I wanted to wait to write this review until my project was complete, but I think we are in a spot where I don't care about the repercussions anymore. Work we wanted done: New roof and Solar installation. 1000 sqft home with 12 panels. When we started the process: August 15th Cost: 65k Why we chose them: They are not the best priced but we felt like their service level would be better than a huge national company. We were very wrong. Also they were certified platinum through the roofing company and solar we wanted. What has gone wrong in a nutshell: We felt very forgotten and gaslit throughout this process. We were told and notified things were submitted when they weren't. They blamed the city on getting permits on time but in reality the permits were approved weeks before they came out. The process wasn't given to us on how things were going to happen and in what steps, we got different answers every time we asked about this. Then when we follow up we get told that we still have time etc etc. Even when we have people scheduled to come do the install the workers didn't show up, they didn't even know until we called, then said a delivery should have happened the day before. Again, not keeping us in the loop. I would have assumed that through all the hoops we had to jump through they would have given us more TLC, nope. Not at all. Nick Messenger said he was going to personally help me project manage this, but I haven't heard back from him after he made that comment. Not through text not through call. And every time we do talk on a call it's because whatever was happening blew over and he would assume that I'm happy now. So all in all this is just another really good sales team. I highly suggest not going with them and finding a cheaper place that might be a national company of sorts so that you have more protection and better pricing. Reducing my rating to 1 star. After I wrote this review the issues have continued. People showing up unannounced at my door at 7.15 in the morning for inspection. I was promised a technician will come and show us how to operate the system, the scheduling for that has been a nightmare. I reached out to their Marketing Director who promised to assist, but that didn't lead to anywhere. Overall extremely poor communication and even poorer project management. The owner Hazel doesn't seem to care - initially said she will take over communication and then she was just as bad. I have made every possible effort and have voiced every possible concern, but that has all been brushed off. ----- Communication throughout this entire project has been extremely frustrating, and often nonexistent. Nick was my original Project Manager, and later Hazel, the company owner, took over. Initial meetings went well, and Nick said all the things I wanted to hear. We signed agreements in September, and I was asked multiple times to provide copies of my utility bill. By the end of October, I hadn't heard anything, so I followed up myself about permits. During the sales process, I was told permits take 6-8 weeks, but later I was told they're instant. Communication was either completely silent or contradictory. At the end of November, after chasing for updates again, I was told someone would contact me the week of Thanksgiving to schedule installation. That didn't happen. In early December, after following up again, I was suddenly told I needed a different system installed--supposedly better, but with a shorter warranty. I didn't really have a choice, so I agreed. Installation was scheduled for December 8. December 8 came and went--no one showed up, no call, nothing. I escalated, and Hazel personally assured me she would oversee the project. A new date was set for December 16, and the system was finally installed. After that, I was told Edison needed to install a meter, and that the system should be operational by mid-January. They had me sign an installation completion document and followed up aggressively to get it signed, but what they didn't explain is that they would use that to immediately collect payment from my lender - before the system was operational or had passed inspections. Throughout January, I kept following up and was told Edison was outside their control. On January 13, my father passed away, and I informed them I had to leave the country. I stressed that Edison needed access before I left since my home is gated. Hazel completely ignored my calls and messages. I contacted Nick, and instead of helping, he accused me of "creating negative scenarios" for simply asking questions and expressing frustration. He said he would coordinate with my husband while I was gone, but never even contacted him. I returned on January 31 to find no one had reached out. Edison had eventually shown up and luckily was able to access the property through my mother-in-law. I followed up again - Nick didn't respond. I called Hazel who told me there are still inspections required, with no clear timeline. Today is February 9, and I'm waiting on the first inspection on February 13. The system is still not operational, and I have no clarity on when it will be. They just continue blaming it on other parties but still don't proactively communicate to keep me informed, I have to drag it out of them. A lot of important details were never disclosed during the sales process, especially the number of third-party dependencies and delays that may occur. Despite this, they've already collected full payment from my lender. I'm now paying for a system that isn't working, with no clear timeline on when it will be and no accountability from the project team. I've also not been trained on what to do and how to use the system once it is in fact live. I would not recommend working with them. It's also awfully inappropriate to be sending Facebook friend requests to customers. read more

They did a really great job on my roof! They handled everything from the permitting to making sure the inspector came before it rain. Also the initial reason I picked them is the superior material. They use something called titanium FR. I'll update my review in 10 years to let you guys know if it lasted longer than 10 years haha. I like this company also because of their good communication. I had a very positive experience with GreenCal Construction starting with Francisco who came to give me a bid. He was professional, knowledgeable and personable. I had several bids but decided to go with GreenCal Construction for my roof replacement. It was a challenging roof and I had 34 solar panels that had to be removed and then replaced. I had termite damage over a large portion of the roof. Luckily it was old damage but carpentry had to be done. Hazel, Crystal and Francisco kept me updated every step of the way. I had a large dome skylight that Ernesto evaluated. The work was done smoothly and in a timely manner. I think even ahead of schedule. It looks beautiful and I am thrilled with the results. I live in a townhouse where our tile roof is taken care by the homeowners association while the flat roof portions that house the AC units of a 1979 property are the responsibilities of the homeowners. My flat roof is attached to one of my next door neighbors and they had issues with roof leak. Unfortunately, that means we should replace our half at the same time. I did not want to replace my side since it was not leaking. But I guess it would be a matter of time before I do and the cost would eventually sky-rocket. We decided on using Green Cal. It was costly indeed, as my side of flat roof was less than 300sf and my cost (including permits) was about $4000. It seems Green Cal did a good job in communicating with us and sending photos of their progress. We shall see if my neighbor's side has stopped leaking come rain season. Masoud came over and explained all my options for a reroof and gave me the best quote after getting 7 other quotes. He went over the process, the warranty and how long it would take. They came on a Monday to remove my existing solar panels and Tuesday with a trailer and removed all the shingles from the roof. We were hopeful that the wood was in good condition but the planks were too far gone to reuse so we had to replace it all with plywood. It was a fear that Masoud had prepared me for, so I wasn't surprised and it was necessary. The removal took a couple of days and we had to wait for inspection. The following day they came and started the install. Most of the install was pretty quick and only took a couple of days. The thing that took the longest was the re-install of my solar panels. They had to wait for a part to come in for my particular panel. Once that was ordered they installed it within a day. After a couple of hours I was noticing that my solar system was not producing as it should. I reached out to Elsa and Crystal who both were quick to respond and send out someone to get them running. It was just a panel that wasn't plugged in all the way. That was remedied and I'm happy to report that it's back on track. I really appreciate their customer service and although there were issues, they were quick to help me any way they could. We worked with John Serrano, our project manager. He was always available for my husbands phone calls and met with my husband on the job site to make sure we were happy with the job. They did excellent work and the new roof should outlast our home ownership. We did not know that there were actually 2 roofs on the home, so we had to pay extra to have the first roof taken off and hauled away which was in excess of the original estimate. But this was all explained to us and the costs involved. We also had some bad boards that were replaced to our satisfaction. It was like dealing with a company that has never installed before. They were uneducated on the process of dealing with Edison, lazy, and intentionally delayed our project due to incompetence numerous times. I hired GreenCal Construction to put a new roof on my house. Salesperson, John was thorough in explaining the project and understanding an extension that I wanted to add as well. I felt the project cost was good in comparison to other roof companies I had quotes from. The project initially estimated to take a few days, but it ended up stretching into more than several weeks due to a upgraded portion of the plan being left out of the original HOA and city permit application process, and engineer approvals. This was frustrating, which resulted in me reaching out to the owner, Hazel. She came out to my house and once she realized the delays, things began to run a little quicker and she personally stepped in to make things right. Throughout the roofing project, Ernesto was fabulous and provided great customer service!! In the end, after 10 weeks, the roof looks great, and I do appreciate the effort that Hazel made to correct the issues. My roof had green stain/green algae that needed to be pressured clean. I was a bit worried that the green algae and dirt wouldn't come off, but as you can see, they were completely gone after the work was completed. Also, I quoted around with other roofing companies and they were charging a lot more than GreenCal. I'm glad there are still honest folks and Companies out there who's not out there to take advantage of people by overpricing/over-charging their clients. If I could give GreenCal 10 stars I would. From start to finish GreenCal was amazing. We had a complete nightmare on our roof after another company installed solar panels and a CoolPV/Fafco system that was suppose to heat the pool (btw, if anyone tries to sell you on that system, run screaming). From day one, the CoolPV panels leaked chemical filled water on our roof. The previous solar company would not fix the problem and abandoned their warranty. In the meantime, not only did we have leaking panels, our 15-year-old roof was being destroyed by the chemical water leaking onto it. So this was going to be a complicated fix because not only did we need the solar panels and CoolPV plumbing ripped out, we also needed to replace the roof. I tried over a dozen solar companies and no one would touch that F*@ked up system. After almost a year of searching, I came across GreenCal who immediately responded and said they could do both. From the moment project consultant Des came to look over the situation to give us an estimate (a very fair price) everything moved very efficiently. Nick, the solar specialist came out with his, team, evaluated the situation, made a game plan and we were off and running with project manager Juan overseeing everything. The solar was disassembled day one, the roof came off day two, day three the city inspector inspected the wood, day four the new roofing supplies were delivered, day five the roof went back on, day six the inspector came back, and found a very minor problem that he wanted addressed, day seven the guys were back on the roof making the adjustment, day eight the roof passed final inspection, day nine the solar panels went back up. Efficient and flawless. One extraordinary note I would like to make: In between the time that the roof was off and while waiting for the inspector, Juan called me at 7P to tell me he'd been watching NOAH and feared that there may be some rain. Could he please send someone to cover the roof. By 7:30 a guy arrived alone, worked in the dark and covered the entire roof in plastic to ensure no damage to the wood. Unbelievably amazing! I've had several contractors do work on my house and each previous to GreenCal was a bit of a nightmare in one way or another (we all have our stories), but GreenCal and the entire team already listed, plus Crystal and Elsa who texted every day with updates, made this such a pleasant experience. Really frustrating company to work with. They are wrapping up a full roof replacement project on my house and were selected due to a combination of lower cost provider, tenure in market, and lack of CSLB complaints. Main issues: - Overcommitments on timing to start & finish. - Change orders that feel like a margin improvements vs honest work. Example, they build in the proposal a wood credit that I was told typically covers 10-15% of roof wood replacement. Later, the PM needed a change order for a few extra thousand in wood boards. I asked how much wood was damaged on and needed to be replaced. They said about 15%... - Poor attention to detail. It seems like the crew does legitimate roof work, but they must have sent me the lowest cost crew/subs they had. Scratched metal flashings, inconsistent tile installs (they cut massive X's for nail holes vs using the proper drill/saw), damaged security system wiring, incorrectly installed tile caps, and so many other small issues that it builds into what feels like a significantly poor work product and customer experience. - You have got to manage them. I've now walked the "finished" job site 3-4 times with them pointing out these issues which even their PM (Juan) acknowledges as poor workmanship / should be better. These issues could literally be wrapped up in one day of crew work, but for the last few weeks they've been sending a random crew member that does not speak English to do spot work. The lack of english would be less of a problem if I had confidence and trust in the crew doing what is needed, but that has not been my experience. On the plus side, why I have not left a one star is: -they are a legitimate company who will obtain and do permitted work -lowest cost proposal (not the case after the change order) -Start strong and do some basics right (trash management) -Office and PM staff are at least responsive and available to talk with read more
