This is an okay place. I ordered the grilled eggplant sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries and here's what i thought: - The fries were really burnt - The eggplant was super oily - They served it with smoked gouda instead of mozzarella without giving me a heads up (and it wasn't the greatest cheese pairing) and - The sandwich had an overwhelming amount of pesto on it. The pesto would leak out in clumps becoming a really messy ordeal. Not a fan. read more

I'll start this review by saying my wife and I know nothing about murphys and only ate here based on a locals recommendation. This place is amazing. The food is incredible the coffee is good but what pressed me most was the service. I had the breakfast burrito. It's very big and very appetizing. Very good flavors and better than your average breakfast burrito. It's also was the local recommend. My wife had the chicken omelette thing. She loved this. It was big enough that she couldn't finish it. But she couldn't stop eating the hash browns it came with and finished them off. I tried her omelette and I have to say I think it's better than the burrito. The coffee is hot a really good. But the best part is the service. You are waited on like no place else. It's not a place where your one waitress tends to you. At this place every waitress tends to you. When your coffee is low any waitress waking by stops to check. Every waitress in there checked on us. At no time where we ever in need of anything. It was incredible. Makes you feel like your the only customer but they were actually pretty busy. I'd give them 20 stars for service if I could. Here's my only complaint if I had one. They have outside Paris seating but it's shared with another little diner in the same patio. The problem is the only way you can tell what table belongs to what diner is a different colored placemat but your not told this at all. I'm guessing the locals just know this. We sat at the wrong table and the employee seemed highly annoyed when we wanted to move to the other restaurant. I suggest they put a menu or table topper indicating who's restaurant table your sitting at. But this place is incredible and we will definitely be back. read more

Well... Post Thanksgiving day. We wanted to take sister in-law out for dinner after putting together a wonderful family get together. Headed into Murphy's and decided on Grounds restaurant. Ordered the special of the day Prime rib. When served we noticed the sauce and our prime rib was ice cold. My Fiance happened to cut hers in half checking the center and was also cold. After sending our plates back instead of remaking our dinners. They just replated the same prime ribs on new plates and re-sauced the prime ribs!!! My Sister in-law actually got my fiance's prime rib that was cut in half!! Unbelievable and never had this happen at a restaurant.. read more

I came here during one of the funnest/most relaxing/all around awesome vacations/trips I've ever gone on. Strolled in at the last minute to catch a very calming---even retrospective---breakfast. They have a really nice outside patio which was the perfect pair of crisp breakfast morning air to go with my herbal tea and strawberry waffle. The waffle was a bit pricey for its size, but my companions breakfast (Mexican omelet) was huge for its price, so it kinda evened out. They don't do dinner ever night, but the venue is much more for breakfast, in my opinion. Light, airy, and fresh. read more

I really wanted to like this place nice bar and outdoor seating. But the people were unfriendly and downright rude to us. When it came to the check they never came back instead we had to go to the register to pay and when we got there the woman at the counter seemed upset that we were taking her away from another conversation that she was having with a co-worker. The food was sub-par, the potato pancake is just fried potatoes nothing special and nothing like a pancake at all. This place left the taste of disappointment in my mouth. :-( read more

We made a reservation here for a nice, intimate dinner to celebrate our anniversary. Didn't work out that way. The restaurant is crowded. There was barely enough room to move between our table and the ones on either side of us. Zero ability to have any kind of intimate conversation. The group of 6 to my left argued all evening about religion, God, prayer, and cancer. Not only could we not have any kind of intimate conversation, we could barely have any conversation at all. I asked to be moved but they said there were no other tables available, despite the fact that I could see 3 tables that were empty the entire time we were there. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. I didn't even finish my entree. We would have stayed, ordered dessert and coffee, maybe another glass of wine. But we couldn't get out of there fast enough. The food was good. The experience was a big disappointment. Probably would not recommend to friends. read more

With a warm and welcoming atmosphere, great staff, and really tasty food, Grounds is one of my new favorite places to go when in Murphys. Their portions are plentiful and offer all the trimmings you can ask for. Every dish that we ordered came to us nice and hot and delicious. This place is good for couple or small groups. This place is great for breakfast -- no joke. We came tonight for dinner. They advertised a hot carribean ceviche with corvina, bay shrimp, avocado, lemon, baby kale, and peppers. Silly me, I assumed "hot" in this context meant spicy. Nope! It was piping hot in a soup bowl with coconut curry broth. Inexplicably, it was served with mushy sweet potato fries swimming at the bottom of the broth. Epic fail! The good news: Hubby's burger was tasty snd cooked to order--a true medium rare. Breakfast is solid and has a good atmosphere to go along with it. I ordered the herb-gouda omelet, which was kinda lacking in the gouda department, but overall it was a tasty dish with the potato pancake. Also was able to try the basil scramble thingy, which also didnt have enough cheese nor enough basil. However, my favorite part about the dish was that it didnt weigh me down the rest of the day. (probably due to the lack of cheese looking back on it) Usually when I go out to eat breakfast, I get really bloated and the day turns into a netlixathon. At grounds, I was able to eat a nice breakfast and get on with my day! Service was ok... the ladies were always available, but somehow got the details wrong. The food wasn't that good, it was overcooked. And the service was horrible they almost gave our drink away to someone else. The room was very noisy and the service was sloppy. Salmon was fishy and overcooked, also the risotto over done. For the price you would expect better quality. read more

For lunch, I had a Greek sandwich which came with chips & salsa. Delish! I especially liked the flavor of the salsa for some reason. Great ambience and service. Closed between breakfast and lunch hours. No worries, they let my boy & me sit at the bar sipping on coffee & latte. read more

Amazing dinner experience with great local wines, delicious food, and fun conversation with the tables next to us. My wife ordered the Pork Tenderloin and I asked our server to surprise me with her favorite (she chose the excellent Seafood Cioppino). My wife's pork tenderloin bites were scrumtrelescent (yes, I snuck a few bites). My cioppino was DYNOMITE! Seafood was excellent (particularly the shrimp) and the tomato base was absolutely perfect. We rounded off the meal with their cheesecake dessert - the name escapes me - but the bright lemon flavored do not. Also, homemade whip cream FTW! 2 entrees, 2 glasses of local wine, and a dessert all for $78 - Date night complete - +100 husband points :-) read more

What a fantastic breakfast!! Perfection from the coffee (not too strong/not too weak) to the toast (real sourdough cut from the bakery loaf, not regular store bought sliced bread). My omelet tasted very fresh needing no added salt thanks to the smoked gouda, mushrooms, zucchini and avocado which pared nicely with their 'world famous' potato pancake. The husband ordered the short stack french toast, again made with sliced sourdough, which was glorious! A side of scrambled eggs and bacon and we were extremely well-fed. The restaurant is comfortable yet modern with a beautiful courtyard. Don't miss the spot if you're anywhere near-by. I only wish we were staying longer so we could go back for appetizers and cocktails, which all sounded fantastic. read more

Maybe it was because we had been hiking all day and we were starving by the time we ate dinner, but we thought the food was some of the best we've eaten in a long time. I ordered the grilled salmon. It tasted fresh and perfectly cooked. It came with asparagus, which was also perfectly cooked and some yummy rice. The bread served with dinner was fresh out of the oven and very good. My husband ordered the halibut special and he was still raving about how good it tasted a day later. We ate early, so it wasn't crowded. I did notice the tables inside are quite close together, so that may be a drawback if you eat here during peak hours. The bathrooms were clean. The servers were attentive and friendly. All in all, very good! One gripe I have about this restaurant and all the others in historic Murphy's - no one serves food between 4-5pm. So, plan ahead.... read more

I was dreaming of my braised chicken omelet this morning. I should have let my dream remain a dream... The chicken tasted old. The shredded smoked gouda cheese was unevenly applied and a few big clumps. The home fries, what? Over-seasoned. Coffee. Was that coffee? I had to order an espresso drink to make up for the lack of coffee. The food was mediocre, which was sad because Grounds used to produce consistently quality food. Only three stars, not because of the food, but because we were rushed in and out so quickly we didn't get to sit and enjoy. First, we ordered the bruschetta appetizer which was excellent. Beware! It's a lot of food and really too much for two people. For dinner I had the filet mignon and my husband had the stuffed pork chop. The filet was an excellent cut of meat and it was really tender. What it lacked was seasoning which I found disappointing. My husband enjoyed his pork chop which was stuffed with dressing. He said it was very flavorful. Back to the 'being rushed'. We were still eating our appetizer when they brought out the entrees. What to do? Let our food get cold? So we abandoned the bruschetta and dug in. We'd barely finished dinner when asked if we'd like dessert. Answer was no, although I would have loved our server to check in again as we would have liked some coffee. But no. As soon as we declined dessert someone delivered our check, Oddly, it didn't seem to be an issue of needing the table; as we were leaving there was plenty of seating available. We love Murphys, and we just came back Monday after spending the weekend there. We tried The Grounds for dinner, and were completely disappointed. I don't get it. Folks seem to like it. We must have bad luck. With reservations, and still told we have to wait for about a half hour. Can't believe I was talked into staying. For a tab that was around $200.00, I would have thought that I would get great food. The Elk had no flavor, same with the Rib Eye. The Pork chop was pretty good, a little too much cheese sauce was the general consensus. The Chicken Cordon Bleu was decent too. The appetizers were also a disappointment. Brussel Sprouts were mostly shavings. Maybe overcooked, I don't know. Mussels were pretty good. It appears that the meat wasn't the chefs specialty. I think we are done. I'll stick with Alchemy, never disappointed. read more

Such an enchanting experience here! My family and I came here for breakfast since it was the only place open at the time. It was barely 9 in the morning. I ordered their French toast and my mom ordered their waffles. We both admitted that these were the best waffles/French toast we ever tasted. Not to mention their potato pancakes are simply delicious!! Maybe I'm being a little over the top, but I loved how they display their food. Instead of using a condiments rack like most restaurants do (e.g Denny's, IHOP, etc.) they actually put their maple syrup, ketchup, butter and the like in cute little containers. On top of that, the staff is friendly and the place is so exquisite. I would definitely recommend this place. read more

Had I grown up in Murphy's or Angels Camp and never had the luxuries of dining in high end restaurants in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas then I might be fooled into thinking that this little bistro was a five star experience. Don't get me wrong, the food and the service are very good but for what they are trying to be, they miss the mark. At these prices the crab meat in the crab cake should taste fresh. Not like it's out of a can. The sauce was good too but why not put it in a ramekin. Especially when two people are sharing it. The salmon dish was fresh but it was simply seared in butter and served over mashed potatoes. Very plain, very simple, very boring. The lamb was the best dish but simply was not done properly. It was a little fatty but still had good flavor considering that it was done medium well! Medium rare should have a lot of pink in it. This meat was cooked through. The sauce was just like a blackberry jam with a hint of mint. Not bad but I think the sauce would have been better paired with French toast, not Lamb! The chocolate lava cake was tasty but came out entirely to quick and had that finished in the microwave, hot plate kind of thing going on. Maybe they haven't done their research or maybe we just caught them on a lazy night. But the food portion of this experience was average at best. The friendly servers are a huge bonus to this place and on some level make you feel a little better about paying $25 for a dish where they couldn't even get the temperature on the meat right. read more

The food here was REALLY Tasty--they use fresh and sometimes home made ingredients. The service was friendly and respectful and the place was cute. It was a little pricey but to be expected in this little boutique type town. They also have quite a few delicious options for vegetarians which was awesome for the BF...he had a HUGE burrito stuffed with rice, two kinds of beans, olives, cheese and covered in sour cream and a delicious salsa. I had the BLT with avocado and it was great. Would go back if in the area... btw, the reason we went there in the first place is b/c the desk staff at the resort we were staying in highly recommended their french toast breakfast...we didn't make it there in time but def next time! read more

SO RUDE! So we planned a trip to Murphys - stayed at a great b&b on the hill above it, enlisted the help of a concierge, and researched the restaurants and wineries. Grounds was on our list for lunch due to some strong reviews and our concierge. We walked in about 2:45pm on Saturday and stood in the entryway to be seated. And stood. And stood. Three staff members passed by us but did not say "hello" or even acknowledge us. Two staff members were behind the counter at the front and seemed busy - too busy for us. Finally, I asked someone if we could be seated to which she replied, as if it was a bother, "You can sit at the bar and have drinks, but we are not serving food now. We are in between lunch and dinner. You can try Firewood two doors down." Too bad. Had a least one person been a bit more pleasant, we would have been back. As far as go to Firewood - nope! Just because it is connected with Grounds. The food maybe fantastic, but if the service is unpleasant, why would I want to have that experience?!?!? read more

My wife and I just renewed our wedding vowes after 20 years and took the Honeymoon we never had. So, on the drive up to Murphys, we stopped in Sonora to grab a quick bite and when the waitress asked what we were up to we told her. Without hesitation, she demanded that we try Grounds. The following morning my wife and I said to each other, 'Eh, not too many choices around here for breakfast, so let's give it a try.' WOW! Amazing visual - audio atmosphere, as well as a super friendly, inquisitive (if offered up from us) on what we're doing and where we're from. Then there was the food. The 1st morning we both had the breakfast burrito to fuel up for our hike in Big Trees, just a few miles away. We were not expecting such a delight. The green sauce was incredible (and I'm not one for green sauce). Filling and healthy tasting. The coffee is INCREDIBLE. And, if you feel like it, there is a basket of pastries right on the counter to get as an appetizer. The 2nd morning my wife had the spinach omelet and I had the 2 eggs w/ Italian sausage. That cook knows his stuff. For something as simple as hash browns, eggs and sausage, I was impressed. As was my wife on her omelet. She kept repeating how good it was. So, lots of food for a reasonable price (this morning w/ tip was only $35). We walked away, both days, completely content and completely satisfied. Thank you, staff at Grounds. What a gem! A large group of us came in on Saturday morning for brunch. The size of the restaurant is very deceiving. They have a huge area in the back as well as outdoor seating. I ordered a hodgepodge of sides and really enjoyed the bacon which was a thick cut and cooked perfectly. The side of fruit was fresh and very large for a fruit portion. We all thought the service was great and they were really attentive. The breakfast burrito was also a hit as well as the super thick cut french toast. The slices were huge! This quaint little restaurant is simply awesome. The food and service are awesome and the ambiance is fantastic - whether you're indoors or outdoors on their beautiful patio. As a party of four, we sat outside on their patio for lunch. They have vines and flowers all over, and a wonderful sun cover above. The tables are spread out nicely, and there's views of the patio next door as well as other vine covered buildings and stone path alleyways leading back to the main street. They also allow dogs on their patio which is nice. We ordered many things, and everything was delicious. I had the chicken tostada grande with a latte. Both were fantastic. The tostada was probably the best I have ever had - with fresh crisp greens, plentiful chicken and veggies and a smoky tomatillo sauce to the side. Lots of olives and cheese as well. The cumin dressing - which I thought might be overpowering was a light noted accompaniment and was not too overpowering but made a light statement. The coffee was excellent as well, with nice balance - and not bitter which I liked. Five stars for great food, ambiance and service - this is a really fantastic place to eat lunch. read more
