Stumbled upon this place after work and I'm glad I did. I love little mom and pop shops. I was on a quick break so I didn't browse the menu but I ordered what was written on the chalk board outside. I got the ribeye sandwich. It was not what I expected I was expecting a thicker cut of meat but it still was tasty.' They served it with a special Smokey rib sauce that was a cross Of n auju. Stop by the out of the way sandwich shop, which is really not as well kept a secret as I thought since the people coming and going was pretty steady. We got 3 different sandwiches, and all were very good. Bread was fresh, meat was plentiful and the toppings were just enough. Their selection of sodas and the " root beer poll" was surprisingly wide. We took our food to go and that gave us a few minutes to look at all the quaint things that adorn the shop. But space is limited even if you did want to eat in. My mom kept raving about this spot for sandwiches, and it was so cute! The sign outside says that this spot has been there since the 70's and you can feel the nostalgia in the space with vintage collectibles lining the walls and shelves and photos of family, friends, and customers. I love places like these because they make me feel a real piece of local neighborhood history. Now let's talk about the sandwich- I ordered the vegetarian deluxe which comes with hummus avocado lettuce tomato onion olives and vinaigrette, oh yeah, and cheese, but to veganize it I ordered it without the cheese. You're able to pick the type of bread you'd like, but during the inner mental chaos of decision-making and ordering, I missed that point and by default got the white bread. No complaints though, it was soft and fluffy. I got the whole sub-size and ended up spreading the two halves over two meals. Really weird experience that has me confused and honestly uninterested in ever recommending this spot or coming back. I was excited to try this place and really don't understand how you managed to butcher my experience. Cluttered shop that's a little hectic is usually a sign for a great experience and great food. I asked a few questions and the cashier answered quickly. I then ordered 2 sandwiches. The second sandwich was supposed to be the Turkey Bacon Avocado with no bacon (my finance doesn't eat pork) with everything on it except Mustard. The cashier rings me up and I paid not even think twice about. The cashier then goes to talk to the worker in the back who's making sandwiches about my order. The worker in the back seems confused about my turkey sandwich and the cashier is trying to assure them it's right. I don't get a receipt or any acknowledgment that I'm good to go. Time goes by and I start trying to figure out how my food came out to be $2-$3 more than I expected. I have another interaction with the cashier about the sandwich and she tells me sorry for the confusion and I ask to take a water to make up the difference (I don't care about a few dollars) When my food is ready the cashier then tells me I owe for a water which now makes me confused. A manager or maybe the owner comes up and begins to tell me how the sandwich I ordered can't be customized (despite the number of questions they ask you customizing each sandwich i.e. Mayo mustard veggies) which is not what was explained to me by the cashier. He then doubles down that I was in fact wrong and needed to pay for the water and the added Avacado to a turkey sandwich. So instead of being transparent and upfront with a new customer I'm being wrangled into spending an extra $2.50 on something that came with the sandwich I ordered and an extra $2 for a bottle of water I wasn't even looking to purchase to begin with. If I wanted to be a jerk I could have pointed out the numerous issues with the interaction and not paid extra for what I was told was being given to me to make up for the mistake but I instead chose to pay and leave. The food is decent but definitely not worth a headache like this one. I asked for mayo no mustard got none of either. Asked for cheddar cheese not provolone got provolone. I'm not sure why I was charged for extra cheese on my cheese sandwich when I only asked if I could have cheddar and Swiss cheese on my cheese sandwich. There is only one single layer of cheddar and one single layer of Swiss. I'm thinking is that all the cheese I get on a cheese sandwich? One single layer of cheese? For $9? And then a $2 up charge to add Swiss? I mean I actually meant to mix the cheese with cheddar and Swiss - not to actually add more but I guess when you only have one single layer of cheese then I guess it doesn't make sense to mix it up. So- my cheese sandwich with no mustard or mayo or oil and vinegar - was $9 and then $11 with the "extra" cheese and my bf's all beef combo sandwich with a layer of meatballs, a layer of roast beef AND a layer of beef salami was $10. His sandwich loaded with several varieties of meat and ALL the fixin's including mayo, mustard, oil and vinegar was less dollars then my simple and basic cheese sandwich. I'm a little stunned that they felt the need to charge an extra $2 to add TWO cheeses on my cheese sandwich that was originally $9 when my bf's sandwich had THREE separate meats PLUS a layer of cheese for $10. That means I paid $1 for each slice of extra cheese. It's really not about the money- it's the point. I'm just so tired of the greed. I even tipped $4 on a sale that didn't involve any service except for the making of a sandwich- the job. The card reader had a tip already highlighted which was a 15% tip at a little under $6 when the sale was on 2 bottled sodas that I pulled from the fridge and two containers of salads that I pulled from the fridge. I felt a little intimidated as I chose a "custom" tip at $4 because the older man at the register didn't seem like he wanted to be there at all. I couldn't find the bottle top remover for my Coca Cola and he just seemed like he thought I was incompetent- I can't prove what he thought of me of course but id think you'd make an effort to be friendly if you'd like a repeat customer. This is only the second time I've been to Grove Grinder. I actually went out of my way to give a second chance. The first time I bought sandwiches from here I also ordered a cheese sandwich without any custom ordering so I received mayo, mustard and vinegar and oil and when I went to eat my sandwich it was a huge blob of soggy bread and veggies that all got pushed out of my sandwich cuz it was so soggy and wet. This is why I ordered my sandwich dry- with oil and vinegar on the side in little cups with lids which the cashier did actually make an effort to send with me the second time I ordered after I asked if I could get them on the side because I do love the tang of oil and vinegar on a sandwich! My bf on the other hand, loved the sandwiches he received both times! And the potato salad is the best I've ever had besides my own! I hate to make potato salad because it's such a process but I would definitely come to the Grove Grinder to get potato salad if I don't want to make. It's just like homemade.
