Best restaurant in Chattanooga…read more Long post alert! If you don't want to read it all, here's what you need to know: * Spectacular authentic New Orleanian cuisine * Deliciously inventive cocktails * Top notch service with genuine, kind people My family and I went to Neutral Ground today for brunch. We have been extremely cautious about going to restaurants since the pandemic hit, and this was probably only the 6th time we've sat down in a restaurant since this all started. We called on our way to see if we needed reservations to sit outside (still haven't sat inside since last May). They said no, and when we pulled up, we saw that they had already set up the table for us, complete with a small fire pit to keep us warm. They are very careful about COVID. Everyone is required to wear a mask, temp checks at the door, and they take your first name and number for contact tracing, all of which was very appreciated. The ambiance is very trendy, kind of like a modern take on a high end 60s bar. Excellent drink menu as well, and they are happy to make anything for you. Ok, the food. We ordered the standard breakfast for our three kids, which consisted of scrambled eggs, hash browns, smoky bacon and creamy grits. The staff went ahead and split up the meal evenly on three small plates, and it was more than enough for them. My kids are fairly picky eaters, and they are every bite! If you have small kids, you know how rare that is! Speaking of kids, the restaurant is very kid friendly. My wife got the breakfast sandwich, which had spicy sausage and eggs on an English muffin served with plantain and sweet potato chips. It was amazing! The sausage tasted slightly like chorizo, but with a flavor all its own. I ordered the catfish and grits (pictured), and it was perfect. The catfish tenders were fried perfectly; crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The grits were fluffy and creamy with a melt in your mouth sauce on top. All garnished with thinly sliced fresh jalapeños to give it an extra depth of flavor and spice. SO GOOD. We got some apple cider donuts and strawberry hand pies for dessert and both were truly great. The donuts were soft and sweet, while the pies were flaky and light. What the chef is doing at Neutral Ground is extremely unique in Chattanooga: his food is authentic to New Orleans, yet he makes it his own. This is the third time I've eaten here, and the first time we have all sat down in the restaurant. We love many of the restaurants in town, but in my opinion this one can't be beat for its combination of service, ambiance and food.

It was all so delicious and AUTHENTIC. The Gulf Shrimp Salad was the appetizer I was least excited about but ended up enjoying the most! Super fresh and light. The Bahn-Mi was authentic and the NOLA Hot Sausage felt classic and tasty (if you haven't had a Po-Boy before this is a GREAT introduction), but the Crispy Oyster Mushroom really took home the award for our favorite Po-Boy, another pleasant surprise! The broth on the Brisket Meatball Yakamein was otherworldly, but the real show stoppers of the night were the West African Red-Red and the Shrimp & Grits. All in all, you can't go wrong here. The wait staff is with Proof Bar and Incubator and they were incredibly welcoming, fun, and made an effort to help move us to a bigger table because of all the food we ordered. 10/10 will be back. For reference, we went on a Wednesday at 6pm and were able to get seated upstairs (rain prevented sitting on the welcoming patio outside) and they already had reservations lined up which is always a good sign. As someone who lived on MLK for a few years, I can't say how excited I am to have an option like this so close by and with more than convenient hours, especially for later eating!

And lunch was more affordable than anywhere I can think of. We enjoyed so much food and a relaxing atmosphere. Our waitress helped us choose from the menu and made sure the tasty bread and cinnamon butter came out asap. Mom got the Mediterranean Cobb salad and I got the farmers pie for our entrees. She said her salad had the right blend of grilled chicken, bacon, tomatoes, feta, cucumbers, and egg over spring mix greens. She also got a small order of grape leaves since she said they are the best in town. The farmers pie I really enjoyed, so much tasty roasted zucchini, squash, mushrooms, red onions, spinach, feta, and Parmesan rolled into that filo dough. And just the right amount of basil pesto and balsamic reduction drizzled in. We both had leftovers! Definitely putting this place on my repeat list.

It took quite a while to get our food, but it was hot. I tried the French Toast and it was still soggy in the middle, not completely done. Wasn't bad, just not how I like them cooked. My son must have liked the Chicken n Waffles because they did not last long, lol. I didn't mind my order. I didn't read that description through for the Country Benedicts but I'm not disappointed. I also inquired about catering and was told they do cater and have a smoker, pizza oven and that they go heavy on appetizers. Very nice!

What took me by surprise is that they have a roll of paper towels for each table instead of traditional napkins, and plastic disposable cups to pour the water in that they have set out for each table. Overall everything tasted great and I would definitely come back to try more items.

There was one other couple in there. The first thing I noticed was the sad, outdated, stereotypical decor. We ordered chicken satay, Pad Thai, and I ordered a Thai iced tea. The chicken satay had no flavor, the Pad Thai was cold, the noodles mushy, and there was zero flavor. The peanuts were stale. The ice tea was terrible. The service was slow, for us anyway. Apparently the couple that was there were regulars and their service was quick. Another gentleman came in after us, also a regular, and has his food before us. I ordered the TK roll and Alaska roll. My sushi was delicious. The fish quality was pretty good, and the vegetables tasted fresh. At first looking at the sushi, I thought the portion size was small. But the amount of fish that's in the TK Roll was plentiful. The salmon on top of the roll was a pretty large piece. The sweet chili sauce was just great. And overall, the roll was so well balanced. Each part complemented each other so well. My stomach is growling just from looking back at the pictures and writing it about it haha. And the mango sticky rice! The mango was so fresh and juicy. And the sticky rice had the perfect sweetness level. I wish they gave more sticky rice in proportion to the mango because there was much more mango compared to the rice. That's my only qualm with our dinner. For all the dishes though, food presentation was beautiful. When our server set our plates down, I was so impressed. I'm pretty sure I said "wow" every time she brought something over lol. We had a great experience and a fun girls night. I would definitely come back again, especially for the sushi. Chaos Mongolian Grill -- Where You're the Chef of Your Own Feast…read more If you love food that's as unique as you are, Chaos Mongolian Grill in Chattanooga is your playground. Here, you don't just order a meal -- you build it. Start by picking your protein from a lineup that covers all the cravings: tender chicken, juicy steak, fresh fish, plump shrimp, and more. Next, hit the seasoning station like a pro -- dried chopped onions, garlic powder, garlic salt, and plenty of other flavor-boosters are ready to make your creation sing. Then, pile on crisp veggies, crack in some eggs, and drench it all in your choice of sauces. For the base, I'm a noodle loyalist (they soak up every drop of flavor), but rice, cabbage, and other options are on deck. Once your masterpiece is stacked sky-high, the cooks work their magic on the sizzling grill and bring it to your table hot and fresh. It's not all-you-can-eat, but the "stack it as high as you can" rule means you'll still leave full and happy. The staff is warm and welcoming, and the grill team keeps things moving so you're not staring at your empty plate for long. Yes, the building shows its age, but honestly, the flavors are so bold and the experience so fun, you'll barely notice. If you're ready to unleash your inner chef and eat exactly what you're craving, this spot delivers big.
