Unacceptable Experience - Both Food and the Treatment I had a deeply upsetting experience at Green Garden Asian Restaurant in Houston. I went in on a Saturday afternoon around 3 PM. The restaurant was mostly empty -- just me and a table of four other customers who appeared to be East Asian. The owner was extremely friendly and chatting with them, meanwhile, I was entirely ignored. First, the food was terrible -- the chicken was overly breaded and dry, the rice was overcooked and flavorless. When I went to pay, the woman at the counter scolded me for not tipping. I explained there wasn't any service to tip -- I ordered, got my food, and ate in silence without so much as a check-in. Not even a basic "how's everything?" She then muttered something under her breath in Mandarin -- "hei gui." I know exactly what that means, and it's a deeply racist slur against Black people - the N-word. That was the breaking point. Let me be clear: No immigrant, no matter their background, should feel entitled to bring prejudice with them and project it on others -- especially in a multicultural city like Houston. Racism in any form is unacceptable, and I will not stay silent about it. This place does not deserve the support of the Black community -- or anyone who values basic decency. Poor food. No service. We moved in the area little less than a year ago and tried this place. At first the food was great! I still remember having good food in February 2025 here but last time I ordered in May 2025 the food took a turn for worst. It's like they changed cooks or something because the quality of everything was awful compared to months prior. This was my first visit and we decided to dine in. My daughter ordered the corn and chicken soup, but didn't like it. The waiter was very understanding. And I ended up taking home half of my Shrimp Egg Fu Young. I didn't eat breakfast, I guess I was craving Chinese brunch. I've never had egg foo young prepared this way. Basically, the approach was plain egg patties, with a vegetable and shrimp gravy poured on top. As opposed to having the vegetables and meat in the patties. The cup of hot and sour soup was actually a fairly sizable bowl. This is basic Chinese restaurant fare. If there is a Sysco-style Asian restaurant food distributor, then this food tasted like it came off their inventory. Not bad just nothing special or interesting. 2.5 stars for the food, 1 additional for the clean environment. My hubs and I moved from West Chase to Jersey Village last month. Believe me when I say the dearth of good food breaks my heart. This place was almost empty at 6pm on Saturday - but we gave it a try anyway due to the orange chicken craving that rears its stubborn head every few months. There's only one place we've found so far that satisfies it, and we were hoping this place would be a second. We sat and noticed the clean interior and tables. The menu looked new, too. The reviews said to get General Tso/Zuo's Chicken over the orange chicken so we did, and also got the Hot and Sour Soup and the Beef Lo Mein. I think the owner is either Cantonese or Hokkienese so my expectations weren't high. But the soup came out burned - I don't know how; maybe the egg or cornstarch burned - so I sent it back, and would have liked to cancel but the owner said she'll make a new one. The second lacked flavor and she took it back and added some hot sauce to it - Sriracha - and I ended up adding soy sauce myself to improve it. It had a lot of egg, tree ear mushroom, and bamboo in it and eventually tasted ok. 3/5. General Tso's Chicken was bready. The sauce was decent but it's not the traditional Chinese version. The Lo Mein had been forgotten or unheard and was added later, and the noodles didn't have any chewiness. 2.5/5 for the chicken, 2/5 for the lo mein. Given I shouldn't expect traditional Chinese food in Houston, let alone in this part of town, this place offers ok Chinese American fare. The owner really wanted us to be happy with the meal and kept our water glasses full so I'd give an additional star for that. We specifically chose this restaurant because of all the good reviews, so I'm sad to say it was only OK. Maybe it was the menu items we chose, but my sesame beef was a little sweet for my tastes and heavy on the sauce. The egg drop soup was good, but the fried rice was missing flavor and was only OK. Our server was very nice and came by frequently to refill my water, which I always appreciate. The booths, tables, and floors were very clean, but the wallpaper behind us looked like it could use a light wipe down as it appeared dusty. Wow....so this place is quite the anomaly. What a pleasant surprise last night, discovering this place...and thanks to the great reviews on here, especially from "Gammie" and "Kevin C" - thank you for taking the time to actually post what you were eating under the pic!! :). So many yelpers forget this...lol. That said, the Dragon/Phoenix and Mongo-Combo (I'm renaming it) were just stupid delicious. Everything was good...the wonton soup, the little egg roll...all delicious. I'm with Kevin C, I could easily go back here two nights in a row. You just don't find Chinese joints like this very often. At some Chinese restaurants all their food tastes the same, but here everything is fresh and different. Yup it's one of those days. Stop by for a late dinner with a co worker and it surely didn't disappoint. This place is huge inside! Very spacious and tables aren't cramped next to each other like most Chinese American restaurants. It was rather dim inside. We might of over ordered that's why it took awhile. Haha like the whole menu! And oh man the portion sizes were huge, surely can feed me for days! Literally! {Egg drop / hot & soup soup} these were tasty but nothing out of the ordinary. I liked that the soup wasn't thick bc most places use a heavy corn syrup slurry. preferred the egg drop over the hot & sour. It was both very hearty but the hot & sour was a bit more tart than I would like it to be but overall not bad! {vegetable eggrolls} I love eggrolls and these were really yummy! I was literally picking at all the snow peas! It was nice and crunchy! {crispy shrimp} can't go wrong with anything deep fried! haha and these shrimp were just that, DELISH! Crispy, crunchy and oh so tasty! It comes with a brown sauce that adds just a hint of savoriness to it. I can just eat it plain! The broccoli was a nice touch to balance out all the fried stuff! haha {orange chicken} these were my fave! It's actually real chicken! Most places are so heavily battered that you can't even tell if it's chicken but these were so meaty and tender! What made it so good was that they actually use orange rinds! It was really aromatic. The sauce was just the right amount of spiciness and sweetness. Can easily devour this but I was so stuffed with everything else, had to take it home. Great for a midnight snack! And for sure I did just that! haha By the end of the meal, I was literally wobbling! It was just too much food for 2 people! Loves it because I like a variety! Easy 2 chicken and green beans and one beef and broccoli and one order egg rolls. I asked for extra soy sauce, that took 5 minutes to get them to understand, and then they shorted me egg rolls and gave me 8 soy sauce for 3 lunch specials and charged me for the soy sauce??!! So I call, and the manager calls me back and says owner put them in the bag, and she remembered so she told me to check my bag again. I said it's not there!!! She continued to argue, and basically call me a liar. I just wanted them to understand that I did not receive what I was charged for. Completely ridiculous!!! We will never come back to this place.
