We've been taking our sweetie to Pete for a couple of years. He is great with her and she is happy to come to his place, even though baths and grooming are not her favorite way to spend a day. He lets me know if he sees any fleas and then gives her a flea bath - or if her skin is dry, he'll use the oatmeal shampoo. He can usually take her with short notice (like the next day!). I used to go to Critter Clipper in Mtn View and they were wonderful, too, but extremely expensive (around $85-95 at Pete's versus $140 ish). I have had dogs and cats my whole life, and unfortunately, they can get fleas from going out in their own backyard, for a walk around the block, or from the park. Fleas are outside! Pete is great about spotting them on dogs and treats them right away. Pete loves animals. Recently he had a 'new' dog - my recollection is that it was a dog he found in his neighborhood, matted and hungry. He wasn't able to find the original owners and the dog had some serious medical issues, so he decided to keep him. Pete doesn't accept credit cards, so bring your checkbook! He sounds a little gruff at first be he is great with our dogs. He is super attentive and quickly put theme at ease in a new evironment. They came back clean, clipped and happy. My Labradoodle, Max, is now ten years old. He's a very sensitive pup who doesn't like change or going off routine. He's been groomed by Pete for many years, and I am so glad my neighbor recommended Pete (Grooming Works) to me. Pete is kind and nurturing with the dogs. When we step into his workspace in the morning, Pete keeps the lights off or on low to help keep the dogs calm. Also soothing, are the gray walls which he purposely painted that color for further calming effects. He keeps his window shades closed so the dogs don't get agitated or excited at each pedestrian that passes by. He really has thought so many details through to maximize the dogs' comfort. So, here's where the real story begins ... before I found Pete, I tried 7 other local groomers. At drop off and pick-up, Max was begging and pleading with his doggy eyes and body language for me to not leave him. It was heart breaking, and I thought to myself that this is just a normal thing for dogs to do at a groomer. Well, I was wrong. I never would have believed this if I didn't see it time and time again, but Max walks EAGERLY into Pete's business every time! Sometimes he even pulls me in! Then at pick-up, Pete gives him a treat or two. After Max is done chomping, I literally have to pull and ask Max 3 or 4 times to come out with me! That is how completely comfortable Max is at this place. Moreover, Pete is super friendly and flexible. Other groomers I visited were kind of uppity at times, and certainly not flexible. I drive 45 minutes round trip for both drop off and pick-up. I love Pete and the hair cuts he gives Max, but more importantly Max loves Pete and feels comfortable there. That to me is worth the drive and allows me to not stress all day wondering how Max is doing. I highly recommend Pete and Grooming Works! read more

It took me almost a year to write this review, but I felt I had to seeing that the overall rating was still 4 1/2 stars. I took my dog there to get groomed probably about 6 times over the last several years. It was affordable and they did an ok if not perfect job. However our last visit was just about a year ago and it was followed by a $1500 vet bill! I took her in for grooming and when I picked her up noticed the place was truly filthy with dog hair from many different dogs, all over the ground including on top of my dogs leash which had been dropped there. The next day I had to leave town for business and my husband noticed she just wasn't acting right. By 2 AM she was so lethargic and had refused to eat all day, and ended up at the vet. She had a fever of 104 and they said that her belly area was all red (where she had been shaved). She was also coughing. They were not completely sure if it was a skin infection, kennel cough or both, but she was sick enough to be there for 2 full days on iv antibiotics and iv fluids. Needless to say, we will never go back. read more

Originally I wasn't going to write a review of The Grooming Works because despite not having the best experience, the guy who works there was very nice to our dog, but after last night's flea infestation... So for starters, again the guy was very nice. When we first walked in my dog was terrified but he did a good job of coaxing him out and getting him to warm up. I felt pretty confident that he'd be taken care of. We had a discussion about what I wanted to be done and then I left. Having never had a dog before, let alone one that needed to be groomed, I had no idea how long it would take so originally I thought I would be there for an hour or two waiting, but he said he'd need a 4 hour window to do everything and I should leave. That annoyed me a little because I had my own appts I had to get to at 1 (in Palo Alto) and 3 (in San Jose), and so that was going to cause a huge issue for me with timeliness. I think it would be good policy to all new customers to let them know about that. Again, I've never owned a dog before so I had no idea what the routine was. Then when I got back I saw that my dog was in a crate. We had a conversation about whether or not he'd do well in one (he has been impossible to crate train and normally he cries and cries). He said he'd put him in a cubby instead. I could understand if he got snippy at the other dogs and it was for safety reasons, but there should be alternatives for dogs who don't like being in the crate. My first reaction to my dog when he ran out of the crate towards me was that he looked a little fluffy and weird. A little bit like a pom after a hair cut. Keep in mind my dog is a cavalon. Then the groomer said his hair was weird to cut. Yeah, I recognize that because he's a mixed breed, but that's why I asked a professional to cut it. Then ask I inspected the cut more I realized that he didn't exactly follow what I asked for nor did he do a good job (it reminded me of what it looks like when 4 year old girls cut their own hair). I had to cut away hair on his legs to even it out (this was a specific area I asked him to focus on), The areas that were cut were blunt and choppy and looked awkward. I also noticed spots where too much hair was taken off (on his tummy in one spot he's buzzed really far down (almost to his skin) compared to other spots. And on his back and near his tail you can clearly see where hair is shorter or longer. Honestly, I could have done a better, job. And then, a few days later my husband and I were petting him I noticed a bug crawling on him. I went to find it and get it off only to find that he had fleas. It was still early, so it's not like he had hundreds on him, but enough to warrant a bath and a meticulously combing over to find and get rid of as many of them as possible. Considering he gets regular flea medication, he barely left the house this weekend, and our cats don't have any, this is the only place he could have gotten them from. All in all, I'm extremely disappointed with The Grooming Works. I paid $70 for a horrible hair cut and fleas. Ridiculous. read more

Pete is amazing! He has been grooming our family dogs for over fifteen years. He creates personal bonds with your pets and listens to clients' needs. What I love most about Pete is that he genuinely cares for the animals he looks after. I've used several groomers in the past, but Pete is the best by far. Our dog Archie has been troublesome for many groomers , but Pete knows how to handle the most temperamental dogs and still give a great cut. read more

I went to 5 other places before I came here. Have 2 tibetan terriers who like to roll in bushes and debris. Pete is great. He gets out any matting, and debris they're carrying around and they come home cute and happy. I have no idea why this place has such great reviews. I would highly caution anyone who is thinking about taking their dog here. When I arrived, the place was an absolute mess (hair everywhere, collars all over the counter, clutter everywhere, etc.) In retrospect, I should have thought about the fact that I never had to provide proof of vaccinations or sign any sort of contract. Every reputable groomer should require this. I trusted the positive Yelp reviews and figured that I was overreacting. The owner said it would be a "4 hour window" which is normal for grooming and would have been fine if it had actually been 4 hours. He also said that his assistant didn't show up and that he had no idea why. I called after 3.5 hours and he said that it would be a "little" bit longer. Finally, after over 6 hours, I walked in and said I wanted to take my dog home. It was getting late and I was worried about my dog needing to go to the bathroom/needing to eat dinner. When I walked in, my dog was on a choke chain that was extremely tight around his neck. He was extremely distressed. When used correctly, choke chains can be okay but they should never be used for restraining purposes; he could have easily choked to death or injured his trachea. The owner became hostile towards me and said I needed to leave so he could finish my dog. I have a right to take my dog when I want to - for me, this is a huge red flag. He insisted that I go outside so he could finish and I said he could finish but I wanted to stay inside. He did not agree to this so I took my dog unfinished. He told me that I was an "anxious" person simply because I wanted to take my dog after 6+ hours. His behavior towards me was condescending and troublesome. I understand that an owner being in the room can affect grooming as the dog is distracted but I grew up in a family that showed dogs and have had multiple interactions with groomers who have absolutely no problem with an owner being close in proximity. If you are competent and trustworthy, you are not afraid to allow someone to watch. Period. read more

Was able to get a same day appointment for a 15yo male dog inherited from deceased family. When I went to pick him up Peter got on his hands and knees to hug the dog with such love, and then said "this guy is gonna be around a long time, he's just all about the love, just the love'. I took my 100 lb Bernese, Border Collie Mix 14 year old dog to Pete for the first time last week and was extremely pleased with the experience both my dog and I had. Pete came highly recommended from friends who also have a big dog. Pete worked on Gracie for over four hours. I'm a protective "dog mom" and am always hesitant to leave my dog anywhere, but she calmed down once I left (I could peak through the front window and see her without her seeing me), and when I came to pick her up, she was relaxed and happy, plus she looked beautiful.
