Really it deserves only one star, but the local legend status of Green Gables makes me hesitant to do that. I have been going here for over 20 years, and never, not once, was the service anything other than terrible. They really never have cared, in either the grocery or the bar side.
The grocery side has an extremely limited selection, and I highly encourage you to check expiration dates as I regularly come across expired items (often by many months) on the shelves. A 5 minute wait standing by the register is about the average before you are deemed important enough to be checked out.
The bar side is again, nothing to write home about. Many yelpers have made the mistake here of confusing the quality of their food with the fact that this place is a local mecca, or that they had a fun time at the lake that day and this was part of the experience. There is nothing special about the food here. The burgers seem to be the staple for most, I would challenge you to describe the burgers with any word other than "greasy". Nothing special here, I would say they are VERY similar to a Steak n' Shake burger. Service, again, is terrible. Every time and without fail. Ambiance isn't worth mentioning other than that it is dirty.
Gables has existed for this long purely because it is one of two options you have when staying at the lake. I am interested to see what happens to Green Gables as Lake Road Inn (right next door) goes through some changes under new ownership. I know they have added new menu options, TV's etc. but I have not been to the new operation so I couldn't say how it stacks up. Lake Road Inn traditionally has a biker bar label, as there are sometimes 40 Harley's in the parking lot. This keeps a lot of people away, and keeps Green Gables in business. If you must come to Green Gables, I would recommend keeping it to a burger and fries, maybe curds. Bring cash as that is all they accept, and ask for your check early in the meal, you won't be getting it for a while. read more
