I rarely post reviews in general, but this one I've been coming to Critter Clippers since last year, and was pleased with the initial groomer I had; unfortunately, this groomer no longer works there. So I was setup with a new groomer and explained in detail how I wanted my dogs haircut to be done and a photo was shared with the new groomer so she had a good visual of my dog looked on her last cut. I was hoping everything would turn out ok, however that was not the case. When I came to pick up my dog, to my surprise there groomer left my dog's haircut EXTREMELY short and uneven. On top of that, the groomer handed me my dog with sharp nails, and ears were not cleaned nor had the hair removed. I had to point out out everything that hadn't been done, even though it was written in my dogs file and was talked about before the service was performed. The groomer then had me hold my dog in the waiting area while she use the dremel tool to work on her instead of taking my dog back to a table in their work area (all while in front of other customers). The way the situation was handled was anything but professional. I don't know if this was just an off day for this groomer or if this how they handle business in general, but it was enough for me to not want to return. read more

This place saved my life, as well as my pooch pup's. Saved us from an anxiety inducing, and ultra traumatic bathing experience that I now, happily leave up to the experts at CC. Phew. Critter Clippers has been around many a Moon, and handled with care many a fur baby. Thus the reason I brought my precious nugget to them! The fact that Critter employees and the owner are animal loving and very skilled in what they do, makes me feel at ease that my precious little pup is well taken care of. After a session of scrubbing, brushing, clipping, and snuggling, all with great competence and TLC, my little Scooby is ready to show off his new cut and prance with confidence and a paw five goodbye to the CC crew when I pick him up. CC is our go to for grooming care, and it should be yours as well. The staff truly care about your furry family members, and it shows. read more

I have been going to Critter Clippers and seeing owner Linda for three decades. My dogs have not been the easiest to groom. I've owned two pulis, a breed of Hungarian sheepdogs that has super dense hair (not fur). Linda has bathed, brushed, trimmed and sculpted my muscular, sturdy dogs. She loves them, and they have loved her. Linda's attention to the kind of cut I want - stovepipe legs, straight up hair on the head and nothing that resembles a poodle - is outstanding. She has tremendous patience with animals and pet parents, and she has shown through her own pet ownership that she deeply loves animals. I'm so glad she's reopened after the Covid-19 shutdown. I trimmed my dog myself for a bit, and found that my appreciation for Linda, while always huge, grew 10x. And so with that heightened regard, I submit this long overdue review. This place is amazing! This was my first time taking my baby Tippy to Critter Clippers and we were NOT disappointed. The owner cares so much about making sure each dog is comfortable, and ensuring the right cut - to leave the owner and pup happy. I've never trusted someone with my dog more! Linda (the owner's name I believe) is SO NICE and knows SO much about dogs. She knows so much about dogs' health - she even told me a toothbrush brand to try out for my dog's teeth. She also let me know that having my dog's ear hair pulled out would leave him susceptible to infection - which was helpful for me to make an informed decision (we left his ears furry!) His coat is so soft and it's already been 24 hours since he was groomed. Definitely will be back!! Just a note that this is a higher end groomer, so the prices match that expertise. read more

Positive: Professionalism, Quality, Value Call me the skeptic for cat grooming - why do it, they clean themselves daily! Well, it's really just cat spit. Barbara went to Critter Clippers for our first ever Cat Grooming for our 11-years old male, long-hair cat Misha. Amy spent about 20 minutes asking Barbara about Misha - his likes, dislikes, personality, etc. BEFORE anything was done. It took a bit over an hour for the whole process of the bathing, combing, grooming and nail clip. Misha came out looking spectacular - long black hair and a glowing coat. We are both impressed and Misha never looked better! I'm sold! read more

Pleasant owner and very communicative. That said, eighty-something price tag for regular trimming became $150 because a cut to even his coat was recommended. I have recently started taking Toby to Linda. Reason I like her 1. She is very gentle with Toby, she takes time to understand the cut I want and reconfirms when I pick up Toby. 2. Toby doesn't like to be in crate or stay in leash, she adjusts his time accordingly so that she can groom him in one go. What an amazing service from the time I call to the time i picked up Charlie. I called on Saturday morning looking to get a wash and nail trim for my dog and although they were busy some how they managed to make some time for me. I've been a big fan of since taking our Samoyed for many years. They always did fantastic work on such a hard to groom, fluffy dog. And Trixie loved being there. NEVER AGAIN After I brought my Pomeranian here the last time, he was yelping when I barely touched him from having been in so much pain after getting groomed at Critter Clipper. After that, I decided it was the last time I would bring my dog here. My Pomeranian has a super thick coat that gets heavily matted. When I picked up my dog, she apparently saved it all in a plastic bag and showed it to me with a look of disgust on her face. I've been to other groomers since then that can get the mattes out in a gentle and humane way that doesn't leave my dog traumatized every time he goes to the groomers. Not only that, they are very expensive. For the $100+ that they charge, I would think that they should not only give your dog a great cut, but know how to deal with dogs. Not to mention Rosemary nicked my dog one time, and then denied it. Since then, I've taken my dog to see Lisa at A Dog's Life in Palo Alto, and my dog comes back looking amazing and happy EVERY time. Plus, they only charge $65 and she hand cuts his thick fur each time and completely demattes him without leaving him in pain. ---------------- In response to your comment, Linda, yes, this is the reason I refuse to bring my dog back to see Rosemary. My dog was in so much pain after I brought him to your grooming salon that I decided I would never bring him back again! For those that are marking this review as funny, you can go F yourself for marking a review about a dog suffering as funny. Amy took our dog at 15 weeks when other groomers would not at that age. 5 years later, she is still working on him. He cannot wait to get into the salon, and looks amazing EVERY time. She calls as she is almost finished so by the time I get their, he's ready to go. The salon is clean, and smells good. I could not be happier. read more

I drove by this place last night and saw a "People on Yelp love us" sticker and nearly wrecked my car. Not this person on Yelp! After moving here from Sac 5 years ago, we were looking for a new groomer. We stumbled on this place after doing some grocery shopping nearby, so we gave it a shot. First, the staff was very rude and was critical about the way we hadn't been brushing our dog (let's save comments like that after we're established customers, please). Then, the grooming itself was the worst grooming our dog has had to this day. Keep in mind, we now get him groomed at Petco, which is "below" our standards for him, but a particular groomer at a particular Petco came recommended, so we gave it a shot. Haven't had a bad experience with them yet. However, this "upscale" groomer gave us the ugliest cut we've seen. We were too embarrassed to say anything when we picked him up. Then, if that's not enough, they cut him. A pretty bad gash, too. The only time in his 6 year old life he's been cut by a groomer. He always behaves at the groomer, so it wasn't like it was him moving that did it. The groomer even admitted he behaved very well. She just cut him. Accidents happen, but don't criticize how we brush and keep our dog and then do something we or no other groomer has ever done to him. And then, as if none of that isn't enough, they charged us $85 for a small poodle. UNREAL. By far, the most expensive grooming we've ever paid for. And we went to an "upscale" groomer in Sacramento. This is double what the place in Sac charged. And double what we pay now. I'll never be back to this place, I'll never recommend it, and I'll never understand why they have that Yelp sticker on their door. read more

I'm a cat owner, and this review is for cat owners only. The dogs getting groomed here looked perfectly happy. However, I didn't see any other cats there, and I think there's a reason for it. We have a long-haired cat that we wanted to get shaved. We'd had a successful experience at the PetCo on El Camino (which I recommend!!!), but Critter Clipper was getting better reviews on Yelp, so we thought we'd try it.... My Experience: When I called to make the appointment, the receptionist suggested 11am. But by the time the groomer called us to say that they were having some trouble grooming our cat, it was after 2pm. What was he doing for three hours? Apparently, sitting in his carrying case, in a cubbyhole, in a room full of barking dogs. And you're surprised that the cat is irritated and hard to groom?! Hell, *I* would be irritated and hard to groom after three hours of that. Anyway, at 3pm I'm there to pick up my un-groomed cat, who at this point has soiled himself and is now growling and hissing and raging in his carrying case (I've *never* seen him like this in 5 years of owning him). Then the groomer starts repeating over and over that I should've made an appointment for the end of the day, because that's when most of the dogs are gone. Really, it's *my* responsibility to know this? Why doesn't the receptionist know this? The groomer says "Well, next time..." The worst part about this is that that evening our cat had urinary blockage for this first time in his life. We had to take him to the emergency room and he was hospitalized for three days. The vet asserts that this was a coincidental co-occurrence, and not stress-induced. Amy has been beautifully grooming my Yorkie Soda Pop every 2 months for years now. She always calls me with a reminder for my appointment and will call me if she runs ahead of schedule so I can pick up my little furry girl. The dog always walks in and gets excited by the greeting from Amy, Linda, Daniel... or whomever is checking her in and always leaves looking beautiful. They are always professional, friendly, and do a good job. The dog doesn't typically like being away from me, but she obviously feels comfortable there and likes everyone there with whom I've seen her come into contact. I feel good about my fur baby in their hands and I just love Amy! My dog has a TON of long, fine hair that easy tangles. I don't rely solely on my bimonthly appointments to deal with it. If I did, not only I would expect to pay the groomer for her time to deal with it (and those charges are posted on their services menu), I would feel so very badly for my pet and the genuine discomfort she suffered by walking around with matted hair pulling at her skin. If one wants a groomer to deal with matted hair on his pet, he should expect to pay for the professional's time. read more

I went to get my dogs anal glands expressed here. The price was 20, and they were uncertain if they could do it. So I asked them to give it a try. After 2 Minutes, they said they couldn't do it. Fine, understandable. The fact that they have the balls to charge me 10 dollars? For 2 minutes and not even getting the job half done? Preposterous. I've been taking my Standard Schnauzer to Linda at Critter Clippers for about 12 years now. It has been a great experience. My dog had severe separation anxiety as a puppy when we started in 2003. Linda and her team were (and still are) extremely patient with him. They are very accommodating with his "personality issues" and have worked with his changes now that he's older. They have always listened to my requests for grooming and are willing to fix anything if I'm not 100% pleased with the results. All in all, I'm 100% confident leaving my dog with Linda and her team and know he's in excellent hands. read more

I grew up walking by critter clippers as a kid... and they're still around! mind you I'm 29 now, so that's a long time. I was always fascinated by all the pups getting groomed by the windows as we walked towards nob hill. Now as an adult, I got my first adopted Shih tzu pup and we knew we had to bring her here! We took her to a few different places, as we lived in Santa Clara and not mtn View. Since Penny needs someone who is patient and caring, we never found the right fit. Me and my husband moved back to mtn View 3 years ago and decided to finally give critter clippers a go. We had such a great experience with Larissa and the great staff here that we ended up sticking with them. Fast forward to now.... we ended up moving to austin this past year and regularly come back to visit my parents (still in mtn View). We love this place so much, we always make room for a grooming appt for our dog Penny! Thank you guys so much for providing great service! I've been bringing our mini poodle here for nail clipping every 4-6 weeks for the past 6 months. The place is clean, parking is easy, and pricing is fair. They are located in a large plaza. The staff is friendly and professional. Larissa is our go to person and she is highly skilled as well as gentle. I've brought my dog to several other groomers in the past and she is the best - she cuts his nails just right so it doesn't cause his quick to bleed. Happy we found this place! read more

It's been over 6 years since my initial review, so it's time for an update. My "boys" have been going monthly all this time, and they always look amazing when I pick them up. While going to the groomer isn't their favorite thing to do, they don't get upset when we take them in for their appointments. My husband and I know that Casey can be a handful. He hates baths and getting his nails done. His screams are deafening, as we've learned from grooming him at home. Everyone at CC is attentive to our dogs, and we love that. One day when I came in to pick them up, Linda didn't know that I had come in, and I saw her kissing Casey on his forehead. My heart just melted. Anyone who treats my dogs with such care is worth the extra cost. I should mention, too, that I've screwed up my appointments a couple of times, and both times, Linda was still able to groom my dogs. A note for the reviewers who admit their dogs or cats are matted: You make it sound like taking your pet anywhere while it's matted should be ok. It's not. If your kid had tangled hair, would you still take it out in public? I doubt it. Just as people would judge your parenting if your child's hair was matted, other pet owners are judging how well you take care of your pet by how your pet looks, regardless of whether you like it or think it's fair. Pets are a huge responsibility, and they deserve to be treated as well as you would treat your children. Nothing you can say will change that. read more

The staff is terrific and take great care of our dog. We have a Coton du Tulear that requires a lot of maintenance and we have worked out a very good schedule with the folks at critter clippers that is affordable. Our dog is rather shy but is always very happy both going to and being picked up from critter clippers - they take great care of him. I have and will again recommend them to anyone. read more

My main negative is that this place is very, very expensive. $150-200 for a cat hair cut and $120 for a small dog hair cut is pricey. My friends get their dogs hair cuts for like $65, even in SF! I Love Them :] i have 2 aussies and foster golden retrievers, i got a golden retriever in bad condition lastnight and was told he has no fleas. today i found two so i called Critter Clippers hoping their is an opening (because i dont want my other dogs to get them also) and they are able to cut out the mats that the previous owners neglected to do. i brought my aussie their once and was very glad of the outcome of her. Everyone in there were very nice and really know how to treat animals. lets hope the outcome of the golden retriever can help get him into a loving forever home :] read more

Since Daniel is the groomer who has always worked with our dog, this review is mainly about him. My interaction with the rest of the staff has been minimal, however they are always friendly and helpful, always remembering us when we come in. Daniel is a caring and talented groomer. His attention to detail impresses me and it is clear that he cares a lot about the well-being of our dog. He even invited me back for one grooming session so I can see exactly how it is done. Having the same groomer is a huge asset, something we had never considered. But now he knows our dog, all of her quirks and sensitivities, making sure to create the most positive environment that is possible. In general, she isn't a huge fan of being handled in the ways that are required for grooming, and she is a big dog. But Daniel always manages just fine. In fact, she gets excited when she sees him, even though she knows she is going to the groomer. Daniel, and Critter Clipper, definitely provides a 5 star service that we would highly recommend. read more

Yes this place is expensive, but it is worth every penny if you want to a meticulous cut, AND especially if you have any doodle dog that has hard to groom poodle hair. When we moved from Los Altos, I was happy to finally have access to other less expensive groomers. I went to five different groomers in Menlo Park and Redwood City, and my dogs came back 1) wet and 2) with dreadlocks. I went back to to Critter Clipper after eight months, and now I just deal with the 30 minute drive. We love Larissa. read more

After over a year of searching for a non-vet groomer, I found a great one. My Scottish Fold won't let me come near him with a brush and his long hair is an issue. He's a wonderful loving cat, except when it comes to grooming; that's when the fighter in him comes out. I've found the groomers at the vets go directly to conscious sedation when he gets out of hand, but that adds tons of cost, risk to the animal, and time. I know that good groomers understand cats and work WITH them, instead of trying to force them to conform. Anyway, the owner and I had numerous emails in order to accommodate my odd schedule. She has a great cat groomer, but she's not there all the time. I took in Chim Chim, met the owner and then the actual groomer came out and went over every detail of the process and actually came up with a better "look." (I'd always just done a "lion cut," but her idea was a little less severe). Two hours later he was ready. He looks amazing, smells amazing (not like perfume) and even my other cat is less hostile (since he smells different) than in the past. Unlike other groomers, she was very comfortable holding and carrying Chim Chim. It showed me how well she "gelled" with my cat, who is traditionally, very difficult for strangers to interact with. At $135, it's pricey, but worth every dime. Considering he gets groomed every 6 months, $135 is nothing! The vet grooming sometimes debacle often topped $300 with all the anesthesia and equipment, etc. I highly recommend Critter Clippers! read more

I don't have anything for comparison but I was really pleased with this place and the groomers. The facility looks great - small, clean and bright. There were two grooming tables and about four dogs there when I dropped Ada off. All the dogs seemed comfortable (no barking or nervousness). The groomers and staff were very friendly and thorough. Before I left we agreed on the look of her new 'do and all the treatments Ada would be getting. (We decided to skip toothbrushing because her puppy teeth are all loose and falling out.) They said it would take 3-4 hours but Ada was done in about 2.5. When I picked her up she was gorgeous, happy, and tired. (I was particularly impressed by what a thorough job they did plucking her inner ear hair.) read more

It has been a nightmare trying to find a decent groomer for my 7 year old shih tzu bichon mix. I am so glad the vet clinic recommended Critter Clippers! They called back and were even able to squeeze us in the same day. The place was bright and the grooming stations were clean and tidy. Everyone was nice (which is pretty uncommon in the Bay Area) and professional. My dog's groomer was Larissa and she was amazing! Showed concern towards my anxious pup and actually asked what needed to be done. The end result was great - my pup hasn't looked this good since we moved here 2 years ago. This morning I looked at my mini Schnauzer and realized things were getting a tad bit out of control- her leg hair was very long, scraggly and matted, her eyebrows were wild and her coat was getting so long that her hair was looking way curlier than it's supposed to look on a schnauzer. On top of that she smelled bad and had dried food stuck on her beard that I just couldn't get out. To sum it up, she was a MESS. I called every place I could find on Yelp in Fremont, Newark, Union City, Milpitas, Hayward, San Leandro, Castro Valley and San Jose but they were all booked solid. I had no idea it was so hard to make a last minute appointment at a pet grooming place, since this is the first time I've owned a dog! Critter Clipper was the last place on my list of places to call before giving up, and it just so happened that they were able to make space in their busy schedule for my puppy. Yes, Mountain View is pretty far away from Fremont but the results made it totally worth it. Juno, our puppy, walked out of there looking beautiful! The way they cut her hair really accentuated her breed and she looked like a cute little showdog when we came to pick her up. They did a great job! I was very pleased. Everyone that works there is really nice and one can immediately tell that everyone there loves dogs upon walking through the door. They all seemed very happy to be there (so did all the dogs!) and the environment was very upbeat and positive. I definitely recommend Critter Clipper. They are a little bit pricier than other places I've looked into but it is 100% worth it. read more

This place apparently books up weeks or even months in advance. Your best bet is probably to take the time and show up in person to make an appointment. I attempted a cat grooming appointment by means of their online portal and by leaving a voicemail. But it was only after leaving an irate review that someone got back to me a week later. The response was apologetic and even helpful in terms of referrals elsewhere, but ultimately, it came too late. Do not pass any time waiting to hear back from this place. If you can't visit them in person, then just call around elsewhere and hope that somebody picks up the phone. To be fair, this establishment is typical of pet groomers in that nobody actually picks up the phone. My wife and I ended up doing a botched home job, making me wish that this place had been able to accommodate us. read more
