I had a top-notch Falafel Plate at Ankar's today and really enjoyed it. The three big falafel were perfect- crisp on the outside but thick and REALLY moist and full of a great spicy filling. There was a delightfully fresh and pretty hummus, tender warm pita, and a good Greek salad with wonderful Greek dressing. I could not have been happier with any of it. The restaurant was clean as a whistle. I look forward to returning and the price was so reasonable by today's standards for such excellently prepared food. read more

Located along busy Hixson Pike, it's easy to find as the signs are large and easy to see. Parking is quite good even when it gets busy. Waking in, the interior is set up like most other fast food places. We ordered to go, and the sandwiches came out in less than 10 minutes, even during the busy lunch rush. Unfortunately, the Ruben was a disappointment. They use mayonnaise instead of thousand island dressing. That is simply not a Reuben. The flavor was so jarring I could not finish the sandwich. There are many other sandwich options on their menu, so you can find something to fit your tastes. Just make sure to read the menu description carefully. read more

My Mom mentions Ankar's when she wants to treat herself to drive thru, except Ankar's is homemade deliciousness instead of fast food. So, I had to see what all this excitement was about when I was in town this weekend! I ordered their homemade black bean burger and a slice of their peanut butter pie. The black bean burger was HUGE and flavorful! The peanut butter pie was good. Mom ordered one of her regular dishes, a falafel wrap, and loved it again. And the staff were so nice and friendly. Placed a ToGo order last night an hour before close. We were told to just come through the drive-through to pick it up, but there was a 20 minute wait. Brought home the food and it was a mess! Wife's cold sub was so soggy that it seemed like it had been dunked in water. I got the chicken parm sub and a steak in a sack. Chicken sub had clearly been made beforehand and possibly microwaved to reheat. It was hard as a rock, yet soggy in places. Steak in a sack was also soggy and cold in the middle. My wife could barely eat any of hers and I got halfway through my chicken sub before we just threw it all away. A few hours after I fell asleep, I woke up with explosive diarrhea and a crampy stomach. My wife then woke up and had to vomit. My wife called to ask for a refund and they put the owner, Judy, on the phone. She argued with my wife and said that it was her fault that her sub was soggy because she should have known that the sauce that comes on it wouldn't be good for take-out. She also argued that it was her fault for waiting in the drive- through line instead of coming in, even though that's what we were told to do. Wife went in for a refund today and the cashier told Judy from across the restaurant "That lady is here for her refund", at which point Judy decided to argue some more, loudly, across the restaurant, in front of customers. So now everyone is staring at my wife and Judy storms back to the kitchen, says something about the lady didn't like her food, so then the entire kitchen staff is poking their heads out, mean-mugging her. She could see that the kitchen staff was handling ready-to-eat food with no gloves and nobody had head-coverings on. There was even a toddler in the kitchen while she was there. She felt humiliated by the experience. We've eaten at various locations of Ankar's since we moved here in 2001 and we've always loved it. It's a great menu and we've never had an issue until we moved to Hixson. We've eaten three times at that location and got sick twice. We've had to deal with awful customer service from Judy both times we had an issue. Although we will continue to eat at the other locations, we will never be back to the Hixson Ankar's. read more

My wife says the steak sub is all she ever gets. There must be a reason why! One time they messed up and gave us the sandwich in a pita/pocket bread. I think I enjoyed it more. I've never had a bad meal or experience with Ankar's. Small family owned businesses that has a quality product is hard to come by these days. Besides, where else can you get a few hot wings and a brewski and not be in some noisy kid(unfriendly) bar. Everything I've had there from soups to shawarma is good. read more

We ordered take out through the drive through and got the steak in a sack, specialty hoagie and cheese sticks. Once we got home and actually started eating both of us were not impressed. The steak in a sack was lacking flavor, the specialty hoagie was so soggy I ended up taking the bread off and trying eat the meat (which honestly was not much better). The one good thing we ate was the cheese sticks though! Comparable to sonic I would say. If we go back we're definitely going to try something different, but for the price I'm not sure if it's worth it. read more

This review does not make me happy. I have been eating at ankars since the 80s and it is no longer the ankars it used to be. The onion rings are the only thing left that they have as a claim to fame, and even that quality is sagging. The service has never been outstanding, but even that has gotten consistently worse. I have given them numerous chances, which they have dropped the ball several times by errors in the order, sometimes strange pricing, and progressively smaller portions along with degrading quality of ingredients. Below is the review of my last visit, and by that I also mean it will be my last visit. Lastly, I think you can tell that they do not care enough to pay attention to their reviews and try to make changes. Worst salad I've ever had (and that's saying something). Greek salad with added gyro meat and a tiny baklava was over $17! ...AND IT HAD A HAIR IN IT! I had to throw most of the salad out. Barely a handful of rotten lettuce, and barely a handful of dry meat, and this was considered large. Not to mention that every other ingredient was extremely poor quality. The quality of this place has been consistently dropping over time along with what seems to also be cuts in portions. When the father owned/ran the business, he kept much higher standards. I venture to say he would be thoroughly disappointed in what they are putting out now. They say it takes three generations to kill a business, obviously, this one is on the third. Sad. If you read a few reviews on TripAdvisor, you will see there is a definite pattern here of poor service, poor quality, hair in the food, and overpricing. Waited quite a while (which they apologized for) and when I got home I was in disbelief of what I paid vs what I got. A smashed, soggy sub, that had a total of three pieces of the cheapest over processed lunch meat I've ever seen, and to top it off, they forgot the bacon. Gyro without sauce? Seems to happen often! Make sure you check your orders that are to-go! Otherwise, every other time is OK...always forgetting something but just check your order before you leave so you can catch all the items they forget! It has happened numerous times. I love Ankar's. I find their food delicious and reasonably priced. Usually, I get the black bean burger, which has always been fantastic. If you like sweet potatoes, you must try their sweet potato fries. I will warn you though- you will be hooked! I've also had their falafel, which is excellent. Other members of my family have tried the Philly Chicken Rider and have had zero complaints. Additional sides that are good: the onion rings! Being born and raised in the south, I'm very particular about sweet tea. I'm proud to announce Ankar's has delicious sweet tea. We ordered Ankars off a delivery site this past evening and it was disgusting. I have never been more disappointed in food in my life. The mushroom Swiss burger was super thin and tough . Mushrooms were shriveled up, super over cooked and not abundant. For about 10$ this burger was more than a disappointment... it was a bad investment. My husband lived in Chattanooga for several years and the one place we Must go when we visit is Ankars! He always gets the Steak in A Sack ( I believe that's the name of it.) I used to love Ankar's because they had (and have) the best onion rings around. Unfortunately their sandwiches just aren't good in 2022. You're gonna end up spending at least ten bucks here. Be prepared to be disappointed with your teeny tiny portion of chicken or beef (both very dry and warmed-over)...and the buns are just horrible. There are worse places out there for sure. I actually got sick after eating there. Nothing is fresh. The Reuben was 90% sauerkraut and two very thin slices of corn beef. It was a rainy day. I passed this restaurant almost every day of my life in TN. And finally I decided to step in. It was not crowded . I found this place interesting/not sure how middle eastern food can be combined with hamburgers but I guess they can. It is a cheap place and it got cooked fast. I guess people come to this place because it gets cooked fast and not for the taste of food. I am glad I visited this place. And plus they have a can for donations for McKamey. Overall a good place to go eat. A little more on the low quality side, not always a bad thing. Was able to feed the whole family (6) for under 40 dollars before a 20% tip. I would normally take photos, but the food totally wasn't photo worthy, just wrapped in white paper. I was able to get a buffalo chicken tender sub (modify) which they were more than happy to do for me. Overall, great little local sub place that's been around a long time! Oh, almost forgot, they serve Cheesecake Factory cheesecake, not the banana one, but had several kinds to choose from! The service was absolutely awful. The lady in the back making food was very rude. When my food came it was incorrect so I went to ask them to fix it. The lady said "well I made you what you ordered", and she acted like it was such an inconvenience to do her job. Wow. She then went on making rude remarks loud enough so I could hear. Sorry but if you work in a restaurant try to have a good attitude, it's the least you could do. Her behavior was unacceptable and I will never come back or recommend it. This family owned local place has always been a favorite. At the Hixson Pike location, I was patient when the dining room wasn't open and service was extremely slow due to staff shortages. But today they lost our family as a customer due to rudeness. No excuse. I came to pick up a call in Order and after waiting a minute, I caught the eye of the young, dark haired, bigger girl behind the counter told me "I'm not at work yet." Wow. I'm the reason you even have a job. You are behind the counter and you can't hand me my bag of food? So many alternates - "someone will be with you in a minute" or "Joe, can you help this lady?" Visiting for the weekend and picked here for dinner based upon the previous reviews. Maybe they had an off night....? Ordered 3 dinners to go. Pet peeve of mine is counter service with a tip line on credit card receipt. I used to be counter cashier in a restaurant, and that was a huge no-no. Anyway, I wrote in $5 tip and she didn't acknowledge it in any way. Watched cashier and 5-6 others stand around talking, waiting for the food to be ready. That's fine. I just mention this plentiful time to get an order right, as once our food was packed and handed to us, I asked if spoons and forks were included and she said they were. Guess who ate her dinner with her fingers because no utensil? My gyro platter was a good size portion, and while the meat was better quality than many gyros I've had in the south, it was dried out. The "gyro sauce" wasn't tzaziki, but seemed to be plain yogurt or a yogurt/sour cream mixture. The fries were average. No salt or catsup provided. The side Greek salad was the best part of my meal, with lots of feta and a nice dressing. The hamburger steak dinner was completely tasteless, despite the many onions. There were perhaps 3 slices of mushrooms with the onions. The brisket dinner was not good either, with dried out, poor quality "brisket." I should've known based upon the brisket photos in their restaurant. Trust the photo, for those who know what good brisket really looks like. The only things were enjoyed were the salads. We threw half the food away and are scratching our heads over the previous reviews, especially the one claiming this is the best food in Chattanooga. Oy. read more

When I was in Germany, I ordered the most amazing doner kebab. It was the typical gyro setup in a pita, but with the addition of fries. IN THE PITA. Yes. I dream about this sandwich. Everywhere where there are gyros served in a pita, I look for fries. I have been let down in Atlanta. But when I was back in Chattanooga for Thanksgiving, I decided to come back here. I'd been to Ankar's before and always got a falafel sandwich. Their falafel is really good, being a vegetarian definitely not required despite all the other options on the menu. I'd had their fries. I knew they weren't the weird, battered kind, which I ended up with the only other time I tried to recreate my dream sandwich. It's not the best gyro in the world, and it certainly doesn't have the good, slightly charred outer bits that my sandwiches in Germany and Belgium both had, but it worked. It worked so well. I could have cried. They cut just the top off a pita and stuff it full with gyro meat, lettuce, onions, and tzatziki sauce. Then...you just have to stuff it full of fries and you will be transported back to sitting in a hotel room on a Sunday night in Trier watching the hockey world championships while eating the greatest sandwich of your life. While the fries aren't anything special, they are what fries should be. They're nice and hot, and they are simply fries, which is all you really need. Was up house hunting and asked my friend where to go for onion rings, then we could get something to go with them... But I had a CRAVING for REALLY good onion rings which are sadly lacking where I currently live. Got the chicken shawarma in the pita (forgot the name they call it) Went back the second time when I visited again to view more houses. That time it was onion rings with steak and cheese in the pita. Their sandwiches are forgettable. Their onion rings are not.
