I've eaten at BMH for 15 years and they've always been consistent with quality and fresh ingredients. I'd say this is one of the best sandwich shops in San Diego - the bread is the best, always freshly baked and fluffy. The main event is the balsamic dressing sauce that comes with the subs, literally could drink this! The owners and people working here are always so nice and friendly. If you haven't tried BMH, get here ASAP!

Food : Quality of ingredients were great, but the portions are very low. The bread was thicker than the deli meats and veggies. Every bite was only bread. I was pretty upset because this place had the best reviews. Maybe I just need to try another sandwich? Service: The service was great and everyone was very friendly. The lady in the front was very patient and gave a lot of options. Ambiance: Classic deli vibe and hole in the wall. Everything was clean and neat.

Not much to look at, but oh so good to eat. This is a place yould just drive by. That would be a mistake. We had the meatball sandwich and the SoHo and wow. How they get so much flavor into these things is a mystery. 100% hone run. A simple place with massive flavor.

Chefs Kiss! The torpedo is made to perfection, great size sandwiches. Staff is friendly! Made my entire day!!!

The woman working here is so friendly and sweet. She spoke to us like we were family. Makes me happy and smile when I see her! We ordered three sandwiches. They are so massive and long. It's as long as finger tips to my elbow. I think we will have left over to bring home and enjoy the next day. It comes with mamas love juice, which I hope they would do bigger containers of for to go in the future. Small shop with minimal seating but it's more of a grab and go place. We are bringing ours to the beach! Got two bags of chips with our sandwiches it came out to be around $36 I believe. Then we ordered one of the San Pellegrino Lemonata and that was ~$3. Sandwiches ordered, lots of bread & nice and soft- all sandwiches come with mayo, mustard, lettuce, thinly sliced onions, and tomatoes. You can specify if you want everything or what you don't want added. - SoHo: Turkey, genoa salami, swiss cheese, tomato & Dijon mustard. This sandwich is delicious with the thinly sliced onions. I liked that they used dijon mustard specifically for this! The Genoa salami was so tasty. - BMH: Capicola, ham, and provolone cheese. This is a basic (aka classic) sandwich for those that don't want to adventure too far from a ham sandwich lunch. It came with an abundance of lettuce. Tastes so good with the mamas love juice dressing! - Southside: Ham, Cotto & Genoa Salami, capicola, Provolone w/ the choice of mild or hot giardiniera. I ordered to have mine with mild giardiniera-- this is an Italian relish! Wish there was more of this throughout the sandwich. I like the array of different cold meats in this sandwich, I always learn about a new meat while ordering here. Got salt and vinegar chips, they tasted great. And also sour cream and onion chips which was also good, but not my preference with sandwiches. The San Pellegrino Lemon flavor drink was super refreshing and fizzy.

Wonderful hidden gem in La Mesa. On this particular day, I was craving a sandwich and decided to google places and landed on this one. I'm so glad I did. I ordered the Tuscany with just mortadella. Huge sandwich with all the fixings and a great Italian dressing on the side to add. Staff is so friendly and the owner is extremely charming and wants his customers to be happy, that's hard to find these days. This is a hole in the wall establishment and they serve dinner and to go premade items. I wish I had decided on eating a cannoli but I was too full to even consider it. This place is a must try if you're in the area.

    The Betsy

BMH Italian Deli is everything you want in a local, family-owned spot--warm, welcoming, and serving up absolute perfection between two slices of bread. I had The Betsy, and let me tell you, it was hands down the best sandwich I've ever had. The bread was soft and fluffy, the ingredients were incredibly fresh, and the portion was huge--no skimping here! If I could change one thing (and this is just personal preference), I'd add some peperoncini to kick up the heat a little. But even without it, this sandwich was flawless. You can tell the people here care about quality, and that makes all the difference. Support this gem of a deli--you won't regret it!

The best bread you'll ever have. Fresh bread gets made here every morning. Came here with my buddy and we each got sandwiches and a pasta. I got the caprease sandwich and it was delicious. Didn't think it was going to be good bc it only came with pesto, mozerllacheese, and tomato and dressing. It was AMAZING !!!! Gave half to my buddy and he enjoyed it. I got the chicken Parmesan Alfredo pasta and it so delicious & creamy. My buddy got the Baja spicy and I had half of it ! It was super flavor, a must try if you like turkey. My buddy also got the beef ravioli and he loved it. Can't wait to come back.

    Meatball sub
    Melissa R.

It was my first time being to BMH Italian. My husband has been there before, so he recommended we go there to grab sandwiches for dinner. I ordered a torpedo sandwich with no onions, and my husband ordered a meatball sub. We both got a cannot also. There was a nice lady who greeted us,I believe her name was Tina. She took our order and she also made our sandwiches too. The shop is going through a renovation and now has a new owner than previously. They did buy the family's recipes and kept the name. The price was great and the food was delicious. The only thing I would say is that once I got home, I realized they left the onions on my sandwich when I asked for no onions. We would definitely come there again.

The place was perfectly clean. Menu: there's a lot going on there. If you tend to get visually overwhelmed, maybe look up the menu before coming in. This is why I got a salad to begin with. Two stars because I didn't really get what I paid for, the chicken.

When you see the entire store front packed with City Workers enjoying their meals...IT'S A MUST TO STOP AND TRY THEIR FOOD! That speaks volume in itself! I just love "MOM AND POP" locations! I believe this shop is a mother and son ran operation and they are an amazing duo dishing out amazing subs for reasonable prices! Watch out other sandwich chains out there cause Grove Grinder IS WHERE IT'S AT!!!! They have been in business since 1972...NUFF SAID! I ordered the Ann Special with everything on it. They do not skimp on meat and the proportion of bread to meat to veggie ratio is spot on! A full size sandwich is enough to feed two people easily or one very hungry person. I did not try any of their side items or large selection of root beer drink options to choose from but, I will be back many more times to try all they offer! I'm a little heartbroken about this because I had a 5-star review drafted up for this place that…read moreread: "Grove Grinder is the GOAT of neighborhood sandwich shops. Over the years that I've been coming here, I've been pleasantly surprised to find that the quality, portion size, and price point has kept pace with inflation and remains the best sandwich option in East County." I'm certainly not the longest-running customer of this spot, but I have been coming to Grove Grinder ever since I moved to the area four years ago. I kept coming back, wrote rave reviews in San Diego food-related social media groups and threads, bugged food influencers about them, and sent many of my friends and family their direction because I was that big of a fan. My husband and I have taken these sandwiches on roadtrips and plane rides, grabbed them in the middle of household chores, and picked them up for each other when the other is too tired or sick to cook. The reason why I'm ultimately knocking this review back and heavily questioning whether I should return has to do with a disappointing experience from my last visit with my husband that we now think was part of a larger pattern. The past couple of times we saw this person at the register, we used my name for the order. This time, though, my husband gave his name instead and the person at the register gave him some attitude about it and asked "You're *really* going with that?" I don't understand what their problem was with his name, but both the person in the front and the staff in the back refused to use it. They called out everyone else's names (and they usually call out mine when I order) and we noticed that our sandwiches were looking skimpy compared to how stacked we know they can come. My husband uses a nickname that might not be the name he was given at birth, but is a name he has used for over 20 years and might as well be his "real," name. We don't want to make assumptions, but most of the staff has always been at least a little cold towards us at best, slightly rude at worst, and even though this experience might seem relatively small to some, it's ultimately the straw that broke the camel's back. We suspect that their distaste for us might be politically motivated. We know it can't be personal because we've been nothing but polite. It sucks, but it seems to be that if they perceive you to not be "their people," your money isn't as green at their establishment, even if it spends all the same. I loved this place and felt lucky that they're close to my house, but feeling disrespected and like the staff are trying to fire us as customers is enough motivation to take our business elsewhere.
