This is a review for the Ocean Beach location…read more Let's start with the positives first : the salad was pretty good. Now - let's get to the negatives - of which there are many. You would think one could get the salad served in a regular bowl if eating there - nope, they only have the "to go" plastic containers, even though their website shows salads served in an ACTUAL BOWL. So, great, I get to waste plastic, between the "to go" bowl, plastic fork, plastic cup for water, and plastic small cup for dressing. Second, they don't have ice?! WTF? We would like to have our Diet Coke with a cup of ice but they just....don't have any ice. Ok..... Next, let's talk about price. $16 for a salad isn't cheap, but then another $6 just to add some cubes of chicken? Really? For $22 I could go to an actual restaurant and not eat at one of these "fast casual" places. Over and over again we the public are told to "eat and spend local", but this is exactly why these places are going under. For $22 I get attitude from the 19 year old working the register, get to drink out of a can, get tons of plastic to dispose of, and get to sit in a bland, white cinder block eating area which has a beautiful view of the CVS parking lot. Learned my lesson - next time I'll go to an actual sit-down restaurant that charges the same price and is a much better experience.

But, I'd started to hear about it and didn't realize this storefront was once a OB Farmers Market staple! They've got one thing on the menu. You guessed it, Chicken Over Rice. You choose your base of rice, greens or pita. They have spicy or regular chickpeas and chicken. Then, you pick your toppings like pickled onions, pepperoncinis, lettuce and sauces. Simple but super flavorful! Everything is well seasoned and it's got that nice dankness to the bowl, while still remaining refreshing. The bowl runs around $17 so not cheap, but given how large the portion is, it's a good deal. Can easily make for about 1.5 meals!

The overall cuisine is closer to Mediterranean not so much Mexican flavors. They are a no frills shop as they only offer chicken in 3 different flavors. The food itself tastes great, very fresh and clean ingredients. Overall, a satisfying and healthy meal for me. Street parking is abundant and they have seating inside. I'll have to knock down the rating 1 star just because compared to CAVA and chipotle the options here are quite limited (chicken being the only protein) which is completely fine if you just want chicken. Also I think $17 is quite the hefty price for one bowl HOWEVER, they do really give bigger portions here so at least that makes me feel better about spending almost $20 on a bowl. This is located in Ocean beach, a neighborhood in San Diego that doesn't have too many options so this will be the best next thing to getting chipotle and cava. I think if I lived here I would come quite often but not worth it in my opinion to drive all the way here.

It had turf underneath all tables along the street side and was shaded well for both hoomans and dog! The server quickly wiped the table and was friendly in asking about drinks , while we immersed in the menu - much inspired by New Zealand. She was great the entire time we were there. She came by just enough to check in to get the "nodding yes with our our heads as mouths full " affirmation she needed that all was well. So- I had the Blazin' Ahi and it was absolutely delicious! The ahi , a fave of mine anyway but with the seared with panko covering it and the wasabi mayo and peas and cucumbers? Chef's kiss! Will go next time we are there in late summer and highly recommend!

I later ordered a mimosa & it came out quickly as well. There's a special on mimosas on Saturday & Sunday from 10-2. They start at $1 at 10am and the price goes up incrementally until 2pm when they're $9. (My mimosa was $6.) The food took a bit longer, about twenty minutes, to be delivered. I liked my breakfast very much. Everything was tasty & I enjoyed having little bits of different things to nosh on. M. said his burger was very good, he only wished that it was a bit bigger for the price. Service was fine & friendly. Overall, this was a pleasant experience. Great people watching and great weather helped to enhance this brunch even more. Peace.

I will say it's good for the mainland, but definitely not like the island. This is a well-known spot among locals. A great introduction to mainland folks on what poke actually is. The shop's interior is small. All of the poke is on display, so ordering goes fast. You state what you want, pay, and receive your order, making a quick turnaround. The staff were all patient and kind. But I will say we waited an hour on a Sunday. There are long lines, so come early, on off days, and be patient. Also, they're a takeout spot, so we chose to eat at the beach. Okay, so the food breakdown. I had the Poke Plate, and my companion got the Kalua Pig Plate Lunch. For my poke, I chose Shoyu Ahi and Spicy Salmon. Anytime I get poke, I feel like you gotta have a baseline--shoyu ahi being mine. It was good, but the cuts and texture of the ahi weren't consistent. It was still tasty, and I appreciate how you could add as much or as little shoyu as you want, but I wish there were a bit more flavor. The spicy salmon was good! Creamy, spicy, and tasty. The fish was fresh, but I do feel like they could've given a bit more. I had a bite of my companion's plate, and the Kalua Pig was so salty that it was a bit overpowering. The portion was very generous, but some pieces were dry. The mac salad was good, a different pasta shape I'm used to, and the rice was hard. So overall, it was good but not worth the wait. If you are a poke lover, either visiting or living in San Diego, It's Raw Poke Shop is good mainland poke! Although the map says Newport Ave., their location is off Bacon Street. Parking is limited and hard to find in Ocean Beach, so plan accordingly.
