I'm a fan of Grinders, whether it's the eastside, the west side, or the concerts out back. The pizzas here are delicious, the sandwiches are enjoyable, and I love the laid back atmosphere. The last time I was in here was when St. Paul and the Broken Bones got rained out and we heard rumor they were still playing for a few folks inside of Grinders - we got in and watched one of the coolest impromptu shows of our lives. That's of course a random occurrence, but this is the kind of place that might have surprises, and the vibes are always chill and welcoming which I appreciate. Visiting for our 1 year anniversary. Amazing place on the inside. My wife got the salad she said it was pretty good but not the best. I got the glutton definitely a big guy's dream. I have always loved almost everything at Grinder's. Whether it be pizza, sandwiches, or just drinks in general. I hadn't dined in there in awhile given the pandemic and all, but decided to eat there one Friday night. We had fast service and I decided to get the veggie Philly and tots. The Philly is always good and I loaded it up with jalapeños to make it spicy. The tots came out hot but super salty so they were just kinda meh. I've only eaten at the other part of Grinders, and I was planning on eating at Seed. I had a Muncharoo, that was about to expire. Saw that Seed was closed and drove to Grinder's West. Wow, there's art inside the tables, we were at Jessica Logston's Splenda table. I couldn't stop staring at it. There is a table with lighters, and pictures, one with sculpture under the glass. Fantastic decor. I had the veggie sandwich,and the bread is quite possibly the best I've ever had. The sandwich had portabella mushrooms, and cucumbers and green peppers and other vegetables. There was a aioli sauce that had a sweet taste, and the whole sandwich taste, just fit together. Behind us were these cool lights that changed colors. There are tall tables, and booth tables, and regular tables. The music could've been turned down a bit. Turn the music down,and I'd give it 5 stars. People were there with kids. We waited almost an hour and the waitress asked if we were ready for our checks... I responded that we hadn't even received our pizza! Plus she had never refilled our drinks. I think if I hadn't been there to catch up with an old friend I would have walked out! In the end, the pizza was very good and our waitress took 50% off. I came here with my coworkers for lunch just after 12pm on a Thursday. Parking was bad in my opinion and we were lucky to find street parking close by. This place was busy and we took the last table. This place was small but the staff were all friendly and helpful. One of my coworkers kept mentioning the Famous Chili Bomb Pie so that was what we were going to get. There were a lot of things on the menu besides pizza like burgers and sandwiches. We decided to order our own pizzas. I ordered a 12-inch pizza ($8.75) with pepperoni ($0.75 per topping) and the Famous Chili Bomb Pie ($3.99) which was added in the center of the pizza. We waited a while before our pizzas came out. The pizzas tasted great and the Famous Chili Bomb Pie (tots, chili, cheese, and scallions) was delicious. If you want to add some more flavors to your pizza then the Famous Chili Bomb Pie would be the item to choose to add to your pizza. We were in a bit of a hurry so we took the rest of our pizza to go. I wish I would've taken a picture but my Le Hog pizza slice came out looking like it went through a meat tenderizer. Even if it didn't I'm not sure the review would change as the taste was decent at best. The back end of the crust was solid but the rest was soggy and wasn't able to hold it's contents without bending completely in half. This is very sad, but this is the last time I will go to Grinders. At around 615, my husband and i went into Grinders and were seated. After waiting 10 minutes, we were given water and menus. At the time there were 2 newly filled tables, 2 tables with food and a huge party of like 12+ people came in. The waiters then proceed to provide service to all of the tables, except ours. After 30 minutes and all of the waiters passing our table easily over six times each we just got up and left. Came in for the first time with some coworkers at around 1:00 pm. Menus and drinks were brought out quickly but the waitress was very slow to take our order. She checked out like 4 tables and served a couple new ones before even bothering to take our order. After a 40 minute (or more) wait we got our food and oh my goodness the long wait was forgotten. Describe Grinders West in one word: phenomenal. The Experience: My father and I chose to go to Grinders for an early dinner. We walk into the empty restaurant and sat down. We chose to get a chili bombed Le Hog which is advertised as seen on Food Network. We wait fifteen or so minutes until our waitress brings us the pizza. To our surprise the pizza we were presented wasn't what we ordered. Before we could say anything the waitress explained the, "kitchen messed up and made a cheese pie instead of a Le Hog. We're remaking your order and we'd love for you to have this one on us." - That's dope, thanks - Fast forward five minutes and the manager comes over echoing what the waitress had just conveyed us. - Cool, they care about their customers - Ten minutes into feeling like Ninja Turtles eating some pizza the chili bombed Le Hog was delivered to us! Best way to describe the pizza: go try it yourself it's worth the drive where ever you are. Before we left the waitress brought over pizza boxes without request along with the check. The angels at Grinders West took 50% off our check for the wait and mess up. -They owned up to what they did and wanted to make the customer satisfied- I bought a round of drinks for the staff and we left! Grinders West is a cool spot with delicious food. I can't wait to go back and try their gluten free crust. If Grinders is the surly little punk who hates authority and refuses to clean his room, Grinders West is his older, more mature sister who just graduated from art school. You see, Grinders is funky, unique and decidedly for adults. Instead of the fried this and processed cheese that of Grinders, Grinders West offers an incredibly fresh and delicious menu. I have had a variety of awesome sandwiches here, and when i'm feeling a little healthier, salads. There's an awesome ahi tuna salad, and also a killer pear salad. Also recommended is the spinach salad with strawberries and a raspberry vinaigrette. Today I had one that was more in tune with my vegetarian goals. It was a delicious bowl of mixed greens tossed with onion, sun dried tomato and a balsamic vinaigrette. Now, the selling point of this salad was supposed to be fried goat cheese. I got it....all two pieces of it. A very tasty salad, but i feel like the titular ingredient of a menu item should be a little more present. The decor of this place is pretty great. It's bright, airy, and interesting. Each table is a unique piece of art. I could describe them, but the fun is in looking at them for yourself. The bathrooms are behind the walls of glowing...well I don't know what they are. Glowing pods of some sort. The men's room has a really nicely painted multicolored wall, a very unique sink and an awesome ball of lights to illuminate whatever it is you may be doing. Going to the bathroom at Grinders West is like going to the bathroom in the future! One of the biggest complaints about Grinders was always the service, and for good reason. That being said, Grinders West is MUCH better. The servers are still somewhat edgy, so they maintain the Grinders aesthetic. (By the way, I recently found out you get a "MAN"mosa for $4!!!) Stopped in to Grinders West for a quick salad to go, and I totally wish this place was in St. Louis! The best thing about it is the art in the tables. Literally, in the tables underneath the glass. I saw sugar packet art, as well as army men designs! There's so much to look at and it's all so unique. The staff was super friendly and I went with the Mama's Lite Garden (lettuce, tomato, artichoke hearts, carrots, sliced red onions, cucumber, mushrooms, diced green peppers, celery, and sliced green olives.) Yum, right? I think this salad would have been so great with a different dressing... I got the balsamic vinaigrette and unfortunately I hated the taste of it. They have a ton of choices so just get anything but that one! I also got the hummus and pita bread, and it was good. SImple, but good. I do wish they could package it a little differently than putting the hummus straight in the to-go box instead of putting it in a cup or something first... it made it a little messy. After trying to call ahead to pre-order (which is a selection on their automated menu one pay choose), we went to their place on 18th to order and wait for take-out. A lady greeted us, and we mentioned we had tried to call ahead with no luck. From there on out, she completely ghosted us and barely said 10 words. Having worked in the fine wine industry, I advise Grinder's to find servers who are hospitable and welcoming. My friends and I were in town for a card tournament, and seeing as this place was close-by (and I'm a huge fan of 'DDD'), we decided to head there for some late-night eats and beer. First things first; this place, and the surrounding neighborhood, can look a little intimidating at night. Stick to well-lit sidewalks, and you should be ok! Secondly, this place is a dive bar; don't think it's anything but. However, the food here is amazing, and should definitely not be missed! As we walked towards Grinders, we heard an outdoor band playing. I guess this place is legendary in KC as a great place to catch local bands in their backyard, and tonight was no exception. As it had been in the upper-90's, with dew points in the 70's, nearly all day, it was still too hot and muggy outside, so we opted to stay inside. Because of that, I think we lucked out, because our waitress was very attentive and friendly. Their on-tap beer selection is quite good, and the whole thing was built by Grinder's owner, Stretch Rumaner. He's a legend in the world of 'DDD', and I asked our waitress if he was in the bar. She said, "He's around here somewhere; probably outside, enjoying the show." I held out hope that I would get to meet him, but if not, that's life sometimes. My friends and I just decided to get a little of everything and share it "buffet style". We ordered their Bengal Tiger Pizza (green sauce, tandoori chicken, crab meat and hearts of palm), an order of Krinkle-Cut Fries, and a South Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich. All of it was amazing! The pizza was as unique as the owner, and the philly steak sandwich was probably the best I've ever tried! Best of all, just as we were about to pay our bill, Stretch Rumaner walked by our table and said hi! Describe Grinder's West in one sentence: "Dive bar that serves up some great food and beer!" The longer version: Roll in at a little past noon and the only spot to sit is at the bar. No problem for me I enjoy "bellying up" any time I am given the option. Server was quick with the drink order as I dove into the food menu. Pizza, wings, Phillies, hot dogs, etc. This place has me covered for anything I am craving. I spotted the philly cheese steak and decided I must give it a try, but skip the chips I want tots! A few minutes later it arrived and was delicious. Melty provolone (FYI whiz was an option) with loads of tender steak, green peppers, mushrooms and onions supported by a hearty roll. Well seasoned and not overly messy this was what all philly's should be like. I did not have a beer (on my lunch hour from work) but I did peek at the menu and they have a solid line up on tap and in can/bottles. Well I can't come to a place called Grinders and not order a grinder (a toasted sub sandwich, made of either meatball or sandwich, with sauce and cheese on top). That being said, the wings and Philly Cheese here are legendary and I'll be trying them on my next visit. Sat out back on the "patio" and had some tots and a Boulevard Bully Porter with my meal. My friend got the chicken fajita salad, which looked great, and actually took longer to come out than my grinder. Weird. read more

We wanted to take our out-of-town guests to some place special to KC. We decided to visit Grinders West for brunch. They were in for a bit of an adventure so were game to give it a shot. We expected the place would be crowded for Sunday brunch, but there only a few tables. Service was a little slow, but the portions were plentiful. We shared an order of biscuits and gravy. The price is great at $5.50, but the gravy consistency was lumpy and not very flavorful. The biscuits seemed pretty good. Two of us had omelets and were pleased. One had BLT with smoked gouda potato casserole and she loved it. I had a pastrami and egg sandwich on ciabatta. It was good, but would have preferred thicker cut on the meat and a fried egg instead of scrambled egg. The cheesy potatoes that came with my meal seemed to be prefab frozen kind of tatertots with a bit of cheese inside. They were edible, but not yummy. I was a bit sad that Grinders West didn't have as much artwork as the orginal Grinders next door, but we enjoyed the table dioramas. We went on a Saturday, just in time for brunch and I must say I was very impressed. Everything is fresh and tasty:) The prices are very reasonable and it was a perfect stop for lunch. This salad was so refreshing. Pear Salad Fresh spring mix tossed in Champagne vinagrette, topped with dried cranberries, candied pecans, Gorgonzola cheese, fresh sliced pears drizzled with balsamic glaze. The perfect salad to go with a hot and balmy day. Roasted Chicken Sandwich With spinach, balsamic vinegar, pesto, tomato and fresh mozzerella on a hoagie roll-this was really good! I am not a pesto gal but I ate it. It married beautifully with everything going on with the sandwich. I think that it as to be in there to provide the perfect balance for the taste of this. Biscuits and gravy (1/2 order) for 2.95! - My 4 year old daughter ordered this and she had quite a bit for a 1/2 order. It was soooooo good. Fried goat cheese salad. Crispy medallions of fried goat cheese on a bed of mixed greens with red onions, toasted walnuts, red grapes and sun-dried tomatoes with balsamic vinagrette. Having grown up in the country, all the biscuits and gravy if I had ever eaten, was made with the pork sausage, or RB rice's "hot" sausage-- Grinders uses Italian sausage, assumably the same as their pizza & it was amazing! My buddy had the omelette, which was reportedly very good, so I stole a bite. WOW the rich bacon flavor! The coffee was good, hot & endless refills. Do yourself a favor, and ask for the drink menu if one doesn't come automatically... I had a bloody Mary, which was good, but I wish I would have ordered the loaded bloody Mary with infused habanero pepper vodka and a slice of their amazing bacon! Their team service was superb! We were greeted three times before selecting our own table, appetizers were suggested, follow up and attention to detail great, a manager touched the table twice & kept us informed on our earlier request to speed up service so we can get to the show! Really, really delicious food + a lowkey atmosphere + friendly wait staff = an excellent night indeed. My friends and I hit up this spot for dinner and were not at all disappointed. First off, shoutout to Christina for very wisely cautioning my buddy to not get the Death Nectar wings. Apparently, it can burn your skin?! It's basically the spiciest thing you'll ever eat (I'd have to trust my friends because I don't tolerate spicy well) and seriously, eat at your own risk. Instead, he opted for a delicious, not spicy, not vomit-inducing or ER-trip-causing, cheesesteak. I got the baja burger (yummy yummy sweet bacon and a fantastically done patty) and yes to those homemade potato chips. We also got tater tots to start and the wimpy wings, which had a kick but were fun to chow down on because I wasn't jumping around looking for water every 30 seconds. Heard about Grinders on the Food Network. Since I was in the area, I thought I would walk next door and check out Grinders West. Amazing. Brilliant concept: Two restaurants with separate style and menu, meet in the back with outdoor seating, metal sculptures and a stage and plot of land for concerts in the evenings. Perfect atmosphere with blues music playing, while people sit on picnic benches in the sun and eat good food. This is what we ordered and it was fabulous. (On weekends both menus are available at both locations and outside. Pizza is usually only served at Grinders.): PIZZA - Goldberg "Phats" - This gourmet favorite starts with a delicious pesto sauce topped with smoked salmon, capers, and cream cheese. Going back to when we first arrived - hence only the four stars - Service was amazing when we walked into Grinders West. I thought the guy was going to give us hugs! I wish I got his name. However, serving staff outside was a different story. We felt like a waste of their time. No smiles. No consideration. Service knocked a star off. But other than that, the experience was great. The decor in Grinders West was very cool, artsy and modern. I took a lot of pictures of the custom made tables and wall lights. The pizza had A LOT to be desired; I would only recommend for drunk/late-night pizza, but the prices are inexpensive (a large slice is only $3.26 or 2/$6.00). The homemade chips were soft/chewy, which was a surprise. The Philly Cheesesteak was good, but not the best I have had, which is what Grinder's is known for. We have been going to Grinders for years. This location has gone down in quality each year. My pizza was not brought to me until the entire table was done eating their meal. We were over charged on two things. The sandwich was good but is much smaller than it used to be but also more expensive. My tiny margarita in small plastic cup was $7 and I do not think it had a drop of tequila. My husband's same small size beers were right at $6 each. At least at their Lenexa location their beers are a full pint. The pizza remains very good though. Overall a very disappointing visit. read more

This review is about the service, not the food - we never got that far. Went with 2 friends after First Fridays this past weekend and expected it to be busy with such a crowd. Did not expect to wait 25 minutes for a server to even come to our table (even after flagging another one down to ask for water, which he never brought). We were told they were extremely busy but not understaffed although our server admitted she had 12 tables!?! When she finally did get over to us we put in our orders. An HOUR later, while everyone around us got their food she promised twice it was coming right up. When we complained about such a wait (it had been an hour and a half at this point), she said she had no control over it... We finally couldn't take it anymore, our hungry bellies were mad and irritable. We got up to leave and my boyfriend went to pay for the few beers he had had. When he asked our server (because yes, he had to go get up to find her to pay) how much he owed, she said she didn't know because our ticket had been LOST!!! So the food she kept promising us would be right up hadn't even been made yet!?! Totally unacceptable. I understand a busy restaurant when there's an event such as First Fridays, but staff it appropriately or don't seat the customers. I was appalled at such service and will probably never go back. We've been to Grinders for drinks on a First Friday, but had never actually eaten here until last weekend. It had been on the "must try" list for awhile, and I'm glad we were finally in the area and ready for some food! We opted to go into Grinders West, simply because it seemed a little busier at the time. We got a seat immediately, and enjoyed checking out our "shadowbox art" table (decorated with various bic lighters), as well as the artistic surroundings. I was worried that we were going to have to order off the breakfast menu, as we sort of arrived at the tail end of brunch, but happily we were given lunch menus as well, and had the option of ordering off either menu. The drink specials included $2 mimosas, which I was NOT going to say no to. And for $2, what a deal! The mimosa was not only very tasty (a good mix - plenty of fizz and juice), but also a generously sized portion. No champagne glasses here - we got good sized stemless wine glasses nearly filled to the top. We wanted to try a couple of different things, so we ordered a cheese steak (with provolone - no cheese wiz this time around) and a 10" Bengal Tiger pizza. The cheese steak came out way before the pizza, so it was a good thing we were sharing both, and it was great - large, and a good combination of flavors. I don't know if it's the most authentic cheese steak this side of Philly, but it was good. I like, too, that you don't *have* to get onions, as a lot of places just have a peppers and onions mix, and you don't really have a choice but to pick out the onions if you're not a fan of them. The Bengal Tiger pizza took awhile (the cheese steak was long gone by the time it arrived), but it was worth it. A little bit greasy, but really, REALLY good. I did have to spice it up just a little bit with some red pepper flakes, and I found myself wondering what it would be like with the addition of some sweet chili oil, but all in all, I really enjoyed it and would get it again, no question. My husband preferred the cheese steak, but I would have to say that the pizza was the selling point for me. Service was good - quick and friendly - and we thought the prices were more than reasonable for the amount and quality of food. I'm definitely a fan, and we'll definitely be back. read more

Oh my god this place has some ROCK STAR sandwiches!! I highly recommend the Cuban Pork if it's available...which for me is more like seeing a shooting eff'ing star because they run out so much! So good! The place is also decorated pretty cool, VERY different from the original Grinders...less grimy and every table is an art piece. Cool thing is you can order beer and food off the orig Grinders menu if you like and you share the back patio area. read more
