Yes! We saw SO MANY donut places while driving around Milwaukee, that we didn't really know where to go. We tried this place because the history of it was so sweet (pun intended!) This places has some of the best donuts I've tasted so far!! Try the crullers! The cookies are also amazing!! We bought a variety of items, crullers, raised glazed donuts, cookies, a coffee cake, and a "frosting" filled cookie sandwich. The donuts, crullers and cookies get 10/5 stars! the frosting inside the cookie gets a 3.5/5, and the coffee cake was just ok. We'll def be back next time we visit Milwaukee!! read more

My son tells me that he drove past a bakery that looks all vintage and charming. He's sure I'll love it. Then he gets up an hour early on a work day to bring me there. How could I say no? Somehow this place was completely off my radar. I had never heard of it (I mean, I'm not native to Milwaukee but I have lived here a year at this point). So, of course, I was surprised when the kiddo had heard of a place I hadn't. Sometimes the student becomes the teacher. Grebe's is an old school bakery in every sense of the phrase. Their space is well worn from what I can only assume has been years of Milwaukee love. When I was in, they had a nice variety of breads (I grabbed a loaf of brioche). They also have donuts, cookies, and cakes. I opted for a chocolate dipped cruller and my son opted for their cinnamon roll. He also snagged a bottle of lemonade. Lemonade, cinnamon roll, chocolate dipped cruller, and a loaf of bread ran me $5. So, yeah. Their prices are pretty phenomenal, given many bakeries (including ho-hum bakeries inside grocery stores) charge 5 bucks for a loaf of bakery bread alone. The cruller was out-of-this world. The bread was solid, but nothing spectacular. They also have a little deli counter where they serve sandwiches made with Usinger's meats or Boar's Head meats and cheeses (the best!). I can make a lot of things at home. But for some reason, social distancing has me craving only things that I can't make at home or have never tried to tackle. For example, today's obsession was donuts. I just couldn't get donuts out of my mind. The craving was real, and it was serious. I talked about it for hours with my husband, who eventually caved in and ordered me a surprise dozen from this local bakery, which UberEats was offering a $0 delivery fee! I was extremely excited. A lifelong Milwaukeean, I've heard of Grebe's bakery over and over again throughout the years and even had a donut connoisseur friend recommend their donuts to me. Needless to say, I was excited to try. Both my ubereats driver and Grebe's must have been on top of things, because it was delivered to my doorstep in 14 minutes, probably at great relief to my husband who will finally not have to hear me talk about donuts incessantly. He ordered a dozen donuts comprised of a variety of what they had to offer. Apparently a couple were sold out by the time the order was placed at 11 a.m., so I recommend ordering early if there's a specific type you must have. So far, we've tried the cheese danish, the cinnamon sugar coated cream cheese filled, the maple long john, and a classic chocolate iced with sprinkles. All were delicious, light and airy and fresh, but the cinnamon sugar coated cream cheese filled was really something special. Took me almost 8 years of living in Milwaukee to finally go into Grebe's to see what all the fuss was about. I'll tell you what, it's the thin sliced ham, soft rolls, sweet donuts, and the timely, nostalgic feeling of going into this ma and pa bakery. Just ok, TBH. Now I know a lot of you love Grebe's - and I'm happy for you because the love between a person and their baked goods is sacred. I stopped in to their old-school-in-a-good-way Lincoln Ave location because I was assigned "dessert" for Easter Saturday with the fam. I thought if anyone would have a traditional lamb cake it would be them (you know - the kind with jellybean eyes and green dyed coconut grass). They didn't but I was very happy to find a nicely decorated Easter egg cake. For science, I also grabbed a sprinkles donut because everyone seems to rave about them. Oh dear Lord, this was one of the worst donuts I've ever tasted! I mean, I love donuts and didn't think there was such a thing as a bad donut but now I know better. It was stale, oily and the icing was so dried up that it fell off in big chunks when I took a bite. This might be the first time a chubby girl threw away a donut after one bite! Anyway, the lady helping me with my order was super nice - no complaints at all about service. It looks like in addition to Easter cakes and horrific donuts, they also do a hot lunch of the day and custom sandwiches too. Today being Good Friday, it was fish fry of course. Prices on everything are very reasonable as well. I might be back to try lunch someday but if I want a stale poor quality donut, I'll get one at the gas stations they supply (not being snarky, they do) and not make a trip to the store. read more

This is a place that had plenty of people going to it. When we arrived, we took a number and checked to see what type of donuts we would get. We ended up getting a cherry cake, blueberry cake, & a chocolate iced buttercream donut. The thing about the cake donuts were that they seemed to be lacking in a strong flavor, as they were subtle, but nothing that made me want to keep eating them. I didn't bother to finish them off. The buttercream donut, on the other hand, was great though! It was nice and soft and had a good amount of buttercream inside. They had a good variety of donuts there and would have liked to try more, but I will suggest to people to go for the yeast donuts and avoid the cake donuts. read more

The nurses at a local hospital love Grebe's food so I have tried to order it several times. The website and phone service deserve a negative 10! The website says they offer delivery, but they do not. Yet the website still sends me to a company that the bakery no longer works with. When I try to order the "pickup" option, the web site keeps switching it to the non-existent "delivery." The phone is never answered by a human being, but rather there are 8 options, yet some of them do not even have voice email set up. The retail option is never picked up by a person. The management needs a new website designer and better phone service and, dare I ask for it, more employees so someone picks up the phone. read more

It was one of the first bakery I tried in Milwaukee since I'm a love donuts and have never met a cruller I didn't like! I ate the whole bag of cruller bites for breakfast, they were that delicious. I've long been a fan of Grebe's, since the days I was a Marquette student and they had a counter on Wisconsin Avenue on campus. When I wasn't eating ramen noodles cooked in a hot pot or scrimping on doing laundry so I could buy a beer for 50 cents at the Avalanche, I was splurging on the crispy, dense yet fluffy glazed sticks that are Grebe's cruller doughnuts. They still make them and other classics today, distributing to grocery stores everywhere. But the difference in fresh-baked deliciousness is worth the trip to 50th and Lincoln Ave. One new item on sale were cruller bites. Everything I like about crullers in bite-sized form? I bought some and can't wait to try. I'd forgotten from the days of my wayward youth that Grebe's also had a deli counter. There was potato salad and other fixings that is worth a return visit. I saw hot ham and rolls advertised and am betting its good here. In 2005 Grebes bought the license to Crestwood Bakery, so the cutout cookies and other baked goods widely distributed through the Sentry chain of my childhood continue on. I can still get those cutout cookies at Sendiks and I was happy to see them on sale. The difference in quality of fresh baked absolutely can't be beat. I saw a couple of other baked goods I'm going to have to return to try, at the top of my list are the white chocolate-dipped sugar cookies I saw. Those are for another day. Hey! A couple years ago I stopped at a gas station in Madison, Wi and noticed these adorably decorated sugar cookies. I bought just one and ended up taking a bite as I was pumping gas- it was the best cookie I ever had. I ended up going back inside and buying the rest of the cookies to bring home for my family. I live in a Chicago suburb and have driven all the way to Grebe's bakery on several different occasions to surprise my family with these cookies. I ordered cookies for my niece's Troll-themed birthday and they exceeded my expectations with their decorating. I plan on stopping at this bakery on my way up to Waupaca, Wisconsin in just a couple of weeks. Every Friday someone brings in donuts for the group and when it rolled around for my turn (my Donut Debut, if you will) I decided to follow friends' and family's advice and bring in Grebe's. The most important thing to know is that they carry my precious Boston Creme which has delicious custard filling (not cream, despite the name). Not every place has these, but Grebe's were really good. I recommend calling ahead for your order. I waited a few minutes in line but my box was all ready to go and there were no worries about anything running out. I love Grebe's! I first found out about it when we were looking into different bakeries to get cakes for our wedding. We got our catering from All Occasions Catering (highly recommend!) and they told us that they work with Grebe's and that donuts could be a great alternative to cake. We decided to go with it. The price was great and our guests loved it! There was something for everybody. Since then, I have gone into the store a few times when driving past and there is always a good selection. I actually really like the plain cake donuts (who knew?) and my husband likes basically everything else. They have bread, milk, sodas, sandwiches, soups, and other things too. I haven't tried everything but the sandwiches are good and worth the price. Also, I had a cake pop from there recently and it was one of the most delicious things I've eaten in a while. I stopped in to pick up a half dozen donuts and a sandwich for work. I waited in line just a short time and she took my donut order and was ready to check me out. I said I wanted a sandwich and she said they were not doing sandwiches because of the line of customers. That is declining a sale to me which is very poor business practice because if I would've gotten another half dozen donuts, it would've been the same price as the sandwich. Nestled in a near south side Milwaukee neighborhood. The sign, the storefront, the interior all hearken back to a time when bakeries were still family owned enterprises and the offerings while not as varied as a large commercial venue, made up for it with quality and taste. I stopped in yesterday after work to pick up some Paczki's. The sweet odor wafting over the parking lot drew me into its arms and I swooned. The bakery counter was staffed by three people, two women and a younger man. Because it was Paczki Day efficiency was the name of the game. Between them they kept the line moving at an astonishing pace and never skipped a beat. I ordered four Paczki's and they were quickly bagged and tagged so I could be on my way. Confession Time: I had barely pulled out of the parking lot before ripping into the bag and biting into the soft fruit filled Paczki. They were, in a word, sublime. I now return you to my regularly scheduled review: Grebe's does doughnuts the way they are suppose been done. When you bite into them, they taste of real ingredients and don't smack of commercialized doughnuts. The cookies are awesome, sugary, sweet everything you want in a cookie. And their Hot Cross Buns? Fogeddaboutit, just give in to temptation. In addition to an array of delicious bakery items, Grebe's also has a small deli that carries Boar's Head meats. In a utopian world, Grebe's would be the only bakery allowed to serve their sweet treats. I grew up in a small town with a small town bakery in it. They had great doughnuts there, but these - these blow the home down place out of the water! You don't often find a place like this anymore, especially with all the chains now. What you will find here are some of the most filling and tasty doughnuts around. And when it comes to substance, these are what you want. For the same price as the skimpy air filled doughnuts of some other places, you get some great, dense, filling doughnuts. Plus, order 12 and get a baker's dozen! Oh, and when it comes to getting all the doughnuts - the staff here are real pros at keeping track of how many doughnuts are in your order already! They are very patient when you work through your selection... if you are anything like me - it can be a little stressful making the right selections! My one star is for the lack of follow up and customer service. I requested a donation for a school event. Was told that she would call me back with more information. Failed to call me back, I called back and even the after our second conversation (which came with no information), I was told she would call me back within an hour still no call back as promised. I'm a HUGE donut person and Grebe's is always a great choice. You go here for more of a classic donut in contrast to the specialty-types more common downtown or in cities. Every time I've been here there's a line to the door of customers looking to get donuts food, and other pastries they sell. I don't even live near here, but am willing to drive across town for a good donut! I especially love going here when I'm buying for large groups since they have a huge variety and always a ton of donuts in stock. Also love their cookies and they are also great for large groups. I love this little place. I have only bought bakery here so I can't comment on the rest. I recently started a job on the south side of Milwaukee and needed to get donuts for the staff. I figured there couldn't be a better place on the south side than the Grebe's bakery. It's so typical south side (in all charming and positive ways) that I keep coming back. I love to people watch while I'm waiting for my bakery too. It's this tiny little bakery that clearly has a steady stream of consistent customers that come in often. If you can sit back and enjoy all of the nuances that the south side has to offer, you'll enjoy it! The donuts are great, prices are right, and they have a wide selection of bakery. While I was only there for donuts, they have the old fashion Yellow Smiley Face cookies that all kids love. I had to pick some up for my kids b/c it's so old school great. One of my favorite things about them is that when I call for about 100 donuts, I am usually doing this about an hour or so before I come in. I don't mean to be that rude and call so last minute, but I tend to forget until the morning of. They pull together an order so fast and don't pause at my tardiness in requesting such a big order.
