For the last 30 years I've ordered carrot cake and it's frosted on the outside. Never had to special order it. A few years back I ordered a slice and it didn't come with frosting on the outside. Why? Not sure. Every single cake is frosted all around. Why is this one not frosted now? So I always just got a side of frosting to frost it myself. Now today I went to order a slice and they inform me I cannot buy a side of frosting. Only a pint. And the lady on the phone "assured me they never came frosted unless special ordered". Which is funny because I can see my order history and photos from birthdays for the last many years and always came frosted. When they stopped frosting the individual ones I was able to purchase a side. Now you can't? What the fk kind of customer service is that? Never ordering from here again , for anything. My favorite is the " Gregg's famous ribeye steak sandwich grilled to perfection." $16.99 Served on a grilled torpedo roll with sautéed mushrooms (50 cents extra). If you ask for it rare, it comes out perfectly. It's not a thick steak, so it doesn't take long to cook it. Served with a side - I usually get cole slaw of french fries. I love pickles and warm bread there as well. I also like the lobster salad roll, turkey club and my husband loves the chili with onions and cheese with chips. 9.79- Chili with chopped onions and cheese and served with nacho chips. Everyday Turkey Dinner - 18.89 -Roasted turkey served with real mashed potatoes. bread stuffing. brown gravy and the vegetable of the day. I don't like the gravy, but like everything else. In-house fresh turkey. I have 2 favorite desserts! The Chocolate Layer Cake -7.79-- still the best chocolate layer cake around and the Éclair - 7.79- with real custard in the middle and HUGE. I would never have made a reservation here if I hadn't been specifically assured that I could pay over the phone for my mother's Mother's Day dinner. Instead, my mother ended up being pressured to pay for her own meal because the server told her she was "cut" and needed payment immediately. When I tried to resolve the issue afterward, the general manager, Jason, was unbelievably unprofessional. Rather than helping figure out what happened to my credit card information, who it may have charged, or why the payment arrangement they promised wasn't honored, he attempted to gaslight me into thinking my mother never paid at all. That my card was charged and cash was left on the table for a tip. The conversation escalated to the point where Jason actually told me to "fuck off." The fact that a manager would speak to a customer that way -- especially over a Mother's Day dinner where my mother was left paying for herself after prior arrangements were confirmed -- is absolutely unacceptable. My parents ended up leaving before the issue could be resolved, and he couldn't find the time to check the ticket in the POS system. He was just too busy, the reason why I wasn't home for Mother's Day is I too was working in a restaurant and if I did this to any of my tables I would be fired on the spot. The complete lack of professionalism, accountability, and basic customer service was shocking. I highly recommend taking your business elsewhere. read more

I went to Gregg's on a Friday night for a quick bite before heading somewhere else. It was my first time in Warwick, and it's on a very busy road. One plus is that it has a huge parking lot! We were seated right away, as the place is huge. It's divided into different sections, which I noticed when I was looking for the restroom. There's a nicer area in the back with a bar. The menu is extensive. There's something for everyone and there are gluten free options like, as well. Their cocktail menu was huge and there were so many tasty options, but I wasn't drinking that night. I ordered a wrap, and it was okay, just a normal turkey wrap with fries. It had chipotle in the name, so I expected more flavor. The service was friendly and good. If you're a group looking to satisfy different tastes, this might be a good option for you! read more

My friends and went to Rhode Island for a few hours on a Friday. We came across this restaurant an exist before where we had to be. Such a popular restaurant. It was busy! And looked like it was well known for their desserts. They looked delicious! They had awards on their wall because of them. But it was very spacious, a back room and a bar. Very family oriented restaurant. Prices were great and the menu had wraps, tacos, sandwiches, apps, bigger dinner meals, cocktails of all kinds that looks soo good! And desserts!! They also had some GF options. I ordered a GF California chicken wrap. I didn't like the GF wrap used as it just broke and the chicken didn't have much of a seasoning. Lacked flavor. My friend who ordered the salad also thought her chicken lacked flavor. Besides the food, portions were big and services was excellent. Our server was very nice. read more

Big Disappointment! I do love the cake at Gregg's. However, the toffee cake we recently bought wasn't what we're used to from Gregg's. The cake was good, and it had lots of Toffee candies on top, but the whipped cream was much less than I remembered in previous years. This Rhode Island staple is still serving the same nostalgia and good food they're known for! I recently visited and sat on the Tavern side of the restaurant. My party was quickly greeted and allowed to sit where we wanted. Service was a bit slower, but it was a weeknight and there were only a few servers working. As always, the staff was more than kind and accommodating, so I don't mind a relaxed pace at all. We ordered the cucumber mint and Washington Apple martinis. They both tasted very good. For food we ordered the eggplant focaccia and one of the Thanksgiving Special sandwiches. Both sandwiches were packed with ingredients and had large sides of fries with them. You will not go home hungry, but you will certainly have leftovers! We enjoyed our meal and drinks without any problems and have a great evening! Definitely consider visiting this restaurant. They also have other locations! They have a very expansive menu and are sure to have something for all diet types. It should also be noted that they have a huge dessert menu! Gregg's is the ideal family restaurant. They have a huge menu ---everything from kids' food to interesting international dishes to mild dishes for those with delicate systems. I've enjoyed everything I've ever eaten there, over many years. Almost as important is how comfortable it is. There's a large parking lot, plenty of seating in booths, and wait staff who are kind and polite and don't seem to mind if two old friends sit talking for two solid hours. I had a large take-out order at Thanksgiving and a nice young woman carried it to my car (for which I was very grateful) and wouldn't take a tip. read more

Ordered the Jamo Peach tea. It was a suprisingly light, refreshing drink with a hint of peach flavoring , very good summertime beverage. However, I had two I also ordered the pretzel, expected honey mustard but got a cheese sauce that would be killer in macaroni and cheese. The pretzel was crisp outside and bready within. At first to me it looked like too little salt but as I'm eating it, it seems to perfectly marry with the cheese sauce. My only recommendation would be update the menu or mention cheese sauce is being substituted for honey mustard sauce-I'm lactose intolerant. The summer promotion, give the ticket with the drink, patron shouldn't have to ask for the raffle ticket several times. Also asked for pickles, never got those, disappointing. read more

I have always loved Greggs and haven't been there in a while. My husband and I decided to go after we Miriam Hospital seeing we hadn't been there in so long and I thought we had a frozen TV dinner from Swanson. I remember getting their turkey always my favorite and it was just it was just like a frozen dinner. My husband has liver and onions, which was always our favorite and that two was boring as hell very disappointed. I think you changed changed style, but just wasn't what we used to get. gravy used to be all over the plate over the stuffing and potatoes and we got a dingy little cup of gravy on the side, dinner came out before soups. I love a good French dip and this checked the box. But I really stopped here on the way home from the zoo because I heard they had THE BEST chocolate cake. I grabbed a piece to go. Did I mention the chocolate cake? It was truly amazing. I wish I had purchased an entire cake. I don't even like chocolate cake that much. But this is the best chocolate cake I've ever had. Planning my next trip to the zoo- just so I have an excuse to drive to RI for cake. Service was also great. It reminded me of Howard Johnson's of my childhood in Cleveland Ohio. We went to the North Kingston, RI location which was very nice inside and outside. It looked like it was a newer location. The outside dining area looked great, but we had a reservation for 16 inside. It was out first time here, but our RI cousins with whom we were here with eat often at the other locations. I understand that it is a safe place to bring a lot of people because the extensive menu has many options as well as daily specials. The menu even includes the old fashioned diner staple of liver and onions. I heard the Saturday Special of Prime Rib is exceptional in taste, quality of beef, and in value. The Sunday Special of Roast Turkey Dinner was ordered by me and two others. It was delicious, especially the thick slices of freshly roasted white turkey, bread stuffing, homemade style gravy, real mashed potatoes, and tasty squash. Excellent choice! Other orders included assorted Reubens, Cobb Salad, club sandwiches, and Buffalo chicken Mac and cheese. The French Onion Soup was excellent! Family raved about the Onion Rings! 5/5 for Gregg's Death by chocolate cake slice. I used to live in Providence and when I was briefly in town this last week, a slice of this cake was at the top of my list. And OMG did it live up to my memories and expectations- and I'm not even a crazy chocolate person. But I got u servings out of this heavenly sweet moist chocolate deliciousness. I think the crunch of the mini choc chips verses the soft cake and frosting is my favorite part. Worth every calorie lol read more

The desserts are really the main draw for this place. I have farm memories of eating all of their cakes growing up. With plenty of parking and a lot and it is free. No issues with the service. Ambiance is fine. Bathroom is clean. Prices are reasonable. If you're in the area it's worth checking out at least for dessert anyway read more

Undoubtedly one of my favorite restaurants on the planet specializing in delicious comfort food and obscene dessert portions that are cartoonish by half. A "slice" of carrot cake will literally deliver half the cake to your table with a smile... I can't imagine what would have arrived if I didn't order off the healthy options menu. A place like this could only exist in Rhode Island where coffee syrup is administered intravenously and donut shops outnumber the population 10:1. Gregg's is a mandatory everytime I'm back. I thinks the food and service here, and other Gregg's locations are consistently good to excellent. A reason why this local chain lasted this long. I will almost always prefer them compared to a national chain family restaurants. Tonight, my 14 year old decided to take a challenge and eat the Death by Burgers. Its a double decker 8 oz beef patties on thick texas toast. He manage to finish it to everyone's amusement and decided to go for the Death of Chocolate cake. That, unfortunately did not turn out well. But it was good cake, nonetheless. Kudos to the chef and staff for doing a great job of accommodating a big party of 14 in a short notice. read more

Come for the dessert, stay (or not) for the food... Stopped by here for a quick lunch with my grandmother. She grabbed a soup and I got a seasonal salad. First, the service was attentive and professional overall. Very happy with the service we got especially the waitress. My strawberry spinach salad arrived and came fresh, perfectly assembled, and an extremely generous portion. However, for what it is, I just think it was a little pricy at around $17. Really basically a couple handfuls of spinach, a chicken breast, and some feta and almonds and a couple strawberries cut in half. My grandma ordered French onion soup but the check said chicken. However the waitress caught/remembered it as soon as she put down the chicken, and came back with the correct soup in a jiffy. No concerns there. For one reason or another the onion soup was missing the traditional baguette and cheese on top, which obviously makes it classic French onion soup. Instead, I don't know what we got but it seemed like half-French-onion-soup. My grandma liked what she got though, and ate the whole thing, so if she's happy I'm happy! We obviously left room for dessert. My grandma ordered a massive apple crisp and ate the entire thing. Only disappointment there was that there were massive ping pong ball sized chunks of half melted brown sugar in it that she had to constantly take out and leave on the side. She said it was delicious aside from that! I ordered a piece of classic death by chocolate cake, to go because my salad was huge. Later that night I had the chance to dig into this cake, one that I admittedly hadn't had in a long time. So rich! So much chocolate! So good! This cake is like a Rhode Island staple and I really believe you haven't lived in Rhode Island until you've eaten Gregg's desserts. This piece of death by chocolate cake could easily serve 3-4 people generously. Just one piece! That's how rich and generous their pieces are. Overall, this cake is not as good as you may pick up at a local specialty bakery or patisserie, especially some of the bakeries on Federal Hill, but it's worth trying once in awhile. Not sure I'll be rushing back to Gregg's anytime soon but overall not a bad experiences by any means. read more

My friend and I headed out to Gregg's for dinner on a Saturday night. The wait was not too long and it was well worth it. We had a great table over in the lounge area. We had a delicious salad with chickpeas and steak. I'm always in search of the perfect Manhattan and the bartender did not disappoint. The restaurant is known for a couple of things: it's pickles and it's desserts! The service was spot on and a pleasure to be there. As an edited update to this review I brought the container back inside (I had eaten my takeout in my car) and the manager agreed the avocado was rotten and she's like "yeah, oh so sorry." But she did NOT EVEN OFFER to refund me on the added avocado!!!! Again, absolutely unbelievable. Additionally, as I was eating my side of broccoli I bit into an area that just tasted BAD like it was turning rotten. I had to spit it out and didn't finish the broccoli. This review is solely based on a cake from the bakery to go! Wow, the Giving Cake is the absolute best chocolate (& peanut butter) cake you will ever have. It almost tastes like pudding cake. It was my daughters 4th birthday and the pandemic put quite the damper on what we had planned so I wanted to make sure she had the best cake ever and knowing she loves chocolate, I knew this would be a hit. The cake was packaged and ready, quick pickup. It's got about 4-5 layers and is pretty big. I sent slices home to neighbors and in-laws to avoid the added pounds! While visiting Providence, RI, we wanted to check out their infamous dessert place called Gregg's. Actually, I thought they were bakery spot until I actually got there. They do offer actual diner-type food as well. They had mainly three sections in the inside. The deli, take out, and the dining area. We went there late in the evening after dinner, so it was not so busy, which was good to us. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a staff and taken to one of their booth tables. We were forewarned from our family member that we would not be able to eat the cake at one sitting. But until it came to our table, I didn't completely trust her... The size, the weight, the decadence of each cake, she was so right! I went with Hasboro Giving Cake, a.k.a. Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake. Gregg's will donate a portion of the purchase price to the Hasbro Children's Hospital. I thought that was really great! Another dessert of choice was Carrot Cake. It had a good amount of frosting, I liked how it was not covered in crazy amount of frosting. This way, you get to taste the carrot cake itself, instead of it being overpowered by the flavor of the frosting. This is a real deal carrot cake, totally awesome! Then, last but not least, the most famous and popular cake of all, Death by Chocolate Cake. This one has six layers, and loads of chocolate... This cake was the cake to die for, especially for chocolate lovers. There is nothing but chocolate here, but in different texture and flavor. Very moist, decadent, velvety and just melt in your mouth... It certainly is sinful... The staffs here were nice, although our server disappeared for a bit, but he came back to check on us and the coffee a couple of times. Death by chocolate cake with its moist layers of chocolate cake and buttercream surrounded by chocolate chips which give it just the right crunch.
