on our radar, mostly bc my gf is a vegan. Then they popped up as being one of the restaurants that was participating in the April vegan challenge. So we went this Tuesday. We got there at 4, which is when they are suppose to start serving tacos, for taco tuesday, and the vegan toastda. My gf ordered the toastda. The lady immediately scarfed at us and said "oh you're one of those people, I'll have to check." Comes back and says they're not ready, they're still preparing. I asked if they were doing tacos tonight because the menu says it starts at 4. She looked at me and said "I already told you they're not ready yet, it starts after 4 sometimes later". Then rudely asked if we were going to order anything. We left instead. First off, if you're preprinted menu has a time you should be prepared to start serving at that time. Second, learn some manners and some customer service skills. Third, the vegan challenge is suppose to bring more/nrmew customers so maybe you shouldn't refer to them as "one of those people". read more

Food = 5 stars! Especially the Cuban burger. When that was served everyone else at the table looked at it like 'wow we should have ordered THAT!' The building is a gas station turned restaurant with a cute, hip vibe and a really, really comfortable and sunny rooftop. Service concept = 2 stars. You place your order at the register downstairs and are given a little placard with a quirky name on it. Then, you're free to sit where you like while the wait staff wander around all the seating zones to find you and deliver your food--one armful at a time! On a busy Sunday brunch it makes no sense that waiters wander around through the four or five different seating zones looking for the matching name on the table... One of the seating areas is on the roof! As a result, we waited for 30 minutes without coffee, water, or food while servers wandered around (holding one or two plates at a time, getting cold) looking for the correct party out of like 30 full tables..... When they found us on the rooftop seating area, it took 3 trips up and down the tall flight of stairs to bring the three of us our coffee, water, and plates. As a result we all got served at different times by a visibly out of breath middle aged cashier who was clearly pulling double duty as a server because it was so busy. Grub is an awesome eatery! It Use to be an old gas station and the owners turned it into a crafty bar. There is an upstairs out mdoor patio and a downstairs outdoor patio with an inside fully loaded bar. The location is LGBTQ friendly and the staff is amazing! I got the BLT with broccoli soup and sweet potato fries. The price is very affordable for what you can get. I highly recommend you check out the night scene as it seems you can have a wonderful time out with friends. read more

Pleasantly surprised! The food was great I would come back over and over. You order from a counter, you're given a "name" and the order is brought to you. They have a pretty extensive brunch/lunch menu. As well as some pretty nice libations. The margarita was spot on! I ordered the chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries! Wow. Simple but GOOD. My friends ordered the burger, it was massive! She throughly enjoyed everything about it. There's plenty out door seating, the staff is friendly and the food is good. Great burgers and sandwiches. I had the Cubano burger. Very flavorful and made with quality ingredients. The chicken salad sandwich was very good as well. I could taste a little rosemary in there. The small touches is what sets places like this apart from the ordinary. My only complaint was the time. Stand in line to order which was about 10 minutes and then over a half hour for the order to come out. They were busy but not packed. The staff is very friendly. Grub Durham was no exception, in that the food and atmosphere were very fun. My Best Bird Biscuit was delicious--light fluffy biscuit, crispy, tender, well seasoned chicken. The seating is open, and you place your order at the counter and they bring your meal to you. It can be a little hard to get stuff like refills on drinks or ketchup, or what have you, since strictly speaking, it isn't table service like in a typical restaurant. Ahh so good!! As soon as I finished my meal, I was plotting the next time I could come back here! I've been really wanted to go here for months, and just never got around to it, so we went here for a casual and awesome birthday dinner! Looking at the menu beforehand, I already had an idea of what I was planning on ordering, but upon arrival, and the chance to see the specials menu, my whole plan got thrown out the window and I'm ok with that! I got the vegan tostadas and we split the corn fritters off the special menu along with a yummy ginger cider that was on tap. Everything was delicious and exceeded my expectations. I love the atmosphere here, the vibe is really chill and the decor is really cool, the little logo chicken guys are just adorable! We've heard great things about Grub since they opened so hit them up later Thursday night. Love that they close at 9-there's a surprisingly short list of places that are open late on a weeknight. Grub's menu is HUGE-a full long menu and a list of specials. It was really difficult to narrow down the choices! We went with the burger (add pickles always) and sweet potato fries, which are made in house, which is key. The wings were also really yummy-flavorful and not dry, with a Gorgonzola sauce. The pork sandwich was nice and the bean salad was s cool side. Prices were reasonable and they had a pretty decent beer list. Will definitely come back for brunch bc that chicken biscuit is calling our names. read more

It was sunny, 70 degrees with a cool breeze. First time and we asked the host to make a recommendation. So Cubano Burger with sweet potato fries it was. Honestly, I was disappointed in the sweet potato fries. I felt like I make a more flavorful and crisp fry at home then this. The burger was loaded and it was average as far as explosion of flavor. As another poster mentioned, you order your food and drinks up front. They give you a flag and your drinks to find your own spot. There was an enclosed outside area. However with the sun we definitely went with the upstairs. It had both large and small party tables. Areas were covered and uncovered. They brought our food up and then went back downstairs. This place caught my eye as I was driving back from a work site today, starving, I needed food and fast. I instantly felt that I needed to give my support as I saw that both a rainbow and a transgender flag were swaying in the breeze. Be warned: parking is a complete nightmare though. The layout of the lot IMO, is not the greatest and the surrounding streets are no parking. It took me 2 u-turns and parking illegally to dine here. I almost gave up but improvised to make it work. The ambiance is casual and lively with a diverse mix of people dining. The restaurant is clean and the roof deck looks pretty sweet, though I did not check it out on this visit. Unfortunately, as soon as I was served my food I had instant regret. I ordered a biscuit sandwich with egg and bacon. The biscuit was dry and very thick. As a result, my sandwich was impossible to bite into, the situation made worse by the fact that the biscuit crumbled with every bite, requiring me to eat it with a fork and knife. I had to completely ditch the top of my biscuit and go with an open faced style because the biscuit was so dry and crumbly, not to mention tasteless. Determined to find a redeeming factor in my meal I pushed on but I couldn't help the growing feeling of disappointment and anger welling up with each bite I took. For one thing, I had the saddest portion of bacon I've ever seen. I think it must have been one slice torn in two small, sad pieces. The other thing that irked me was the flavor profile-- sweet. A sweet egg and bacon breakfast sandwich... Why Grub, why?!?! I simply don't get why food is so darn sweet these days. And Grub's menu is pretty representative of that trend. "Honey mustard," "maple flavor," "bread and butter pickles," etc. dot across the entire menu. Two out of maybe five sandwiches on the menu are dressed with various iterations of cranberry. Even the biscuit from my sandwich seemed to be sweetened. My lunch should not taste like dessert! I really, really wanted to like this place. I liked that they offered a range of vegetarian options and seemed to be able to cater to many dietary restrictions. I also like that the food was very affordable. The location was well decorated and felt sunny, welcoming and causal. Basically, everything was great except the actual food. I don't normally find myself feeling irrationally angry about food, but Grub definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. It's a cute spot and I love how inclusive it is. Even with extra grace due to understandable COVID limitations, staff shortages, etc, it is terrible. We love the food and drinks (their margs are fantastic), but every time we go it is a hot mess. And what kind of restaurant opens only from 5-7pm in the evening (even on the weekends)?! We went for dinner last night and arrived at 7 (understandably not expecting this to be closing time). We were told if we could order IMMEDIATELY then we could have food. We ordered burgers and the staff person said "I hope you don't want them well done!" Despite their extreme hurry to get our order in, we waited almost 45 minutes for our food. The menu was smaller than I expected (no sides advertised, really) and my biscuit was a bit heavy on the maple syrup. I got the chicken biscuit and the chicken was good but the piece of chicken was small & thin so I left still hungry. Also, although I appreciate maple syrup on a biscuit, it was so much syrup that the biscuit was almost soggy. the biscuit would have been a lot better with a quarter to half of the maple syrup. My partner got the sausage egg & cheese biscuit and while the biscuit was good, the sausage is really heavy on the fennel & it overpowered everything else. Food is decent but you need to improve your service. Order online and waited for more than 1:30 hours for an order that I had to cancel and leave. The estimated time was 40 mins. While I go here all the time. I was very disappointed to see that my friend was almost given pork to eat. While I understand mistakes can be made I was not upset about that what upset me was when we went down to fix the item they told us they made a whole new plate but when we got our plate back we saw that the remains of the accidental sweet potato fries and the removed cheese was apparent and obvious that it wasn't changed but only had the bacon removed this was not at all respectful to my friends religious beliefs read more
