One of my favorite restaurants in Lincoln. I recently visited the green gateau for a rehearsal dinner. The service was kind, quick and attentive and the food was delicious- per usual! We had Brussels sprouts and calamari for appetizers. Both dishes were crispy and had great flavor. The sprouts had a sweet balsamic glaze which complimented the earthiness well. The calamari had an airy, crispy breading and a plethora of sauces to choose from for dipping, my favorite being the cocktail sauce which was savory and tangy. For the entree I had a lettuce wrapped cheeseburger and I was really impressed. The beef was juicy and fresh while the condiments were fresh as well. The fries were so good, too! They were crispy, seasoned well and tasted amazing with the ranch. For dessert we had crème brûlée, YUM! The sugar coating was a perfect amount of waxy and sweet, and balanced well with the vanilla custard. The custard was creamy, decadent and super satisfying. The vibe of the restaurant is homey, upscale and warm, great place for a celebration or date night. read more

If you want a memorable dining experience in Lincoln, NE this is your spot. Their beignets are the best I've ever had, the espresso muffin... so moist and flavorful. The soup flight? Each one is so good. We threw down at this restaurant. The drinks and service is just as good. The team here knows what they are doing. They served us up quick and gave me a very memorable birthday brunch. The only downside is parking, especially if it's a busy weekend! Come early, plan ahead. There's limited free street parking. I strongly recommend making a reservation online. We had one, but still had to wait about 15-20 minutes for a table. The food and experience was worth the wait. read more

Wonderful restaurant in downtown Lincoln. We had a party of three and got to taste each entree. Invariably there is a winner... not this time. All were delicious and I would have each based on my mood. My starter drink was a Blueberry Mojito, which hit the spot. Rum, blueberry, lime, mint, and soda. Refreshing, mild, and on ice. My wife had a cucumber gimlet. "It was incredible." Food started with a unique "flight of three" soups. We each got to taste the Lobster Bisque, French Onion, and Roasted Red Pepper Gouda soups. We each picked the French Onion as the clear winner, but the others were expertly made and tasty. My entree was a starter offering, the Tuna Poke Bowl. Scrumptious, light, and filling. Served chilled in a stone bowl with chips. The Atlantic Cod and chips were great, with a couple of dipping sauces. Perfectly fried. The third dish was a lunch special, it was a pasta dish with sun dried tomatoes, roasted baby tomatoes, in a red sauce sprinkled with feta cheese. This was so good. We broke down and ordered desserts. The Green Gateau cake is chocolatey with a hint of pistachios. Also had the Apricot Napoleon Torte which is baked up in Omaha and is renowned. My husband and I have visited for dinner and brunch and the food is always good. For dinner we were sat in the back and while cramped the atmosphere was nice. Brunch we had the opposite experience as we were sat in the front and it was so loud and busy that it was hard to enjoy the experience. All in all, the food is good but I'd never go back for brunch as it was overly cramped and much too loud. read more

Today is game day in nebraska. And it was very crowded. We were really lucky as a table just cleared. We waited for about 5 min for that table to be cleaned up and was ushered to our seat. We lucked out- our table was by the window with a view of the street Our server was very nice. And we got our drinks and food very quickly. I got me the gateau iced tea- that was their special and it tasted wonderful. It was sugar free strawberry and apricot tea. Delicious. And I got me a lobster bisque and crabcake sliders The lobster bisque was delicious. Wonderful and creamy and tastefully seasoned. The crabcake sliders were delicious. Crabcakes were nicely sautéed with crispy edges. The croissants were flakey. Combined- heaven on earth. For desserts, our server actually presented all available desserts on a tray and introduced them all to us. Spoilt for choice I finally picked the green gateau their specialty choc cake with pistachio cream - it was delicious and rich. I loved it - though we just couldn't finish it. We will be back. Ummm....wouldn't recommend brunch here, at least not take out. We had seven meals for takeout. The portion size seemed more suitable for kids meals than adult dishes. For example, I got the French Slam, which was French toast, eggs, and bacon. It included French toast from ONE slice of bread, ONE piece of bacon, and one egg. Not only was this a ridiculous portion, but it didn't include anything to put on top...butter, syrup, jam...anything?? Additionally, several members of our party had missing or incorrect sides. Came here on a Monday afternoon for lunch and it wasn't too busy. Got seated right away and given menus. I ordered the French Connection Sandwich with a cup of Lobster Bisque. The bisque was okay, thick soup with a hint of seafood flavor. The sandwich was great! The bread was toasted on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside and handled the pot roast and mushroom gravy really well. I think the bacon and lettuce were unnecessary, but still ate it all. Fed me for two full meals. Would come back just for the sandwich alone. The desserts also looked really good, but that will have to wait for another time. read more

First reaction, totally overrated. We went tonight. Had a resv and only waited about 10 min. Good start. Service was slow and inattentive. Food - extremely marginal. Soups were pretty tasteless. It was recommended that the 28oz Delmonico steak was the absolute top ! Was undercooked and underseasoned. Both inexcusable for a $72 steak! My favorite brunch in Lincoln when I visit. My favorites are the bloody Mary, the croque monsieur, rueben sandwich, and their lobster bisque with a salad. It is always hard to choose. I have never had anything I didn't like. On this occasion I had the monsieur and my husband had a rueben. The rueben is definitely one of the top 10 I have ever had. Normally I love this restaurant. And I will keep coming back, but... my family took me for brunch on Mother's Day, I ordered Eggs Oscar and the English muffin was so over cooked I needed to use a steak knife to cut it. I'm surprised the waiter didn't flinch when I asked for it. The eggs were not soft poached, so no runny yolks. There was cartilage/shell in my crab cakes, but that can happen sometimes. I didn't want to complain, because I was worried it would hurt my family's feelings since they made the reservation. I've had great food from here and I will go again, but they absolutely did not live up to their excellent reputation; a reputation they usually deserve, but unfortunately not this time around. Last week I had lunch at the Green Gateau and loved it! I went with a college friend, from several decades ago. The parking was difficult at the lunch hour and we parked on the street, over a block away. I was shocked to see the parking meter wanted a quarter for 10 minutes!!! Of course we didn't have that many quarters and the pay- by -phone business would've taken us all afternoon to figure out. We went to the restaurant and asked the hostess if we could get some quarters for the meter. I gave her $2.00 and she asked what our vehicle looked like and which direction was it. She walked over a block to feed the meter for us, while we perused the menu! And the food was awesome, so delicious and fresh and beautiful to look at as well. Love the food at Green Gateau! We've been for dinner, lunch, and brunch and never had a bad bite. The only down side to our most recent visit is that we were there for brunch and never once did they offer a coffee refill. I give a lot of grace for slow service in these times but at our most recent visit it was both slow and then when our waiter was at the table he was borderline rude, seemed annoyed to be answering our questions. The crepes and lemon cake more than made up for it, but it definitely was unusual for this top notch restaurant. read more

Another Husker mom told me it was her favorite place in Lincoln so I decided to give it a try!! Service was excellent start to finish! I'm very happy that we got placed in one of the back rooms because the front of the restaurant seem very very loud, though there were way more people in the front of the restaurant. I got the chicken wrap special of the day with blue cheese potato salad and my daughter got salmon and Caesar salad. Daughter enjoyed her salad and I thought my wrap was really just OK. Nothing special. The French onion soup too, just ok. We will go back here sometime for brunch ...I'm sure the next time I will order something off of the menu instead of a special. We ate at the Green Gateau on the same night as a husker football game. We were greeted warmly immediately upon entering the restaurant. We had no wait to get a table. The service was excellent from the host to the server to the support staff. Our server Jade was attentive, personable, and knowledgeable. My family often orders less than servers expect which sometimes leads to looks of frustration or attitude. Not this time. She didn't seem bothered by the fact we only ordered drinks an appetizer and 1 entree to split. The food was good and reasonably priced. Service was great and should be commended. Back to a summer conference travel trail and found myself enroute to the middle of Nebraska, but decided to do a stop along the way in Lincoln. Lovely small town America, with lots of red stuff (Go Big Red?) decorating the community. Several folks said you have to try the Green Gateau, and I am glad that I did. Situated on a main thoroughfare, this one time bakery and bar was a total surprise upon entering (if outside looks were predictor of either an interior or the food, I probably would not visit half of the wonderful establishments that I do)! A series of interconnecting modest sized rooms with a few tables in each, was adorned with beautiful wood walls (not paneling), a lovely old and large bar and pleasant memorabilia gave the place both an upscale feel while still being unpretentious. White table cloth service made the environment both comfortable and classy. I could go on about the environment, but hey, its the food, right? Well there is an ample choice of starters, salads, entrees and specials. In fact their specials menu had options for those as well as drinks. In the mood for a Martini, I was impressed with the delivery; a large glass shaker with my glass gave me almost 2 drinks, but allowed me to keep the reserve on ice and chilled for my backup. I had already experienced an overloaded lunch, so I thought I should be modest on my dinner from Gateau. There were (are) so many interesting choices on the menu, i regretted only being able to be limited in my selection. The Seafood Lavosh sounded so interesting, I had to begin there and decided to also dive into the Rainbow Trout. The Lavosh (or in my case, the Cauliflower pie) was a thin crust, cracker style bread laden with small bits of seafood in a seafood sauce adorned with vegetables. It was served hot and was absolutely delicious. The Rainbow Trout (while they did have a Trout special, it unfortunately for me was stuffed and wrapped in a pork/Pancetta (a no-no for me) was absolutely delish. Served on a slate tray, an abundance of grilled Idaho Trout (2 fillets) were sitting on top of a medley of roasted vegetables, including brussel sprouts, spring squash, sweet potatoes and zucchini spears and sweet potatoes, served along side a line of sun-dried tomato pesto, and lightly covered with a lemon white wine sauce. The lovely fresh croissant that accompanied the Trout, while it looked so lovely it was not to be with the appetizer. OH MY GOODNESS; I would drive from DC for this again! To say the portions of hearty is almost an understatement. Of course a word about our server. A wonderfully attentive and very friendly Asa, an graphic design student (rising senior) at the aforementioned Big Red institution was equally part of the great experience we had. To the management if you're reading this; hang on to him as long as you can. He represents you extremely well. The only nit pick I have is that the Trout arrived on the table less than 3 minutes after the appetizer, so I had barely had the first bite/piece before my entree arrived. Partly my fault for ordering both at the same time, but the kitchen should be alert enough as they weren't that busy to space things out a bit. While visiting with Asa he shared a bit of the history of the place, how it earned its name, his respect for the owner-chef and of course, many insights into his faves on the menu. PLEASE if you find yourself in Lincoln and you're looking for something special, and while I"m sure the Haymarket establishments are nice, you would be doing yourself a favor to skip those and head to the Green Gateau. read more

Ginormous potion sizes and amazing food! Came here for an impromptu dinner with my boyfriend and was really impressed with everything. We got the Mango Mint Mojito to start off and it was really good. Just the perfect balance of the mango and mint taste. I couldn't even get the alcohol through and could have just had that entire thing in one sip! They brought us fresh croissants before the meal and oh my gosh! They were so so soft and warm, I just cannot! Definitely recommend having them immediately. For the main course I ordered the rainbow trout. It was a ginormous fillet of grilled Trout with roasted zucchini and a bacon sweet potato hash. And then topped with sundried tomato pesto, asparagus and a lemon burre blanc. The fish was perfectly cooked and went so so well with the pesto and lemon sauce. What an unexpectedly good combination! Also that serving size was actually huge. I was shocked! I had actually requested for only the Brussels Sprouts and no sweet potatoes but it turned out they came together. The server was really nice and got me a side salad because she made a mistake when telling me what was possible. Really appreciate that. The side salad was also really good. It came with a giant parmesan chip kind of a thing and some candied walnuts and cheese and dried cranberries. I had that walnut plain and just the greens and cheese with some of the fish. That parmesan chip thing was really surprisingly good as well! So crispy? My boyfriend ordered the special for the night which was the walnut crusted salmon. It came with a vegetable risotto, grilled asparagus and citrus burre blanc sauce. His salmon was cooked really well and that walnut grass went perfectly with it as well. The risotto was super creamy and just a such dish overall. That food was over really quick! For dessert we ordered the Beignets! It came with a strawberry jam and a lemon curd. The Beignets were just beautiful! So huge and so warm and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect amount of powdered sugar and they tasted so so good even without any of the extras. I would really recommend the lemon curd! Just a really good dinner place overall. 10/10 recommend! read more

Really enjoyed dining here for the first time, though it's been around a while. We enjoyed our lobster bisque, rainbow trout and croque monsieur. Staff was not very attentive, tables were shoved in really close and it was hard for them to get around. It's clearly a staple for older people, we were one of the youngest in there as Millennials, but it was good food so no complaints! Small parking lot to the side otherwise street parking. We walked here one evening from a nearby hotel and were seated immediately as we had a reservation. It was early so we were the only patrons, but the place seemed to fill up quickly. Service was friendly and the food came out quickly. I ordered lobster tail with risotto and my husband had a steak. Both were good and were served with warm croissants with whipped butter. This was the highlight of the meal for me. The restaurant is cozy. There are a lot of tables so you are pretty close to your dining neighbors. The decor is a little dated (think early 90's steakhouse) but overall a nice experience and good food. read more
