Came here to pick up a few dessert items for a party that we were having. The place has a good selection of deli meats, but I was here for bakery. Got waited on by a super nice woman. Decided a several small pieces of frosted cake. They had cupcakes, but they were small and not very exciting. Plenty of other options including cookies, donuts, and turnovers. Went in to buy some bakery . There were not many rolls in the rack, couple of trays got put out. I said ill take a couple of the rolls from the new trays, just came in on a truck . Was told, they are going to be cold. Warm day, cold rolls, they told me they were FROZEN. Back up bakery. When i go into a bakery, i think fresh bakery, guess ill go to aldi's and buy frozen rolls 50 per cent cheaper. Have always wondered if it was FRESH bakery, now i know. Slowest sandwiches ever made and tasted terrible. 20 minutes to have a sandwich made one lettuce leaf at a time and they were entirely not edible. Bread immediately fell apart while trying to eat it and it tasted bad. Bakery may be good but do not get a sandwich here. read more

Rainbow Jimmy Persian: Although I know I've had National Bakery in the past, I'm almost positive it's been over a decade since my last tasting. National Bakery was founded in MKE back in 1925 in the center of an old Polish neighborhood. Supposedly, its owner Louis Wisniewski named it National Bakery & Deli because he interpreted National in his native Polish language to signify for the people. Today I have a Pershing, which is a doughnut that is similar to a cinnamon roll, but is made with doughnut batter. The cinnamon flavor is subtle, but I could see the cinnamon granules in the dough after taking a few bites. I found the dough to have a nice thick and chewy texture, while the rainbow jimmies and vanilla frosting added some sweetness. Due to the thickness of the doughnut the ratio of icing to dough is a little off for my preference. With the pershing being so thick, I think adding a glazing to the dough would have improved it greatly. To be clear, this is much better than the abominations Dunkin calls doughnuts, but it's not good enough to make me want another either. It falls just shy of my "Doughboy approved" rating and is going to get a "Just Okay" (though I would consider trying some additional items from National Bakery). My top doughnut shops: 1. I am at a loss of words at how beautiful this cake turned out AND how delicious it was!!! We ordered this cake for my daughter's sweet 16 birthday party. It took us a bit to connect with the one employee who does tiered cakes but it was so worth that extra effort, she did a phenomenal job on it. All of the flowers were make out of icing either buttercream or fondant the top tier was a marble cake the bottom chocolate nothing fancy like fillings but honest it didn't need it. It was ready on time and just made the party perfect! I highly recommend you not only stop in for a great donut but order your birthday, wedding, graduation cake from here just go in early because they get busy around this time of the year! read more

We went here to try their ham and rolls and were not disappointed! We were able to choose sliced or shaved ham and also the kind of rolls we wanted. We also bought some of the bakery items, which I'm assuming were good, because they were eaten before I got my hands on any. An excuse to go back! In addition to the fresh bakery items, there is a frozen food case with turnovers and the like to bake at your leisure. The service was friendly and the ladies behind the counter were very patient. We were alerted to all the specials going on, but were not pressured to buy anything. I was the biggest fan of National Bakery and stopped when I wanted to treat myself, but in the last few months I've noticed a change. It has to do with the oil I think. Either they changed the brand or aren't changing the oil often enough. Last week I bought a cherry nest and a French pastry. They tasted pretty much the same which is really strange. A friend and I stopped in this morning and got cherry nests. The bakery tasted of oil again, which covers all but the cherries. I'm disappointed because I so loved them and sent so many people to them. I hope it gets better. read more

I stopped here for the first time to pick up a birthday cake. I have nothing but good things to say about this business. The cake they designed and created was amazing. They were given some design ideas and ran with them. The cake was ready on time, which is always a plus. The staff here was nothing but friendly and kind. This bakery will be on the top of my list the next time I have a need for a cake. Also offered at this location is donuts, pastries and of course hot ham and rolls. If the rating system went to six stars National Bakery would be worthy of that sixth star.The location is in a strip mall in the downtown village area. Staff Went the Extra Mile Recently, my wife and I ordered a couple of very special cakes made by National Bakery, located on Greendale's Broad Street. I can't say enough about how incredibly pleased we were with the results. We worked very closely with a woman named Lucia, who made the entire experience a sheer joy. I would like to have included a picture of both cakes! The wedding cake was to be simple and was executed exactly as we ordered it. The 'Barbie Cake', which incorporated a Scarlet O'Hara doll which we provided, was a very exacting project, however. It was an extremely specific request which was carried out flawlessly by the staff. Lucia saw to each and every one of our needs perfectly. So, both cakes looked amazing and were expertly made. Now for the taste... INCREDIBLE!! Both the cake and the butter cream frosting were out of this world! I've enjoyed plenty of cake in my life; and this was, without exception, possibly the best ever! We recommend this bakery to anyone and everyone in need of a special bakery order or just a little something that's pre made. Kudos to National Bakery. My husband should be writing this review since he is the real customer! A couple weeks ago, my husband went into National Bakery in Greendale with the desire to buy a coffee cake. Imagine his disappointment when he discovered they only take orders and make them fresh! He reluctantly ordered one for the next day and thought, "wow, that was kind of pricey." After bringing the coffee cake home, he cut a piece and savored every bite! He said it was THE BEST coffee cake he's ever had! The buttercream was delicious and just the right amount...spread between two layers of a moist, delicious coffee cake. Two of our 3 college aged sons were home and they totally agreed!!! This has to be the worst bakery in Wisconsin. Tried several things because they looked good. Believe me, looks are deceiving. Bought an elephant ear which had half inch of sweet disgusting frosting on it. Bought a chocolate éclair that had NO filling, the dough had no taste and had half an inch of sweet disgusting chocolate frosting, Isn't there supposed to be custard filling? Bought a crawler that was old and dry and had no flavor. They get their bakery from the main facility on 16th Street in Milwaukee I was told and looked forward to trying it. Problem is, they must get the bakery delivered once a week because every single thing we tried was OLD and dried up. I never had such awful bakery. Totally a waste of money and it's expensive besides. I don't mind paying good money for good bakery but this was awful. read more

horrible for the deli portion! theres better sandwich's given at the county jail i am sure! i had a turkey and provolone sandwich 2 slices of turkey 2 slices of prov which were thicker than the turkey on regular sandwich bread which was all ripped up from them spreading hard butter on it. my husbands italian was on a roll where the bottom half of the roll was 3 sizes smaller than the top portion. i mean maybe their bakery is good, i am not sure i never tried it nor will i. horrible service horrible food. read more

Picked up the usual Boston Cream Pie for a birthday party (in the past were very good, esp. the frosting) and was disappointed to find that the cream filling was not as thick and the frosting barely covered the top which affected the overall taste of this usually scrumptious dessert. Hope for everyone's sake this was a one-time mistake since it's hard to find BCP.
